Trump Appoints Conservative Supporter Stephen Moore to Fed Board; Moore Calls The Fed "The Swamp" And Has Said "Fire the Fed"

This is the Club for Growth guy.

Moore has long been a supporter of Trump, including throughout the 2016 presidential election. He has written approvingly of the president’s criticisms of the Federal Reserve.

"I believe the people on the Federal Reserve Board should be thrown out for economic malpractice," he said in December.

Moore also spoke disapprovingly of Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, noting, "I always thought he was a bad choice. He's been a Fed guy for many years. Donald Trump wanted to drain the swamp. The Fed is the swamp."

He also authored a recent op-ed titled, "Fire the Fed" in which he likened Powell to a misguided pilot who lost his way.

I was told Trump would be appointing his Democrat liberal sister to all of these positions.

I was told this by people who pretend to be geniuses on Twitter and who tell me they're the Ones Who Really Understand Politics and Reality and Stuff.

The left is trying to Education Shame Moore -- I mean, he "only" has a Master's Degree in Economics.

So what? Kessler seems to want to imply that most Fed chairmen are Nobel Memorial Prize winners (something I frankly never heard of before), but of course that's silly. He's talking about one guy that the GOP blocked, not on education grounds, I'm thinking, but for other reasons.

Meanwhile, Trump is boasting, as he does, about last year's 3.1% growth, which he points out is the best yearly growth in 14 years.

But he thinks it could have been better -- that it could have hit 4%, which is his goal -- if the Fed had stopped its aggressive rate-raising sooner.

That is why he wants an ally who thinks like him on the Fed's board, of course.

33 Well ... the Fed is a difficult issue. No one - and I mean NO ONE - wants to do what has to be done. They set the US Dollar on a course of utter destruction and the pain that will be experienced in even trying to save it (and I do mean "save" it) is really of the most serious sort. The piper will eventually have to be paid ... or the dollar will just implode, which is really not the sort of thing anyone really wants to experience. But, the longer we put off that pain (and it's been put off for over a decade, already) the worse it's going to be.

As to Nobel Laureates and their knowledge of monetary systems and abilities to competently manage them ... Long Term Capital Management was run by 3 Nobel Laureates. 'Nuff said on that.

85
The Fed's money printing was the thing that kept the stock from hitting about 0. That and the end of "mark to market" accounting rules.

Basically the Fed printed money (this is just a metaphor -- the Fed creates money digitally. Physical printing does go one, but when Helicopter Ben needed to print hundreds of billions, it was the electronic press) to prop up asset prices.

The system was in the process of resetting. And by rest, I mean deflationary depression. This is the realization that all the bad debt is in fact worthless. Now, the way it works is someone's debt is another asset, and when the debt cant be repaid, the assets are then realized to be worthless.

That was happening. By buying up all that shit with newly created money, the Fed stopped that reset process.

They are now slowly unwinding all that. Slowly.

98 I think the point is that the rate rise is overdue but not THIS overdue.

Posted by: Keto not Beto at March 22, 2019 04:58 PM (9AcAx)

The rate rise is way, way, way overdue.

And it's not just the rate rise. The Fed needs to reduce its balance sheet, which means sucking $4 trillion out of the system, and the federal government has to stop running such a ridiculous deficit.

All three of those things have to happen. SHould have happened years ago. But people are scared shitless to do any one of them. Which means that, eventually, the dollar will just implode, which is going to be something the world has never seen and will be worse than anything anyone can imagine, I would say.

Most people don't realize the real fire we're playing with, here. It's not just fun and games. This is going to be very, very, very bad. And there's no escape. We set the course in 2008 and have just made it worse with every day that we stayed on it.

And I think they were truly surprised when CNBC freaked out when the stock market, necessarily, sold off. Turns out even the Obots at CNBC love their money more than they want to dump Trump.

132 It skeeves me out that economists think inflation is caused by too much economic activity instead of printing too much money

Well its not entirely without false that a hot economy can cause inflation. The more people are hired, the more money is out there buying things, and the more prices will tend to rise to meet this new demand level.

But they missed an important consideration: many, maybe most businesses in America over a certain size were sitting on a pretty big pile of capital waiting for a president that wasn't hostile to them and trying to destroy the economy.

That meant their bottom line looked really good without raising any prices, and helped absorb the cost of hiring new workers without any stress on their earnings. So boards saw a nice upward line rather than any slowing that made them want prices raised.

So... inflation wasn't as big a concern as the economists thought and they should have known that

I was worried all that money printing was going to lead to Weimar here. But, to make a long story short, I realized it isn't, because the system is too rigged and doesn't work like it's supposed to.

Theoretically, the trillions the Fed created, and is only slowing unwinding now, should be catching on fire and causing and an inflationary conflagration.

But it's not because, the banks are basically just vassels of the Fed and are not acting according to market forces. They should be throwing that money out the door like crazy.

But they're not, because the Fed tells them not to, let that money just sit there.

I believe her thesis rested on the fact that it takes x number of units of labor to repay debt. My Google Fu is weak and I cannot find the article, darn it.

Grain of salt and all that.

202 Do you believe in Capitalism ? And if so, why ?

I believe in it because I believe in the individual - right or wrong - steering his own ship in his own perceived best self-interest, and winning or losing based on that. I also believe in the collective wisdom of millions of people - each making their own decisions - arriving at a collectively better result than a small group of elites making those decisions on behalf of the group - and binding them to that decision.

Which is why I call bullshit on any self-proclaimed believer in Capitalism that is also a supporter of the Federal Reserve. It runs counter to everything that make Capitalism the best economic system on Earth. It puts an extremely powerful tool - the regulation of our monetary supply - in the hands of an elite cabal. Do you think that group might ... oh, I don't know ... fucking use that power to their own best interests instead of the interests of the general public ? Why yes ... they just very well may.

So here's some really high brow economic theory for you ... fuck the federal reserve sideways with a barbed-wire wrapped pineapple. The very existence of that institution runs contrary to the notion of not only Capitalism but a Federal Republic as well.

Warning, math ahead.

Miltion's Friendman's famous dictum, "Inflation is everywhere and always a monetary phenomenon"

Equation of Exchange:

MV = PQ.

M is the money supply, V is the "velocity, P is the price level and Q is the economic activity, "real gdp" if you will.

The price level, P, is sort of a aggregate inflation index. The notion of velocity is sort of hard to meaure, so I like to leave MV as one quantity, the monetary momentum (mv looks like a momentum expression to a physics or engineer's eye).

Take the differential, and you get

dP/P = d(MV)/MV - dQ/Q

And that's Uncle Milty's dictum. The Price level will increase if the increase in monetary momentum exceeds the increase in production, real stuff being exchanged.

That can be zero monetary monentum tracks exactly with real economy.

The Fed is not the problem. The contradictory mandates given to the Fed by Congress is the problem.

The Fed should have one main job - protecting the integrity of the dollar. That's it. Price stability. Not steady inflation, but stability.

When Congress gave the Fed a mandate to "fight unemployment" that was the end of reason. That is the real problem.

Permit me to control a nation's money and I care not who makes it's laws. - Roths

Like a lot of shit that Republicans like - it's too much power in the hands of too few. Oh sure - if you could trust the few - it would turn out just fine. But that's really the entire fucking point of Capitalism as well as a Republic ... we can't trust the few. What are you going to do ... bind them via chains of Rules ?

Look around. Rules ain't doing so hot lately.
