Earnings and Economic Data May Indicate That Fears of a Slowdown Were Overblown

Unexpectedly!

According to Refinitiv, 74% of the companies reporting so far have beaten expectations. Based on forecasts and actual reports, earnings for the S&P 500 as a whole are expected to decline 1.7%, the first negative quarter in three years. Some forecasters had projected an earnings decline of 4% or more.

...

The equivalent of the economy's first-quarter report card will be released Friday, with the first reading of GDP. The outlook for first-quarter growth has suddenly shifted upward, after a series of better data releases later in the quarter.

CNBC/Moody’s Analytics Rapid Update survey shows economists’ median forecast is now tracking at 2.4%, way above the 1% expected earlier in the quarter, when severe winter weather and the government shutdown were stifling the economy.

12 > The gov shutdown hurt who, exactly?

Near as I can figure, a "government shutdown" just means that government employees get paid time off.

As far as I know, they've always gotten retroactive pay for the time of the "shutdown", despite not actually having to show up.

Nice work, if you can get it.

116 LASue there is at least one publicly known tidbit of central interest on the question, a reference to a briefing of the WH counsel for a meeting involving some of the top perps.

This is where the country gets to show how small and stupid it is. The logical presumptions alone, of course, mean this all was done with WH approval and awareness. But the current tidbits - thing I referenced above, NSA Rice's bizarre 1/20/17 memo to the file, the 200+ "unmasking" requests using the USUN's name, and many others - will become a full picture if any real investigation is conducted.

And then - oh my. The idiotic instinct to shy away from the proper course of action will be controlling for most of the Beltway. Things may come down to an implausibly dramatic situation, where it's Trump nearly by himself - joined by any informed intelligent citizenry out in the country - deciding whether to leech the poison out of our system, or drive it even deeper by *not* pursuing and prosecuting all those who've earned it.

Remove line feed.

As of close of business yesterday, Total Public Debt was $22.03T. Debt Held by the Public (real money borrowed from bond market) is $16.19T. Balance, Intragovernmental Holdings (which are the IOUs for the trust funds) is $5.84T

If you want it down to the penny, you can find that if you dig. The DTS rounds to the nearest million, which for the federal government, is like a fraction of penny.

I'm sure you're not. The guiding principle of the IRS is to shake down people who have money, but no clout. Don't bother farting around with people who are broke, or with people with juice.

See, e.g., California. The cops don't bother writing traffic tickets for wetbacks, because they can't - or won't - pay the fines anyway, and in extremis will just bugger (temporarily, alas) to Mexico.

It used to be that the cops would impound Mexmobiles, but the liberals put paid to that, because reasons.

Middle class Anglos are another story. The authorities will fuck middle class anglos into the ground, partly because they can, partly because they are greedy for money, and partly because they need to people to pick up the slack engendered by the deadbeat wetbacks.

I wish I were exaggerating.

202 Mrs. YankeeFifth has worked with lots of people declaring bankruptcy in a community service role. Her stories of the obscene amounts of stuff that people with no income have are equally depressing and shocking.

Which, of course, is probably why they're bankrupt.

When my kids were little, they'd suggest that some people had a lot of money because they had a lot of stuff.

I used to point out that they certainly used to have a lot of money, but whether they still did or not was unclear.

It was the same conversation we had when we passed a house that had chi-chi cars, a boat, and four ATVs out front. I told them that those folks have a lot things we didn't.

Including a foreclosure notice on their property.

It grinds my gears too. I was lucky, as in both kids received academic scholarships (at an out of state university, natch; no way the children of Anglo taxpayers gets a dime in California). The University of California basically said, "Take your 800 SAT scores and shove 'em. We've got to support people pursuing majors in Lawnmowing Studies. Besides, your daddy and his family before that only paid exorbitant California state income taxes for a couple generations, so what makes you think you should get an education at the university he helps and has helped to pay for?"

When I get down to 1/2 tank, I fill it up. It cost $26 the other day, and that will last for about 2 1/2 weeks before I have to do it again. So that's not too bad.

When I was younger I'd let it get almost down to empty before filling up. Of course gas was cheaper then. But one time I miscalculated and ran out of gas. I decided not to risk that again.

239 Is there a topic? Because I'm going to go off it. I just have to tell this.

I was driving home this evening and saw two cars pulled over on the side of a major highway. One person was outside the driver's side door of the rear car.

I'm not sure if it started just then or it was already happening but when I looked the guy outside was whaling away on the driver, roundhouses from both hands. I pulled up behind the victim's car and formulating an intervention plan when punchy guy stopped, got in his car and drove off.

I pulled up next to the victim's car on the off-road side and he was a mess. Older guy (Punchy was young) in a daze. So I called 911. When Old came to he asked if I had seen the punching, and I told him I had and that I'd called the cops.

Cops came and I ended up waiting around for an hour to give a statement. Unfortunately because I was behind the victim's car I didn't get a look at Punchy's car, but I did get a good look at him.

So I'm telling you the story because my heart is still racing.
