C'alra made a mistake; she readily admits that. But she had also been failed, time and time again, by flawed systems that are weighted against black girls.

She was written off as angry when she was simply trying to learn, hampered by teachers who were swift to punish, but not to listen. She was treated as an adult when she was still a child overwhelmed by the legal system.

76 I was thinking as I was driving in to work today about the twin pressures on corporate issues in the legal world, you could say that they are Equal but Opposite.

One is Stalinist, basically, and this is the view that Corporations have no rights whatsoever, and exist only upon the sufferance of the Govm't, and are always subject at all times to the whims of the government, whatever those may be. This could also be correctly labeled as the heart of any Fascist system, where Business is allowed to exist, but only as an extension of Govm't, and tasked with carrying out Govm't mandates. The "Citizens United" critics take this view.

But on the other hand, we also face the Corporatist View which is being pushed, and this could be stated as, not only to Corporations have rights and powers of their own, they also have rights and powers to a far greater extent than any private citizen has, due mainly to their size, influence, and immense wealth. This is the view that all of today's Tech Giants (including Apple) are pushing.

Our constant burden is to find a way forward that is fair to actual People, one which finds a path in between this Scylla and Charybdis if dangerous policies.

90 I DID see 'Detective Pikachu' last night. Because I'm a sucker and because of Ryan Reynolds snark.

It was actually...ok. Not great but it didn't suck and that's a minor miracle.

Sorta a cross between 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit', a Hayo Miyazaki film and Blade Runner.

Justice Smith, no relation to Will Smith surprisingly, did a fine job. The plot was simple but not terrible, though it does do that annoying thing where you are given incomplete information, dribbled out over time, rather than one revelation leading to another. But that's a quibble.

The Pokemon themselves...well, it's on the title. They're kinda stupid and cartoony but you have to accept it's that universe going into it.

It actually had character development and they main character isn't a teenager, though he 'acts young' at times. I mean...any 21 year old better know how to hit on girls. Unless he's a late bloomer like I was.

Property Tax is one of the oldest taxes there is, dating back at least to William the Conqueror and his Domesday Book of 1086. (one of the very first things he did after he consolidated control)

More recently, in American history, it dates back to the times when only Landowners were allowed to vote.

Well, 1. Considering they aren't working anymore and 2. the biggest part of prperty tax is schools and they haven't had kids in school for thirty years, the school districts have been making free bank off their backs for decades.

I tentatively support property tax only for basic services to the
neighborhoods (streets, lights, sewer, drainage). It makes sense you
pay for that stuff, and paying through property tax is a reasonable
method. But it should be loowww to make sure the payment is ONLY for
that.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at May 14, 2019 12:40 PM (39g3+)
In NH, we have no income tax, and no sales tax. There is a tax on hotels, and prepared meals. All municipal services end up being funded via property taxes. Schools receive very little funding from the state, so it is the property owners who shoulder the burden. With the big rise in property values, excessive spending by the schools -- my taxes are going up at least $1000 this year.

. . .

Have a look at the Lower Quarter, the parts beyond Jackson Square -- Royal Street, Chartres, Dauphine -- the areas where people actually live (and where I grew up and went to school, as it happens). It's much less of a theme park than the first seven blocks of Bourbon or Royal.

Magazine Street, Maple Street between Broadway and Carrollton, Oak Street beyond Carrollton, all have interesting shops and restaurants. Magazine has gotten awfully trendy and expensive, but the other two aren't bad.

114 trivia - I always thought the Domesday Book, done by William the Conqueror's administrators, was one of the more clever (albeit oppressive) methods every used to gain control over a new land. William sent his accountants through the entire land, recording everything that stood, and listing the names of the owners so they could be taxed. (and it's one of the great historical documents of the medieval period, for that reason) So, what if someone didn't want to claim ownership of a certain piece of land, or building, so that they didn't have to pay taxes to the new King? Well, that was just fine with William, he didn't mind at all - anything that wasn't claimed automatically became the Property of the Crown, thank you very much, down to the last cow.

Slick way to get people to report on themselves.

also ask your bartender, after you have tipped her well, where she and her friends go to drink after hours. It changes often.
