Keanu Reaves and Alex Winter Announce They're (Maybe, Hopefully) Going to be Filming Bill & Ted 3 This Summer for a 2020 Release
Plus Dogs and Werewolf Cats
Also, GAINZZZ, brah?

A bit longer in the tooth than you remember Bill & Ted, but that just gives them the chance to time-travel to meet de-aged versions of themselves for a bit.

Plus, men are never too old to be completely stupid.

Also, enjoy this from andycanuck.

Finally, people today were talking about the "lycoi" cat breed, or "werewolf cats." (Lycoi is, they tell me, a Greek (ish?) word for wolf-cat.)

They do look a lot like wolves. Not completely. I mean, they are cats. But enough like werewolves that the name fits.

PS: Day five of this fast almost in the books (it'll be five full days at like 9:30) and it was a SNAP!

I only had one bad night, two nights ago (Tuesday night, day 3).

I stupidly started looking up recipes for when I break fast and spent, I'm not kidding, four hours paging through recipes. I was up until 3 am thinking about food.

Do you know there are lots and lots of recipes for low-carb versions of Chinese food, like fried rice, lo mein, General Tso's chicken and sesame chicken?

And did you know when you're really hungry and saliva is pouring into your mouth you might impulsively blow $50 on a Lodge wok from Amazon? It's true.

But that was the only real tough part of this particular fast, and it was self-inflicted. I avoided that nonsense the last couple of days.

I will not be browsing low-carb Chinese food recipes tonight. But the wok came today, and it made me really hungry.

Gotta tell you: A couple of weeks ago I made Low Carb Chicken Parm, using a recipe a lot like this one, and man: It was good.

Breaded stuff is my downfall on low carb. It's the stuff I convince myself that I can eat because it's "just a few carbs." (PLOT TWIST: No it's not, it's actually a pretty high amount like 8-15 grams per breaded thing.)

But this? It was a nigh-perfect substitute that satisfied my huge cravings for chicken parm -- something I haven't had in years. I gotta recommend you try this, if you're low carb/keto. And few carbs-- just a little from the cheese and the (modestly applied) sauce. Those carbs really can't be avoided.

Really simple and fast to make. I'm not even sure where you'd go wrong in preparing it. It's stupid-easy.

After I break this fast: I'm going to do "Breaded" cod, and maybe put some American cheese on some bigger pieces to make a McDonald's Filet-o-Fish knock-off. And then of course chicken tenders with low-carb honey mustard sauce.

Sometime down the line I'll try my hand at actual KFC style fried chicken. But that's more involved, so the cod and the chicken tenders first.

The various substitutions for real breadcrumbs -- usually crushed pork rinds, sometimes mixed with grated parmesan, sometimes with almond flour (which does have carbs but not too many and it's only part of the breading) -- do seem to work, though I've only tried the chicken parm so far. But it seems like it would work with most stuff.

I'll just repurpose George Costanza's observation: A man on low-carb who is not using the pork-rinds-for-breading trick is not a man.

Seriously, I feel like Pizzaro seeing the Pacific Ocean for the first time. Or whoever it was. (Update: It was Vasco Nunez de Balboa. Apologies to Sr. de Balboa.)

That's how serious this Pork Rinds Breadcrumb sitch is.

Assuming I do not experience what I have usually experienced towards the end of day 5 -- an irrational (full physical symptoms) panic that I'm killing myself and that I must break the fast and eat ALL THE FOOD -- I'll actually hit day six for the first time ever.

Really looking forward to that. I just want to get to day seven this time, and I'll be happy.

(I have one post in the queue but I'm posting this one now to comment in it. The next one I'm going to post and then sign out.)

Some of those hunger strikes are like a relay race. One person doesn't eat for a while then they pass it on to the next guy who doesn't eat for a while.

105 Jim Jefferies, Leftie Aussie talkshow host (like Colbert), gets caught
trying to frame a Jewish anti-Islamicist activist as a white

His show is on Canada's Comedy Network; and on Comedy Central in the States if any of you know of him.

[The video is only 7 mins long and worth seeing how MSM twists interviews like Palin's all those years ago.]

FYI, here's Jefferies' maliciously-edited "comedy" bit at his Twitter feed that, luckily, is being swamped by Avi supporters...

https://twitter.com/jefferiesshow/status/

him, to have an honest debate/interview. And as a bonus, Jefferies also falsely implied that the interview was done just after the Christchurch attacks when the interview was actually three months ago.

okay that's a good idea but here's the thing:

People don't understand with a low carb diet that I can have all the steak I want. And I do try to have it every month, sometimes twice a month.

BUT... you don't miss the things you CAN eat. You miss the things you CAN'T eat.

Eat a steak? Great idea. Eat cheeseburgers with bacon? Great idea.

But... see... people on low carb do that day-in, day-out.

Humans crave novelty. Hamburgers are yummy but if you have them three times in a week, they're not yummy any more.

That's why low-carbers have to resort to tricks to fake the taste and texture of stuff they can't eat.

I can eat all the salmon, fish, steak, pork, chicken etc. I want.

But you get really tired of just eating broiled or fried meat.

119 I lost weight and have kept it off with 2 meals a day with 16-18 hour 'fast' periods. The science for this is pretty good and (men can often do well with 1 meal a day from what I read). And I've read that a lot of folks do a 30-some hour fast 1 or 2 times a week including women with success.

I suppose once you have the body working to burn fat to fuel your activity the longer fasts also work just fine. When I first read someone say they only ate one meal a day to control weight that seemed radical and now I'm like "oh yeah it totally works, but presented without the explanation about sweeping out insulin it seemed radical" My fear with trying long fasts myself is that I tend to eat too much too fast if I get over hungry and then I feel like crap for several hours from the over stretched stomach.

I don't get the sodium thing. Maintaining blood osmolarity is a critical function of the kidneys.

You ingest sodium chloride, you pee out sodium chloride next time you pee. You drink a lot of water, you pee out a lot of water next time you pee. What's the problem?

It's not like lead salts, that are deposited in bone, or lipids that can be deposited as atherosclerotic plaque. Those are effectively immobilized. But salt? Pffft.

I think most folks have a jaundiced view of fasting because of the easy availability of food in modern civilization. It's just a few steps away in your fridge 24 hours a day.

But for hundreds of thousands of years when we were hunter/gatherers it was completely physiologically normal to go a few days without food. Our bodies evolved to accommodate that. And our bodies are still comfortable doing it, it's our modern cravings that get in the way.

I sound like a fasting missionary. Lol.

136 Not really down any weight, but my pants feel looser even out of the dryer.

I'm switching up my lifting routine. I'm going to do 20-rep squats twice a week for the next six weeks, plus normal sets of 3x5 of bench, press, row, and deadlift. Unfortunately work is about to hit overdrive with the budget coming up, so from now until probably June I'm going to be busy.

In personal development, I've tried to get into a routine of using the Duolingo phone app when I wake up and right before bed. I figure that when I'm barely awake, I won't try to "translate" the language as much and will actually force my brain to use it naturally. I've also been picking on my mandolin in the evening and on weekends, and I've been fiddling around with some programming stuff to try and build new skill sets.

If I were your typical Nigerian, who loves meat, lo carb would be a no brainer . But I'm a wierdo and it wouldn't be sustainable for me.

Posted by: chique d'afrique at March 21, 2019 07:04 PM (9hauA)

148 I started a low carb paleo-esque diet with morning spin classes and afternoon TRX training in mid Jan. I've lost about 25 pounds so far.
TRX is hard as hell. I started at zero strength with weak little baby muscles and 235 lb body weight. Since with TRX you use your own body weight for resistance. That sucked and I couldn't even complete some of the moves. But as I lose weight I'm also getting stronger. So, at first I couldn't do the planking stuff where your feet are in straps, you're doing a hand stand and your piking etc... My core, butt, abs, just weren't there. Now I'm able to do it but I'm tearing up my core each night. It hurts to roll over in bed. With legs, at first I couldn't do the one-legged lunge or one-legged burpee things but once I could I work my legs quickly into twitching muscle exhaustion with a few reps. Same with triceps and everything else. So even though I'm getting stronger I'm still pretty much crawling out of the room at the end of class.
I look forward to the day that working out makes me feel stronger and not weaker.

Six or eight months ago, when I was doing this more consistently, I was at 17% bodyfat (which is good for me).

But then I just stopped exercising and dieting and went back up to 22%.

Also lost a few pounds of the muscle I'd added through atrophy, which I think is a factor in the bodyfat going up so much.

When I started this, a few years ago, I was in really bad shape. I was at, I dunno, 30% bodyfat. I'm not sure. In a year I dropped that to 20%, then started doing more extended fasts to drop it down. I wanted to get to 15% but never did.

170 In personal development, I've tried to get into a routine of using the Duolingo phone app when I wake up and right before bed.

I'm studying several languages on Duolingo, and I find it's most effective to study a given language for about an hour at a time. After I'm done, I'm mumbling the language to myself, as phrases and sentences well up unbidden.

I usually switch off between languages each day, because it's surprisingly difficult to turn off one language and start studying another right away.

Taking off from work is fun.

don't think retiring will be the same.

Biggest thing about retiring I would warn anyone about is: It's f**king boring.

yeah even if you've got tons to do, it's not the same.

It does take a while to catch up. Maybe 2-3 years. then one day you find you're BORED out of your skull and are having to work to find something interesting to do.

Have a plan when you retire and not just about money or your health. Have a plan on how to fill you're days. If you have a close family that will help. If not or they're all gone then be prepared.

I've also been picking on my mandolin in the evening and on weekends, and I've been fiddling around with some programming stuff to try and build new skill sets.

but my macros are all wrong, I know. I do like... I dunno, 60% protein? maybe 66%? The fat I get is from cheese, sometimes sour cream, or the fat in the meat itself.

Some used to stuff them with cocktail shrimp. They are even good sliced with pepper. They key is getting them ripe or getting them hard and putting them in a brown paper bag. That ripens them quicker and keeps them from going bad as quickly it seems.

just pointing out there are no comparisons of long term vegetarian societies vs long term carnivous societies in terms of health

also vegetables (all plants) are full of anti-nutrients that the body must overcome during digestion, ofyen we fo not which leads to poor absorption of nutrients

when you think about it, basically the reputation that veggies and fruits have for being healthy doesn't really stack up

332 i don't know if protein really turns into glucose... someone was saying the protein to glocose thing is demand-dependant and that it would not all automatically convert. I think they also said that it takes a lot of energy to turn protein into glucose, so it's not really the same as having carbs.

Posted by: ace at March 21, 2019 07:14 PM (PbpT7)

Protein can be metabolized to produce glucose in a process called gluconeogenesis, but IIRC that only occurs under starvation conditions, as glucose is one of the major sources of fuel for the brain. (Which is why PET imaging of the brain uses 18F-deoxyglucose, which closely resembles glucose.)

The source is irrelevant. Sugar (sucrose) hydrolyzes into glucose and fructose (the constituent monosaccharides) under acidic conditions, as in, e.g., the stomach. It's a classic undergraduate lab experiment (inversion of sucrose. See, e.g., https://tinyurl.com/y2za6tuz.)
