Surreal Thread Before the Gardening Thread [KT]

Surrealism

According to the Britannica link above, surrealism in art and literature was supposed to have been confined to the period between WWI and WWII, more or less. But I think that we still have some surrealism with us today. At least in terms of its emphasis on the irrational.

The image of melting clocks seems appropriate to a piece of intersectional scholarship picked up by David Thompson:

According to our feminist educator, time "doesn't feel linear" for black people - all of them, presumably - because, she says, they live with "the residue of past historical trauma." You see, for "African-American folks," the present "feels like the past" - specifically, "narratives of race that are rooted in violence and a lack of freedom" - i.e., slavery - "can become our reality again at any moment."

And the very concept of time is racially biased. "White people own time". Sometimes I have problems with time. Maybe I need to get some genealogical work done to find out why I have a tendency to be late.

Maybe if I became a leftist, I could start slacking for social justice.

Thompson also mentioned an article in City Journal about leftist theories of crime.

The gulf between numbers on a spreadsheet and the harsh realities of the world sometimes fosters a romanticised view of criminals as victims, making it easier for criminologists to overlook the damage that lawbreakers cause--and to advocate for more lenient policies and treatment. Evidence of the liberal tilt in criminology is widespread. Surveys show a 30:1 ratio of liberals to conservatives within the field, a spread comparable with that in other social sciences.

May be worse in California. But it reminded Thompson of:

a Guardian interview with lawyer and activist Clive Stafford Smith, who airily dismissed burglary as "really quite inconsequential," thereby implying that the wellbeing of burglars is more important than the wellbeing of their numerous, often very poor, victims. Especially if the burglar is a "young black person." According to Mr Stafford Smith and Guardian columnist Decca Aitkenhead - for whom, such things are largely theoretical and not a routine fact of life - anger at being burgled and the subsequent sense of violation are somehow trivial, plebeian and unsophisticated. And so, these enlightened creatures pretend to feel sympathy for career criminals who may prey on their neighbours for years, while disdaining the victims' expectations of lawfulness, and justice, as "idiotic attitudes."

As always, scroll through the comments to Thompson's post. There is a suggestion that the academics above probably have security systems installed in their residences, "indicating neither consider burglary quite as 'inconsequential' as they claim it is."

Though I guess it is possible that they leave their doors unlocked to prevent burglary damage. What do you think?

Meanwhile, there were some good links at Maggies Farm on Monday, including a security system recommendation. If you're not too worried about Google spying on you. There are a couple of troubling links about Google, too. Could you have predicted this dilemma 15 years ago?

Hope that you have a good weekend, free of burglars and spies. Closing question: Is this proof that white people own time? Or not?

8 Yeah academics like to say poverty causes crime. The two are pretty correlated but the causation is backwards. Crime will cause poverty as people who want to work and grow their wealth so they can live a comfortable lifestyle will move away from being surrounded by crime.

Funny thing is, there actually was a depression in 1920, which is when the scandal broke. We don't hear much about that depression because the government did nothing and let the economy sort itself out. It was over in a year, and then came the economic boom of the Roaring 20's.

38 Surrealism is supposed to make you question reality and consider what the preconceptions are that are supported by familiar sights. Once the familiar sights of the world are distorted and represented in unusual and often frightening ways, it can kick the chocks out from under the preconceptions, and allows - or forces- reconsideration of the preconceptions that we carry with us in day to day life.

Originally it was a genre of art that followed WWI, and may have had the impetus by the question the war and its aftermath had; namely, now that we have done what we were supposed to and had this horrible world wide disaster that has destroyed us and killed us completely, was it worth it, and what went wrong? Were the tools wrong, or did we use them wrong?

Surrealism led by various steps to deconstructionism, which took the idea that literary and artistic tropes were culture based (why Japanese, Russian and Spanish fiction leaves so many English readers flat) and that in dissecting the tropes and underlying assumptions was a way to examine and understand basic preconceptions of a culture and a society.
This itself was seized on (or maybe pounced on, yes?) by critical theorists, along with the theory of neurolinguistics and advertising, as a tool to pull apart tropes as a way to get to the underpinnings of a culture, to allow the reassembly of the tropes to influence and change society itself into something "better" or more appropriate.

More appropriate of course generally means More Socialist, or More Advantageous For Socialist Intellectuals Who Don't Know How to Weld or Clean Out Irrigation Canals.

Apparently not ... if there is profit to be made by picking at very old wounds, even if the actual wound healed long ago or never existed, and has nothing to do with (for example) funding jihadists to take over Minneapolis (via that "diversity is our strength, whitey is racist" subversive lie)

history is written by the winners? Well maybe ... the north won the civil war and Lincoln is written as a god like hero. And the industrialists got their leverage, and never let go, except the bankers really got the power, and now have 20 global banks legally identified as TooBigTooFail or Jail. no really, there is a list, other banks prosecuted, not those boys.

Time is malleable for those immortals traveling at relativistic speed, but mostly the Orwellian History writers are distorting the past for their personal gain, and dumbing down the public.

80 The ancient Roman hour was not a constant thing. They divided daylight into twelve hours and the darkness into twelve hours such that an hour in December was considerably shorter than an hour in June. I assume this was because their primary method of measuring time was the sundial (although they also had water clocks and hour glasses). An example of reality bending to accommodate our ability to measure.

But I think that we still have some surrealism with us today. At least in terms of its emphasis on the irrational.

Its adherents call it "Postmodernist thought." All it is, is a codified form of madness wherein absolutes don't exist, which in itself is a gigantic contradiction and is so easily disproven that it can be dismissed immediately. It makes no sense whatsoever, which can be fun for a while (especially if you're stoned), but when people begin to actually take it seriously, everyone else needs to look out.
This has only become an thing because the media is making it something we're supposed to pay attention to. Sorry, Progda, I like my reality just fine as it is, thankew. That's hard enough to deal with already. I don't need any more chaos than I already have.

The Roaring 20s also happened then ... and all that leverage in the stock market is what led to the depression. Time really is distorted when one can leverage money 300:1, as LTCM did in the 90's. Why wait for profits when one can take them off money you don't have?

Labor produces at a fixed rate, but leveraged money (fiat money enters a whole 'nuther dimension of evil) ... leveraged money consolidates profits into the hands of the leveraged lender. And our government underwrote them when they failed, so they became infinitely large.

imo the root of all this is monetary policy that keeps people chasing fake money ... but our laws have allowed the fake money to "buy" real things. (Lamborghinis from the last thread).

Worse is when they buy up the whole nation itself, and the politicians have allowed that, underwrote them by mortgaging the kids into debt in the future ... real time traveling there. (but their buying the real estate with fake money is the worst, imo) The "debt" including all the promises is $200T for US ... who wins in the foreclosure?

94 kindltot, those are insightful takes on the origins of a couple of movements. Let me toss in, though, that "art appreciation" styles of academic overview have done more to roll them up together than mere reality would have: I've read quite a few essays and notes (should not admit, but, Tuchman among them) who say that the end-of-the-era, all-is-lost artistic (and more!) worldview was rolling along with some impetus well before World War I, even before the Decembrist rebellion in 1905.

What to make of this depends in part on whether you think the whole world really was changing its nature, and whether you are for that or a-gin it, and maybe not so much on whether you like the looks of the art that came out of it.
I've seen better nudes descending better staircases, so to speak.

101 An idea was born, time as a physical part of this universe.A Hypothesis was born, if we send a satellite around the Earth, it's greater speed than Earth will mean that time moves at a different rate on that satellite. The experiment was done, the extremely accurate clocks measured time moving at a different rate on the satellite than on Earth.

Conclusion, time is a physical part of this universe, a physical property. As such, it is not racially or in any other way biased. If, therefor, you see it as biased, you are wrong, and proven wrong. You are at odds with the physical properties of this universe, you cannot accept reality, you are insane.

kindltot, those are insightful takes on the origins of a couple of movements.

I concur. I can't help but notice something that's missing amongst all those economic theories: any discussion of how wealth is created. It seems that most of those money ideas you mentioned are done well after it's already made, and observing the bubbles they create, they're short-term and only of benefit to those with the money to shuffle around in that manner. They're not sustainable for any long-ish period of time.
We once had slow but steady and predictable economic growth, with housing prices being a good example. When the housing bubble started to happen, it looked highly suspicious compared to the decades of slow-but-steady increases that could be reliably depended on, especially by young families. I didn't figure something like that would last, and sure enough, it didn't. Those debt-based theories are to blame, IMO.

Slow and steady is good, even thought it's not sexy. We need to get back to that stability, especially in econ skools. Wealth and the creation thereof is the thing we should want.

Before there were feature films, Ben-Hur was on national tour, with a train full of special effects equipment for the live theatrical show. They had teams of live horses on stage, on treadmills. One can only imagine what a slip-up might have been like, or what the stage hands' chores came up to. Lew Wallace "did OK" on the book sales, but the traveling play made him rich.

Can't say enough about the the guy who wrote that book. Boy general, territorial governor of New Mexico, (then later) ambassador to the Ottomans. I have been to his study in Crawfordsville. Believe me when I say that this was a man who knew something about racing horses with little trailers on behind them. Also? His aunt's husband invented the machine gun.

If you can find VDH's little treatise on him, he analyzes Wallace's motive for writing the story with the particular spin it had.

127 "Anybody seen the video where she laughs at someone for being more concerned about al Queda than about the US Army?" kt

Lara Logan has gotten attention lately, with some bodacious commentary about the bias in the MSM. She has noted that most things are shades of gray, and the absolutism (OrangeManBad) has eliminated sound commentary.

imo, there are indeed shades of gray to the Omar statement. AQ is a problem because of the various BigPowers that enable/fund them, as a proxy for the other battles. Obama/Hillary (apparently) funded them and that is tied to the Benghazi affair (and Iran). Erdogan has moved toward caliphate status ... and now we hope the Saudi/Israel/Egypt coalition unite to fight ??? Iran/Syria (proxies for Russia?)

But we really do need to decide which side we (Americans) are on ... the West has values that make us America, and Omar (icon for the current left) appears to not share those values, not in the least. Democrats/MSM and open borders advocates are TheEnemy.

We hope the military (and some "white hats"?) is still on our side (we the people) ... while DeepState/BigMoney (Soros the icon for that) is clearly our enemy. This is the battle of our time, prosecution of the Mueller Coup necessary ... AQ is a bit player for the wrong side. imo

The bad news: the same policies that led to the housing bubble are being implemented again today.

It's cargo cult territory. If you give the underclass the trappings of the middle class, they'll become middle class. By this logic, if I buy a Yankees jersey, I'll join the Yankees. It disregards the obvious truth: that middle class trappings result from middle class values; giving the underclass middle class trappings while they retain underclass values is going to result in underclass members temporarily having middle class trappings. Briefly.

155 IIRC, at least by rumor, a guy was killed in the chariot race. One of the guards standing in the center of the arena gets hit by a chariot, knocked back into the wall behind him, and bounces out onto the course where a subsequent chariot ran over him.

That may be why they dropped out the music.

Backwards Boy, Spooner is all about property rights and contracts above government.

I
admit, once Spooner got older, he became more radical but in a more
absolute belief in property rights, and believed less that a government
could be controlled in any ways.

I've never read him and didn't mean to disparage any solid, proven economic practices (as opposed to what I consider "unicorn dust" that passes for today's economic edumacation.)

The first thing my Econ 101 said to the class was, "If you were to line up all the world's economists end-to-end, they wouldn't reach a conclusion." He wasn't wrong. What they're teaching kids about economics in skools today (if they even do that anymore) is so far removed from what I was taught in kollidge that I don't even recognize it. My reaction to 99% of it is, "What? Are you nuts? That's so fucked up, it's not even wrong."
Like this imbecilic talk about "reparations." Are they nuts? Because nobody in their right mind would suggest something that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Not too long ago, anybody who said something like that would get laughed out of the bar and stuck with everybody's tab for being an idiot.

the "academics" that develop the quant equations that run the trillion dollar hedge funds ... those are some very smart guys, for sure. Steve Bannon has some interesting commentary on globalism versus nationalism, as it applies to our markets. But all those trillions being run via shadow quadrillion dollar, unregulated derivative markets ... is "problematic".

imo we have to decide who we are as an American People. That was largely founded by WASPy (intellectual) founders, but they carved out civic concepts separate from Christianity itself. "A More Perfect Union" is not an economic system. A fair market is an outcome of a just government, but now the oligarchs (CFR) determine policy (to control the markets).

Markets of today, and a (contrived) monetary system. The efficiencies of global trading could be for the good, and certainly funding new ideas and allowing "money" for exchange purposes greases a lot of skids, but lending on leverage consolidates power to the leveraged "player" (who then can go bankrupt, or get bailouts ... not even a debtors' prison, no real "skin" in the game).

Money Creation has to be matched with the ability to prosecute the cheats, and that is where we lost control (to the something for nothing lies). The fed reserve laws of 2013 put outsiders in control perhaps ... but always evil tends to infiltrate ... eternal vigilance required. The "academics" arguing for communism are just propagandists for the hedge funds and global banks. imo

166 imo, there are indeed shades of gray to the Omar statement. Posted by: Illiniwek

AQ, aside, she said: "CAIR was founded after 9/11 because they recognized that some people did something and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties."

Omar is not just morally wrong, but as Don Surber caught, she is even factually wrong also.

CAIR was not founded after 9/11. It was founded by Hamas groupies after the first World Trade Center bombing in 1993. Some of them were involved with the bombing and all of them have said their goal is to impose Sharia Law on second-class Americans.

Omar herself was allowed to come here, gain citizenship, milk the welfare system, commit immigration fraud by marrying her brother and then serve in Congress. It doesn't sound like she was oppressed to me.

But she's right about one thing:

There was indeed spying on the community and massive governmental violations of the law so that "all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties."

That community was Donald Trump, his campaign, his administration and the Americans who elected him.

You don't CAIR, lady--but we do.

To me the real news in all this, apart from the stunning criminality and arrogance, is the sub-mediocrity of those involved. These are characters, and actions, from a bad, implausible bit of fiction. Clumsy, pathetic. And I'm not talking about the loathsome senior figures, the big names, whose rise had already alarmed many (things were worse than even the Clinton years) - Brennan, Clapper, et al. The career types. The Strzoks, that level.

The people in C-I were never super-men, but even a little experience with them in the good ol days of the Cold War leaves one astonished at the clownish quality of these characters. Again, leaving aside the incredible arrogance and departure from core values.

True.

Horology - no, not that, the study of the measurement of time - IS relatively recent, and owes much to the necessity of measuring longitude at sea. Latitude is easy; longitude, not so much. Measuring time accurately (the difference between noon at your location and noon at Greenwich, England) to determine your longitude was a vexing problem that took great ingenuity to solve.

Right. Pendulum clocks were pretty accurate on land but not so much on boats that rock back and forth. The chronometer had a spring loaded mechanism like a modern watch and would keep going no matter what the waves did.

So the chronometer enabled navigation. On the other hand, one guy with one chronometer could map noon at all of the lattitudes and longitudes of the seas and then publish tables. So we only needed the first one. (And a busy note taker).

I agree that al Queda may be a bit player in terms of their physical presence at this time. But I think their influence on Muslims worldwide has been a big problem. We see formerly "moderate" Islamic states imposing more forms of Sharia and so forth. Western countries caving to hard-line demands.

The new methods of totally decentralized warfare through terrorism that they popularized and pushed have also been a challenge.

From what I hear, bin Laden was quite compelling to an internet audience of young disillusioned Muslim men seeking meaning in life.
