HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Police say two people from the Birmingham area are facing charges for a Thursday evening robbery attempt that left one of them shot. Deangelo Lindsay, 19, and Precious Howard, 22, were both charged with first-degree robbery for the shooting that happened at the Publix on Old Monrovia Road just before 6 p.m. Huntsville police said a mother and her son were talking in the store's parking lot when Lindsay and Howard parked behind them, walked up with handguns and demanded money and personal items. The son pulled out a gun and shot Lindsay, police said, and he fell to the ground. He then grabbed Lindsay's gun and threw it in his vehicle.

I haven't really got an opinion on St. Louis, either. I drove around it to visit a friend who was doing research at WUSTL but that's about it. Oh, the construction signs said something about injuring/killing a road worker is $5000 and ten years, but here it's $15,000 and 5 years. Maybe it was the other way around.
I guess the moral of the story is if you really want to injure or kill a road worker and you have a lot of free time but not much money, it pays to shop around.

Gotta say, I'm not a fan of t-ravs. When I was an intern in the Missouri House years ago, I often got my meals from hors d'oeuvres at official functions, which included a lot of t-ravs; either I got burned out on them or never liked them that much to begin with. I forget which.

The first time I got a courtesy car when my car was at the dealer for repairs, I was nonplussed when all the doors unlocked when I put it in park.
I thought, "Wait! What if I park in a sketchy neighborhood??!!"
I had to read the manual to find out how to program the door locks to behave like I wanted them to.

There is a way to stop the auto door lock. Read the manual for how. I did. ISTR it involved multiple locking and unlocking, but your car may be different.

Ford does it because they enjoy being assholes and to squeeze out another .02 mpg claim for the fleet ... though their stated mileage numbers are such bullshit it isn't even funny. I live in a semi-rural area (sub-suburb, I would call it - lots of 45 mph roads) and I drive with a pretty light foot and I don't even get what they claim the city mileage is. I can't imagine how shitty my mileage would be in the city starting and stopping every 2 blocks (and with that annoying start-stop crap going crazy at the same time!).

Since our holidays/observances follow the format of evening-morning-evening, we lit our candle and prayed our Kaddish earlier tonight (even though Joyce actually died on the 16th).
It's difficult to believe that a year has, in fact, passed: it is at once too fast, and too long.
I really want to thank The Horde for all our prayers, kind words and the strength you gave me during the last year and a half of her life.
Her memory *is* a blessing.

Got a charter trip for Striped Bass next week as a birthday present from older daughter.
We went last year and it was a blast. Managed to reserve the same captain, so I'm really looking forward to this.
The rest of the week (fishing is Monday) is set for getting the Toy out of storage. Weather kinda put the brakes on that, we actually had the threat of snow a few times.

At a stop. I just always left a full stop in second gear. Sometimes I'd get lazy and go straight from second to fourth gear. This was in an ancient VW Beetle.

I put together a thumb drive of every song I like to hear on the road... I'm now up to over 1200 songs.
Anyway I found when I play 'em in the car, the volume is crazy. One song is too loud, another I can barely hear.
So now I'm going through 50 of them a day on Audacity, amplifying them, and then compressing them.
So far it seems to be working. But I still have 700 songs to go. :-P

Granny gear in the "2-ton" trucks we've used wasn't synchronized well with 2nd. Unloaded you'd start off in 2nd. It absolutely had to be stopped to shift into 1st.
Problem was when (over)loaded, starting on a hill, the thing would tend to stop before you could get it into 2nd. You had to practice with that.
I told Miley that's she going to learn how to drive one of those trucks.

I would leave my manual in gear, but I would always put the parking brake on, too. Nowadays, I almost never use the parking brake with automatics. Haven't used it for years.

No, I leave it in neutral and use the parking brake.
But then again, I live in a pretty flat area. If I had to park on a hill, I'd probably leave it in gear plus use the parking brake.

At work (at the site I'm usually at), I stop, shut it off, shift into first, let the clutch out, then pull the parking brake. But only because it's parked on an uphill slope. On flat pavement, I just use the parking brake and keep it in neutral. It's not rational, it just feels like eventually I'm going to warp the disc or the calipers or something if I don't because the parking brake only actuates the rear brakes, so on a slope, it's got all the weight on the rear brakes all day.

If it is level or pointed downhill, put it in reverse.
If it is pointed uphill, put it in first.
Always turn the wheels into the curb.

Not to be a contrarian, but the one and only time that I had a roll away with a stick, I had left it in gear and had not set the parking brake. Usually I park it both in gear and with the parking brake set.

I always leave it in gear and put the brake on. And if it will tend to roll forward, I put it in reverse. This is so rolling tends to turn the engine backwards. It won't run that way.
With a gas engine, you've got ignition and with modern engines, electronically controlled fuel injectors, so it wouldn't matter.
With diesel tractors (old school, not electrical controls), an engine could start.
That happened to my father years ago. It didn't roll off, but the solenoid shorted, cranking it. He had left in gear and it started right up and crashed into a building. And then caught fire due to heat of the heavy starting current shorting through something.

They make cars now, Lexus and perhaps others, that, get this, Hold the car still when you stop and let off the brake pedal.
So if you're in traffic you don't have to sit there with your foot on the brake pedal. Neat.

I never like to just use Park on a significant slope. On flat ground, I will, but if there's any slope, I put the brake on.
The Crown Vic with rear disc brakes used a tiny little drum and shoes for the parking brake.
On a slope, I've seen some almost get stuck in park because of the pressure on the lock, which is why I don't like to do it.

The Arch
The Arch is cool, but the ride up and back down was somewhat claustrophobic. I wouldn't have missed it for the world, as my friends and I were in town to witness our Michigan Tech Huskies win the NCAA Frozen Four back in '75, the last time they accomplished that. They were runners up in '74 and '76. The Minnesota Golden Gophers were their opponents during all three championship games.

That happened before I was born, IIRC. It was almost a 3-stooges production. My father got excited when he saw that happening. He grabbed a fire extinguisher, and promptly sprayed himself in the face with it. He had the nozzle pointed backwards.

That happened to my father years ago. It didn't roll off, but the solenoid shorted, cranking it. He had left in gear and it started right up and crashed into a building. And then caught fire due to heat of the heavy starting current shorting through something.

I'm probably as much an expert on this topic as any so...
Crime here is bad, but not as bad as they make it sound. Rates are based on city population, which is dwindling, but still a high concentration, because the geography is so small.
St. Louis County envelopes the city, and has about a million residents, to the city's 300 thousand, give or take. County crimes rates are much less. City and County are completely separate governmental entities... for now. The crooks were about to change that, but then the County Exec and a bunch of his pals were caught with their hands in the cookie jar. The County Exec has pled guilty to federal crimes, and since he's like the Mayor, that's a big f'ing deal.
Anyhoo, I've had it with this place. Nothing I can recommend about it. Sure, there's the toasted ravioli, the Cardinals (and yeah the hockey team is still in it, but I don't care). Traffic is terrible (everyone crams into the city, from wherever you are in the county, and nobody here knows how to drive). Race relations are genuinely worse here than almost anywhere else. I don't know why, honestly. The weather stinks, right now we're dealing with floods... again.
I'm about gone. Seriously. Been here my whole life, except when I was in the military. It's time to go elsewhere, and I'm working on it. Final plan to be implemented in mere weeks. I have family here, friends. They can come visit me. I'm out.
Anyhoo anyhoo, since no one asked me, I guess this is longer than it should have been. Sorry bout that.

I drove a log truck for a summer. The first rule for driving was *never* use the clutch for any shifting except to get into 1st. Using the clutch opened the chance for the truck to get away from you going down hill.

After that incident, my father got in the habit of the leaving the fuel shut-off control pulled out. I never liked that. On John Deeres, it was spring loaded, so it would pop back in once you shut the engine off.
Me, I just put them in neutral and apply the parking brake/transmission local mechanism.
I reminded him of this the other day. He's 91 now. He'd left the stop control out on the big 8700, and I needed to move it. It wouldn't hit a lick.
Turned out the fuel/throttle "rack" in the injector pump had stuck in the shut off position. I had to open up the cover and free it up to get it to start.
I said, "See!" He said, well, you should have anticipated that and done something about a long time ago.

Yeah, looked it up. Anton Yelchin. Fiat Chrysler had a recall on 2015 Grand Cherokees, but I don't know if that was the catalyst. It had to do with confusion over whether it was in park or not. I've never driven one, so I can't say.

The fuel shut off control has caused some laughs with people who have no experience with that. An uncle of mine borrowed one of the little tractors and couldn't figure out how to turn it off. The ignition switch wouldn't do anything (there is no spark ignition).
He let it sit there and run for nearly an hour before he broke down and called my father for help. Dad just went up, pulled the stop out and killed it. He then got back in his truck and went home without saying a word. The uncle never said another word about it, either.

Our daughter, a millennial, bought herself a '90s Ford Ranger with manual transmission. To all her "best buddies" who ask to borrow it, she replies, "Sure, can you drive a stick?"

Is it nice? I know it makes the most murders per capita city list quite often, so I always assumed it was a POS.
Plus, growing up I thought it must be full of morons if they couldn't figure out a different name for the football team and baseball team. Also, a cardinal is probably the weakest NFL mascot.
Even a Cleveland Brown pile of sh*t is scary than a cardinal.

Hmmm, food... people talk about The Hill, and if you like Italian, you can't go wrong anywhere around there. If you're around Wash U, you are near enough to it. Or Central West End, which has some nice places. U City Loop, all within reach, by car. Don't try to walk anywhere. Just don't.

My baby sister's class (2003) was the last in the district to go through driver's training at school. Everyone after had to go to Sears or whatever. Now, that's just an anecdote from one school district, but it doesn't seem to be something schools do any more. Maybe that's got something to do with it.

There's a remarkable number on "Live PD" that don't have a license either. But, the problem is, that they are still behind the wheel of a car...
And I'm not kidding. I'd say that at least 60 to 70 percent of the people they pull over do not have a valid license, or insurance.

I'm going to go against my Southern heritage and state a blasphemy: Not everything needs to be fried. A brown butter sauce with sage over (boiled) gorgonzola raviolis with some chopped walnuts on top. Frying not necessary.
I've had fried raviolis (but not from St. Louis, so have a go at that). I thought they were meh. As a teen, I probably would have loved fried raviolis. But as adult, not so much.

IIRC, in the old days, diesel trucks used a solenoid for the fuel shut off on the pump. It was normally shut off, and turning the ignition on would energize it and open the fuel. Thus it would turn off by the switch.
Modern diesels used a variety of fancier injection equipment, computer controlled. Some of them, IIRC, use a pressurized rail system, similar to the gas engine injection. It's higher pressure, but no the full 2000psi or higher direct injection pressure.
The injectors are fed off the rail and have a solenoid powered plunger that fires and gives the final high pressure shot. The computer controls that precisely.
And that brings up another funny thing with those who had no experience with diesel and old school fuel injection. If you ran it out of fuel or otherwise got air in the system, it wouldn't work, and would have to be bled.
My father let a buddy borrow one of the smaller tractors one time, and he promptly ran it out of fuel (Dad told him to check it, but he didn't). Well he goes and gets some diesel fuel and puts it in.
He ran the battery down cranking it trying to get it to start. And running the pump dry, which is not too good.
I had to go over there and show him how it was done. Now, first we open up the bleed screw on the filter and let it fill up until it runs out. Now, we wait until the air bubbles are gone and the fuel is flowing smooth.
Now, we bleed the pump manifold. We open up this little screw here, and let all the air bubbles out. Now, we've got the pump inlet manifold flooded.
And it still won't start because we've got air in the high pressure lines, and all it will do is compress without letting the pressure get high enough to open the injector nozzles.
So, we have to crack the lines to every cylinder, crank it until fuel spurts out, then close them. And it may still run a little rough, skipping a bit until we get every last bubble of air out of the system.
"That's ridiculous!", he exclaimed. "That's why we don't want to run them out of fuel", I replied.

Toasted raviolis don't have cheese in them... at least they shouldn't. Some probably do, which is disgusting. The filling is a meat mixture. Done right, it's to die for. The grated cheese on top is almost entirely for show. Doesn't really add much to the experience.

There is Seattle, and the rest of the state. Seattle used to be blue collar when I was a kid. Now it is closer to Communist China. With lots of freshly imported Chinese. Like tens of thousands of them. And a surprising number of them kinda speak Engrish. And they pay out-of-state tuition at the Komunity Korrage, as well as the U of Wash. (triple in-state rates)
Most of them are the lucky ones for getting out, and they are generally aware of that. Many Americans don't know that, for the measly sum of $500,000 cash investment into a business, and a promise to invest that much again at a later date (a real estate investment trust works ok), each Chinese family member gets a Green Card and a smile. So for just $2 million, Ma, Pa, and the two kids are moving into the new condo down the street.
Until a crackdown by Xi last year, it was like the Alaska Gold Rush around here.
You can tell how long they have been here by how close they are to correctly pronouncing words with "L" and "R" in them. Not kidding.
And the multi-generational Chinese, who are second or third generation Americans, mostly live on the Eastside in a suburb of Bellevue, Factoria.
They sound and act as American as anyone, because, well, they are.

Yes, St. Louis traffic sucks, that started with the casinos. When driving to my mothers we take 370, to 270, to bake to 70. Sometimes we skip St. Louis and go the Hannible route.

Definitely take in the Arch. The new museum they remodeled is great. I will be volunteering there this summer. The zoo is great (especially since it does not have an entry fee). Go to Anheuser Busch for the brewery tour. The Art Museum is one of the top in the country (and the world). If you were here during the summer, the Muny is a must.
As far as places to eat...McGurks in Soulard, Cunettos on the Hill, Blueberry Hill in U City (where Chuck Berry would stop and play), The Fox and the Hound close to Wash U (if you like drinking yards of beer), and Ted Drewes frozen custard.
Lots more recommendations, but you only have a weekend (I assume)...

Just one small example today, non life threatening.
I had to go deposit a third party check at the bank and get some things at the drugstore. I completely forgot about the bank and stopped at the drug store, which is about 5 miles away. I did my shopping and got in my car. When I started it up, I got a message from my car that it and my phone were connected via Bluetooth. I was looking for my phone when it struck me...... I had put my phone, my deposit slip and the check on the roof of the car before leaving home, as I had to move a garbage can, and left them there. I jumped out and there was my phone and the deposit slip still on the roof. The check was missing.
I drove home in a panic (had a half gallon of ice cream in the trunk), confessed to my wife and told her to call the check writer. I jumped back in the car, and with little hope, retraced my route to the drug store looking for the check. I found it laying in the middle of the drug store parking lot with a tire track on it.
Hope I never run out.

I drove tractors when my legs got long enough to reach the pedals properly. Of course, I was well supervised by my father there at first.
And I drove trucks and stuff around the fields well before the official 15 years or whatever the beginner's permit age was at the time.
I got my license at 16, and didn't bother with the beginner's permit shit. Of course, I flunked the driver's test the first time around. I didn't put both hands on the wheel, and the damned Buford T. didn't like something else I was doing. I turned too soon on a left IIRC, "cutting corners" I believe Buford said.
Pissed me off. I passed it the second time, but that was a different Buford T.

Good practice to leave a manual transmission in reverse when parking, to back up the parking brake. Reverse normally offers a bit more resistance to rolling than does first gear, and should you have a car with overdrive, first gear offers zero resistance to rolling forward if the overdrive handle is pushed in. Reverse locks out the overdrive, obviating that issue.

You used to have to curb your tires, too, to pass the driving test. If parking on a hill with a curb, turn the wheel so the front tire will roll up to the curb and (hopefully) stop if the car starts to roll downhill. So, wheels cramped to the right on a downgrade, and to the left on an upgrade. If no curb exists, turn the wheels so the car will roll away from the road, if it should roll. So wheels to the right, be it up hill or down.

Little-known fact: Ford offered a 4-speed column-shift transmission in their Falcon Econoline van. Transmission was called "Dagenham" and made in that city in England. Transmission was quite stout; the same could not be said for the column shift linkage. I had one, and liked it right well.

This one looked interesting, even though crew cab...until I looked at the interior pictures. In all the specs, it says 'Manual Transmission', but the pictures tell a different story.

Look at the email header information and see if it actually originated from Twatter. Also, look at the links in the email and see what the URL is and make sure it's actually Twatter.

IMVHO that's the wrong perspective. Democrats will get behind whomever their candidate is. There are a lot of old time Democrats who still believe the party isn't radical that have sat on the sidelines. If you get the progressive crowd who voted for Hillary to the polls, they somehow win Blue Collar voters (who they've screwed and Trump has helped), then pull in those old time Democrats who will vote for the almost 80 year old Biden because, nostalgia!, they win.
A tall order in this economy, but entirely possible.

Disagree - I don't like Biden, but a lot of LIV's do. When one is running a campaign, military or political, it's very dangerous to underestimate your enemies, because that leads to overconfidence and bad decisions. Hillary underestimated Trump, and she paid for that mistake.
Over the next 18 months, Trump's task is to intentionally and completely destroy Biden's likability with a majority of voters. It's not going to be easy, but it can be done.
