Saturday Afternoon Chess Thread 05-25-2019

Anybody Up For An Online Tournament?

Remember a couple of years ago when I set up that AoSHQ group on Chess.com and then did nothing with it, so it kind of died? Well, that was my bad, but I've just heard from a moron who wants to get a tournament going:

I'm a paid member [of Chess.com] and I was poking around the settings. [Setting up a tournament] doesn't seem too complicated and I'd be happy to [do it]. Maybe toss out a mention on the next chess thread to gauge interest? See what format of tourney, and what sort of time controls they'd go for. For an initial tourney, Swiss would probably work best, 8 games, give or take (depending on participation) with maybe a 10-15 minutes time control, Standard, and maybe an increment of +5, just to see how it goes. Just browsing the member list, there's enough people that have been online in the past 24 hours to suggest we've got a pretty active group. I'm betting we could get a regularly monthly thing going. Let me know what you think.

So I'm just throwing this out there like chum from a bucket. Anyone want in on this? Let me know in the comments.

As always, the chess/dress pr0n thread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment.

And the occasional fishing thread will be up later up this evening.

Solutions Update

Easier Problem - White To Play

20190525 - Problem 1.jpg
8/R6p/5K1k/1b6/6P1/8/8/8 w - - 0 1

1. Ra5 Be8
2. Rh5+

Naturally, I didn't find this line. What I found was 2.g5+ Kh5 3.g6+ Kh6 4.Rh5+ Kxh5 5.gxh7 which still wins, but takes way longer.

2...Bxh5
3.g5#

Simple and neat.

More Challenging Problem - White To Play

20190525 - Problem 2.jpg
8/8/5p2/8/8/2K5/P5k1/8 w - - 0 1

1.Kd4!

You don't want to start out with the pawn race, e.g. 1.a4 f5 2.a5 f4 3.a6 f3 4.a7 f2 5.a8=Q+ and draw because White's king doesn't have time to help the queen capture Black's pawn. So you will need to get the king over to the pawn without loss of tempo.

1...Kg3
2.Ke4 Kg4

And now is the time to run the pawn.

3.a4 f5+
4.Kd3 f4
5.a5 f3
6.a6 Kg3

If 6...f2 then 7.Ke2 Kg3 8.Kf1

7.a7 f2
8.Ke2 Kg2
9.a8=Q+ followed by Qf8, winning.

Hope to see you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

22 That peach silk dress is gorgeous. My friend moved into a house in DC that had peach silk curtains that kind of looked like that. She didn't like them, and I said if she ever took them down I'd love to have them just for the fabric. I think they moved again before she took them down, alas.

And I love all those gowns in the next picture. If only I had one, and somewhere to wear it.

Posted by: bluebell at May 25, 2019 06:45 PM (aXucN)

23 Seocnd problem:

Without analyzing fully, looks like 1 Kd4 forced black to move his king up to save his own pane, but then white pushes the A-pawn til it queens and the black pawn in on c2, then Qh1! Covers the queening square and keeps' black king away.

Without doing the K move first on move 1, black gets the ol' "Bishop pawn on seventh rank vs. a Q is a draw because of stalemate in the corner" trick.

Well, you've got the right idea, i.e. you just can't just start a pawn race, because that is how you will guarantee a draw. You need to use your king to pick up a tempo (or tempi).

Posted by: OregonMuse. AoSHQ Thought Leader & Pants Monitor at May 25, 2019 06:51 PM (+aReV)

It's what I think I want, but it isn't really. I played a game by radio against a guy in Georgia on a weekly net - basically postal chess by ham radio. It lasted about four moves before we both got bored. The only way I could play a whole game is against someone face to face, with conversation on the side. My attention span isn't long enough otherwise.

39 Problem #2
1. Kd4

The idea is to force the Black king to come out to protect the pawn and relinquish control of the f1 square. Once the white King squats on f1, the pawn is blocked, and the Black king is too far away to stop the white pawn. Or if the Black king doesn't come out, pick off the pawn

151 I love the side by side of Betty and Joan. There was a Mad Men episode with the theme was that every woman is either a Jackie (angular) or a Marylin (curvy). The guy was pointing out women in the office and saying she's a Jacqueline, she's a Marylin, until he got to Joan and said "well Marylin is really a Joan".

It was an instructive show for me because I was so in love with Betty. She's so hawt. And horrible. It took me years to come to terms with the fact that she could be so awful because she was so hot.

You're welcome. And by 'in the pipeline', I just meant that I have other pics and photos lined up ready to use in future threads.

I mean, if you consider all my regular threads, I have to collect library/book themed pics, food pics, political meme pics, dress pr0n, and 'who dis' pics. Oh, and ugly pants pics. And I have to keep track of which ones I use. It's actually quite time-consuming, but since I'm retired, I can afford it.

Indirect cooking. Pile the charcoal on one side of the grill. Place the steak on the grill on the side without the coals. Place the thicker side closer to the heat, it will cook faster.

210 39 I've done as many sequence of moves as I could, and haven't found a path to where the white pawn queens first without the African American pawn queening, and no subsequent moves to force a pin to remove the African American queen. As long as the African American king keeps the white king off of the F file, he can match the moves of white's pawn, and even gain a move with checks.
What's interesting is that I decided to test a new chess engine analyzer, and even at 45 seconds analytical time (millions of moves a second), which is supposed to be damn near grandmaster level, it could not find a solution. Clearly there weren't enough moves to stifle the engine, so I tried a couple of other engines, and none of them found a solution. It will be interesting to see the answer later on.

242 Since Trump was elected:

Two PMs in Italy have been ousted and the new guy is a nationalist.

Australia has a new PM who was just re-elected, unexpectedly, and he is a nationalist.

Ukraine has a new President and he is a nationalist.

And now the UK is going to get a new PM and it is likely to be Boris Johnson, a nationalist.

All 4 of those countries were involved in trying to take down Trump.

Aliens, obviously.

245 I don't think anyone spelled it out but the Morgan is an American breed of horse. Kinda like the Jeep of horses. They can do most everything quite well. That's why some riders were wearing cowboy hats and some full riding outfits. Different attire for different events.

I didn't know that, thanks. I admit I know absolutely nothing about horse breeds. Or horses in general.

If I ever need to buy a horse, that sounds like a decent choice. good all around, and probably good resale value.

I think they do. The horse perked up when she was around and nuzzled her.

Ben would know better.

I was trying to come up with a way to explain that I am unaccustomed to dealing with cuts of beef with this little surface area to volume ratio, in a way that the Horde wouldn't just run with. After a while, it turned into various iterations of "I'm not used to dealing with meat this thick, but I'm just going to do my best to try to choke it down."

337 Oh, this steak was also 100% grass pasture raised, which probably explains why it looked much more rare than it is.

338 Just read at HotAir that George Takes wants to move to Kentucky just to run against Mitch McConnell.

I sincerely hope he does spend a ton of money to do just that. I'd love to see Cocaine Mitch carve, skin and deep-fry Stupid Sulu to within an inch of his life, just like one of Colonel Sander's breasts.

Well, the steak's done. Pretty good. A little more rare than I like, but
it was the thicker end. The other piece will be better tomorrow, I bet.

345 Why not start the pawn race right away?

The white pawn Queens first *and* checks the black king in that same 5th move. If black wastes a move getting the King out of the line of fire, then with 6. Qh1 black is done.

346 I came up with this for problem 1.

1. g5 Kh5
2. Rxh7

This still leaves the black bishop out there but he can't keep me from queening and winning.

347 I'd tournament.

Posted by: Roscoe at May 26, 2019 08:58 AM (zaohv)

348 345 Because the White king cannot be used to support the attack on the Black pawn. White cannot force the Black king away from the Black pawn
without perpetual check or a stalemate trap. The key for White to win is being able to get the White king to e2 to prevent Black from protecting f1 and the Black pawn.
