The Quotes of The Day
Quote I
“When hate comes armed, it can be deadly,” . “But right now, there is no federal law that prevents people convicted of misdemeanor hate crimes from owning or buying guns — a situation that defies both common sense and common decency.” John Feinblatt
Quote II
“Who decides what is the soul of Google and what Google is?” “Is it leadership or employees? There’s a real battle for the soul of these companies right now.Lokman Tsui
Quote III
In some important ways, my generation has failed you. We spent too much time debating, too focused on the fight and not enough on progress. Tim Cook
Quote IV
"[T]he court is not naïve to reality," Mehta wrote, admitting there "is a chance that some records obtained from Mazars will become public soon after they are produced." Barack Obama-appointed judge Amit P. Mehta
Quote V
“That’s consistent with the city’s goal all along, which is to put this in front of the court, let the courts decide whether these ordinances are permissible under Pennsylvania law. The city is not looking to prejudice anyone while those decisions are made. That’s why the city entered into the agreement today.” Eric Tirschwell
On May 7, hackers infected about 10,000 of Baltimore city government’s computers with an aggressive form of ransomware called RobbinHood, and insisted the city pay 13 bitcoin (then $76,280, today $102,310) to cut the computers loose. The hackers claimed the price would go up every day after four days, and after the tenth day, the affected files would be lost forever.
“We won’t talk more, all we know is MONEY!” the ransom note read. “Hurry up! Tik Tak, Tik Tak, Tik Tak!”
But the city has not paid. In the two weeks since, Baltimore citizens have not had access to many city services. The city payment services and email systems are still offline.
Hunt’s, the company known for making various preserved tomato products like ketchup and tomato sauce, has officially apologized for assuming the sex of its canned sloppy Joe mix. The company is also apologizing for the carbnormative slogan, “A sandwich is just a sandwich, but a Manwich is a meal.”
A spokesman for ConAgra Foods, owner of Hunt’s, says Manwich might self-identify as a man, but so far discussions have been unproductive.
A top California environmental regulator is threatening to enact tough, new pollution rules -- including an unprecedented ban on cars burning petroleum-based fuels -- in response to a Trump administration plan to relax vehicle emission standards.
California Air Resources Board Chairman Mary Nichols said the state would be forced to pursue “extreme” requirements to offset the uptick in pollution that would be unleashed if federal vehicle emission and fuel economy standards are weakened.
The Women’s Resource Center at San Diego State University apologized on Thursday for sharing an image of an armed Palestinian hijacker, calling it “disrespectful to members of our Jewish community.”
The image — included in a May 8th newsletter that has since been retracted — featured Leila Khaled, who helped seize two planes in Europe in 1969 and 1970 on behalf of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), while holding an AK-47 assault rifle. It was accompanied by the text, “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.”
The slogan has been used by Islamist and other Palestinian nationalist groups to refer to the establishment of an Arab state in the territory between the Jordan River and Mediterranean Sea, in place of Israel.
A 33-year-old law-school graduate from London decided to start her own her own retail company selling vintage clothes online after struggling to find a job because of her good looks.
Russian-born Irina Kova claims that being attractive has made it harder for her to get a job in London, as women simply don’t trust her or find her intimidating, and men don’t take her seriously. Kova, who used to work in business development for important clients, believes her good looks ruined her career and made it harder to find another serious job, despite having a law-degree and an impressive CV.
A new network of 3D-printed gun advocates is growing in America – and this time things are different. Unlike previous attempts to popularise 3D-printed guns, this operation is entirely decentralised. There’s no headquarters, no trademarks, and no real leader. The people behind it reckon that this means they can’t be stopped by governments.
“If they [the government] were to come after me, they’d first have to find my identity,” says Ivan the Troll, a member of the group. “I’m one of many, many like-minded individuals who’re doing this sort of work.”
Greystanes High School in New South Wales notified pupils and parents that on “Rainbow Mufti Day,” those not openly participating in ‘International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia’ would be pressed for increased contributions to the National Youth Mental Health Foundation.
The notice was delivered via a Facebook post, which has since been edited, as well as a letter allegedly sent to students and parents.
“GHS will show our support for International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia on Friday so wear an item of rainbow clothing,” the school wrote on the original Facebook post, accompanied by a rainbow emoji.
As outlined by Hotair on Saturday, the “soda tax” has actually led to Philadelphia residents traveling outside the city to buy their soda (and likely other goods), decreased the city’s revenue, and led to layoffs in the local beverage industry and cut hours for employees at small markets. It did not, however, lead to an increase in healthier beverage purchases in the city.
When the soda tax was first announced, workers at Pepsi took a hit. “With sales slumping because of the new Philadelphia sweetened beverage tax, Pepsi said Wednesday that it will lay off 80 to 100 workers at three distribution plants that serve the city,” philly.com reported in March of 2017.
Businesses from fashion giants to hedge funds to venture capital firms are building teams focused on figuring out how to turn the information they capture into valuable insights.
“There’s such a high demand across industries for people with data-science skills,” said Amanda Stansell, senior research analyst at Glassdoor.
Recruitment for this profession will continue as more companies accumulate data and figure out what to to do with it, Stansell added.
Tech jobs dominated Glassdoor’s list of the top 25 highest-paying entry-level positions. Software engineer ranked second, with a median base salary of $90,000. The only non-technical and non-business profession on the list was physical therapists with a median salary of just under $64,000.

Just because you want something to be true, doesn't make it so. I identify as a rich person but my banker says otherwise.
NBC News has some big news for all the young dudes out there. (It’s Monday. You can forgive me one Mott the Hoople reference.) If you’re a man, you can get pregnant and deliver a baby. But you’re facing some unfair challenges because the medical community isn’t really up to speed on the whole situation and they will probably make some mistakes in your prenatal care. Here’s part of the coverage in this breaking story.
Chicago has collected $2 million in tax from Sony, Eventbrite and Fandango, becoming the first large city to successfully tax digital streaming and service providers, Bloomberg reports.
The four-year-old levy, dubbed the "Netflix tax," still faces a lawsuit from a group representing Netflix, Amazon Prime and Spotify customers.
Other cities and states are considering taxing digital services, as more and more shopping moves online.
A new report has revealed that support of the First Amendment among college students seems to be decreasing, as nearly half of students believe that hate speech should not be protected.
Conducted by the Knight Foundation, the survey reveals that 41 percent of college students believe hate speech should not be protected under the First Amendment, while 58 percent believe that it should be protected. While the majority of students believe that hate speech should be protected, 53 percent of college women contend it should not be protected, as well a majority of black students.
Over half of college students agree that shouting speakers down is “always” or “sometimes” acceptable. At the same time, 83 percent of college students agree that using violence to end an event is “never acceptable.”

The ONT Musical Interlude
A certain musician by the name of Robert Zimmerman Bob Dylan celebrates his 77th birthday on Friday May 24th.
Jacksonville, Florida – Breon Hollings started a Facebook Live stream to show off all of his drug money. What he didn’t expect was that the police were already outside with a search warrant, and they were coming in.

Continuing to work after winning the lottery isn't a bad thing. Unless you're a Genius Award Winner.
A little more than a year ago, Karlee Harbst was the smiling winner of a $1 million prize in the Florida Lottery. She had even won a $100 prize a week earlier.
The money was coming at a great time too, because Harbst was reportedly pregnant.
But last week, the 27-year-old Port Orange woman was among more than 20 suspects apprehended by police in a major drug bust, according to reports. She was reportedly charged with solicitation to deliver heroin and unlawful use of a two-way communication device, and made her first court appearance Friday in connection with the case.
Billionaire Robert F. Smith, who received an honorary doctorate at Morehouse College’s Sunday morning graduation exercises, had already announced a $1.5 million gift to the school.
But during his remarks in front of the nearly 400 graduating seniors, the technology investor and philanthropist surprised some by announcing that his family was providing a grant to eliminate the student debt of the entire Class of 2019.

Donations to this cause and to future fundraising causes are voluntary.”
“We would like to apologise if you received the impression that students ‘must pay’. We acknowledge the school has played a role in creating this impression and that the letter was poorly expressed.”

I once fed a Markov chain text generator the Declaration, Constitution, and some chapters from "Cryptonomicon". Here are two of the amendments from that little exercise:
Amendment 26 1. The right of citizens of the United States is hereby repealed.
Amendment 6 In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be jettisoned, like a spent booster stage from a rocket. The big question is whether this makes sense in the long run, to be a real pain in the ass if it means backing down from casual fistfights.
3. This article shall be inoperative unless it shall have originated, who shall enter the Objections at large on their Journal, and proceed to reconsider it. If after such Reconsideration two thirds of the several States, as provided in the Constitution, within seven years from the date of the submission hereof to the States respectively, the Appointment of the Officers, and the Authority of the United States; he may require the Opinion, in writing, of the principal Officer in each of the razor blades and a hunk of carbon.

Cook County (where the City of Chicago is located) initiated a pop tax a couple of years ago.
It went about as well as expected, meaning it chased shoppers over the county lines on every side. Hard to escape from Chicago itself, but the rest of the county crossed county & state lines.
So much money was lost, along with jobs, that the county repealed the tax! Shocking I know.
And the county executive who pushed for the tax and vocally defended it to the bitter end, was one Toni Preckwinkle. Who just ran for Chicago mayor and lost bigly. Sad!

Now tell us the Anti-Federalist position ... that anything you codify will be used against you because Power always trumps Law. Several Anti-Federalist argued that the Bill of Rights was a Fool's Errand ... because the Federal would use that to interject itself into State's Business - and that something as simple as the 10th would not restrain them.

Who answers a poll call? Any call I get from a number I don't recognize goes to voice mail.
They must be polling nursing home residents who still have a landline in their room.

Actually, if it was only seniors in nursing homes answering pollsters calls, that should help Republicans.
41% is a dismal number and 60% feel Trump does not deserve re-election. An equally dismal number.
Even Rasmussen has shown Trump's approval falling drastically in the last week, and you guys love Rasmussen.

Trump has 95% support among Republicans, for starters - it's why The Bulwark has readership numbers less than Modern Linoleum Monthly.
And there are cracks in the Democratic coalition - working-class minorities are noticing that they are doing a lot better economically than they were under Saint Obama.
This poll was commissioned, and done, by people who hate Trump, hate anyone who voted for Trump, and think that anyone who voted for Trump should be thrown into a reeducation camp.

Color me skeptical about Ms. Kova. She's in "business development", and her good looks are causing her trouble?
I doubt it.
That's not to say that looks can't cause problems. Naomi Wu (young Chinese female with large fake breasts, who frequently wears skimpy clothes both in her videos, and when out in public) has been accused of being the pretty face for some mysterious man who does the real work in her videos. She also gets attacked by those who claim that she only looks the way that she does to get eyeballs. But Ms. Wu is also a maker (she programs, uses tools - including a soldering iron, and does 3D printing). And if there's one thing that stereotypes have told us about women in STEM, it's that they don't care at all about their appearance. At least, they don't right up until the big finale of the movie, when they clean up and reveal that they were really stunningly gorgeous all along.
Ms. Kova's career isn't the kind that catches those kinds of stereotypes.

Laura Ingraham just had a segment about the show - they said that Carroll O'Conner based his character on Jackie Gleason combined with Jimmy Cagney and that he always said he never looked down on Archie. 167 I read at Ken Levine's blog that Jimmy Kimmel is having produced for TV, a live re-enactment of two classic sitcom episodes. One is from All In The Family, the other will be from The Jeffersons.
Woody Harrelson will play Archie and Marisa Tomei will play Edith.
Posted by: qdpsteve at May 22, 2019 10:32 PM (miE9U)
It wasn't bad, but I felt that Woody. Marisa, and Jamie Foxx were trying too hard to play the original actors playing the characters. Jamie had the only openly visible screwup - and it broke a good joke. Wanda Sykes seemed natural - played it understated, and one of the original Jeffersons actresses played her original role and absolutely killed it.
They played clips from the original in the aftershow, and it didn't make the remake look good at all.

Been through several hurricanes. Irma was the most recent. But I have to say that it is tornadoes that I fear the most. Very little time to prep and the devastation that they bring is horrendous. At least with hurricanes we know ahead of time and have days and sometimes a week or more of warnings that we have a good chance of getting hit. More time to get ready or leave.

Great idea for retired folks. Become an official identity group, start gathering your grievances, invade college campuses, demand access to all public spaces, get offended at all the youth-oriented activities and demand spaces exclusively for yourselves, demand free parking, a doubling of facilities for the less-abled, and a platform for your views. I could see that as a movie or t.v. series or a real live thing that rogue roving retired people do and YouTube about it.

Purest harassment. Part of their shtick is to continuously claim that Trump has "scandals", and is unfit to be President.
They also hope that their base won't notice that they aren't actually impeaching Trump if they pull this crap.
But that's OK - when we retake the House in 2020, I think that the House has an intense legislative interest in examining Soros' tax returns, the Clinton's tax returns, Al Gore's tax returns, Gavin Newsom's tax returns, and on and on and on.
The fact that all these returns will publicly leak is unfortunate, but what can you do?

So what can they do? Keep digging.
Now if Trump turned over his tax returns and the lefties couldn't find anything outright criminal, their next move would be to demand ALL his business records for the past ten years. After that, his bank records for the past ten years. After that, everything on his hard drive. After that...

My Irish ancestors are rolling over in their graves!
In the land of stout and spirits, Ireland's first 'dry pub' https://tinyurl.com/y3mnh9he
https://t.co/U2qpRuokQI?amp=1
"However if you look at the Irish they are a very progressive nation, they are a very liberal nation, they're very open to change.
"I think there's a real cultural shift happening globally towards alcohol and we're really at the forefront of it."...
At The Virgin Mary, drinks have been designed with those served at the city's 750 traditional pubs in mind.
A dark and creamy "iced nitro coffee" is poured from a beer tap to mimic Guinness, without which no traditional Irish pub would be complete.
Fridges are stocked with non-alcoholic beer bottles and "mocktail" ingredients such as cold coffee brew and sour cherry cordial are stacked like an array of apothecary potions.
And the pub's signature drink The Virgin Mary -- a cheeky play on the classic Bloody Mary -- is made of tomato juice, muscat, pickle, lime and spice.
As well as mimicking the hard stuff, the bar matches pub opening hours and advertises to an older clientele in order to carve its own niche and avoid association with cafes and juice bars...

However scary tornadoes might be there are far worse disasters.. like tsunamis. My husband was watching videos of the Japanese tsunami earlier tonight and the destruction they caused is truly staggering. Huge walls of water and debris coming out of nowhere, and nowhere to hide from it.

Of course, that CPA will know nothing about the reasons for Trump actually getting those deductions because Trump had some Wall Street CPA firm and white shoe law firm actually do the tax returns and they know every damn deduction and loophole known to man and the IRS

OK, I'm done counting for the night, but here's what I have so far:
From the start of his career to age 40, Bob Dylan played 489 live shows.
From age 40-50, he played 481, bringing the total to 970.
From age 50-60, he played 1015(!), bringing the total to 1985.
I knew he had played more live shows after turning 50 than before, but I didn't know he more than doubled his pre-50 total in 10 years.
He's not resting on his laurels, that's for sure.

It's hard to let the little furbazoids go after they've carved out a spot in our hearts. The last two kitties I lost made it to 18 and 20 respectively, but it wasn't any easier when they went. Current ones are about 8. Thought long and hard before getting them, and when they go I don't think I'll get any more, so as not to leave any orphans behind. I can only imagine it's harder for them than it is for us, since they have no way of understanding where their people went.

So I'm up late in a stupid hotel room and there's a new one on. Butchers. They're going to compete at butchering.

In 2006 we had a large tornado hit Springfield IL after dark on a Sunday night... me, hubs and daughter had to scramble to the underground tunnels under the Univ of Illinois Springfield library for shelter. Although we didn't get any damage there was lots of damage elsewhere in town. That tornado was "only" F2 but it was pretty damn scary, and there were two more tornado warnings that night, so I would say that was the longest night of my life. So the responsible official at the MD whose actions led to the death of the 14-yr old girl at the hands of illegals isn't the slightest bit abashed at her role in a murder in her community. You see, an ICE detainer is not a warrant.
The failure of Trump and his administration to do *anything* of importance in squelching this unbelievable and outrageous irresponsibility of "sanctuary" - not even to make any effort to properly fix and demonize and politicize it at the congressional level - is incredibly damaging.
Then again, city and state electorates, and "law enforcement""public servants" willing to tolerate and implement these policies, effectively signal the end of the country, and the civic culture.

Well, I got one Triumph Spitfire trunnion bushing done today. The bushing kits had wrong parts in them. If I used the flat washers provided, the inner sleeve came up 3.5 mm short of matching the installed length of the bushings plus washers. Tighten up the through bolt, and the whole thing would lock up solid. Called the parts seller, got their tech. The washers are supposed to be thin, like shim stock, almost. Tried re-using one of the old ones, plus a new one, hand made. Still came up over a millimeter short. So I shit-canned the washers altogether, cut down the O.D. of the bushing flanges in the lathe, and used smaller "O" rings sized to the cut-down flanges. When I tightened the bolt, it locked the vertical link onto the inner sleeve, which remained free to turn in the bushings.
And I did drill and tap for a grease zerk, and it does take grease, woo-hoo! And I serviced the rear brake, and replaced the brake hose, too. That corner is now done, save for brake bleeding, which I will do all together.

> There must have been some pretty exotic weather back in the Cretaceous Period when there was an inland seaway extending from the Gulf of Mexico clear to the Arctic.
Yeah, I can imagine. Probably not just tornados, but monster hurricanes coming up that puppy.
Like all storms, tornadoes and hurricanes are basically just heat engines. Heat flows from a hot reservoir to a cold one and mechanical energy is extracted along the way. The temperature differential is more important than the absolute temperature per se.
> I've never understood the mechanics of tornadoes. Hot air plus cold air equals mad twirling wind.
While there are still a lot of nuances that are under debate/research, at a fundamental level it's the same process as when you pull the plug in the bathtub or flush the toilet. If a layer of dense air winds up on top of a layer of less-dense air (for instance, by being blown in fast enough that the less-dense air can't "get out of the way"), it wants to sink and the less-dense air wants to rise, just as the dense water in the tub or toilet wants to sink.
If this happens slowly, sort of a slow mixing process, nothing much happens except that the any moisture in the warm air will condense out as it cools, and will fall as rain or appear as fog.
If the temperature difference is enough that the rising/sinking becomes too rapid for normal diffusive mixing to occur, it starts rotating and you get a vortex.

Well, it has been wild west night here in the great white north. Little League game in Mt. View, which frequent fliers will know as the "most diverse" neighborhood in the world, meaning poor folks living however they can, amongst the Samoan gangs and drug dealers of all other stripes. In the past we have been plagued there with black bears, moose, and the occasional drunken asshole, plus the coach of that particular group of infidels is a bit of an anger problem, frequently pulling a Billy Martin on unsuspecting volunteer umpires. Just as the final strike out occurred, four quick shots rung out probably about 1/4 mile away (at most), followed six more, so possibly two shooters. At any rate, we scooped up the kids and grandparents and rocketed outta there tout-de suite.
After the fact, turns out we were all rather well-armed and prepared, but no matter how many are carrying, it won't stop a stray bullet. Better safe than sorry.
Let's hope Little League leads to better outcomes for our young participants.

I hate this crap. He's doing the same thing Obama did when he did those apology tours - apologizing on the behalf of other people.
Don't apologize on the behalf of other people unless a) they're your children or b) they work for you. Otherwise it's just cheap grace. You can bet your last dollar Tim Cook doesn't include himself personally when he talks about "my generation".
Cook makes my skin crawl. First he told people it was a "sin" not to use his platform to censor people he didn't like, and now this.

While the majority of students believe that hate speech should be protected, 53 percent of college women contend it should not be protected, as well a majority of black students.
Over half of college students agree that shouting speakers down is "always" or "sometimes" acceptable. At the same time, 83 percent of college students agree that using violence to end an event is "never acceptable."

Don't miss that 17% openly admit they're fine with violence to make you shut up. Like Muslims, the numbers who approve of someone else performing violence as their proxy probably gets the numbers up to half.
53% of women and a majority - and I suspect it's an overwhelming majority - of black students believe that people who disagree with them shouldn't have freedom of speech.

IIRC the supremes ruled long ago that so-called "hate speech' was protected, however what they called "fighting words' was not. They also ruled "hate crimes" were not protected and that hate crime laws calling for extra punishment were ok. I disagreed with that.

And when will we see the DoEd back that up with a new policy regarding 'unsafe' school environments?

Security prisoners with blood on their hands receive millions of shekels worth of special food for their holidays, an expensive TV in every cell, a ping-pong table and games, workout machines, unlimited newspapers, and lavish family visits, according to official details obtained by the Zionist organization Im Tirtzu.
The details were released by the Israel Prison Service following a year-long legal battle in which Im Tirtzu's Legal Division submitted a request for the information under the Freedom of Information Law.
The request was originally denied by the Prison Service, but following a court appeal filed by Im Tirtzu attorney Yaakov Cohen, the Prison Service was forced to release the information.
According to the details, terrorists serving time in Israeli prisons receive a special meal for the Islamic holidays of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, which includes a chicken dish costing 47 shekel per prisoner. In the year 2018 alone, the special holiday dishes for terrorists cost 540,000 shekels, and from 2008-2018, the cost has exceeded 6,500,000 shekels.
In addition, every prison cell contains a 480 shekel TV, and prisoners have access to workout machines, ping-pong table, backgammon, chess, checkers, and nearly unlimited newspapers and books.
