Saturday Afternoon Chess Thread 05-18-2019

unknown 03.jpg1961 U.S. Women's Champion Lisa Lane

As always, the chess/dress pr0n thread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment.

And TheJamesMadison's movie thread will be up later this evening.

Easier Problem - White To Play (980)

Goal: White can force a mate in 3
Hint: eliminate the back-rank defender - at the appropriate time.

Chess On Display

On the way home from the PNW MoMe in Yakima last week, Mrs. Muse and I spent a few hours touring the Maryhill Museum of Art, which she has been wanting to do for a while. One of the main attractions of this museum is its collection of chess sets, which is on permanent display. Below are some photos we took with Mrs. Muse's phone. The lighting wasn't all that great and the shadows are annoying and hard to avoid, but we did the best we could:

More Challenging Problem - White To Play (966)

This is a very fun position to work through. I've heard that Garry Kasparov uses it in the chess Masterclass that he teaches (h/t David Llada).

Goal: White wins by either a quick mate or by forcing a KBN vs. K endgame
Hint: knights are very tricksy

Solutions Update

Easier Problem - To Play

20190518 - Problem 1.jpg
5rk1/1ppq4/n2p3p/p2Pp1bB/2P4N/P1N2RPb/1PQ5/6K1 w - - 0 1

1.Qg6+ Qg7

Or 1...Kh8 2.Rxf8#

2.Rxf8+ Kxf8

This sacrfice eliminates the back rank defender. And now:

3.Qe8#

More Challenging Problem - White To Play

20190518 - Problem 2.jpg
8/8/3b2K1/2B5/7k/8/5N2/7N w - - 0 1

Before I worked through this problem, I thought that two knights can checkmate is if the king is in a corner, and even then, the position can't be forced. But with the bishops still on the board, the strategic situation is completely different.

Looking at the position, I saw that if I could get the White bishop to the d8-h4 diagonal, it would be mate. Of course, this is not possible, for Black could just move his bishop along the b7-h2 diagonal and block me wherever I went. And I can't just take the Black bishop because stalemate.

So I started looking at knight moves, which is how I found:

1.Ng3!

Because I saw that if 1...Bxc5 then 2.Nf5#. Also, if 1...Bxg3 then 2.Be7#. And 1...Bc7 results in 2.Nf5#. I was surprised to see these checkmates by two knights against a king that has not been driven into a corner square. I didn't think that was possible.

So the only move that Black really has is

1...Kxg3

And this allows White to close out the game with a knight fork:

2.Ne4+ Kf3
3.Nxd6 and with correct play, White will eventually win.

Hope to see you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

there's a controversy about Epic Games, how they have their own platform which - unlike Steam - they bother to maintain. perhaps banhappily .

actually two controversies: The Outer Wilds was crowdfunded, but those devs turned around and sold it through Epic. thought is that they hadn't told their backers that. unsure that a refund policy is going to cover it. since that means the backers gave then an interest free loan. yay lawyers.

Hollywood has always been a reliable source of contributions to Democratic Party politicians and organizations, but perhaps never so more than the 2018 election cycle.

Of the more than $4 million in federal donations made by the top Hollywood executives and entertainers, 99.7 percent went to Democrats and Democratic-leaning political action committees or organizations, according to a Hollywood Reporter data review of Federal Election Commission records.

85 @25 actually two controversies: The Outer Wilds was crowdfunded, but those devs turned around and sold it through Epic. thought is that they hadn't told their backers that. unsure that a refund policy is going to cover it. since that means the backers gave then an interest free loan. yay lawyers.

------------------------

Epic's actions are not creating many fans. Their "exclusivity" deals (Epic pays the publisher of a major game, and in return the game is only available on Epic for one year) are causing lots of annoyance among players. Even worse, you have situations like the Vampire: Bloodlines sequel that went up for pre-sale on Steam... only to get pulled down when it switched to an Epic-exclusive at launch title.

I understand that Epic needs users. And since people are generally satisfied with Steam, they're not inclined to switch over to the Epic portal without some sort of inducements. But these sorts of shenanigans are just ticking players off.

90 The oceans are rising!

They are. It's the continued aftermath of the end of the Ice Age. Over 400 feet of rise so far. A continuing rise but at a slowing rate. That's certainly the long-term trend. And it's relatively trivial on the trend line.

But if you squint at some data sets for the last century, and extrapolate from variance ... We're all going to drown!

Alarmists also point to natural subsidence, exacerbated by ocean front land development, as evidence that the oceans are rising, when it's actually the land that's falling.

93 Interesting...

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints generally stays out of politics. There have been exceptions (Prop 8 here in California comes to mind), but that's not the rule.

So it's of interest when one of those exceptions occurs.

The LDS Church has released a statement that emphatically comes out against the "Equality Act" that the House of Representatives is considering right now. The reason is pretty straightforward - it removes various religious freedoms that are currently enshrined in Federal Law.

137 I was very surprised when Robert Mueller wrapped his little investigation up and issued his report. I thought he'd beat that drum and harass Trump & his associates as long as humanly possible.

Now, I'm starting to believe that Mueller wrapped it up because of John Durham. After all, it was Durham who brought down the corrupt FBI office in Boston which had knowingly sent innocent men to prison for 25 years for murders they hadn't committed.

Durham is said to have been working on this case for quite a few weeks now. He's already assembled at least one grand jury. The right questions are being asked. People in "The Resistance" are beginning to turn on each other. Now, no one wants to be associated with the Steele Dossier.

Is this why Robert Mueller shut it down? Are there pee stains in Robert Mueller's shorts? I think so.

162 >>Now, I'm starting to believe that Mueller wrapped it up because of John Durham.

According to his hometown paper, the Hartford Courant, Barr has been working on this since last summer. We also have testimony from former General Counsel of the FBI last October where he said he was under criminal investigation by Durham for leaking.

He's been investigating for quite some time.

People in "The Resistance" are beginning to turn on each other.

=========

And that is how we know that justice may be at hand. Not because the evidence is there in plain sight, not because people unambiguously broke laws, but because the guilt is beginning to show in subtle ways.

As long as Hillary was flouncing around the way she was, I never had the slightest belief that she would be caught. Every time another batch of classified emails came out, every time another lie or violation was revealed, I looked only at her demeanor to find out what the consequence would be. As always, nothing.

She's still as cool as a cucumber. It's clear she knows that if anyone swings for this, it's going to be her cohorts, not her.

Their demeanor is another story. They're all racing like the Red Queen to get out ahead of the facts.

169 Mueller might well have been told by his boss, Barr, to wrap things up, but probably only after consultations and a chance for Muller to lay out what more he had to do, to keep the special counsel office going. Remember any office like that reports to the AG, or, as for most of this one's existence, to the acting AG. Whose tenure and supervision - and especially the very decision to create the office - really merit very thorough review or investigation themselves.

Wonder if Barr also has that on his agenda.

All he has to do is say 'Read my report, it's all there."

Mueller ain't gonna testify for Nadler. Neither is anybody else, now. Nadler's game is over before it even started.

Oh FFS. The thermal coefficient of solubility of oxygen in water changes by a minuscule amount over the temperature range in question.

This is a case of people quacking who don't know doodly about science. Sure, if you boil water, you outgas it, but that's not what we're talking about. The difference in water temperature between the Arctic and the tropics is greater than the temperature difference they impute to the putative global warming.

Sheesh.

(Out of curiosity, I looked up the facts. An increase in sea water temperature from 25 C to 30 C - i.e., WAY more than the warmists postulate - decreases the molar solubility of oxygen by 8%. Pfff.

But wouldn't warming oceans hold less CO2, and make a contribution to the increase of CO2 in the atmosphere.

If so, then more CO2 in the air is a result of warming from other causes, and not itself a significant cause.

Quick math show that if all the CO2 in the air were frozen into dry ice, it's only be an inch crust on the oceans. So this is trace effect, but one that alarmists have made their centerpiece.

for a serious answer. I am not a plane guy but what i think one could lump smaller, air to ground "bombers" as attack aircraft. The attack jets were smaller jets that dropped bombs and fired rockets but did not look anything like tactical or strategic bombers. For reference check out planes/jets that start with an A instead of an F. I am not jsut talking ww2 but up to the present day.

262 @224 Those are always referred to with their descriptor. Mostly 'dive' and they were for windows of opportunity.
--------------------

They weren't for "windows of opportunity". They were designed to carry out a style of bombing - i.e. dive bomber, or torpedo bomber. What you're most likely referring to with the word "bomber" is something that is more precisely described as a "level bomber". It's a plane that flies at a steady level or elevation, and drops bombs from there. Dropping bombs in this fashion tends to have accuracy issues, so it tended to work better with larger planes, which could carry sophisticated bomb sights that made it more likely that the bombs would land on target. Additionally, carrying a larger payload of bombs (which you can do with a bigger plane) made it more likely that that target would actually get hit, instead of having nothing but near-misses.

Level bombers were further sub-divided into various classes, such as "heavy" or "strategic" bombers, etc...

Dive bombers were smaller planes. Planes of this size tended not to carry sophisticated bomb sights. Instead, the pilot was expected to "aim" the bomb by pointing his plane toward the target on the ground or water, and releasing the bomb while in this dive. The combination of the pilot's steep dive (putting him nearly over the target for an extended period of time), low horizontal velocity (since most of the pilot's speed is vertical), and the high speed of the release, meant that the bomb had a decent chance of hitting close to where the pilot had intended.

Torpedo bombers are the other "well-known" single-engine bomber. These are level bombers. But unlike other level bombers, they're designed to carry specialized ordinance for use against ships. To the best of my knowledge, there's no reason why a torpedo bomber couldn't carry a regular bomb. But the accuracy against most targets would be horrible due to the lack of appropriate bombsights on such a plane (you don't need much in the way of targeting assistance when you're launching torpedoes against very large ships).

268 At the start of WWII, all the airplanes had been designed in the 1930s before the war. Most nations had two-engine "medium" bombers, but there were few four-engine "heavy" bombers. The B-17 existed at the start of the war, and maybe the British Lancaster. With few exceptions, the Germans and Japanese didn't field heavy bombers.

I suppose a single-engine plane designed to drop bombs would have been called a "light" bomber. Practically all carrier planes were single-engine. The Doolittle Raid launching medium bombers from a carrier was pretty much unprecedented at the time.

Sure. But again, a temperature difference of a few degrees is not going to make a huge difference in the solubility of any gas.

The difference in the absolute amount might be huge, but has to be compared with the amount already of the gas already in the atmosphere, i.e., expressed as a percentage, because there's probably not a person in a million to whom an absolute figure would be meaningful. Suppose the amount of CO2 in the air increased by, say, 100 million tons (made up number). Is that a lot? A little? What? You'd have to do extensive calculations to figure out which it was.

Nope.

Outside of carpet bombing, the B-17 was extremely ineffective against non-industrial targets. There were attempts to use them both to attack enemy ground troops, and against enemy ships. But the results were very poor.

The exception to that was carpet bombing, which essentially consisted of saturating a chunk of ground with a ridiculous number of bombs dropped by waves of heavy bombers. But only the US had the manufacturing capability to do something like that on a consistent basis, as it used up a very large number of bombs. The results were impressive. But so was the cost in materials.

Wrong Blitz. I answered as if you meant Blitzkrieg. But what you meant was the London Blitz.

Probably not enough to matter. Germany couldn't sustain it for long enough. The German raids were untargeted, as were the British raids that happened during the war. Only the US launched large precision raids, and people still debate just how useful those were.

So if Germany had used large numbers of four-engine bombers, they probably still wouldn't have brought Great Britain to its knees.

Hitler already had more than the EU does today.
Tojo had (almost and would have) had China.

321 @294 They never ask the second question regarding relative magnitudes.

-----------------

Back during the '80s, the State of California sprayed malathion from helicopters in an attempt to halt infestations of a particular invasive fruit fly. The locals tended not to like this activity. So when news got out about a report that found that malathion causes cancer, Los Angeles immediately jumped on it and used it to try and get a court order to have the spraying stopped as a health hazard.

Unfortunately, apparently no one in LA bothered to check the details first. Apparently the risk of cancer from malathion was so low that ordinary common dirt was more of a hazard than the insecticide.

Possibly. The Battle of Britain was a close run thing but even if the Nazis had achieved air superiority over Britain, they would have still had to pull a William the Conqueror and they really didn't have the ships or craft to do it.

328 102 The old-style plane print for the dress is very nice fabric, but they call it a "bomber airplane print". Has anyone pedantically pointed out to the "History Club" that there is no way those single engine prop jobs they've got there would be called "bombers"??? Ok the fact that they're all about to run into each other, I'll just let that go.
Posted by: Tom Servo at May 18, 2019 06:16 PM (V2Yro)

The only way they could be bombers is if they were carrier aircraft. VT/VB/VS were all single engine bombers.

329 @314 Thanks. I imagine an effect of carpet bombing was to create firestorms.

Also, am I right that the Hiroshima bombing was like lighting a match to all those wooden buildings and homes.

-------------------

Carpet bombing was used to flatten whatever was underneath it. Panzer Division Lehr had the unfortunate experience of being underneath the first carpet bombing. He reported seeing tanks flipped over, and men suffering from complete breakdowns due to the shock.

Incendiaries weren't used, to the best of my knowledge.

The bomb at Hiroshima essentially caused a massive blast wave. Anything that was close enough and that didn't get knocked over likely caught fire from the heat. But the results likely weren't conducive to setting the entire city on fire. There are enough reports from people who survived the bombings that we have a rough idea of how it worked. If you were outside the immediate blast, and dove behind or into something that could protect you from the blast wave then you'd likely survive the immediate effects (one man apparently survived BOTH Hiroshima and Nagasaki; he warned his wife after the first one, and she survived the second one by jumping into a ditch when she saw the initial flash).

And we really didn't need the atomic bombs to set Japanese cities on fire. We'd been doing that for quite a while using B-29s with incendiary bombs.

Kate doesn't have the aura that mesmerized people the way Diana did, but she is a lovely lady and had a great sense of fashion. Melania, of course, is a total class act, and is a lot more pleasing than her predecessor, Lady Armpits.

Who do you most want to see sent to prison? I want that corrupt, smug prick Peter Strzok behind bars. I also badly want to see Brennan, Clapper, Comey, Rice, McCabe, and Bruce and Nellie Ohr. Lord, how I would love to see Nellie Ohr forced to explain who she was in communication with on her ham radio....

If you believe Rice can go, you must believe that Samantha Power can go. Did someone forge those unmasking requests or not? She needs to have those things thrust under her face on the witness stand and asked whether it's her signature or not.

Going back to the Hillary investigation, I want to at least see Cheryl Mills, Huma, and Heather Samuelson peeing their pants if not prosecuted.

338 Basic understanding of basic calculus principles helps.
Posted by: Ignoramus at May 18, 2019 07:46 PM (1UZdv)

It does, a bit, but more important is understanding relative magnitudes in physics and chemistry. One problem is that we might teach, say, NMR spectrometry one week, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy then next, without giving any impression of the relative energies involved. This especially true because in NMR we'd typically talk about ppm shifts, and never talk about absolute magnitudes of energy (typically ~ 0.001 cm-1 for NMR). For XPS, we'd talk about keV, and never point out that the two differ in energy by over 20 orders of magnitude. The two techniques are usually presented as though they're pretty much of a muchness.

THAT is the problem.

Grrr. See also horse-faced Meryl Streep and Alar. The stupid bitch saw the tox data that said that Alar caused cancer at something like an incidence of 0.001 +- 0.1 per 100,000. So she multiplied the former figure by the population of the US, and then testified before Congress that Alar causes 0.001 X 300 million X 10^-5 cancers per year, ignoring the fact that the error limits on that number were larger than the number itself. So in fact Alar was as likely to be beneficial as toxic, based on those data, i.e., no statistically significant effect.

A classic case of a little knowledge - or in her case, a boatload of ignorance - being a dangerous thing.
