Seb Gorka on the Pseudo-Conservatives
The Bulwark's Latest Declaration of Eternal Conservative Principles: Conservatives Are Ginning Up Fake Fears About Socialism

Blistering.

[The Subsidized Fake Conservatives] moved from gullible conservative donors to taking money from hardcore left-wing billionaires. They rebranded themselves under a new masthead, and as The Bulwark--sounds manly right?--and decided the best thing is to outdo the Daily Beast and Buzzfeed in anti-Trump sentiment. No more pretending to be the heirs of Kirk and Chambers while enjoying tony parties in Adams Morgan with their MSNBC, NPR, and Obama Administration pals. No, they will rebuild America by giving in to their inner Arianna Huffington and unleashing their hidden Glenn Thrush.

Although I’ve been through the wringer, having lived through the consequences of working in the White House and all that entails in terms of media "coverage," the results of their targeting have surprised even me.

Whether it's attacking Salena Zito for not being a "real American" (I guess because her name isn’t WASP-y enough), or mocking the appearance of a veteran conservative commentator who just ended chemotherapy, these people who say--and this isn't a put on, they actually had this on their masthead--that they are "Conserving Conservatism" have sunk as low as it is possible to go. Or at least that's what I thought until this week.

...

The day after the outrageous calumny [against Victor Davis Hanson] was dropped, I attended the launch of the good professor’s book at the D.C. satellite of his professional home, the Hoover Institution...

At the end of the superb event, the pieces all fell into place. As I said my goodbyes, the gentle professor turned to me and said: "You know, Trump is the one thing standing between them and America going socialist."

As if by prophecy, the next article the Bulwark posted was: "Is Socialism Really that Big of a Threat?"

But Gorsuch.

But the economy.

But the border.

But abortion.

But anti-semitism.

But... capitalism?

The Defenders of Eternal Conservative Principles sure are willing to toss a lot of ancient wood on the bonfire to keep the anti-Trump fires burning.

The Bulwark's article actually says socialism is NBD, really:

But upon closer inspection the right's bashing of socialism rings a little hollow--and not just because of Gorka's bombast. Yes, AOC's proposals are misguided but they are unlikely steps toward a planned economy, show trials, or the gulag system.

"Misguided"? And then come the claims that just because she's advocating socialism, it doesn't mean she'll bring about the bad parts of socialism.

Hey, remember when True Conservatives believed that all the parts of socialism were the bad parts of socialism? Now apparently a lot of socialism is good, as long as we stay away from the bad parts, like totalitarianism.

Which, as history tells us, can be easily extracted from socialism, and in fact is successfully extracted from it almost every time it's tried.

That's sarcasm, if I'm not laying it on thick enough. Every socialist says "This time, we'll implement socialism without the show trials, gulags, and political prisons!"

And they tend to be liars on that point.

The left made the same claims about Obama, that he was merely introducing some incremental changes and beginning much-needed discussions, not pushing the country towards socialism.

The Eternal Defenders of Sacred Conservative Doctrine used to dispute the left on that point.

Now they join them in apologetics for socialism.

Well, I'm sure the writers at The Bulwark don't have to worry about show trials -- they've let the left know they are trustworthy and useful allies who, if they are to be eaten at all, should certainly be eaten last.

Update: A friend tells me that the Bulwark Remnant (including the #SalonHot25) has exhausted even the patience of the rest of the NeverTrumpers, who now despise them. Partly maybe for embarrassing them by giving the game away (in as much as the Bulwark guys don't even hide the fact that they're partisan Democrats now), and partly because the Bulwark Remnant is always attacking the regular NeverTrumpers as sell-outs not sufficiently pro-Democrat enough to defeat the Drumpfenkoenig.

Keep on telling us how good you are at politics and the art of persuasion, guys.

I'm going just start calling these guys "The Winners Club," because that's all they do, they win. And they club cancer survivors and pro-lifers.

39 William Kristol was allegedly a stalwart of the conservative intellectual.

Irving Kristol, his father, may have been the original "neo-con". Irving Kristol wrote a rather blistering and wistful book about leaving the Left, called "Former Friends".

And this, is the heritage of the Jewish intellectual in America.

Sometimes a pretend conservative, sometimes a social liberal. Whatever.

This may sound truly anti-semitic to some, but the orientation of the Jewish intellectual in America (and Europe) is to be the cosmopolitan, bigger than a citizen of a country. They look at things as being kind of "one world", perhaps out of the historic fear of the pogrom, and the historic fear of a militant Christian.

Barry Goldwater was ancestrally Jewish, although he was a practicing Episcopalian. Toward the end of his life, with his second wife, he sometimes waxed liberal about certain topics.

Sebastian Gorka has not finished paying for his support of Trump, although he may think he is. And neither has Victor Hanson.
The Soviet - style denunciations will continue and intensify. All the bitter sarcasm in the world will not stop the mewling quims at The Bulwark or The Bulwinkle, or whatever they call it.
William Buckley must be SPINNING in his grave about what has happened to National Review.
Buckley would have held his nose and supported Trump, because he understood at a basic philosophical level, that someone who actually supports Conservatives in deed, is preferable to the oral support by the fakers, who happen to have the right pedigree.

88 Great post, Ace, and I look forward to reading Gorka's whole piece. There is something in here I find extremely troubling because it means I have to question what I always assumed to be the origins of the GOPe/NeverTrump crowd.

The conventional wisdom, as far as I know, is that this co-opting of the Republican Party by non-conservatives (or, at most generous, semi-conservatives) began in earnest under Reagan. In that era, the Democrats - who used to (at least on paper) be for immigration control, blue collar advocacy, etc. - got consumed by actual hardcore Leftists and outright communist sympathizers. This is where the "Reagan Democrats" came from - they didn't necessarily love conservatism and often were not conservatives in a practical sense, but they viewed the Soviet apologetics or outright Soviet advocacy of the increasingly corrupt Democrat party as going too far and forcing them out.

I don't know if this is actually true, or if it is simply not true anymore. This statement from the Cuckshed puts any legitimacy that argument has in the current context into the dustbin. From the post:
But upon closer inspection the right's bashing of socialism rings a little hollow--and not just because of Gorka's bombast. Yes, AOC's proposals are misguided but they are unlikely steps toward a planned economy, show trials, or the gulag system.

If the roots of the GOPe/NeverTrump cowards was actually "not exactly a conservative, but not down with communism" it certainly doesn't apply anymore.

Was it ever true? If it was, this demonstrates - in rich, vibrant color - what happens when petty personal luxuries, desire to "belong" and the lust for influence and other power-by-proxy schemes systematize.

You may note that the Cuckshed dropped their "Conservatism Conserved" tagline. There can be no wonder as to why.

Wrong. Her proposals inevitably, ineluctably lead to a planned economy, show trials, the gulag system, secret police, walls (yes!) with barbed wire and machine guns.

Why? Because socialists' ideas DO. NOT. WORK. And when they fail to such an extent that even relentless propaganda can't pretend otherwise, the socialists have to find scapegoats. Enter the "counter-revolutionaries sabotaging" their great policies. THAT'S why things suck!

Then come the show trials, the gulags, and of course, the secret police to sniff out said counter-revolutionary saboteurs.

Along with them comes the wall with barbed wire, etc. to keep people from fleeing the socialist paradise.

The progression follows as night follows day.

Which is interesting in its own right. If you take a step back and look at key position points in Trump's platform, it is genuinely what *would* have been considering a centrist platform before everyone went insane. If Trump were running with this exact platform in 1972, he probably could have run in either party.

Platform planks:
1) Tight immigration control (bipartisan issue in the 70s, probably with more Democrat (labor) support at the local level)
2) Regulatory regime rollbacks (Republican issue)
3) Trade rationalization (Democrat issue)
4) Tax cuts (Republican issue)
5) Tax loophole closure (Democrat issue)
6) Military rebuild (Republican issue)
7) Medical industry reform (this didn't really exist, but if it did it would have been a Democrat issue)
Abortion (Republican issue)

Trump is a true centrist in what we can probably call the "classical" sense on the pre-madness 20th century. That this platform - a platform that is, if we're being fair, pretty centrist and milquetoast - has resulted in this reaction shows you how radical and insane the Left *and* the Center have become.

Then communism naturally and inevitably is the way of things where each gives of his ability to those of heir need. Imagine all the time you'll have to spend on social media too!

And we bear the brunt of a lot of their medical costs as pharmaceutical companies up prices in America to make up for price controls in Canada and Europe.

Right, that's part of the evils of trade deals: countries with socialized medicine refusing to allow sales there unless the companies cut their prices to the bone. And where do they make up those lost profits? Here at home.

Posted by: Nick in Tallahassee at March 19, 2019 03:50 PM (wGbBR)

===========

They're taking Beto mania seriously, so I would expect Democrats to really try.

Cornyn, though, doesn't have the same problems as Cruz within the Republican Party and should probably see a relatively easy re-election.

Castro is also a funny looking dude, and probably won't generate the same kind of enthusiasm from big money donors, especially when the prospect is to get rid of Cornyn instead of Cruz.

So, a real effort, but not a gangbusters effort like with Beto.

Cornyn will win by at least 10 points, but we'll have so many stories about how Texas is turning blue no matter what.

Conservatism is the centrist position, because it's basically, "hey, don't fuck with things too much!" The left was anchored by progressivism, while the right was anchored by libertarianism. Blue collar conservatives went Dem for several decades after WWII because of the New Deal and the distrust of big business. White collar conservatives went GOP out of fear of communism and because they liked seeing their retirement accounts grow. Since the 90s and the fall of the USSR those allegiences started to slip.

All laws are force. The way to evaluate any law's legitimacy or desirability is to ask yourself "is this law worth putting a gun to someone's head to enforce?"

Because all law comes down to having armed agents of the government pull their guns on you to ensure compliance or to take you into custody. Even seemingly innocuous but annoying laws like running a nail salon without a cosmetology license. Keep doing it after being cited a couple of times and a platoon of armed cops WILL come into your shop to shut you down.

If you're worried about socialism (as an economic system) nuking the USA, I suggest that you worry about our CURRENT level of spending and borrowing. This profligate spending and astronomical debt will destroy us as surely as socialism will.

When there are good laws to protect the individual, capitalism can thrive (within our borders). When foreign nations want to trade, we decide if it is good for us, including for our workers. WallStreet took control and wants slave labor in China, for their profit.

Globalism wants global economic control, by way of the 20 too big to fail/jail banks. They will control monetary policy and punish nations at their will. USA would not be allowed to favor Christian ideology over commies or jihadists ... and AmericaFirst is their enemy.

Theoretical Socialism doesn't exist, just like the Utopian Communism arguments are useless distractions. Americans have to decide if they want liberty or cheap tech toys, but tyranny. (cheap because even "global capitalism" means our blue collar workers end up making the same as the China blue collar worker. Not what we signed up for.)

Let Freedom Reign.

Ditto. My parents are working on retiring and they were going over their plan with me. I pointed out that they could accelerate the whole thing if they were willing to move out of CO, as the Front Range has become very expensive.

My mom's eyes went wide at the suggestion. A few days later she told me, "I had never considered moving. I can't stop thinking about it. With what this place has become, it makes more sense than ever. I can't stand what is happening and I never stopped to think, 'I can leave.'"

Sad. Really, truly sad. I am in the same boat, though. I am building an exit plan.

388 Conservatism is the centrist position, because it's basically, "hey, don't fuck with things too much!" The left was anchored by progressivism, while the right was anchored by libertarianism. Blue collar conservatives went Dem for several decades after WWII because of the New Deal and the distrust of big business. White collar conservatives went GOP out of fear of communism and because they liked seeing their retirement accounts grow. Since the 90s and the fall of the USSR those allegiences started to slip.

I think a major problem with contemporary conservatism is that it has more of a sea anchor than a real anchor.

A real anchor - like, say, the freaking Constitution - is an absolute point around which (or a lens through which) you can weigh your positions and decisions.

A sea anchor, though, holds a relative position instead of an absolute one. The conservative sea anchor means that the goal becomes to preserve/conserve the world as it is *now* - not as it should be according to first principles. Every time the Left moves the ball down the field, the sea-anchor conservatives go from fighting it to *defending* it against further Leftward moves.*

*Not the Cuckshed Crew. They're just leftists.

Reds bleat about oppression, but the whole purpose of society is to oppress some people. The question is: which people?

A well-ordered society oppresses criminals, perverts, ne'er-do-wells, and other antisocial types.

A leftist-run society, by failing to oppress the above, instead by default oppresses decent, hard-working, law-abiding taxpayers.

Look at SF. Who is oppressed? The bums crapping on the sidewalks and shooting up, or the decent people having to navigate the feces and needles on their way to work to help pay for programs for the bums?

Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at March 19, 2019 03:24 PM (I2dne)

Not quite so - Republicans weren't "conservative" by modern notions as a party pre-Reagan. The country-club set was just as offended by an actor taking over and facing down the Soviets rather than having detante as nowdays they are over Trump. And they let everyone know it, but like then they were ridden out of the party since Reagan won. That's when media started to become exclusively D, and then after Reagan moved on they came back to try and work their way into the party again as "neocons" or whatever. But the hatred of the middle american base and clear talk and common sense remained.

The Bulwark set is just the same fungus in the intellectual set. Buckley had his principles, these dudes never had any. They parroted him when he ran things, now they just parrot what gets them paid.

The only question will be who gets them first...

437 It quite possibly drove National Review quite mad when there anybody but Trump issue had absolutely zero impact.

Even when NR was around with Buckley, its real influence was very limited outside their own circle. They followed the lead of other people, and if they didn't nobody cared.

438 "When we defeat an enemy, we tend to their wounded and treat captives humanely. But traitors? Traitors we hang"

Oh fun times - today a NeverTrumper lectured me to support GOP Cucks for the good of the party. Like a member of MoveOn pushing #MeToo. Not a shred of self-awareness.

439 A few weeks ago I did parody of cucks writing articles like "Socialism: is it really so bad?". And now the Bulwark has it as an op-ed.

441 "...a planned economy, show trials, or the gulag system."

Yeah, the green new deal is literally a planned economy step. Rather, it is a HUGE step. She wants the government to control the means of production of energy, which is among the largest and most essential sectors in the world economy. And for that matter, the means of production for food. What, you think being able to say you can't grow cows isn't control? She also wants the government to control the means of production of education, and the means of production of health. Isn't that like, 50% of the non-government economy?

The green idiots have been calling for the ability to prosecute global warming deniers. Is this not pretty much aligned with the show trials concept? The microaggressions, the enemies lists from the sorts at SPLC and similar. It isn't headed in that direction? Don't be fucking naive. You give in and they'll find the reason to prosecute you, don't worry.

And the gulag system? Socialism is that from top to bottom. The ONLY difference is how obedient you are. If you're really obedient, they'll only hold you down with a thin rope, if you aren't, it becomes guns and a thick chain. The people who became nuclear engineers in the Soviet Union? People who had good scores in certain areas were forcibly assigned that work. Their preferences and interests didn't matter, and neither will yours. You won't be working for yourself or your own interests. You won't own yourself either. You would be a slave to a state that looks at you much the same way as a rancher views his cattle. When you're good and healthy, you'll be cared for. When you become troublesome, you become hamburger.

In any case, the bad effects of leftists and socialism are the above, but socialism itself simply can't work. The closest thing to socialism that can work is a market economy. Not very close you say? Yep. And yet it is still the closest thing. Socialism is just that bad.
