Gun Thread: Reloading 101 Pt. Dos [Weasel]

tax day graphic scaled.jpg

You all do realize your tax returns are due tomorrow, right? And if you haven't finished your taxes, what in the hell are you doing here? Hopefully, you're finished and have a small refund in the bank and need something to spend it on. Why not buy gun stuff, or more specifically, reloading gear! Let's pick up where we left off last week and look at preparing your reloading bench for action, shall we?

Did you get your reloading manual yet?

So this week we're going to start setting up some of the shiny new reloading gear we discussed last week. But before we do, a couple more housekeeping items. As a reminder, please do not list specific load powder charge weights when discussing reloading. If you like, you can mention the powder youre using and the velocity, but unlike the food thread, let's keep the specific recipes to yourself. Thanks.

Next, throughout this series, I am going to discuss reloading for the .38 Special. It's an easy cartridge to work with and generally forgiving for the new reloader. However, the concepts discussed here are applicable to any straight-walled handgun cartridge. We will save rifle cartridge reloading for another time. 'Kay?

Finally, I'd like to reiterate this material is intended for the novice reloader. We're fortunate to have reloaders here with years of experience, but for now let's keep the information basic.

***

One of the first considerations is where to set up your reloading operation. I know benchrest shooters who reload in their vehicles at the range, and others with enormous setups occupying large spaces at their home. Let's assume you will at least be indoors and after that, all that's really required is a modest amount of workspace if youre using a basic single-stage press. What makes a good reloading location? I'd say there are a few key elements. A quiet place to work undisturbed and uninterrupted, in a comfortable and climate controlled area. You will need a reasonably solid bench or countertop workspace about 36 to 48 inches wide. This is just a approximation and you may find you need slightly more or slightly less space, depending on how you like to work. If you have a basement area where you can spread out that's great, but I want to assure those in a smaller home, an apartment or condo for example, can reload just as effectively as everyone else. A kitchen counter will work fine. For those in that situation, I will give you an idea below for keeping your reloading setup easy to breakdown and store in a medium size storage tub.

Tips for selecting and reloading in your work area:
- locate the bench away from direct air flow from forced air vents, ceiling fans, etc.
- store powder and primers in original containers in a cool, stable environment.
- whenever possible, choose a quiet area, free from foot traffic and other distractions.
- plan your reloading session so you can complete different steps entirely, with logical break points.
- never, ever, ever have more than one type of powder on the bench at a time.
- always check your work. If something looks or feels funny, stop and investigate.

The Press

redding press scaled.jpg
Redding Single Stage Press

I'm going with the assumption you have purchased a single stage reloading press like the one shown above. You will note that it's a sturdy piece of steel designed to be bolted to the edge of a workbench. I'm lucky to have a nice, but by no means expansive, countertop workspace in our laundry room. It's in a quiet part of the basement without distraction, and WeaselWoman was nice enough to get all of her stupid laundry shit out of the way and allow me to take over what's supposed to be a folding area. I did not want to drill mounting holes in the countertop, so I mounted my press(es) on a short double thickness of 1"x 6" pine board, and use two 4" C clamps to fix the assembly into place on the countertop. Just countersink the bolt heads so the board rests flush, and it's every bit as solid as if it were bolted directly to the countertop. When configured in this manner, the gear can be easily stored away between reloading sessions. The important point is to mount the press to the board or directly to a bench in a way so the the ram function of the press is not impeded, so play around with the setup and operation before you start drilling holes!

Your press is the primary tool on your bench. I'm right handed so I have my press on the right side of the workspace. The press is just that; a device with a mechanical ram that moves up and down when the handle is pulled. It doesn't do much by itself without reloading dies, which screw into the top of the press and perform different functions. Brass cartridge cases are shaped and resized under pressure produced by the ram and die, and in order to achieve the necessary small tolerances they need to be setup carefully. You will check the die function with precision measuring tools such as the calipers and case gauge included on last week's shopping list.

Reloading Dies - What the heck are they and why do I need them?
Reloading dies size and shape the brass cartridge and are caliber specific so, for example, you cannot reload .45 ACP cartridges with dies made for the .38 Special. This means you need separate dies for each caliber you plan on reloading. In order for a new or used case to be reloaded, it first needs to be sized to certain specifications for the cartridge. These specifications are maintained by SAAMI the organization that makes sure a specific cartridge fits properly into the specific chamber designed to fire it. An extensive catalog of cartridge specifications are maintained online and it's a great resource.

General Die Setup and Adjustment
Most dies simply screw into the top of the press. Hornady presses use an additional sleeve that locks into the press that makes changing dies a little quicker, but they all work basically the same way.

NOTE: Dies are shipped from the manufacturer with a coating of something as a rust inhibitor which should be removed before they are used the first time. Simply take apart the dies and spray with a cleaning solvent; Ballistol, WD-40, Hoppes 9 - whatever you have handy, and wipe clean (with a cloth!). Its not a bad idea to keep them very lightly oiled if you are in a high humidity location. Just a light spray is all you need, which can be removed before you use them again with a chamber mop.

To setup a die for the first time, perform the following steps:
- insert appropriate caliber press shellholder into the top of the ram. It just snaps into place.
- without a cartridge in place, lower the handle to raise the press ram to it's uppermost position.
- screw the die body into the press, so the bottom of the die just touches, or is very slightly above the top of the shellholder.
- screw the locking ring on the die body down until it rests on the top of the press and tighten the set screw.
- as you begin work, you may find small adjustments are necessary - simply loosen the locking ring, adjust the die, and tighten the ring and set screw.
- sometimes when the locking ring is set it makes the die difficult to remove from the press. A few whacks on the locking ring with a rubber mallet will usually do the trick.
- once properly set, you should not usually need to make additional adjustments. Simply screw in the die until it's stopped by the locking ring. Specific considerations for individual die setup are discussed below.

A properly set die will perform it's function at the top of the ram stroke, just as the lever begins to cam over and stop, and without a great amount of force. This is an important point. An improperly set die will return inconsistent results due to the application of variable force, and possibly damage the case. As you gain experience, you will notice many steps are done based on the feel of the amount of force required to complete them. Anytime anything changes, STOP WORKING, and investigate. Each step should be completed smoothly and without a huge effort. If you find yourself needing to use a lot of muscle, then something isn't working right and needs to be corrected.

A good video on die setup is here. A couple of points - the guy in the video has various interpretations of the word "cannelure" (can-ne-lure), and also doesn't seem to embrace the use of the die locking ring. Other than that, it's a fairly decent look at the process of setting up the 3 dies in your set. The press he is using is slightly different design, but the die setup instructions all still apply. There are a bazillion videos on reloading, so look around if this guy bugs you. If you find yourself actually doing any of this and have questions, please feel free to email Gun Thread technical support who will be happy to help!

You'll recall last week we talked about the dies and the functions they perform in the reloading process. Let's review them in a little more detail now, including ways the setup differs among the three dies.

Sizing Die
When a cartridge is fired, it expands against the chamber wall to seal the breech, then snaps back a little but not quite all the way. Depending on the chamber, the fired case may be several thousandths of an inch (.00X") larger in diameter than it was before firing. The sizing die simply returns the case to the correct pre-fired diameter. You will notice a pin sticking out beneath the sizing die. That's the decapping pin and it punches out the used primer. In a new or unprimed case the pin is just along for the ride. The screw and smaller locking ring on the very top of the die are used to replace or make adjustments if needed to the decapping pin depth which should be set to just pop out the used primer. To setup a sizing die just follow the steps above.

Expander Die
The second, or expander die is used to very slightly flare the mouth of the case to accept the bullet. Set up the die as described earlier so the bottom of the die is barely touching or just above the shellholder. Next, adjust the expander plug inside the die using the smaller screw and lock ring on the top of the die. When properly adjusted, the expander die will flare the case mouth by a few thousandths of an inch to accept the bullet. It's a barely perceptable amount to the naked eye, but it allows the bullet to begin the seating process without being shaved by the edge of the case mouth. Use caution to avoid oversizing the case which can lead to reduced case life.

Seating and Crimping Die
The third die in the set performs two operations. It seats the bullet to the desired depth and applies a slight crimp to the case mouth to hold the bullet in place. There are two steps to setting up a seating/crimp die. First, back the seating stem screw on the top of the die counter clockwise, or up, most of the way and then screw in the die body in to the press until the bottom is a couple of turns above the shellholder. Next, place a dummy (unprimed and without powder!) sized and expanded case into the shellholder and place a bullet on top. Now cycle the press and advance the seating stem by small increments until the bullet is seated to the desired depth (more on this later) checking the overall length with calipers or using a case gage. Now back out the seating stem several full turns.

Leaving the cartridge on the ram in the full up position, screw in the die until you begin to feel the resistance of the cartridge. Lower the ram and advance the die in small increments, raising the ram after each adjustment and checking until the desired crimp is achieved. Bullets with a cannelure (groove) will require more downward adjustment to achieve a "roll" crimp, where the case mouth is very slightly curved into the cannelure. Cartridges which headspace on the case mouth (.45ACP for example) require less downward adjustment of the die body to achieve a "taper" crimp. Do not roll crimp jacketed bullets without a cannelure as you may damage the jacket, and again, do not roll crimp any cartridge that headspaces on the mouth of the cartridge, taper crimp these instead. Now lower the locking ring and tighten the set screw on the die body.

Finally, you will need to reset the seating stem. With the dummy cartridge on the ram in the full up position, lower the seating stem screw until you feel it stop against the top of the bullet and simply tighten the upper locking ring. The die is now configured to seat and crimp in a single step.

We'll discuss the various measurements as we begin the step-by-step reloading process. For now, we simply want to have the dies configured approximately. We will discuss making small final adjustments later.

NEXT WEEK: Setting up the powder dispenser and scale!

P.S. Looks like I forgot to include much (any) non-reloading content this week. Sorry! Feel free to discuss any gun stuff that interests you!

16 A bit of a coincidence after the last gun thread. This week a friend told me he wants to learn to reload but wants to keep it simple and not too expensive at first. He's more than willing to spend as needed for things like a scale. He'll only be reloading for 38 special for the foreseeable future. Do I have any thoughts or advice?

OMG! Do I ever!!

I thought of all the presses and other tools we discussed. Here's what I'm going to suggest.

- The Lee hand press kit which includes the press, a tube of Lee case resizing lube, a powder funnel and the Ram prime. The kits are available for 50 to 60 bucks. The Lee basic C style mounted press will serve as well but isn't portable.

- The Lee carbide 4 die set in 357 magnum. The 3 die set will do but I like having the individual crimp die included in the 4 die set.

- Other tools: balance beam scale, Lee dipper set, powder trickler, primer pocket scraper and reamer, a case tray, and at least two reloading manuals.

It occured to me I haven't loaded a complete cartridge on the hand press for decades, so I should test it.

I lubed the cases. The Lee case lube is water soluable and a little goes a LONG way. (Yes, I thought of the Brylcream "a little dab will do ya" commercial.) Not strictly needed with a small revolver case and carbide die but it made a big difference. The lube wipes off with a paper towel. The Ram Priming tool was faster and more reliable than I imagined. Almost as fast as the hand held priming tools. Just make sure your hands are clean and dry before handling the primers. Charging and bullet seating went as usual.

It's hard to estimate time since this is single stage processing. I'm sure you could do a box of cartridges in half an hour once you get the process down pat. The process was rather relaxing and required much less effort than I remembered. Even a kid or small woman would be able to use the hand press.

17 If you don't have space for a permanent mounted press, an old Workmate or similar will work just as Weasel showed above. The advatage is the Workmate can be folded up and stored flat.

That is an excellent idea.

Seeing the reloading press clamped to the quartz/solid surface counter-top fills me with dread. When you're sizing a big rifle cartridge case (such as a .30-06), you are going to be pressing down with quite a bit of force. That means the edge of the cabinet wall is going to be exerting a reactive force up, while you're pushing down. Do that often enough and I'm pretty sure you're going get a brittle failure of the quartz counter-top and then Mamma is going to be PISSED. That counter-top material is not designed for that sort of duty cycle at all.

51 I have an XD in 45 acp. It has been accurate and reliable and handles recoil better than I expected.

I like the cartridge but shoot them more often using the 45acp cylinder in an old Ruger Blackhawk.

I have loaded a fair amount of rifle cartridges and generally don't find I need a tremendous amount of force, particularly with properly lubed cases. Good point though - pay attention and make sure you don't overstress anything. As I mentioned in the post, if you need to use a lot of muscle, you probably should stop and investigate what's going on.

Don't have the Blackhawk but do have an old Smith &Wesson Model 25 that I bought 30 years ago with the .45ACP cylinder. It is fun to occasionally shoot a cartridge designed for a semi-auto out of a revolver. I've got some of the full moon and half-moon clips squirreled away for that purpose.

60 Range report wall o'text, feel free to skip.

I have completed by 1000 round test of the SIG P320 with the Romeo1 reflex sight.

I had zero malfunctions, though I did have one underpowered round that failed to cycle the action. It was audibly less and was not a functional failure. So, props to SIG, the 320 works.

The raised sights, although they allow me to co-witness through the optic, means I have to COVER the target with to be on target. I don't like that, it means giving up a level of precision that I want. It might be fine for combat conditions where I'm putting a lot of bullets in someone.

The trigger lacks a visible trigger safety, in fact, there's no external safety of any kind. Supposedly the gun is safe but I've also heard otherwise about ND with the gun. No problems here but I was only shooting at the range. The trigger just feels different from my Glocks/XD, there's very little take up and little indication of where it will break. It may please 1911 fans, though.

The gun felt fine in hand, not perfect but not a brick, no complaints from me but it might not have an aggressive enough texturing for some. But that's an easy fix with Talon grips or skateboard tape.

Accuracy was below what I can achieve with a PPQ or an XD or Glock. But, in fairness, that might be because I have many tens of thousands of rounds through them and just 1k with the P320. It's not inaccurate though.

The takedown lever gets very hot, as it transfer heat directly from the barrel to my thumb, with a high grip. At 150 rounds, it's uncomfortable, almost painful at 200 rounds. If you shoot with gloves, this may not be an issue, or if you shoot less than 200 rounds at a time. But it's a bad design, in my opinion.

The reflex sight seems to work, especially at speed, it's much faster bringing the gun on target after the first shot. For the first shot, I can see slowing down to 'find' the dot. But when I took my first shots, I'd find the front sights and fire the first round with them and then find the dot when coming back to target. I feel it helped tighten groups up, but it also could be a distraction as I'm 'chasing' the dot. But when dialed in, yeah, one big hole at 7 yards.

I want to try the XD OSP with the Vortex Venom sight for comparison, though. So I'll probably try to trade it straight across, or if I have to go through a gun store, I'll probably lose money. But worth a shot.

65 Did I go to the range?

Yeah. It was so windy I didn't bother to take the rifle. Then it was so windy that I was unstable while shooting the pistol. I tried shooting sitting down (arms resting on knees) and the wind was STILL pushing me back and forth so I gave up.
Managed a few good groups anyway...

Anyway, I'm about to buy a S&W M&P 15-II (ar-15) and thought it might be "clever" to eventually swap out the stock barrel with a 24" one. Ballistic tables tell me I'd get about 7.5% more velocity.
Many of those barrels cost less than $100 so that's not a big deal.
Other than looking goofy with that looooooong barrel sticking out so far past the hand guard are there any drawbacks to going with a long barrel?

And no, I'm not worried about house-clearing operations.

81 Seeing the reloading press clamped to the quartz/solid surface counter-top fills me with dread.
Posted by: Retired Buckeye Cop is now an engineer at April 14, 2019 07:39 PM (5Yee7)

That is a good thought, if the countertop is actual rock or ersatz marble. If it just formica, on an MDF base board, it should be pretty forgiving.

I am not a fan of granite, marble, or "quartz" countertops. Real rock is very, very heavy, and has practically no shear strength or tensile strength. Compressive strength up the wazoo, though.

97 found this great tip at the linked thread, right on the First! page:

When you first try out a new type of bullet...
You are gonna get 100 rounds out of a box of them, right?
No.
You are going to get 99.

You take the first one and make a dummy round with it. Do this for each bullet type you buy.
Then when you want to switch your dies from 125 grain JHP to 158 grain LRN, all you have to do is loosen up the die, run your loaded 158 grain dummy round the whole way in, and tighten everything back up until it won't move anymore.
It is a very quick way to adjust reloading dies and even works with the crimp when you have to change from .38 SPL to .357.

99 OK, I'm probably going to step in some doo-doo here but that does not look like a very stable set up for something that you are dealing with minute tolerances.

A C-clamp will lose a certain amount of grip after a few repeated motions and will thus effect the pull on your press.

110 Reloading related but a bit O/T. I came across some articles about low power loads for rifles. I've done this in the past and it is a lot of fun, especially with full size battle rifles like the Springfield 03 or British SMLE. If interested, do a search on C.E. Harris and The Load.

There is another low power category called gallery loads. This consists of using a round ball and thumb pressing it into the case mouth of a rifle cartridge using tiny amounts of pistol powder. There's more to it but it might be worth looking up. They can be quite accurate out to 50 yards.

I don't regard these as good for beginners but might be interesting.

116 There is another low power category called gallery loads. This consists of using a round ball and thumb pressing it into the case mouth of a rifle cartridge using tiny amounts of pistol powder. There's more to it but it might be worth looking up. They can be quite accurate out to 50 yards.

I don't regard these as good for beginners but might be interesting.

Will the flash from the primer reliably ignite a small amount of pistol powder lying loose in the "bottom" side of the shell as it sits in the chamber? Or is some sort of wadding used?

118 99 ... "I'm probably going to step in some doo-doo here but that does not look like a very stable set up for something that you are dealing with minute tolerances.

A C-clamp will lose a certain amount of grip after a few repeated motions and will thus effect the pull on your press. "

Hi Ben Had, The set up is actually adequate for most reloading. But even with a bit of overall press movement, the ram will stay in position with the die.

120 Want to say thanks to all the horde for all of your tips last Sunday. When I told Mr NEC that I wanted to take a basic handgun course while he was out of town he suggested that I wait til he returned home. He wanted to go as well. We are scheduled for a class the first week of May. We checked out the range one night last week and then I booked our class.
He's been researching handguns and spoke to our friend the retired Marine who gave him a few tips.
I have been looking at the Kimber Micro 9 as a rental for the class and he will rent either a Beretta or a Glock.
The person at the rental desk at the range tried to talk me out of the Kimber saying that the barrel is too short for me to train with due to accuracy issues. Need a longer barrel. I'm hopin the hubby and I can trade guns during the range time that is part of our class.
I'm thrilled that we are taking the class together. He's shown zero interest in shooting and inferred that his disinterest was based on having served in Vietnam.
If I could I would like to personally strangle the assholes who made the return of many of those that served in Vietnam something that they should be ashamed of. How did we go from honoring those that served in prior wars to shaming Vietnam vets as baby killers and the like. I know that he was treated badly even though he doesn't talk about it. I also give credit to our friend the retired Marine and his wife who is retired Navy for helping him get over how he was treated. Without them I don't believe he would be accompanying me to this class. He also after all these decades proudly displays a Vietnam Vet license plate on his truck.

Reloading question / general question for the Kahr owners out there - the Kahr hates my cheap FMJ practice ammo. Have purchased some Horde-recommended Hornady Critical Defense cartridges (though that's spendy merely for practice) and I also see that the same Hornady bullets are available for re-loading

a) Anyone else reloaded for Kahr?

b) Any less-expensive Kahr practice ammo suggestions?

I'm not able to answer your Kahr question in particular, but one of my 1911's would not feed a semi-wadcutter bullet reliably, no matter what I tried. Solution? Switch to round nose bullets for that gun. That's the great thing about reloading - versatility!

You'd have to use wadding, otherwise you'd end up with with a sizable gap between the powder and the projectile, and you get interesting pressure waves bouncing around in that space.

Interesting pressure waves are contraindicated.

AOP, I never had a problem and never used wadding. The general procedure is to tip the rifle up a little to settle the powder against or close to the primer. The use of fillers, like dacron fibers, can make pressures unpredictable and is not done anymore although it was sometimes used in years past.

I disagree with the range guy: you are obtaining familiarity with that Micro 9 to determine its suitability as a defensive firearm for YOUR use. You aren't attempting to achieve ultimate accuracy at extended ranges. Typical gunfights involving police in the U.S. occur pretty close-in (something like 8-10 feet or so).

You want to make certain you can rack the slide for loading/unloading, tolerate the recoil and generally hit what you aim at. Groups of about 6 inch diameter in center-of-mass at 10 feet range would be pretty acceptable in my opinion. You won't win any target shooting prizes but that's not your reason for being there.

I checked that pretty shortly after the pre-Mrs. Cop and I had developed a serious relationship. I told her I loved her, I owned numerous firearms, would not get rid of them and if that was not acceptable we needed to end the relationship. Since we've been together for almost three decades, I guess I was acceptable.

I still have to get one for rimfire guns. I want the books partly to do my own repairs and I have no faith in internet sources remaining available. They aren't cheap but are less expensive than a trip to the gunsmith.

This is for basic maintenance and one for one part replacement. I don't do metal work or more extensive modifications. For my purposes, the rifle volume is to be able to take apart bolts, clean and lube the parts, and reassemble them properly.

Hi Clutch - I've never reloaded 10mm, but there is not really any difference in terms of technique. The only difference between calibers is some are less forgiving than others. If you stick with published loads, it should be pretty much the same as I'm describing here.

185 125 For noise and inaccuracy the .50 M2 (yes, not accurate)...
---
not if you sandbag the tripod legs, install the T and E mechanism, and set it to single shot. Carlos Hathcock got kills in SVN with that set up, over a mile away, IIRC.
Posted by: redc1c4

And the myth starts with the Brits in Korea even earlier. You can sandbag, wire, put it a a anvil vice, do what ever you want to do to the M2, but they are not repeatably accurate. Look at how John Moses Browning PBUH designed the thing. It is a recoil gun where the barrel ( the one thing that for accuracy should not move) moves on the bush/bearing as it recoils and sets up in a different spot between shots. I believe Carlos did hit targets at long range with a .50 M2, he may just have fired a few more rds to get the hit. I struggle with the idea that people think they are accurate as facts tell me otherwise. YMMV.

Rim fire can be reloaded. You can order a kit of stuff to do it on the Internet. Probably not cost-effective, though.

192 FWIW, for any reloading newbies:
I've only been reloading for a few years, yet I can now produce a reliable, accurate round for every one of my firearms. They clearly exceed factory ammo.
It only takes reading and scrupulously adhering to the instructions in the books (like no alcohol, measure twice, cut once) and keeping good records of your attempts.
The first time I produced a 5.56 round that actually fired, ejected the brass, cycled the action and hit the target was a proud papa moment. I showed the rounds to Mrs. Red and she said they looked shiny, like jewelry.
So big hits all around.
And this is a great thread to bookmark, save and learn. I keep a reloading binder that has lots of pages from here. Good stuff.

193 Anyone familiar with the Walther P22? I want to buy one for my wife for her early morning walks We have had cougar issues out here since we've lived here however last year we had 5 cougars within a hundred yards of our house I realize it's a 22 doesn't have significant knock down power but I still feel it's an effective defense in that scenario that and I have a plethora of 22 ammunition the reason I'm looking at the Walter yes because of its reputation I'm not jamming you regardless of the quality of the ammunition you use it only has a 10 shot clip which is a downside for a 22 any thoughts out there or familiarity with the weapon?

Snagged a Norwegian Krag Carbine, original 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser chambering, all original, unaltered (and nearly mint) metal, but in a (nicely done) Bishop stock.

Scarce as hen's teeth, are Norwegian Krags. And I got it at about 1/5th of it's market value.

I other words, they had it priced like a Springfield .30-40.

Ooops, them.

208 I seldom comment here but a few things about reloading.

A) Blackpowder is something to be feared as it is extremely flammable and explosive--if you plan on reloading this stuff--follow safety rules for it religiously.

B) Smokeless powder is not an explosive but burns fast and hot. Clean your work area before reloading.

C) Have only ONE powder out and double, triple check the powder versus the reloading chart. Do not leave powder in your powder measure at the end of your job, clean it up and restore the powder to the container.

D) Consider either using your barrel if you have a semi auto or buying a cartridge check gage for the cartridges that you are reloading. This is especially important for all semi-automatic firearms. Older semi autos, you may want to use the barrel as the chambers may not be friendly to all bullet profiles.

E) Primers are your most dangerous component and take the most careful handling. They are a high explosive, can happily embed themselves into your body at high speeds if you are not careful, and should be left in the original package when not using or put back into the packaging when finished with reloading. Do not leave them out and do not use a vacuum around your reloading area without carefully checking for one of those little buggers. Kabooms have been known to happen.

For new reloaders, the THR (the high road is very friendly to new folks on reloading) and you can also learn a lot lurking at the cast boolits forum if you are reloading lead bullets.

210 181 .. If reliability is a concern, and it should be, there are a number of 9 and 10 shot 22 revolvers on the market. Maybe not as compact as a semi-auto but might be but worth checking out.

211 Ruger SR 22 is a fine .22 to carry. And lots of fun.
I don't think I've ever had a FTF (failure to fire) with any brand of ammo. It also looks good, fits the hand easily and won't break the bank.
Although, on general principle, I'd carry something bigger for critters like coyotes and cougars, ten rounds of .22 would probably do the trick.

214 I got hooked on reloading when I saw how accurate my rifle could be with the right recipe. The price is right too. I use Varget for my .308 and .223 bolt guns.

Started with the basic Lee kit and almost immediately started upgrading stuff. One thing that's saves your hands is the Lyman case prep machine. Chamfering and cleaning primer pockets gets old fast using hand tools.

Optics seemed all screwed up; you could see only a blur, looking in the eyepiece. Well, I quickly discovered that some genius had forced an extra eyepiece lens assembly over the objective end of the scope, which is simply a straight tube with a slightly recessed objective lens. Slipped that off, and the scope seems to work fine. I will rig up some way to fit it onto my old Cooey .22 single shot.

249 215, Thanks Weasel. I've read the AOS gun thread occasionally since it came about and you've been doing a fine job from what I've read. I have noticed a fair amount of new folks on THR and I wonder if this thread is causing that.

A few THR folks worried about an influx of trolls but so far everything has been copacetic with the new folks. There have been quite a few new folks showing up from late 2018-present.

The few trolls that do show up from time to time generally hit the general topics or strategy and tactics/rifles subforums. Some of the troublemaking is obvious when they try to shame the THR members for whatever outrage du jour exists. Occasionally a few odd question askers show up on gunsmithing as well generally on impractical alterations of existing firearms or plans to build their own.

To pick nits: thse holes are not countersunk; they are counterbored. A countersink makes a 45 deg, angled hole so a flat-head screw or rivet can be seated flush, or just below flush. A counterbore is a cylindrical hole, with a flat bottom.

261 To pick nits: thse holes are not countersunk; they are counterbored. A countersink makes a 45 deg, angled hole so a flat-head screw or rivet can be seated flush, or just below flush. A counterbore is a cylindrical hole, with a flat bottom.

I've got a P22. Nothing against it, it's ok.

For coyotes, I'd want something a bit stronger and centerfire.

Do you have your heart set on .22lr? Or on the P22 size?

Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards, buy ammo at April 14, 2019 09:42 PM (xJa6I)

267 FWIW, I got into reloading because of the great ammo shortages caused by politicos. I stayed doing it because I developed a milsurp bolt action acquisition and restoration problem. Some of those, you pretty much have to reload for if you want to shoot them on a regular basis prior to Prvi Partisan ammo becoming more widely available.

I would also suggest that a Lee Classic (not the cheaper aluminum one) Turret Press is a good beginner to intermediate press that simply works without a lot of the fiddling that you have to do on some of their other presses. You can start with single stage, manually move to the next die and so forth which is faster than switching dies back and forth. When you develop, you can then let the machine index to the next die for a bit faster reloading job.

272 Although, on general principle, I'd carry something bigger for critters like coyotes and cougars, ten rounds of .22 would probably do the trick.
Posted by: RI Red

My wife wants something compact. The issue with cougars is when you don't see them. I've had 2 encounters hunting Once with my .06 and once with my bow. Both times I smelled like a doe in heat. The warning on the product says not to put on person probably for that very reason. I am fairly confident that the cougar understood that I wasn't prey. Needless to say both (especially with the bow) were hair raising, orifice puckering experiences

282 To tie in the Gun Thread and April 15th:
For the first time in about 25 years, I didn't use my accountant this year. I also didn't owe the IRS anything; in fact I got a nice little chunk back.
Downside, if you're paying a lot of taxes, you're making a lot of money - I no longer am.
Although now retired, I took a part time job this year to keep me busy. Having seen some money coming back in, it makes me want to bring in more money.
Why? Because this frickin' thread (and unnamed cobs) has ignited my interest in long range shooting. And I just gotta have something that will ring the gong at 1000 yards. And I ain't affording it on part time retail.
So, commencing soon, I'm giving up my part time gig and going back to some legal eagling.
Weasel, I blame you. And thank you.

The Mosquito has kind of a shitty reputation for reliability.

I have a Ruger 22/45, and it might be my favorite pistol. Fun to shoot, plenty accurate, eats everything I feed it. The new generation is much easier to strip and reassemble. I also like that the design and manual of arms mimics the 1911, which is my carry piece. So this gives me cheap practice and warm up.

YMMV.

That Sig has .... shall I say, a "less than stellar" reputation in the shooting community.

Reliability seems to be lacking in the feeding rounds, ejecting rounds and staying in one piece mechanically arenas. Often all at the same time.

I get where you're at in the sizing and packaging arenas.

For what you're looking for, might you go up one size factor, and consider a Kel-Tec .22 Magnum, PMR 30 autopistol?

.38 special power levels and thirty rounds, to boot.

And though still a pussycat to shoot, it's better than the .22 LR to shoot the pussycat.

312 For rifle rounds, unless you are doing serious precision stuff (and if you are, you don't need advice here), the Lee Factory Crimp Die is your friend.
Much easier to adjust than other types of crimps, can be used with or without cannelures.
If you use a separate crimp die, just don't forget to adjust the crimp out of your seating die if you were using one that way.

Absolutely! One word of caution when using any older reloading data, though. Powder profiles *can and will change* over the years. Anytime you are looking at reloading data, check the date of the source material and always double check your intended load against another data source just to be sure. I have reloading manuals that date to the early 50s and some of the loads in it would be considered dangerous by today's standards. Speer is notorious for this, as I recall.
