Former Obama White House Counsel (And Clinton's Impeachment Defense Lawyer) Greg Craig Indicted for Lying About His Work as an Unregistered Foreign Agent for the Ukraine
Former Obama White House counsel Greg Craig was charged with making false statements on Thursday in connection with the failures by his former law firm to report its work for powerful clients in Ukraine.FARA is one of the most violated, and yet least enforced, laws among the DC set. But the feds started a new precedent in going like gangbusters after Manafort. How can they now roll over for Greg Craig, who was servicing the same PRO-RUSSIAN client as Manafort?
Mueller referred Craig to federal prosecutors, presumably because, while he discovered evidence of a crime, it wasn't a crime he was commissioned to investigate. He also referred longtime Friend of the Clintons Tony Podesta for the same failure to register as a foreign agent.
Federal prosecutors have charged President Obama's former White House counsel with making false statements in connection with his role in disseminating a report commissioned by Paul Manafort. Prosecutors allege that as an attorney in private practice, Greg Craig lied to officials at the Foreign Agents Registration Act unit after the Justice Department launched an investigation into Paul Manafort's illegal lobbying on behalf of his pro-Russian clients in Ukraine.
Since the spring, Mueller has referred matters to SDNY involving longtime Democratic lobbyist Tony Podesta and his work for his former firm, the Podesta Group, and former Minnesota Republican Rep. Vin Weber and his work for Mercury Public Affairs, the sources said.Oh, right -- and GOPe Grifter Vin Weber. Put 'em all in jail. Long story short: Greg Craig knew damn well he had to register under FARA but scrambled for ways to avoid doing so "with a straight face" so that he and others at his law firm wouldn't be barred from serving in the federal government in the future. And he lied about it. Another question: Why didn't Mueller himself prosecute? He prosecuted Manafort. If he's investigating "RUSSIAN INTERFERENCE," and counts Manafort's failure to register as under that general rubric, why is Greg Craig's exactly-similar crime not also under that rubric? Did the leftwing Democrats on his staff make some argument on Craig's behalf? Did they just not wanna prosecute Democrats?

Don't you not have a reasonable right to privacy in your car? If you consent, they'll do the search and maybe you'll get lucky and they won't find it. If you don't consent, they'll hold you up until they bring in the drug sniffing dogs and do a much more thorough search and find it anyway.

I noted this way back. Unless things have changed, registering for FARA was simple. A form you picked up at a bldg. near Treasury . And the thing about it is, by definition, there's zero benefit to *not* registering. Your value to the foreign client resides entirely in everyone knowing you are their rep; and everyone knows, in about 10 seconds, anyway. Have never understood the value of dodging the FARA registration.

You have a lesser expectation of privacy than you would in your house. Drug dog sniffs are not considered "searches" for 4A purposes.
However, the cops need either reasonable suspicion (federal standard) or probable cause (depending on the state) to search a car.
A drug dog alert would satisfy either standard.
BUT the cops also can't hold you on the side of the road for an unreasonable amount of time (waiting for a drug dog) without reasonable, articulable, suspicion that you are in possession of drugs. So if they hold you for 45 minutes based on a "hunch," even the dog finds the drugs, it's possible that'll get thrown out in court on 4A grounds.
If you consent, you have no argument.
...at least, I'm pretty sure that thats close enough to right. Criminal Procedure is not really my thing.

...On paper you have privacy and the 4th. In practice, there is no way you're going to avoid a search if they really want to search. Which is bullshit, of course. But not nearly as much bullshit as private forums/services for patrol officers where they trade plate #'s of vehicles as tips - even out of state - which later get pulled over after plate reader hits on whatever excuse they can manufacture on the spot.
The 4th amendment is dead, and a large fraction of traffic patrol work consists of shakedowns, theft, and illegal searches.

Another thing I'll do for a laugh is listen to a bit of Ed's show when Malcolm is on. It can be fun seeing them try to sound conservative while spouting pure conventional wisdom. On nuts-and-bolts politics it's like listening to two guys expounding on WWII in terms of the tactics of the Thirty Years' War. Again, fun in small doses.

I was had a "drug interdiction officer" pull me over for no reason and ask to search my car. He said he smelled weed (I don't smoke weed, and no one has ever smoked weed in my car.)
I was pretty sure he was going to plant drugs on me. I said "absolutely not" to a search.
But... drug dog came, scratched up my car a bit, didn't alert, and I was free to go after spending an hour on the side of the road in the middle of an 8 hour drive.

Yes, it is better not to consent to a search. One, do you know who has used your car last and what they have been up to--especially rentals. Two, you can directly challenge the reasonability of the search rather than the stop.
Stops have a lower threshold of evidence needed to trigger which is reasonable suspicion. It is defined as articulable objective facts that would make a reasonable person believe that a crime might have been committed and it is lower than probable cause.
Searches require probable cause and either a warrant or sufficient objective evidence present for the officer to conclude that it exists. Still, it is easier to get the court to second guess a search rather than a stop.
On consent, you would have a much stiffer road to hoe to get any consensual search thrown out. Morale of the story, don't. Where most people get into trouble is they think consenting to a search will make it easier on them or that they have nothing to hide and it will shorten the process. Best to put up with the inconvenience, as said earlier, there is only so long that the police may detain you in an investigatory stop (that is where we enter the reasonable amount of time zone again which depends on the circumstances in the individual case.)
A brief search of the caselaw gives multiple examples.

The lander was not going to last more than a few days in the lunar day. NASA gave them some sort of reflector disk that would be used to measure the distance from the earth to the lander, but that was about it.
The whole purpose was to get it landed, to demonstrate that they could do it.
The last 7000m were a bitch.

Yep. And that's why Imperial units should never be used. Just stick to metric. Much easier, many fewer conversion factors. No 1 mile = 5280 feet, or any of that rubbish.

small quibble -- you can be not free to go and also not be under arrest.
Cops can detain you for a reasonable amount of time.
At what moment you're under arrest or even being detained is ... kind of tricky though. Lots of boring and confusing case law on it, and I don't remember the specifics.

And some of these SI countries don't even use decimal points - they use commas.

Personal Safety is a valid reason to decline any invitation to exit your vehicle. You are much safer inside that big metal box when there are metal boxes speeding past you.
Just ask any cop. There are dozens hit and injured and one or more killed making traffic stops on the side of the road in Minnesota alone.
Keep your hands in sight. I prefer to tightly grip the wheel. It gives my hands something to do, and keeps them visible. When you are asked for your ID, point to where it is at, and then slowly reach for it.
Tell the officer what you are going to do before you do it. Give him time to say stop.

Conversely, folks from those countries don't know $h!t about Imperial units. When I was tutoring at a local community college, I had to explain the conversions to those students because their physics homework problems from the book assumed students were familiar with Imperial units.
