Family Matters [KT]

cowboy3.jpg

Louis (Bud) and Temp Abernathy crossed the U.S. by horseback in 1911, at the ages of 7 and 9. They stopped on their journey to have their horses shod by North Ogden's Shupe Brothers.

Unaccompanied minors. At least most of the way. Of course, that was before helicopters were invented. And of course, drug cartels were not an overwhelming problem.

More recently, lots of minors have been making long journeys -- sometimes accompanied by parents, sometimes not. Steven Hayward has written about Family Ties:

Really, I don't understand the left sometimes. They're very upset at the practice of "family separation" of migrant children at the border (a practice that goes back many years, keep in mind), but then I return to my Communist Manifesto to remind myself that a key demand for achieving socialism is abolishing the family. Nationalizing the children has been a staple of socialist visions at least since Plato. So when it comes to the voters the left wants to attract from immigrant populations, mission accomplished! U.S. border policy is just giving the left a head start.

If you think I jest about the "abolishing the family," just check out this recent item in The Nation:

Want To Dismantle Capitalism? Abolish the Family

Click on over and read Hayward's post. It also touches on the human smuggling and other criminal activities of the drug cartels in Mexico.

Concerning socialism and families, China's One Child Policy has had some interesting effects over time . . . . .

Back to the young brothers crossing the nation in 1911. Did they cross in both directions?

Music

Many years later, a descendant of the Shupe family that owned the blacksmith shop above went to California. Not on horseback. But he had a banjo.

Do you think banjos get enough respect?

Hope you have a great weekend.

A latino church leader in Palm Springs, whose church boasts 1M members, was arrested yesterday and charged with 26 felony counts of child rape, pornography, and trafficking. Two other church members were arrested and one is at large.

Naason Joachin Garcia is the leader who was arrested. The charges were outlined in a 19 page complaint from the CA AG's office of Xavier Becerra.

The church was started in Mexico in the 1920s.

In fact they said they did everything right - this in the face of millions of dollars awarded to the bakery and in the time period between the verdict and punitive damages phase. 48 When I was a fifth-grader in Idaho we kids (boys) used to walk outside town to a horse corral 50 yards or so from the ranch it was attached to.

We would hang onto the fences until a horse came by, and jump onto them bareback. The horses were mostly puzzled, and just walked around while we held onto their manes.

But one horse bit a kid.

Finally, the rancher came across us and yelled to get the hell out.

Of course we didn't tell our parents about any of this.

To ride a horse 40 miles a day would mean they had to have a high degree of physical fitness and a high skill level of self sustainment in the wild, i.e. to hunt, fish, prepare food, make shelter, care for their horses, etc.

65 One of our kids is just finishing up a trip from the headwaters of the Mississippi to the mouth of the Potomac, by bicycle. It is no trick for an experienced bicyclist to make 80 miles a day over the road, over 100 if conditions are very good.

Horses are especially good for dirt-only roads, or open country without roads if the obstacles are easy to see. They do best on light-aggregate water-bound macadam, what we call a stone road. If you're going to ride them on brick pavement or concrete, they really should have rubber-faced shoes.

Moving horse droppings from cities was a huge industry, as was the washing (and occasional carbolic acid spraying) of paved streets. Every farm in New England was devoted to growing enough hay for the big cities. The white-tailed deer was declared extinct. When the automobile put those hay farms out of business, many of them went to scrub growth, and the deer came back.

78 Hilda says it takes a village to raise a child ... which, just in the statement, makes a little sense (community is good) ... but family is the first line of defense against outside evils, then community.

But they don't really mean village, they mean a tyrannical centralized iron-fisted government, so the DC Royalty don't even have to get their hands dirty, as they issue orders on how the proles can better serve them.

Do they want school choice for the village, or even states rights on abortion ... Nope. They want all choices centralized far from the "village". Families could organize and have influence on a village, but the federal government lies to US, ignores US, and when we elect a president to stop them, they run a coup against him.

On my mom's side of the family, my great great grandfather sent his 4 kids north from Durango in 1910, alone except under the care of the eldest daughter, who was 15. They crossed the border around Ft Hancock and continued north to El Paso, where some of their cousins lived. Family says it was all legal, but who knows.

Family lore was that he sent them north to "live a better life", as if they were economic migrants. But I think it was something darker. He worked for the railroad and owned a small silver mine in the mountains, so they would have had a damned good chance to live a good life in Mexico. But he sent them north just a couple of weeks before the beginning of the Mexican Revolution. So I've always suspected that he saw what was coming, and sent them north to avoid the coming slaughter.

He didn't survive much longer. About a month later he got into a gunfight with some of Pancho Villa's thugs near his mine, and he was able to barricade himself inside, where he died from being gutshot.

I look at that episode and the present day and I don't have much sympathy for today's "asylum seekers" who are largely just gaming the system for free US government money.

- State Senator, Linda Collins Smith, of Arkansas was shot and killed tonight at 7:15 PM EDT.

- She was working with DHS insider to expose the missing $27M from DHS/Child Protective Services.

- These funds are being placed into trade, and the dividends are being filtered back to the Clinton Foundation or owned shell companies, belonging to the Clinton Foundation.

- The missing $27M was discovered when it was revealed that that DHS in Arkansas had two separate sets of books.

- It's connected to a Federal Grant that requires a specific number of children be removed from their families to meet the required quota so that they're able to renew the grant again each year.

165 Before there was bluegrass or old-timey, before Eddie Peabody or
mummers, there was an older simpler way of playing, sometimes called
the Irish style. It was pretty much just single-note melody, or riffs
and runs between sung choruses, taking advantage of the single- note
volume available (compared to other picked instruments of the mid-19th
century). Hard-strummed chords were not prevalent, as it would drown
out the singing. Except for my dad. He goes ahead and strums anyway.
Kipling reported the banjo as being the principal soldiers' instrument.

Guitars
were a Spanish thing. I've heard that they caught on mostly after the
Spanish-American War, or the advent of mail order catalogues -- your
call. But without doubt, the banjo was widespread and popular
earlier.

A kid I grew up with in Wyoming went into law enforcement, and had more than one run-in with Shepard. He was careful not to say too much off record, but Shepard was a messed kid involved with drugs and other shady things. And as others said, he was killed for far more than just being gay.

170 Graham? Re-election, presumably, explains all. Asylum law could have been fixed any time since Trump was elected - rumor has it the GOP even held both houses for Trump's first 2 years.

Only time in many years I can recall any high visibility GOP figure reacting quickly/publicly/vehemently to any development was Lindsey, on a weekend, getting all agitated and mouthy about protecting "dreamers" immediately after the illegal DACA EO was cancelled by Trump. It was sort of stunning.

All the myriad evils piling up in the country due to mass illegal migration, including death and mayhem, a daily occurrence across the country - crickets.

247 trivia, we have a branch of the Shaw family called the Bandysmiths.

The story goes that the Grants and the Shaws had a land dispute and it was decided that a trial by combat would resolve the matter. Each clan put forth 10 warriors to battle to the death on a particular day. When the day of combat came, one of the Shaw fighters was too sick to battle so the family appealed to the gathered crowd for someone to take his place so that the fight would be even. A bandy blacksmith agreed to do so for some money and when battle began, he swiftly defeated his opponent and then sat down, deeming his wages to have been earned. The family begged him to get back in the fight but he insisted that he would not unless the family adopted him and his. His wish was granted on the spot and the Shaws were victorious, the last Grant warrior springing into the loch and swimming away to escape. And thus, the Bandy-Smith branch was grafted in.

308 Contrary to our snide presentism, people really were worried as hell in the first decade of the 20th century about unaccompanied minors. Pulpy police action magazines were everywhere, telling tales, some of them actually fact-based, about the most perversion that the authors could imagine, or get set in type.
The Mann Act was also called the White Slavery Act, which of course didn't mean actual forced-labor, but sexual captivity. Every set of waggling tongues were telling tales of children snatched away for immoral purposes.

I guaran- damn - tee that every time these happy adventure tales were told, there were those there to carry on about how this would not end well. You'll find the Scouting movement, and other adult-supervised youth activity groups (4H, 1902, Campfire 1910) , all springing up in response to those concerns, right at that time.

IA's looters, er "conservative" senators - were just crowing this week about expanding the idiotic biofuel program. Not much center of gravity in America's center of gravity, it seems sometimes.

The more the swamp changes, the more it stays the same. The only Senator (I know of) with a far-reaching voice who's opposed those subsidies right on Iowa territory is Tom Cotton. I don't know if he'll ever be president -- he's boring as sawdust and Republicans seem to be enchanted by Dan Crenshaw, who plays Tom Cotton -- but he may be the best person to carry on the Trumpian legacy.

Equality. You know. Where the absolute best females victoriously achieve what the last place males barely squeak by.

340 Lee acknowledged that a mass exodus could dent livelihoods, but cited black bus drivers affected by the Civil Rights Movement-era boycott in Montgomery.

"I know it's going to affect people's livelihood. But that's how things change," Lee said.

341 I've got the edging done in the front yard. I still have to edge the back yard and mow front and back. Wow, I don't have the energy or stamina for this today. I'm usually able to complete the edging without taking a break.

342 The Abernathy boys wrote a book about their adventures. I read it about 15 years ago. Their first adventure was from their ranch in Oklahoma to meet their dad in New Mexico. Totally unaccompanied. Think they were 7 and 5 at the time.

Ryan Shupe's dad taught classical violin in addition to fiddling. Helped arrange old-time fiddling events. You could tell the fiddlers who had classical training because they played in tune. Ryan probably doesn't need Autotune.

I seem to recall something about Ryan playing the mandolin while growing up, but I'm not sure.
