Posted by: TheJamesMadison, Read Some Movie Thoughts at April 26, 2019 09:17 AM (ANN96)

I think that 2020 was Bernie's campaign to lose - and he has done so. Bernie was the #2 finisher in 2016 primary - he stuck it out to the end, and had his own energized following. I never thought he could beat Hillary, with the way the election was structured (I won't use the word "rigged" but it was). But he was a lot more competitive against her than one would expect an old weird guy who wasn't even a member of the Democrat party before he ran should have been. And he is winning the money primary right now - I expect that to change.

Biden hasn't run for President since 2008 - he has to rebuild a national machine. Sure, he can lean on the Obama machine, but that has already been picked apart by the large field that came before him. Biden was never that popular with Dems - he dropped out after finishing 5th in Iowa - behind BILL RICHARDSON.

Yeah, Biden was VP for 8 years under Obama, which gives him name recognition (which is valuable) but he still isn't all that popular - not even with Obama! His decision to begin his campaign as some sort of reaction to "Charlottesville" won't play, and no way he can avoid the siren call of the Leftist stuff. Think Biden will take a bold stand and say that we shouldn't let prisoners vote? Or that we shouldn't forgive all those student loans? Or we shouldn't pay reparations for slavery? Biden is not bold - he is not bold enough to be "moderate."

If I'm away from the computer for a couple of minutes and come back, more often than not, the computer decides that's a good time to go blue screen of death and reboot.

Yesterday, I realized I'd left unsaved text in Notepad and raced back to the computer, only to have it reboot just as I was about to touch the keyboard.

It's just ridiculous. Every single media source, including Fox News, just labels the guy "far right."

And the wikipedia on him (in English) is hilariously slanted.

I follow South American politics a little (I don't speak Spanish or Portuguese, but I use google translate), so I feel like I probably know more about it then 99% of the reporters who write about politics in our southern neighbors countries.

But shouldn't we LIKE a president in Brazil who leads chants of "USA" at some of his rallies, quotes Winston Churchill, wants to join NATO, and trade more extensively with the US?

...Or is the Venezuelan model really that much more preferable, where people can barely survive, and the entire country has been mortgaged to China?

I think the fact that he's the only one playing well with the black electorate within the party is a serious strength that isn't going to vanish easily. It's not just name recognition because of his time as VP, it's also the fact that he's more intimately tied to the first black president than anyone else (currently) running.

If he manages a win in South Carolina while at least placing well in Iowa or New Hampshire, he'll be in good position to keep going, whittle down the rest of the field, and use his name recognition to become the sole choice for cultural Democrats who don't like identity politics.

However, your point on his cowardice in the face of leftist ire is duly noted. It's probably going to be what trips him up.

Jill Stein, actual Russian stooge, is not running this year, which makes the potential for a Green Party candidate who could appeal to spurned voters on the Left. 99 I enjoy Ilya Repin's paintings for the most part. Many are beautifully detailed utilizing a combination of soft and jewel-like color.

This portrait is quite simple in composition and subdued colors. It doesn't do much for me except for the eyes and skin tones, which are riviting. Perhaps a more attractive model would have helped.

100 It's really amazing what a bit of selective focus can do for a painting. So much of this piece is quick color and form work, and then there's the detail in the face and the embroidery that just sucks you in. Good stuff.

Wiki:

One contemporary notes, "an intense worship of Bacchus was considered to be almost obligatory for a writer of that period. It was a showing off, a 'pose,' for the best people of the [eighteen-]sixties." Another writes, "Talented people in Russia who love the simple folk cannot but drink."[30] Mussorgsky spent day and night in a Saint Petersburg tavern of low repute, the Maly Yaroslavets, accompanied by other bohemian dropouts. He and his fellow drinkers idealized their alcoholism, perhaps seeing it as ethical and aesthetic opposition. This bravado, however, led to little more than isolation and eventual self-destruction

138 from Nolte over at Breitbart in reviewing Avengers: Endgame, coupled with Ace's comments in the sidebar recently about Brie Larson...

One thing I noticed that was interesting...

Maybe because she's so new or maybe because she's portrayed by such an asshole, my crowd felt no warmth towards Brie Larson's Captain Marvel.

Endgame assumes we love her. Captain Marvel is given as many applause moments as the other big players, as a Captain America or Thor. But this crowd just wasn't feeling it. They went crazy over everyone else, including supporting characters like Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), Wong (Benedict Wong), The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), and anyone -- and I mean anyone -- who hails from Wakanda, but Ms. Marvel left them cold.

It probably didn't help she's the movie's deus ex machina -- which is only a small complaint.

Endgame is a true epic, filled with spectacle and purpose. It has something good to say about the world, a real philosophy about the importance of humanity, family, and self-sacrifice, and there are countless moments -- big and small -- that surprise and pay off.

Best of all is the sense of closure that won't have you regretting even a moment of your ten-year emotional investment.

Legend has it that in their early days, they'd get warmed up for band practice by doing PaaE but never intended for it to be performed. However, at one of their first gigs Keith called it out to a surprised Lake and Palmer. So they included it in their set and the rest is musical history.

193 OK, Russians. This is a story as sent to me by a Kraut named Juergen...

"Story from the Cold War.

Location: Russian-Norwegian border, near the Arctic Circle, ca. Winter 1972. Cold to witch's tit cold.

A colleague of mine, Robert, was then a non-com in the Russian Border Guards stationed there. The border is guarded and mined. The troops there were a cross section of the Russian population, including Finns, Kazakhs, heritage Germans, Mongols, etc.

In the middle of winter the alarm sounds late at night because the tracked vehicle which was supposed to relieve the watch was hours late in returning. In meter deep snow glistening in the moonlight was the tracks of the little tank went straight through the minefield in the direction of Norway. As unbelievable as it may be, it seems that a whole watch together with their relief and their vehicle had gone off to the Class Enemy. This group was a mix of Finns, Germans, Kazakhs, and Russian, altogether seven men.

Twenty years later my colleague Robert ran into another heritage German, Mr. X, who was one of the seven. This is the approximate dialog:

Robert: So, how long did you take in planning that daring escape?

X: I'll tell you. About 5 minutes.

Robert: What? Only 5 minutes?

X: It all started with the Finns saying we've had it with this shit, and Russia's just a miserable place. What are we doing here in the cold? The Kazakh said something similar. The Russian said nothing at all. Then we said to the driver, hey turn right up there! That was it.

The Finns went to Sweden, the Germans to Germany, and the Russian promptly got married to a Norwegian."

She blew her wad on Sexual Personae. I recently bought a copy because it is so dense with ideas that are just popping out of every sentence that I have to take a breather after every paragraph to process what I just read. Everything after that has been article compilations or commentary on pieces of art; all very well done but more conventional fare. After Sexual Personae a large amount of her time is spent defending her persona created by that.

They probably assign no small blame to him for running at all in 2016, almost winning in 2016, and not being gracious enough after his loss in 2016, which they potentially attribute to a major cause of Hillary's loss.

I think they'll circle the wagons and get anyone else to be the nomination. If that fails, they will undercut him in the general behind the scenes to destroy his power within the party.

Oh yeah, they took a bit of artistic license with that piece. Added words (Lake's acoustic song in the middle) and their own arrangements but stayed pretty close to the original for a classical rock power trio.

I don't know. It's true s(he)'s very popular and a left icon. It's possible she would energize the base and they could all possibly agree to merge together to support her. Pictures at an Exhibition is actually a piano work. It's most familiar to people in an orchestrated version, the most famous of which is Ravel's, though there are others by Leopold Stokowski, Lucien Calliet (commissioned by Eugene Ormandy) and Vladimir Ashkenazy.

Similarly, Boris Godunov was for years heard in a performing version by Rimsky-Korsakov, though the original is increasingly used.

356 Predictions for someone to google and point to and say what do YOU know anyway:

Won't make it to Iowa:

Marianne Williamson (ultimate vanity candidacy, she won't be able to qualify for the ballot)
Wayne Messam (Who? Exactly)
Tulsi Gabbard (she's burned too many bridges)

Drops after Iowa:

John Delaney (self funded vanity)
Andrew Yang (self funded vanity)
Julian Castro (old, old news)
Amy Klobuchar (last finisher for the women)
Kirsten Gillibrand (next-to-last finisher for the women)
Seth Moulton (maybe - he might not get to Iowa, candidacy doesn't have any reason for being. Against the Iraq War? So was/is Trump.)
Eric Swalwell (candidacy is to troll Trump - a costly way to do it)
Jay Inslee

Drops after NH:

John Hickenlooper (honestly I just needed to put someone here)

Drops after SC:

Beto O'Rourke (he can fund himself past a poor showing in Iowa, and the big dropout after Iowa will make him look like a mover until he gets to SC)

Drops after Super Tuesday:

Elizabeth Warren (nobody really likes her anyway - Super Tuesday will demonstrate that definitively)
Cory Booker (he will already be reeling from going nowhere with the black vote in SC)

That will leave the field with this:

Joe Biden
Pete Buttigieg
Bernie Sanders
Kamala Harris

Bernie will run to the convention regardless of where he is. But he is already done.

Now here it gets tricky - Harris I don't think can win but the Dems can't let the last candidates all be white men. UNLESS - she drops out, immediately endorses Biden, and Biden says, immediately, I will be glad to have her on my ticket when we get to the convention. Despite the fact I think he won't win, this might actually make him win. If those campaigns are too bitter with each other to do that, that only leaves one candidate:

Buttigieg

Trump should have fired him!

Look at all the bad things he said about Trump!

"The previous Administration chose not to publicize the full story about Russian computer hackers and social media trolls, and how they relate to a broader strategy to undermine America. The FBI disclosed classified evidence about the investigation to ranking legislators and their staffers. Someone selectively leaked details to the news media. The FBI Director announced at a congressional hearing that there was a counterintelligence investigation that might result in criminal charges. Then the former FBI Director alleged that the President pressured him to close the investigation, and the President denied that the conversation occurred."

Watch enough 60's tv and you can recognize that there was a regular stable of actors and actresses that played all of the bit parts on almost all of the series that decade. They show up as witnesses on Perry Mason shows, too. 402 384 So when will Beta Beano self-identify as JFK reborn?

Already done.

Read an article about The Last Kennedy, whoever he is, (about why he isn't running for President) he was a freshman congressman with Beto and 4 of them were at restaurant and all the staff wanted selfies with Beto and were fawning etc and then Beto figures it out - hey, I am not that Kennedy guy, he's over there.

So in an article about Kennedy, they managed to make Beto - who IS running for President - out to be more Kennedy than the Kennedy.

Great battle scenes. Minimal Capt Marvel cuz this isn't really her gig.

Good script. Great Acting. Great directing particularly actions scenes. Some neat surprises.

Watch out on the internet cuz-

When Trump was leading with 10+ candidates in the field at 25% pundits said well at that anti-Trump vote will coalesce onto one of the other not-Trumps. But it ended up that a lot of the anti-not-Trump votes coalesced on Trump. I think it would work that way with Harris in California.

433 Avengers: Endgame

You know what was a really great super-hero story? "Bedlam at the Baxter Building," Fantastic Four Annual #3.

For almost a year, the FF had gone on a long journey of internal squabbling, losing their powers, fighting their way back into their headquarters against Dr Doom, culminating in (finally!) the wedding of Reed and Sue.

I think it was that same year that Dr Strange was sent on a long journey through multiple psychedelic Steve Ditko dimensions and really came into his own as a character. This was the same time as all the Marvel characters were really becoming a grand mythos.

And then, everybody (except I think the Hulk was shown off in a cave somewhere), every super-hero and most of their villains, teamed up for one grand Jack Kirby illustrated battle before the wedding. They even had the gal-comics characters, Millie and Patsy and Hedy and whatever. (Don't remember if they worked in their cowboy characters.)

And of course the classic scene of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby being turned away from the wedding (done sadly and badly with only Stan in one of those forgettable FF films).

That was the peak of Marveldom. They should've done that story. Oh, yeah, they didn't own the FF for films. Reboot!

But:

1. I consider a suspended campaign by someone far back in the pack the same thing as a dropout. Has one ever come back? McCain's campaign doesn't count, it was general election, he was leading or very close when he suspended, and then when he un-suspended he was never close again.

2. Brokered convention won't happen.

I've been saying this forever but if you really want to understand Rosenstein you have to go back to May 2017 and look what was going on. Remember what was happening at the time, who was running what, the public mood, the talk of collusion and Russian involvement with the Trump campaign, the investigation that had been going on for over a year that nobody knew about, etc.

Rosenstein has gotten a bad rap in this whole thing when the truth is he was actually the straightest of straight shooters. A rare thing in DC.

The really great character, and sometimes the lead, actors once upon a time could go from comedy to drama, melodrama to tragedy, with ease. See Edward G. Robinson, for example. Never won an Oscar, but was always believable, no matter what he appeared in. And many of those actors were distinctive in manner and voice, so that Rich Little and impersonators/impressionists like him made a career out of "doing" Bogart or whoever.

Now? Who's going to do impressions of Ryan Reynolds and Chris Hemsworth?

Debt $22 Trillion
to pay it off off in 30 years at 3.5%
$98.79 Billion/month
$1.18548 Trillion/yr
Current Spending
$4.0 Trillion
Current Tax Collections
$3.4 Trillion
So
3.4-1.1=2.3
So we could need to cut the current budget from 4.0 to 2.3 or CUT $1.7 Trillion to make the payments.

I've revised my opinion of Rosenstein. I don't think he was in on the whole attempted coupe, I think he was a weak man in a position of power, who was stuck in the middle.

IMO he could have short circuited a LOT of the crap that happened, including the long long Mueller investigation, if he had been STRONG enough, but I think he took a hands off approach to Mueller because he was afraid of public opinion, and Democrats in Congress.

He was in a no win situation. Either way he jumped he was going to get scorched from one side, or the other.

But that is the measure of a Man isn't it? What do you do when you hit those situations?

474 >>Elam could be very menacing. Somebody who's never seen any of his comic Western roles would be very impressed. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at April 26, 2019 11:08 AM (elsTe)

Watched the Peter Ustinov "Billy Budd" the other day. Another menacing character? Robert Ryan as Mr. Claggett.

Ernest Borgnine in The Wild Bunch. Had a smile like a shark looking at a baby seal with a broken flipper.

It's a free country. OTOH, if Hillary had won, would any of this criminal activity have come to light?

561 If he were alive today, Hump would prolly be blue dog dem or RINO, take your pick. Biden is actually the ONLY someone moderate IMHO. Maybe Klobuchar but she's as exciting as watching paint dry.

Biden is NOT a moderate and never will be. He's as left wing and corrupt as Hillary and the SCOAMF. He's a viscous person who should have never been close to national power.

562 @CBD:

I have a suggestion for a painting to show. I don't know if you will want it or not.

In the 1600s there were a lot of Dutch artists painting still life images. A woman, Clara Peeters, was one of them. What I love about her work: she painted exactly what she saw. So when her pictures include something shiny that reflects, she painted a little reflection of herself!

I searched and found one of her still lifes. This one has a wavy pitcher that's shiny, and it has multiple little Clara Peeters reflections, some of them upside-down. The golden thing in the middle has at least one reflection also.

Note: the link is to a high-resolution image on a site that lets you zoom in. Zoom in on the grey pitcher to really see several Clara Peeters reflections.
