My Claim: They Put Out More Good to Great Movies in 1982 Than Hollywood Has Put Out in the Last Fifteen Years
I was looking up First Blood and I clicked on this list of movies from 1982 and was surprised out how good so many were.
And how varied! Note the big variety of movie types, different genres, all that.48 Hrs. Annie Barbarosa -- This is the Gary Busey/Willie Nelson western. It looked like a trash movie, but I remember it being really good. And it was very well reviewed. The Beastmaster -- okay, so maybe this wasn't a great movie, but... well, it's kind of a cultural touchstone. Blade Runner -- obviously now considered a masterpiece (though not by me). Conan the Barbarian -- what can you say? Creepshow The Dark Crystal -- both of these movies might have been let-downs, but probably better than most movies considered "good" these days. Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid -- this gimmicky Steve Martin comedy was considered a let-down after The Jerk, but... again, I'd put this one up against most comedies in the past 10 years. Deathtrap -- nifty little puzzler. Diner E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial Fast Times at Ridgemont High Firefox -- like many Clint Eastwood movies, this was a bit like Clint's acting -- laconic and a bit too understated. Again, though: I gotta think this movie would beat the shit out of most action movies made recently. First Blood -- this is the movie I looked up to set me down this Wikipedia Walk. This is the first real action movie I remember being nuts about. Friday the 13th Part III -- hey man, the kills were in 3-D. Gandhi Halloween III: Season of the Witch-- I know this is weird, and I"m not saying this just to be different, but this is my favorite Halloween movie. Yes, the one without The Shape. Hurry up it's Halloween, Halloween, hurry up it's Halloween, Silver Shamrock... By the way, they did that particular song because they were out of money, could not write their own song, and wanted something free, in the public domain. They picked "London Bridge" and I think the director and producer sang that dumb little ditty, using it as a temp track until they did a more professional version. But they never bothered with the more professional version, and the temp track became the finished track. I, the Jury -- okay, this is probably not a good Mickey Spillaine movie, but this was back when they still made a detective movie or two every year. They haven't done that in 20 years. What's the last detective movie? Who Framed Roger Rabbit? It Came from Hollywood -- just mentioning this one -- this is that movie hosted by John Candy, Gilda Radner, etc., going through the crap horror movies of the 50s. Koyaanisqatsi -- This must have been a good movie, PBS played it like all the time! Missing My Favorite Year Night Shift -- I just rewatched this. I don't know if it completely holds up -- I think you really had to be a child to think that the obnoxious and dopey Billy Blaze was "cool" -- but it's still pretty good. (The Michael Keaton Trillogy of Night Shift/Mr. Mom/Gung Ho has been on the cable channels lately.) An Officer and a Gentleman One from the Heart -- I never saw this and I understand it was a flop but, hey. Coppola doing a big release. Must have had something good about it. Poltergeist Porky's Rocky III -- these last three movies were basically HBO's entire schedule for like two years. I could have also included "Grease 2" as a rash on HBO, also released in 1982, but that would tend to undermine my thesis about 1982 being a good year for movies. The Secret of NIMH Silent Rage -- not a great movie, but Chuck Norris vs an unstoppable silent serial killer patterned on Michael Meyers and Jason Vorhees? It's almost a Marvel Team Up movie. Sophie's Choice Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan -- so good. Also, pretty much never not on HBO. "Dey put kreatyures in our ears, Kepten!" Swamp Thing The Sword and the Sorcerer -- these last two movies are crap but I just want to remind you of them anyway. The Sword and the Sorcerer is that terrible fantasy movie with Lee Horsely as a guy with a three-bladed sword, like a giant Gillette Mach 3 Razor, where each blade can be fired off like a rocket.

If you notice in the opening credits, the film was financed by the government of India. Hmmm.
That explains why the first half of the movie hits hard on the notion that the Hindus and the Muzzies were best buddies, united against the British.
There was that small unpleasantness after partition, and subsequently three - now bidding for four - wars, but we don't talk about that.
Bullshit propaganda. And the movie totally whitewashed Gandhi's freakazoid proclivities, which were staggering.

That's a good point. That and movie rentals. ET and The Dark Crystal were the only ones on the list I actually saw in the theater. I saw the rest on cable when I was older. I had the shit scared out of me watching Poltergeist at my neighbor's long before I was actually ready for scary movies. That damn clown and the tree!

Favorites were Garp and One From the Heart. I seem to remember One from the Heart being cheesy noir, but it was my first introduction to Tom Waits, and the soundtrack is still among my favorites.
Sophie's Choice is a couple of hours I regret that I'll never get back.

A funny thing about taste: I love Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara--who was quite the hottie back in the day--and I showed my kids the John Candy "Food Repair Shop" bit...and Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas and yet...
SCTV almost never made (or makes) me laugh. SNL did. *shrug* And, weirdly, I found SCTV's leftism grating whereas I barely noticed SNL's (and I was just a dumb kid at the time anyway).

Super-tense and gritty in terms of emotion. The absence of any women in the cast helps, because it just focuses on men and their survival instincts (and paranoia, which is just a sometimes-flaky part of survival instincts).

The Verdict was the best film that year - it's message could be readily acknowledge by everyone who thought an injustice had been done - Newman was top notch. ST Wrath of Khan was the best of the whole ST genre, and everyone was great - but entertaining is not the same as mesmerizing.

1982 was a typical year for movies. However, compared to today's output, it appears remarkable.
I watched The Natural on TCM the other night. From 1984. A very good, but not great, movie in my opinion. But it occurred to me that I cannot think of many movies in recent years that come close to it in tone, effort, artistry, intent, etc. For some reason, I don't think they could make that movie today. The star power and acting talent simply isn't with us anymore.

What exactly was Stallone's character so angry about? And _whatever_ it was, why take it out on local LE?
Dennehy did what I would want my sheriff to do: keep no-good drifters out of town. Stallone did what a-hole drifters do: ignore the law and hurt the locals.
Like so many movies, it really doesn't hold up decades later. Just another 70s-80s era "Vietnam Vet goes berserk" cookie-cutter plot.

Yeah, that's the impression I got from it.
The ending sequence featured the first Atlas-Centaur test flight on May 8, 1962. It didn't go well. The tracking camera followed the debris all the way down to impact in the ocean.
But, long story short, they fixed the bugs, and Atlas-Centaur eventually became a reliable workhorse launch vehicle, with derivatives still flying today.

My parents were big Star Trek movie fans. They took us to the drive in to see II, I think. It was a double feature and John Carpenter's The Thing was the opener. I was a little young for that one.....I think they actually regretted that decision.

Species wasn't awful but Showgirls took really hot women and made them incredibly unpleasant and unsexy to watch. Like Requiem for a Dream had what could have been one of the sexiest scenes in human history but was instead awful and repulsive.

But you also have to remember the frenzy that people went into at the time. People were going to repeated showings at the theater to see Titanic. And that song was on the radio for a *long* time. That's the sort of thing that tends to make people a bit testy and irritable about a movie.

It's not surprising, either. It was right around the turn of the century when the foreign box office became more important than the domestic box office. That means the end of clever wordplay (it won't translate), non-obvious cultural touchstones, and complex plots. In other words, everything but the explosions.
They just keep making the same Campbell Hero's Journey movie over and over with a different skin. Made a lot of money doing it, too. Even franchises with paint-by-the-numbers plots and characters do well as long as they don't put the SJWs in charge.
A lot of people have been talking up Alita Battle Angel over Captain Marvel. Yeah, it's a better movie in the sense the acting was better and the entire thing was well executed. But for all that it's really the same movie when compared to the sorts of things you would have seen in the '80s.

Yes I do. I watched it on tape a couple years after, not in theater. Again, I won't refuse to watch a movie just because some other people liked it too much or too little. It is not a BAD movie. Porkys, or that John Wick filth, aren't even pimples on Titanic's butt, even with all of Titanic's flaws.
Jaws is brilliant. I won't refuse to watch it just because it was an overhyped megahit.

In the original, anyone else catch the goof when the bad guy's severed hand was dangling on a chain hanging from the back of Max's wife's car and I guess the angle wasn't working so you see someone else's hand holding the chain to get the right angle on it?

In my case I was a Titanic buff since I was a little kid. Of *course* I'm going to see a new Titanic movie. And I did, the first weekend it was released.

The Verdict is a masterpiece. The machinations of trial are too practical for real life, but the internal battle between settling and going for broke is real enough.
