Did the FBI Set Up the Alleged "Russian Contacts" of Flynn and Papadopolous and Later Misrepresent Them to a Court as Having Been Arranged by Their Targets Rather Than Themselves?

Item One: George Papadopoulos claims that an "FBI attache" encouraged him to meet with academic Josef Misfud, which would later be claimed to be a "Russian contact."

Saturday evening, Papadopoulos rocked Twitter with claims that "a woman in London, who was the FBI’s legal attache in the U.K." encouraged him "to meet Joseph Mifsud in Rome in March 2016." These new revelations raise fresh concerns that, with the approval of the FBI, foreign governments were meddling in the 2016 election.

He has since updated his claims:

So his series of claims are now:

An FBI attache suggested he contact Misfud.

Misfud, out of the blue, informs him that Russia may have Hillary emails. (Something everyone was speculating about at the time -- hardly some kind of juicy RUSSIAN INTELLIGENCE SECRET.)

He also says that Misfud himself has FBI, not Kremlin, ties.

Then Papadoplous mentions Misfud's gossip about Hillary's emails to an Australian diplomat named Alexander Downer, and Downer reports him to the FBI, and suddenly Papadopoulos is a spy being investigated by the FBI due the prompting of 1, and FBI attache telling him to take a meeting with Misfud, 2, the FBI asset Misfud dropping some random garbage gossip in his lap, and then him telling that to a 3, an Australian diplomat who's also in close contact with the FBI.

Sheesh! The only thing that would make this look more like a frame-up with the FBI providing the garbage gossip it would later claim to be Trafficking in Russian Intel would be if, say, Josef Misfud actually knew the diplomat Downer.

Which... he just might.

Item Two: Stefan Halper, the FBI's Helper, now identified as an FBI covert operative who worked with them on the Russia hoax, was part of setting up the dinner in Flynn's honor and, presumably, seating him across the table from a Russian academic that would later be claimed to be some kind of Russian spy.

Video reports by Catherine Herridge below.

Here's Chuck Ross' report:

A Cambridge University post-graduate student is speaking out about her interactions with Stefan Halper, a former Cambridge professor who was revealed in 2018 as a longtime FBI and CIA informant.

Svetlana Lokhova claims Halper was behind false allegations provided to U.S. intelligence that she attempted to compromise Michael Flynn at an event held at Cambridge in 2014.

Halper is known to have made contact with three Trump campaign aides -- Carter Page, Sam Clovis and George Papadopoulos. His links to Flynn have largely gone unexplored.

Svetlana Lokhova did not get along with Stefan Halper, which is what she says made a dinner invitation to the Cambridge University professor's home in January 2016 all the more peculiar.

He invited her? Of course he did.

"Halper was a lurking presence with a horrible aura -- I avoided him," said Lokhova, a Cambridge post-graduate student who studies Soviet-era espionage.

Lokhova dodged the invitation to Halper's home, which she said was sent to her by Christopher Andrew, a Cambridge professor and official historian for MI5, the British domestic intelligence service. But the past three years have revealed new details about Halper and other activities that went on at Cambridge that have caused Lokhova to question why she was asked to that dinner at Halper's.

For one, a series of stories that appeared in the press in early 2017 heavily implied Lokhova was a Russian agent who tried to suborn Michael Flynn at a dinner hosted at Cambridge on Feb. 28, 2014. Flynn served at the time as director of the Defense Intelligence Agency.

A year after those stories appeared, The Daily Caller News Foundation reported Halper cozied to three Trump campaign advisers, Carter Page, Sam Clovis and George Papadopoulos. In May 2018, Halper was revealed as a longtime CIA and FBI informant, a revelation that led President Donald Trump to accuse the FBI of planting a spy in his campaign. The Republican coined the term "Spygate" to describe the alleged scandal.

After Halper's links to American intelligence were revealed, The New York Times and The Washington Post reported he and another Cambridge luminary, former MI6 chief Richard Dearlove, raised concerns about Lokhova's contacts with Flynn that were subsequently passed to American and British intelligence.

Boy, Halper, the IC's Helper, sure did want this woman who loathed him at a place he had also invited Flynn to! Wonder why!

"What Halper staged is a textbook 'black-op' to dirty up the reputation of a political opponent. He needed an innocuous social event to place Flynn in a room with a woman who was ethnically Russian. I was unlucky he picked me," Lokhova told TheDCNF.

Oh right, that's why.

47 Here it is -- not Mifsud, but another guy:

Mueller said that Papadopoulos told investigators about $10,000 in cash that he received from a foreign national who he suspected to be a foreign spy.

The Daily Caller News Foundation has learned that a man named Charles Tawil gave Papadopoulos $10,000 during a meeting in an Israeli hotel room in July 2017.

Sources familiar with the matter told TheDCNF Tawil flew to the Greek island of Mykonos to meet Papadopoulos and his now-wife, Simona Mangiante Papadopoulos. Tawil invited the pair to Israel, but Mangiante Papadopoulos stayed behind.

Papadopoulos gave the money to an attorney in Greece before traveling back to the U.S., a source told TheDCNF on the condition of anonymity.

Papadopoulos was arrested at Dulles International Airport on a return trip from overseas on July 27, 2017.

Papadopoulos and Tawil met through an Israeli political strategist named David Ha'ivri.
Ha'ivri told TheDCNF said that he introduced the pair "at my own initiative" to facilitate a business deal involving an oil and gas project in the Aegean and Mediterranean seas.

Ha'ivri said that Tawil "is a part time consultant for companies that operate in Africa and Middle East." He believed when he introduced Tawil to Papadopoulos that the former Trump aide had "good connections" in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East.

That's the only thing that gives me pause. Usually, a conspiracy can't keep a secret if more than one person is involved, and even then, it's dicey.

So, it's time to do what the Soviets would do when the KGB would periodically get out of control: they would deploy agents of the GRU to fix all the little red wagons.

We have a Defense Intelligence Agency. Since our DoJ is in cahoots with the FBI and CIA and won't use legal means to restrain them, we should have the military spooks go make a couple thousand people vanish in the night.

109 Caesar - good to see your nic - but I don't agree.

The "op", as described, is quite limited. Long-time "assets" (basically sub-contractors on flexible purchase orders or retainers) are engaged to some fairly minor stuff. A couple people meet a couple of people, or are placed, or attempted to be placed, in the same events with certain people. Not exactly the Double Cross system of WWII.

I can easily see a handful of people involved. And the FISC wouldn't know about any of the mechanics, or any not needed to "make a case" that some American was working with foreign intel, I don't think.

Not a big deal. The point seems that the principals, most of whose names we know, and some of the minor players we are only hearing about (like the FBI attache in the UK Papadop talks about), all knew.

Oh - and obviously a key question is at what point (not whether) did, um, the president know - at least the outlines of things - about an op that is impossible to imagine proceeded beyond a certain point without his OK.

There are a couple problems with that. First, when the FBI hires, they give precedence to those who are married with families. It's an unwritten policy. It goes all the way back Hoover. So, you have a majority of employees dependent on bringing home a regular paycheck. The second issue, is that there are about 40 FBI agents who has stated that they will gladly testify before Congress about these type abuses, BUT will only do so under subpoena because they fear reprisals from the entrenched "deep state" that still inhabits the management levels of the FBI.

Congress has refused these subpoenas for various reasons.

154 OK but this is the problem. Actually its several problems.

1) why do this in the first place unless you're some kind of paranoid Nixon lunatic?
2) Or maybe you have been just doing this every year and its part of a pattern

Are the GOPe really that craven and willing to surrender or are they all just compromised? Did McCain and Romney really want to give up that easily and never fight back or were they stupidly falling for these ops?

This may all go back to the fact that they were worried Hillary's emails would get out. They probably implicate all kinds of people.

Remember no one was ever supposed to know they existed. Their existence came from the Benghazi investigation.

I'm guessing she was collecting money all over the globe and then distributing some of it.

I'm also guessing all this setting up and spying on Trump is just how the JEF and the Clintons did everything, all the time.

179 rhomboid, you're right about the White House being at least aware. I actually buy Samantha Powers's story that someone used her credentials to do the unmaskings. There were operatives in the WH who used the results without her knowledge (maybe with her tacit approval, though that could never be proved). Susan Rice wrote the CYA memo on the way out. People knew.

We'll just agree to disagree on how widespread this was. I think there were people involved who really believed that Trump was a Russian stooge, and if they had to cut a few corners to prove it, they would be justified in the end. I think others believed what they were told because they trusted the chain of command. I think others were on the team just for the thrill of taking down a big name. There were some who knew it was bs, but wanted to be on the Hillary team when it won. Then some were just outright partisan Democrats.

There's a great post out there by a guy named Yaacov Apelbaum that does very deep analysis of the dossier. His ultimate implication is that Hakluyt keeps a database on people and companies for mercenary purposes, and that it was the ur-source for the stories written up by Nellie Ohr and a couple of others, dressed up by Christopher Steele. And Hakluyt continues building their database to this day.

Anything else they claim to be, fiscally conservative, socially conservative, etc. has simply been grafted on to
gain political power to enact the policies of their real base, Big Business, Globalist, MIC, COC, et al.

They cannot be reformed, they cannot be taken over from the inside, and try as he might, Trump cannot turn them into a legitimate political party.

They must be replaced as they replaced the Whigs.

American intelligence and law enforcement agencies, along with the Executive Branch of our government staged and funded a political operation to smear a presidential candidate. In the process, they used U.S. government resources, and not only perpetrated criminal or possibly treasonous acts, but used foreign governments as part of the plot in order to get around restrictions on spying on U.S. persons.

Most of these actors also demonstrably lied to Congress and investigators, which is the basic crime most people swept up by Mueller were jailed on.

But yeah, Barr is covering up the Mueller Report or something.

The Rachel Maddow Show can now report exclusively the existence of Secret Protocols to the Mueller Report containing shocking revelations of the US Government's biggest secrets!

Among the bombshells contained in the Secret Protocols:

- George Washington was secretly the lover of Catherine the Great of Russia and agreed to foment revolution in the British Colonies in order to further the Russian agenda of dividing the British Empire and weakening the EU

- the purchase of Alaska by the United States from Russia was in fact a Trojan horse, with the Russians installing and leaving behind secret Internet access points from which they could infiltrate the U.S. Internet and steal Hillary Clinton's emails

- the administration of FDR was riddled with Russian communist spies and sympathizers who had a substantial effect of US policy [N.B. to producer: let's cut this segment, I don't find this believable at all - RM]

225 205 Good God. I don't know if people even grasp how serious this is.

251 Marcus T., good points.

It's understandable that people get caught up in the details, and the tale, as it is revealed.

But the enormity (word properly used, just for a fun change) of all this is breath-taking.

But back to the details - not sure why so many are saying this involve huge numbers of people and resources. No. Recall how Mid-Year Exam (the Clinton/State Espionage Act cover-up, er, "investigation") was handled? It was a "headquarters special" at the FBI, involving just the "small group" - regular field office activity was mostly avoided. And recall when Brennan took info from the then-head of the British NSA-equivalent - privately, directly - due to the nature of the supposed info.

Intel/investigative operations, even fake ones, can be done on a close-hold basis, and not involve hundreds. And even for the technical aspects - surveillance of, say, Carter Page after the bogus FISA warrant was obtained - the people conducting the surveillance do not get into the weeds of the merits of the operation, not their lane, expertise, or authority.

310 Not buying it. Barry wasn't a criminal mastermind. He didn't turn the FBI from a collection of God Fearing Great Americans to today's bunch in eight years.

He certainly is no criminal mastermind. He's a malevolent retard. He fired every pro-American that popped his head out and advanced all the dregs of society and marxist/maoist/lennininst buddies he could find. He had lots of help, obviously, but it was all at his direction - as was pretty much everything that happened while he was illigitimately occupooping the Oval Office.

Post Cold War ... the FBI needed a threat to justify their existence. They tried the War on Drugs for a while. 9/11 and the Patriot Act gave 'em something better. The Public.

Posted by: Democracy Run Amok at April 05, 2019 01:14 PM (mvp+a)

Nope. This was not anything about the FBI going rogue all on its own. That's almost laughable. This all came from the White House and was coordinated with it. The only thing that let it progress so quickly and deeply was that the GOP couldn't be bothered with trying to stop any of these traitors while they held the House and Senate because, for most of them, they were still scared shitless to do anything to Barky or his lackies to be called "rrraaaaaaciissttssss!!!" by the lowlife leftists. So, the treasonous crowds in all the arms of the Executive branch grew and grew and grew.

Yeah, "suppression" = cleaning up the voter rolls, as required by law, and removing about 90K people who were registered but could not be confirmed (reached at the address in which they were registered under).

NOT suppression. Eliminating 90K registrants whose existence could be used to dump up to 90K fake ballots and not set off concerns that the # votes exceeded the # of people registered to vote.

Stop it. The FBI employs 35,000 people. They are NOT all complicit. The idea that they are is simple and stupid.

In the DIRECTOR level ? Sure. But I don't think we've reached a point where getting out and telling all is a better option than going along IF someone wasn't an active participant.

I'd be quite curious how far down the management chain you'd have to go to actually get to someone that knew and wasn't a participant.

The actual ILLEGAL part of this was very likely constrained to a handful of people - Comey, Strozk, Page, McCabe, etc. They got the whole thing moving, and then the rest of the FBI got involved, likely, without knowing it was based on total BS.

336 Hikaru, I think the reason the FBI accepted the Crowdstrike examination was that it came to the conclusion they wanted, which was "Russians hacked the DNC." If they had given the server to their own lab to do forensic analysis, it might have come to a different conclusion, which would have been . . . inconvenient.

rhomboid, take the Carter Page wiretap example (let alone "two hops," whoever that might have been). If you trusted your chain of command in 2016 that this was a valid counterintelligence surveillance operation, how could you possibly still believe that in 2019? Think about how many people had to have been involved in surveilling all the possible Russian contacts within two hops of Page. That's pretty much the entire campaign staff. Was it just electronics, or did they do physical surveillance of some of them? Did they go through KellyAnne Conway's garbage? Remember that right after Admiral Rogers made the surprise visit to Trump Tower, the transition moved to Bedminster. It's a reasonable inference that bugs were installed in Trump Tower, and I know Priestap and Strzok didn't do that. This thing was huge.

347 I'm reading Papadopoulos's book. I'm about half way through. It's hilarious. George is an ambitious hard striving guy who wants to do big things and when good things happen, like when seemingly important people get real interested in his work on the eastern Med and energy, he claps his hands and jumps for joy. I think I see myself as a naive young man on every page. He learns to be a cynic later, sitting in a cell, after having his civil rights violated by the FBI. I got interested in the book after I heard him on Hannity talking with his wife about how they met. Morons will be interested to note she is smoking hot and seems to be a lot smarter than George. A happy ending. I wish them a long and prosperous life together.
