omg this is so embarrassing

Al Gore's Masculinity Adviser Naomi Wolf wrote a book about "forbidden love" or whatever.

A central claim of her book is that people were executed in England for sodomy as late as the 1830s.

She bases this on seeing the words "death recorded" on a number of sodomy cases.

It turns out "death recorded" doesn't mean that the prisoner was executed, but that the possibility of a death sentence was noted, and then the judge pardoned them.

This is the central claim of her book and she didn't bother to look up the meaning of the phrase. She just... guestimated.

The cringe, it is exquisite.

This would be professional suicide for anyone who was not a Democrat agitator. For them, there is no such thing as professional embarrassment, just alternate pathways to promotion.

More from John Sexton and Ed Driscoll at Instapundit.

Imagine spending about nine months writing a book and then going out to promote it and only learning then that a "fact" central to your thesis is just completely wrong, and so your entire book is now not even fit to be pulped.

88 It's feelings that matter not facts.

If you read a book by a professional historian, you will find acknowledgments to a whole bunch of other professional historians who reviewed the manuscript.

One of the reasons for doing that is to catch factual errors - you can't be an expert about everything, but if a dozen people in your field review what you write, that markedly decreases the chances of making a mistake.

Naomi's above all that, of course.

I didn't know it was she who started that myth. It never made any sense to me. If it was really true that football fans snap and beat their wives when their team loses, it stands to reason that it would be more commonplace on any ordinary weekend during the football season. By the time of the Super Bowl, all the teams but two have been eliminated, which means most fans won't have as much emotionally invested in the game as they would if their team was in it.

131 I've been laughing about this Naomi Wolf self-implosion all day. Absolute ecstasy.

Secondary hilarious blunder:

One of the main cases she gets all weepy about is a poor UNDERAGE BOY who got "executed" merely for being gay. Except...

1. The boy wasn't executed at all (as per Ace's main post), but instead had his sentence commuted and was eventually let out of jail; and...
2. He wasn't convicted of merely being gay -- he was convicted OF RAPING A TODDLER IN THE ASS.

The evidence against was so heinous that according to the standards of the era, it could not even be described to the public.

So the situation is the complete reverse of what Naomi Wolf got the SADZ about:

Instead of a poor little gay boy getting executed for merely being gay, what REALLY happened is that a psychotic child-raping pedophile walked free!

Oooooooooops. Narrative MEGAFAIL.

Meanwhile, when AIDs first hit the scene and was tearing the queer community to shreds, not a single piece of research into anal sex was to be found. Not a single one. For at least a decade ... while they yelped that "AIDs is a heterosexual disease, too" though the only heterosexuals who were getting AIDs were intravenous drug users, hemophiliacs and those practicing anal sex. Hey, in Portland, an illegal immigrant was convicted of raping a dog. The county sheriff refused to tell ICE when the dog raper would be let out of jail, and he was released without ICE knowing about it.

Fortunately, ICE was able to catch him at home, arrested him, and began deportation proceedings.

190 Her work unintentionally brings to public attention that the English upper classes have always had an unnatural sympathy for perversion and child rape. The recent epidemic of Muslims grooming young lower-class English girls for rape and prostitution can be traced directly to this warped and devilish defect in the national character.

A popular uprising with mobs, torches, and mass hangings of sick upper class poofters and their apologists such as Naomi Wolfe is in order.

193 On a more heterosexual note:

Just watched the 1967 spy spoof "Fathom," starring Raquel Welch.

O.
M.
G.

If you have not ever seen this film, get ahold of it!

Why?

The plot is completely absurd. Austin-Powers-level mid-'60s spy silliness that makes almost zero sense. B-movie-level acting from just about everyone involved. Ludicrous dialogue. Good for campiness and kitsch, but that's about it, movie-wise.

HOWEVER, it stars Raquel Welch in her absolute prime, and in fact is the ONLY movie to star Raquel Welch in her absolute prime. In all the other movies from the era (10,000,000 Years BC, Myra Breckenridge, etc.) she's merely a side character with limited screen time. But in "Fathom," she's the star of the film and in nearly every scene, and is on-screen about 90% of the time.

And although the film is G-rated and "family-friendly," Raquel is absolutely SCORCHING in every single frame. Unreal. The film may technically be G-rated, but it fells like it's X-rated, she oozes so much sexuality.

It's not until I saw "Fathom" that I understood why Raquel Welch was regarding as such a sex symbol in the '60s. At that moment in her life (1967), she was the pinnacle of sexuality and beauty. And no other film really captured it except this goofy drive-in spy caper spoof.

Yowza!

They'd hook up with 5 or 10 guys in a night - total strangers - when they were active. It was just weird. And they're very proud of it and of turning pretty much every public space with a tiny amount of privacy into a pick-up/sex spot. They have no boundaries, at all.

209 This seems to be a problem with the chattering class. Years ago there was an incident with an aircraft and a reporter asked the air traffic controller: You told the pilot "I'll call your base. Did you in fact contact his base?"

That's not what it means. An approach to land has three legs, downwind, base, and final. When the controller says he'll call your base, he's saying he wants you to extend your downwind leg more than normal and to not execute your downwind-to-base turn until he tells you. Usually done for aircraft spacing.

215 This episode reminds me of enough things I experienced in college that it actually just made me want to toss my lunch.

Ran into a number of academics that were - as far as I know - competent in their specialization, who nonetheless went down various paths in their work and/or lectured on the interaction between their subject and another subject and demonstrated this very sort of total bonehead misunderstanding of something.

Some got the deer-in-the-headlights aspect when you told them; some nitpicked back at you; some just straight up got really pissed off and argumentative.

Having seen the state higher ed was in back then, I'm not at all surprised that we've arrived where we are now. One of the big things we're missing in schools these days as a result of jettisoning study of ancient western civ is the understanding that cultures can, and do, regress. Kids these days things things are going to get better simply because the clock is running.

In graduate school (pre-AIDS), there was a cute gay guy in our social circle who was consoling a woman in our circle, who was upset because she had been unfaithful to her boyfriend.

He introduced the concept of "reasonable fidelity", and explained that since he had a boyfriend at a different university a couple of hundred miles away from him, that he was "reasonably faithful" to him.

Intrigued, we questioned him on this, and it turned out that he had slept with one hundred other men in the prior year. This was "reasonable fidelity", because he could have slept with so many more men, you see.

Truly, an alternate sexual universe.

248 Look, one might actually understand someone assuming "death recorded" meant that the person was executed, if it were something they were taking a quick look at. But to be doing the in-depth research for a book cataloging the Wests "abuse and executions of homosexuals" (see! We're just like the muslims you are complaining about! So stop casting stones!") But things go even deeper than that. Did everyone note the toss away line at the end? The one guy was in prison for forcibly sodomizing a six year old boy, ffs. Which leads to three obvious conclusions: 1) not only did Ms Wolf not read through the Old Bailey's guide to the terms it uses where "death recorded" was explained, but that she did not even read through all the records at the Old Bailey on these people to see what they were actually in prison for; 2) that if these people were having their sentences commuted from death, even under these circumstances, it suggests that the West was much more merciful and liberal towards these people that any other culture (I mean, ffs, the Iranians are throwing them off buildings! Right now! God knows what they were doing in early to mid 1800s!; and 3) Naomi Wolf is a retarded pseudo-academician with the work ethic and research skills of your average 7th grader. Essentially, she foudn a table, saw that it seemed to say what she wanted "West bad, kills gays! and then downed tools and stopped working. Probably fixed herself a nice cosmo and put up her feet. Meanwhile - the facts show the opposite of what she is concluding (not to mention the fact that she had to go to Old Bailey records form the 1830 just to find anything). And, to top it off - it seems, form what little we know that factual, that some portion of these cases consisted of cases of forcible, non consenual anal rape. So, unless Ms. Wolf's premise is that anal rape is A-OK as long as the rapist is gay (which frankly I would not rule out for our current crop of modern socialist evil pedophile infanticide folks) what is her point?

Absolutely atrocious - but again, we keep hearing that the Democrats are the "party of science-y science amirite? - I say this they are certainly not the party of research.

What a bunch of liars.

290 I thought that academia was, well, academic, up until I actually went to college. Then I discovered that all these supposed smart folks do is make shit up and publish it, daring anyone else to call bullshit upon it.

How else did we end up with adults seriously considering mentally ill men to be women? Where else did we get something called a MICROaggression that debilitates actual adults?

I remember when MICRO meant small, as in, not important, except if it were attached to micro-wave or something like that.

I also remember when we used to shun and laugh at men parading around in women's clothing. Now we let them get naked in the girls locker room.

They just make shit up and repeat it until some people are mesmerized into thinking it's true.

I still have shame. I cannot participate in that sort of shit show. I must not be "academic" or "intelligentsia".

We're talking counterrevolutionary paranoia, witch-trials level of insanity. You do *anything* that rubs someone the wrong way and they have more victim olympics mojo than you, and boom, you have committed a microaggression. Sometimes all it takes is simply talking, saying anything at all. Or saying nothing, if you're expected to chime in with some sort of confession or self-deprecating observations.

Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair

One of my editors at a big book publishing house was a totally nebbishy, very slender tiny little gay gay around 40 years old. He was one the few gay guys I've ever known who seemed nearly asexual. He liked watching opera and reading poetry and never mentioned ever having a boyfriend. His only statement on the subject was that he preferred much older men -- his ideal man, he said, was Alastair Cooke -- and that older men generally weren't interested in relationships, even platonic ones.

Anyway, over the years, I'd always thought of this guy as the one counter-example - -the one gay guy was WASN'T hypersexualized.

And then...

...about four years ago I met him for a business lunch, and afterward as we were putting on our jackets, he asked where I was going, and I said grocery shopping. TO be polite, I asked where he was going, and he replied, just offhandedly and cavalierly, "The bathhouse." The followed a one-minute conversation in which he said that while of course he prefers older men for emotional relationships, he still needs to ejaculate several times a day and the bathhouse is the only convenient place on workdays.

I tried to stop my jaw from hitting the floor.

And ever since, I've always thought to myself, "If even THAT GUY was oversexed, I'd wager that basically ALL gay men are oversexed, because he was the least sexual gay guy I've ever encountered."

377 As posted above, there are few studies of promiscuity among gay men, even though it's a serious topic. Here's one:
"Bell and Weinberg reported evidence of widespread sexual compulsion among homosexual men. 83% of the homosexual men surveyed estimated they had had sex with 50 or more partners in their lifetime, 43% estimated they had sex with 500 or more partners; 28% with 1,000 or more partners."

"There is an extremely low rate of sexual fidelity among homosexual men as compared to married heterosexuals. Among married females 85% reported sexual fidelity. Among married men, 75.5% reported sexual fidelity. Among homosexual males in their current relationship, 4.5% reported sexual fidelity"
