Saturday Afternoon Chess Thread 06-08-2019

WIM Maria Florencia Fernandez 01.jpg
WIM Maria Florencia Fernández

As always, the chess/dress pr0n thread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment.

And Moviegique's movie thread will be up later up this evening.

Easier Problem - White To Play (994)

Goal: White can force a mate in 4
Hint: Neither White's first move, nor the second, is a check

20190608 - Problem 1.jpg
1rbk2B1/p2p4/3p1Npp/1p2p3/4P3/3P4/PPn3PP/5R1K w - - 0 1

Naturally, Stuff Like This Never Happens To Me:

(h/t to many morons who brought this to my attention)

More Challenging Problem - White To Play (995)

There are a number of ways for White to win from this position. Which line is the fastest?

Goal: Queen the h pawn, don't trade it for the knight
Hint: Lure the knight away

Solutions Update

20190608 - Problem 1.jpg
1rbk2B1/p2p4/3p1Npp/1p2p3/4P3/3P4/PPn3PP/5R1K w - - 0 1

Pretty straightforward:

1.Nd5 Ke8

White was threatening Rf8#
2.Bh7 Bb7

This is almost a random move. There is no defense for what follows:

3.Bxg6+ Kd8
4.Rf8#

More Challenging Problem - White To Play

20190608 - Problem 2.jpg
5n2/pp3p2/4kN1P/3pP3/7P/1P1K4/P4P2/8 w - - 0 1

1.h5!

Deprives the knight of the g6 square. The immediate 1.h7? results in 1...Ng6 2.h5 Nh8 and it's not clear how White can proceed. Any win he has is a long way off.

1...Kxe5 2.Nd7+!

2.h7 Nxh7 3.Nxh7 also wins, but not as fast.

2...Nxd7
3.h7 Nc5+
4.Ke2 ends Black's counterplay and now White's h-pawn cannot be stopped.

Hope to see you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

10 The chess woman is quite pretty but she looks like she's wearing a ring on the side of her nose. I don't like nose jewelry.

I like the pink dress with the roses, but I think the brown and blue dress looks like something Wednesday Adams would wear to a costume party for the 19th century . Either that or the pie woman in the "Demon Barber of Fleet street" out for a fancy evening.

Inter-dimensional time traveling fetus babies. Nothing about this game seems to make any sense, but it's clearly about death in some sort of broad sense. The scenes from World War 1 seems to be taking place in some kind of purgatory or hell. Much of the game looks to be pathfinding and obstacle puzzle solving.

When you have even Ted Cruz doing the tactically idiotic thing over tariffs [couldn't keep his mouth shut for a week, when he knows it's poker and OUR hand depends on him keeping his boring reservations to himself], even though sectors in his own state are over-run, not much reason for optimism overall.

78 Lovely dress choices! I love Victorian goth so the brown dress is my jam. And I love a good dirndl.

I had so much fun watching all the pretty fashion pics of Melania this week. From the first orange London print silk dress to the end. Melania often goes full vavavoom eleganza on Europe trips to Italy or France, as a former model should. Show macrons wife and the others how to do it properly. But I loved how everything for the British leg of the trip was crisp, elegant, regal, yet a wee bit demure. Except the white dress above, which had a bit more edge. She has looked stunningly chic the whole trip. And the d-day stuff looked beautiful but respectful.

I also enjoyed seeing the clothes of the trump entourage! Some good dresses there. I do miss Hope Hicks, she was a style goddess. I did wonder what she would have worn to the big formal eve with the queen. Left is doing their best right now to get her into prison stripes or orange.

Funny story....

Our daughter is adopted from China. When she was about 4-5yrs old, her favorite color was pink. Everyone called the girl pinky or pink. We were out shopping and i said to her, c'mon. I started to say child at the same time as I said Pink and it got all scrambled up and came out ... "c,Mon chink." The lady standing a few feet away looked over, realized my girl was asian, and glared at me like I was the worst person in the world. I just laughed, pick the child up and said come on pinky!

103 83 So if you're playing Black, is it your intention to keep the knight on f8?

After 1. h5.

1 ... Nd7 2. Nxd7 Kxd7 and pawn on h6 queens.

1. ... Nh7 2. Nxh7 and white N can escape

1. ... Ng6 2. hxg6 and Black can stop h pawn but he's down a N.

Black can only trade N at the expense of the h-pawn queening otherwise he loses the N and White wins easily.

I looked at the goal, which says to Queen the h-pawn but in the case that Black trades Knights, he queens. In the other two cases he is at least up a Knight.

Looking again it appears that the h-pawn cannot be stopped in any of the 3 lines where Black moves the N.

In the US the President is both head of government and head of state. In many countries these roles are divided. Many parliamentary systems have a PM as head of government and a president as head of state.

The Queen is head of state. She represents the UK to the outside world but she does not govern.

264 btw - i think that chess piece coming up at sotheby's on july 2 is over-estimated at 600,000 - 1,000,000 pounds. a far better chess piece, a seated king of the same vintage, sold for 550,000 pounds 3 years ago. it was in near perfect condition and this one is a wreck. even with the putative connection to the lewis pieces i don't see it bringing that kind of price. maybe, you never know, but i doubt it.

My younger brother is an commercial/education industry insurance claims exec. He has been following this case closely (Oberlin is not a client of his.)

His opinion is that Oberlin could not have handled this thing, from start to finish, any more poorly. Again, his opinion, is that they are going to get drilled - deservedly so. Both in the punitive portion of the trial and by their ins carrier (Lexington). He stated Lex will most likely drop them as a client and they will have to seek ins in the (very) high risk carrier market if they can get coverage at all.

It's wrong of me to have a schadenboner this massive.

322 Why did I write Liberty when it is Lexington unless we talking history yeah Liberty for the Colonists started at Lexington.

But yeah Oberlin's insurance carrier is going 'no we won't pay.'

They have like an $880 million endowment. But all Oberlin uses is the income from it which is about $40 million a year.

Now factor in no insurance coverage. And the jury decides to tack on another $22 million. That is suddenly a $33 million hole in the budget. To cover that shortfall Oberlin either raids the endowment, raises tuition. or begs the alumni to step up.

Except an appeal to the alumni to be successful is kinda doubtful after the college sent out that missive on the case saying they did nothing wrong even though the jury just found they did. Raiding the endowment of capital will reduce future income. And raising tuition lowers how many can attend.

So Oberlin is facing a bunch of hard choices because they never entertained the thought they could lose.
