Worth the watch. It's 6:25 long.

Also worth watching: Carl Benjamin, aka Sargon of Akkad, dressing down the press as "smear merchants" at press conference.

He's running on the UKIP line to be a European Minister of Parliament. Obviously, he's not going to win that, and I don't know if the UK will even have MEP's after the summer. (Assuming they don't just cancel Brexit.)

So this is really just a publicity stunt.

But he takes the opportunity to tell the media they're failures that no one trusts any longer. Check out his one minute (or so) rant.

MEPs have no power to speak of. They can't propose legislation. Their sole statutory power is to veto legislation proposed by the actual body in which power resides, the European Commission, and that veto can be overridden by the European commission. So the sum total of the European Parliament's powers is to slow down legislation for a short time. That's it. The commission tends to dump thousands of pages of arcane rules on them at the last minute, and they have no staff to pore it over, so most MEPs just give up and treat the whole thing as a no-work free money job.

Voter turnout was initially high for MEP elections, but turnout plummeted as voters realized its purpose was to provide the illusion of democracy while unelected bureaucrats exercise actual decision making authority. When you have really low turnout protest candidates have a big advantage. And Benjamin has the advantage of a large youtube following, so he can go around the press.

Not that it matters, in the end. If he's elected Carl is likely to be as outrageous as possible in an effort to clarify the institution's farcical nature.
