That said, I hadn't seen anything yet, because if that label applies to anything, it applies to a musical based on the Roman legend of the Rape of the Sabine—Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. We happened to catch a viewing with Russ Tamblyn talking beforehand—the second actor from West Side Story we've seen in person, and with the Flower having the same response of "I wish they would do the Q&A after so I knew if these guys were any good"—and he and the host spoke in cautious, nearly whispered tones about how the movie would not be possible in modern times. Can we stop saying "modern" and start saying "repressive"? Because it feels more repressive than modern to me.When I was a kid, six girls in their skivvies mean there was an axe-murderer nearby. This is the plucky story of a mountain man named Adam who comes into town looking for a wife. He is utterly confident that he will find one—he's willing to trade his mule, after all!—and he stumbles across the small-but-feisty Jane Powell who is adorable and can cook, and seeing a chance to get out from under the grind of serving a bunch of ungrateful, demanding men, agrees to go along with him. When she gets to Adam's cabin, of course, she finds out that Adam has six brothers and they live like animals. But on seeing Jane Powell, they all decide they want wives, too, so she teaches them, Snow White-style, how to behave a little better and not eat like pigs, and about the sorts of things that women like in men. It's the classic dynamic between the sexes, which is borne out by the fact that when the boys go to a barn-raising/dance they easily woo the women of their dreams away from their soft townie rivals. The color coordination, while wholly anachronistic, helps you tell the brothers apart. Winter's gonna be long. And it's gonna be hard. Something about Julie Newmar always stands out. "There she is LeFou! The lucky girl I'm going to marry!" Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Hey everybody. Yay! Finally a new movie thread! Hi again Moviegique!
Movies I have yet to collect, that I've been thinking of getting lately, to fill in yet more of the holes in my collection: - Americathon (John Ritter's R-rated movie) - Hero At Large (John Ritter's family movie which I believe came out at almost the same time) - Nebraska - The Master - Fatso - The Girl Most Likely To... (both this and Fatso are finally coming out on blu-ray just this month) - Memento - Cop Land - Xanadu - What's Up Doc (just found it has the great Kenneth Mars) - The Mule - Darkman - Oleanna - FM (finally coming out on blu-ray soon) - Glory - Deliverance Posted by: qdpsteve at June 08, 2019 07:58 PM (miE9U) Posted by: JT at June 08, 2019 07:58 PM (UW+MI) 32

The Technicolor is awesome in 7B47B, yeah. Hi, QDP! Americathon's okay, I guess...it's kind of a sad movie from a sad time in our history. For all that it's a comedy, the US is bankrupt and John Ritter is the President. Which sounded a lot less awesome 40 years ago. Posted by: moviegique at June 08, 2019 08:01 PM (CcUfv) 39

I like this movie a lot. Big fun and laughs Also like Jane Powell in A Date with Judy. Saw "John Wick: Parabellum" last week.
Just a great action movie. Tremendous fun. The only weaknesses: 1) they start with their best action scene. Nothing following comes close to the knife scene (Choreography by bluebell!) Dog scene is close but nope. 2) The multiple glass case smashings. If you've seen JW: P then you know what I mean. The knife scene is so well choreographed that it strikes me that some inventive director could make a great all-singin' all-dancin' violent action musical, Get on it, Hollywood. Saw "Godzilla: King of Monsters" this week as well.
Great monster fights and effects. That part is lots of fun. Any time the humans show up though....yeesh. They really need better writers and actors. And the "king" part is taken a little too literally at the end. The writers may have written themselves into a bit of a corner. Maybe that's the way they'll set up the next movie "Godzilla VS Kong" - as rivals to the "throne". Anywho, fun movie that should be better than it is. Cuz it wouldn't require much writing skill to make it better. Posted by: naturalfake at June 08, 2019 08:23 PM (J2mEl) Posted by: My life is insanity at June 08, 2019 08:23 PM (Z/jzm) 118
Even when Tears For Fears was advocating suicide in their first album "The Hurting," I'm not sure they showed much emotion.
"The Start Of The Breakdown" had that perfect balance of emotion and control. The only song on that first album to merit a seat on The Big Chair. The rest of the album was by turns robotic ("Change") or unlistenable ("Ideas As Opiates") or full of emo lame ("Watch Me Bleed", where Orzabal and Smith menstruate all over the place). After checking IMDB, the only other two Zwick films I liked were Blood Diamond and Legends of the Fall, the latter film was overwrought for sure but it had enough for me to like. I would put Glory near the top of all Civil War films. There really are not that many films that portrayed the war accurately. Sure there are legions of Gone With the Wind fans among other films. But few of them are really good on the war itself. Glory has its flaws but I consider it to be one of the best. It is not the most common story but it is an important story. And i think it was Denzel Washington's best role. Posted by: Quint at June 08, 2019 08:25 PM (n13/j) 124

The Big Chair was brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.
I remember when "Shout" first came out. In the car to/from some vacation my parents dragged me to. First I thought, huh... interesting direction for Duran Duran. (Nobody was playing any Tears for Fears on the Gulf Coast, except maybe Mad World once or twice.) But... it wasn't Duran Duran. Not at all. "If I could change your mind I'd really love to break your heart". There was NOTHING like this on the radio in 1985ish. They claim it was just a protest song. But it wasn't that either. It was pure primal scream. Posted by: boulder t'hobo at June 08, 2019 08:34 PM (ykYG2) Posted by: Bertram Cabot, Jr. at June 08, 2019 08:34 PM (aKsyK) 143

Quint, I could be wrong but I think Total Eclipse was considered ridonkulous even by the standards of the 1980s.
Needed in 1985 to tear your house down? You could call the wrecking ball people, or just play "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" at full volume once or twice and get the job done. What wasn't destroyed by Bonnie Tyler's earthshaking voice, the neighbors would rip apart for you, just so they could stuff the dust in their ears to block out the song. Had a relation in theater in a really woke college town. PhD program.
I told him he should produce "South Pacific" so we could see what happened when"There is Nothing Like A Dame" came on. He missed the point. Said he didn't think he could assemble the talent. Strange. Our high school did. And perhaps the woke audience wouldn't understand the historical references. Posted by: Richard Aubrey at June 08, 2019 09:17 PM (fikzx) 312

Probably more appropriate for the Book Thread but I've been reading Yahoo's interview with Michael Wolff over his new book and even they call him out on his lies:
"Even if I was wrong, I'm not going to admit it to you," said Wolff in an interview for the Yahoo News podcast "Skullduggery." The exchange over Wolff's multiple mistakes grew testy at times. "You get all these things wrong and then you ask us to trust you," this correspondent said to Wolff. "No, you get these things wrong," Wolff retorted. "This critique is bulls***!" The other was Timelapse which was more low budget but also darker and more interesting.
Posted by: Grump928(C) at June 08, 2019 09:41 PM (lRZdD) I saw "Timelapse" a couple of years ago. It stars the chick from TV's "The Flash" and the movie "Mr Brooks". (sidenote: MB is a great Kevin Costner movie in which he plays a serial killer. should've done better at the box-office.. Shows up often on cable cuz as mentioned...it's great) "Timnelapse" is very low budget but a really well done time travel movie. It edges nicely into thriller territory and has some decent twists.. I believe it streams on amazon. Check it out. Posted by: naturalfake at June 08, 2019 09:53 PM (J2mEl) 405

Loudon Wainwright III...there is no IV. LW3 named his son Rufus to break the curse. DEAD SKUNK is atypical of his work which is.often poignant as wellbas witty. Of course, the skunk comes out from time to time with such songs as I Wish I Was A Lesbian and This Song Don't Have A Video. Posted by: Moviegique at June 08, 2019 09:54 PM (KUptT) 406
I enjoyed a comedy called "Pure Luck" with Martin Short and Danny Glover. It was no Citizen Kane, but I thought it was funny.
Posted by: irright at June 08, 2019 09:44 PM (RVcmP) I loathe Danny Glover, but I really liked Pure Luck. Martin Short is so friggin' funny. Oddly, I also liked Glover in Lonesome Dove, which is IMO the best TV miniseries ever made (I do not include HBO and whatnot in this assessment - this was network TV) Posted by: Pug Mahon, Not a Dullard at June 08, 2019 09:55 PM (SUV+r) 407

It doesn't get as much respect but I think the movie Kiss Me Kate is underated. Great songs and humor, a Bob Fosse young enough to have a full head of hair, songs like 'From This Moment On' and the gangsters duet of 'Brush Up Your Shakespeare', and others.

I watch a ton of smaller films on netflix before I Girlllpower unsubscribed over chickflixgate.
Some time travel movies I recall but can't name. 1. a dinner party takes place where the guests end up travelling between similar, alternate timeline groups of the same dinner party behaving differently. 2. a group of roommates figure out something something with their neighbor's house takes a picture once a day of their house one day in the future. hilarity ensues. 3. a guy wakes up and lives a Live.Die.Repeat scenario against a group of assassins that come into his house to kill him. all recommended. anyone can think of their names? @386 Vaya con Dios, Les and Mary. Well it's no "Good Old Summertime," but they were the rockinest/rollinest sound on the hit parade for a couple of years. For their best IMHO, look up "How High The Moon."
About as trivial as trivia can get, Les Paul was in a car crash and his arm was all messed up. Doctor told him he could look normal, or play the guitar, no middle ground. So Les had his arm set in a certain angle, never to flex again. The arm angle was just right for playing from a seated position. In order to play standing up he had to "lean in" to his playing stance, looking kind of like he was about to take off running. For 70-some years now, every guitar player in the world has copied that stance. Posted by: Stringer Davis at June 08, 2019 09:59 PM (8ZmvG) 413

Trace adkins has a similar story about his broken pinky. It's permanently immobilized, so he had it set to be at a 90 degree bend so he can still play chords on the guitar.

Moviwegique: Now, nobody in 2019 has much to say about 19th century men in the wilds of Oregon, even if they are in a "town", but compared to the Mountain Men, they are sissified.
Standards change. Almost 2,000 years ago Caesar described the peoples of Gaul. Of all these, the Belgae are the bravest, because they are furthest from the civilization and refinement of our Province, and merchants least frequently resort to them, and import those things which tend to effeminate the mind. Effeminate 2,000 years ago would be different from today. Posted by: Delurk Ergo Sum at June 08, 2019 10:33 PM (z2xIo) 429
The choreography was by Michael Kidd, who was heterosexual and liked to design dances that were masculine. He also did the fabulous choreography in Li'l Abner, which also had lyrics by Johnny Mercer.
