I know of a man here in Texas who rejected a plea deal that his lawyer had spent time negotiating, would have given him 2 years probation. He was all pissed off, said he would never plead guilty because he didn't think he was, and he cussed out his lawyer for bringing him such a bad deal. His lawyer just said "ok" and then quietly made sure that his friend, the DA, gave the guy 15 years in the State Pen, which is where he still is today.
Don't turn down a deal, and don't piss off your lawyer but leave him in charge of your case.

The first charges agin' Aunt Becky were "honest services fraud". I got interested in just what the fuck that is, and is has a long and convoluted history.
It is mostly used by the Feds to go after public sector fraud and corruption (you know, state and local officials and politicians on the take), but it is also used for private sector corruption.
There was a controlling case involving similar facts back in the '90s where three members of the Baylor U. basketball coaching staff were charged for fixin' things some players to get on the team.
The Supreme Court greatly limited the scope of what can be charged back in 2010. Scalia quipped the law was so vague the Feds could charge a mayor for using his office to get a good table at a local restaurant ahead of everyone else.
But what Aunt Becky and the rest did here is well within in that scope.

Lori and Felicity had enough money to ensure that their kids were taken care of. Instead, they cheated a system that I suspect a lot of parents look at as "theirs".

This is about a private college. It isn't a case for criminal law. I expect rich people to be able to buy their way and their kids' ways into private colleges. I have no problem with that. That used to be how those colleges survived.
What I have a problem with is all the federal and state government money being funneled to these private colleges. That is a crime. And I also strongly object to the un-Constitutional Title IX bullshit that forced half the crappy teams that these coaches are lying for to even exist. That is a crime, too. But a rich person paying his kid's way into a school is no crime and has nothing to do with meritocracy or equality under the law or anything of the sort.
