Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | FaceBook Co-Founder: It's Time to Break Up FaceBook. American Culture Cannot Have a Monopolistic Censor.Chris Hughes, the Harvard roommate of and co-founder of Facebook with Mark Zuckerberg, writes in a piece for the New York Times that "it is time to break up Facebook." "America was built on the idea that power should not be concentrated in any one person, because we are all fallible," writes Hughes. "That's why the founders created a system of checks and balances." Hughes explains that because Zuckerberg has a 60 percent control of Facebook’s voting shares, "Mark alone can decide how to configure Facebook's algorithms to determine what people see in their News Feeds, what privacy settings they can use and even which messages get delivered."He also calls for an agency to regulate social media, with an emphasis on holding them to account regarding privacy. Immediately, every social media company should be given a free choice to choose to be a publisher or a public utility. If needed, they can spin off companies in order to separate the powers. If they choose to be a publisher, they will have to live under the body of law for publishers. If they choose to be a public utility, they will have to live under the body of law for public utilities. I have never quite understood the FacePlant phenomenon. When you think of it, it's nothing but a glorified chat room. At least that was my experience. I guess I also don't grok how something that is essentially an intangible can be worth so much, monetarily. And I'm not a Luddite. I've been intimately involved in information technology since the magnetic tape and punch card days. That makes me a dinosaur but not a Luddite.

Fundamentals of a not-libertarian position I've come to. If the Constitution says government can't do a thing, and an entity possesses through craft or seizure the authority to do that thing, its position to do so is not only wrong but an abrogation of government.
That government is best which governs least, but a corollary is that nobody not the government gets to "govern" more either, and anything which de facto gives a company like Facebook a government-issued authority within law to, say, search and seize people not its customers, is obviously not something we should permit. " 2 We had three like minded censors for 40 years.
Why is now different? Posted by: golfman at May 10, 2019 05:03 PM (OE84+)" Real answer? Three-fold; for most of that time period, the Soviets as an external threat put a damper on their moonbattery, or at least kept it to a slow burn. And part of that slow burn was the dismantling of our education system. Now our moonbats are exceptionally educationally challenged, and the only external threat they profess to care about is one they're shrilly linking to their domestic opponents. Lastly, censorship aside, FB is a pretty damn big threat simply for the reach of their data collection and their near-total lack of ethics. We're talking about a company that was selling access to people's private photo uploads to third parties so you could search for, and view, private bikini pics by username, for fuck's sake. The thing that struck me right away about social media is the stupidity of its exclusivity.
Why can't you be on Facebook, and have people from LinkedIn, MySpace or Twitter appear and comment? It would be like at the very start of email they told you that, if you were on yahoo, you can only get email from other yahoo users. That NEVER would have taken hold. So how did social media take hold? Posted by: RKae at May 10, 2019 06:09 PM (vP0jg) 295

Yeah, IG report in review makes sense, given timing. Whatever. Presumably this report won't molest the canine, as the Clinton Espionage Act report did. That remains a yuuuge stain on DOJ, a laughable white-wash. Which will be even more dramatically obvious when the same cast of characters is presumably charbroiled for their misconduct on the new report - misconduct by the same people on behalf of the same objectives/cause ..... but, one assumes, magically lacking in "defensible investigative judgements".

All they have to do is properly infer that you exist - then there is a long list of devices that can phone home about you. Let's say you have never used FB in your entire life and do nothing but carry a smartphone that you don't even turn on, let alone install apps on. Let's say your partner also has never used FB, but engages in regular smartphone usage. They installed one of hundreds of apps on their phone made by a company that has data sharing agreements with FB; not even some fly by night outfit, we're talking major stuff like MSM outlets and whatnot. That app nabs their address book, and the partner's data gets sent to FB. Boom. There is a file on them now, if there was not before. Now you get established as their cohabitant based on your address book entry and correlating the geolocation of your phone - which is done even with the phone powered off. Now you get a file on you as well. Now FB knows who you are, where you live, and where you go, and they're getting that data from multiple sources. 161 Look, Facebook can do what it wants because it's a private company.
Don't like it, Jesus and Conservative Principles sez to build your own platform. ****************************** Yeah, that's it: it's a private company and a monopoly, with a majority ownership and control by ONE guy. NO harm in that --ask John J. Rockefeller, Cornelius Vanderbilt, and the other Robber Barons. Oh wait---the government broke them up because they had a distorting effect on the economy, and had built up all sorts of barriers to entry by competitors. Just as Zuck is asking to be regulated ---so as to keep competitors out. So, by gum, your "build your own platform" is straight out of the 19th century!! Huzzah!! Given its deep corruption, you gotta be asking yourself how many Congresscritters has Zuck already paid off so that he feels secure that nothing will happen to him or his censorious and privacy-invading enterprise.
IOW how many Nadlers and the like have sidled up to him and said, "Nice little monopoly you got here; I'd hate to see anything happen to it". (and you can substitute a lot of GOP types for Nadler, and still be right) Posted by: Noam Sayen at May 10, 2019 07:21 PM (WJcbb) 350
Facebook has "pretended" to be an open platform, but by censoring some posts, they've in effect become an editorial board. I'm wondering if they can be pressured to go back to an open forum if there are libel lawsuits directly against facebook, based on the posts they ALLOW. Since they use editorial judgment, they cannot use the "public forum" defense.
