He just knew that this was the role to give him a career. He and his agent schemed and finagled and finally got him into an audition. He worked on it as if his whole career depended on it, which it did. And he nailed it.

I have been thinking long about this, 2 or 3 weeks ago I was convinced it was about to happen. Now... first, there's a natural reluctance to take any risk when one can get by without it, ESPECIALLY in Hispanic cultures. They are experts at finding reasons as to why nothing should be done today, if done at all, it should be done manana.
But also, I suspect among the serious thinkers there is a growing realization that no matter what course of action is followed, hundreds of thousands of ordinary people are about to die. It's too late for any other outcome. Anyone who steps in now is going to get blamed for that, so its better politically to stand back, do nothing and wait for the dying to start. And only *then* will it look good for outsiders to swoop in as rescuers.
I now think no one outside will lift a finger until the death toll crosses 100,000. But that will probably happen a lot sooner than you think.

howard morris, who played ernest t. bass on the "andy griffith show", wasn't a hillbilly in real life. he was born in the bronx, jewish, got started with carl reiner and joined him on sid caesar's "your show of shows", was a prolific voice actor on 100's pf cartoons and a successful director on numerous shows, in eluding the pilot for "get smart" (he actually directed more episodes of andy griffith than he appeared in as bass. he also played in several mel brooks movies. and apparently was a generally nice guy.

I read a really interesting interview with RDJ about getting Iron Man. The studio basically said fuck no we're not even going to give him an audition. He'd had the troubles and all that.
He just knew that this was the role to give him a career. He and his agent schemed and finagled and finally got him into an audition. He worked on it as if his whole career depended on it, which it did. And he nailed it.

I think it's written in a lot of his contracts that he gets to keep certain watches used as props. He also auctions many of the high-dollar ones for charity. A $50k watch owned by RDJ and worn in a movie becomes a $100k watch.

We have a USMC why (apart from one or two MEUs to evacuate embassies, and those guys will stay busy!)? What's the purpose of the Army? No continental threats to the US, and the borders can be secured easily without all the irrelevant training and expensive hardware. Even the Navy will need to be looked at. Can't avoid "intervention" all that easily if you keep the freedom of navigation and sea LOCs as national interests, those can easily evolve to include non-maritime actions.

It's funny how fake Rolexes are an industry unto themselves. You can pay more than $1000 for a fake that is so authentic that it even has the miniscule laser-inscribed crown at the bottom of the crystal that is supposed to be the sure way to distinguish a real one from a knock-off. Yup, quality counts and I really like EcoDrives. In my experience, you really don't need to spend more than $200-$300 on a watch unless you're making a statement. There is a huge amount of great quality in that range.

Not really true. Modern replicas of Rolex and Omega are indistinguishable without removing/dissecting the movements.
Virtually all automatic movements "sweep" and 28,800 beats per hour, some at 26,400 or 21,(something). Quarts "tick" at once per second (some do more). The Seiko spring-drive is the only one that truly "sweeps".

Although that is literally true, "Lucifer" is more properly translated as "Morning Star" (Morgenstern in German) The use dates from that time early in the Roman Empire when gnostic religions commonly identified Stars with various angels, and worshipped them. The Morning Star (aka the planet Venus) was the biggest and brightest of all of them, and so was held to be the embodiment of the most powerful of all of the angels.
It sounds weird to our ears, but the ancients would almost certainly get a big laugh out of our new Global Warming religion.

I've read a very good book which has as it's thesis the idea that the incredible expansion of England to the status of World Power, as well as the simultaneous Industrial Revolution, were both direct consequences of the Glorious Revolution of 1688, which isn't generally paid much attention to these days. (That's the one that placed William of Orange on the throne)
What it really did was cut off the Monarchy's ability to fiddle with and control commerce, which could now expand unchecked, as the new growing business interests were in full control of Parliament. The Monarchy and the old nobility were neutralized, as was the Church. The old constraints on business - Royal Charters and the like - were mostly swept away.
The industrial revolution first exploded throughout England, powered by James Watt's Steam Engine, and as it became obvious how much wealth it was generating, it quickly spread throughout Europe.

You know what amtrak uysed to do to deal with the fall change? They used to stop the trains wherever they were and sit for an hour until the clock change caught up with the printed schedule. No joke. Just stop all the trains at 2am when the change occurred - wherever they were!! - and sit there. That's some top-notch government thinking, there. You can't find any better example anywhere.
The entire thing was conceived before the electric light, and needs not continue any longer. Yes, it sucks to get up in the darkness, work all day, and come home in darkness. Get out of the office for lunch and take a walk or something.

And in deep winter the days in the northeast are so short that it doesn't matter where you switch the clocks one hour to. Changing the clocks is one of the most retarded things humans have ever even thought of doing. It was Ben Franklin's dumbest idea. Soy has lots of protein. It's also got lots of estrogen.

protein is an incomplete protein. Doesn't build muscle or anything.
Needs to be combined with more protein to do that, which they
conveniently don't tell you.

That's true of a lot of plants, for example you have to put beans and rice together to make a complete protein. But soybeans are actually one of the few that have all the amino acids humans need. But yeah, I like steak and bacon and bbq. A lot.

CS Lewis was writing about this stuff back in the 1950s. He spent his entire adult life in academia, so naturally he saw it close-up as it was being born. He didn't call it post-modernism, but it's obvious that's what it was. He referred to its promulgators as 'debunkers' which sounds a bit odd until you realize he's talking about deconstructionists and deconstructionism. He mapped out pretty much exactly where it would lead. See his book 'The Abolition of Man'. It's quite prophetic.

I am not a watch guy, but many like them as they are one of the only traditional male accessories.
As for fake Rolexes, I don't see the point at all. I had one as a yute and when someone asked about it, being honest, I told them it was fake. Most have the wrong type of dial action and weigh way too little to be real. It would suck to get mugged for a $50 watch. Then again, I bet most crooks can tell them right away.

That's actually true. Explorers could always find their latitude with a sextant but the only way to know longitude was to know what time it was.

I like watches and own a lot of them. Upthread, I said that for my money, there's no real quality reason to spend more than few hundred dollars on a watch. A cheap Timex will run forever and keep time.
But watches are a very personal accessory and if you have the money, go nuts. After a fairly low starting point for quality, it becomes entirely about preference.

When I was stationed in Turkey, I bought a Turkish "Train" pocker watch. It was modeled after the watch that the Turk government bought back at the turn of the century to give to the people who ran the trains. Back then Turk watches sucked, but Russian pocket watches were excellent. Once everyone had reliable timepieces, the trains began to run on time.
Its a cool pocket watch...still keeps good time.

Agreed. A Rolex is great if you have the money because it is really jewelry and will retain it's value. My favorite watch was a military wind up I used in training. You would have to wind that thing every couple of days or you were out of luck.

Some guys can pull off an earring, I don't see that on me. I had a wedding ring for a while but then I didn't. And I don't wear watches anymore. Just checked desk drawer and I still have a Swiss Army watch. I could get a battery for it, I guess.

This isn't an unreasonable thought. I wrote a lot of little comics and stories in my high school years, stuff which not long after would show up in films and books. When I was young, for example, I wrote a lot of the concepts and ideas that later showed up in Akira.
Nobody was stealing from me, they didn't even know I existed. They just had ideas that I shared, creative thoughts and concepts that arose simultaneously or soon afterward. My friends used to tell me I had the worst luck ever, because even if I managed to get any of it published everyone would think I was ripping them off.

There's only one highway that controls access to the entire southern half of Venezuela, for example, and it has very little military presence. Brazil could take it in 2 or 3 days without firing a shot, if it wanted to. But then they'd be responsible for feeding the people there, and I think that's the real problem.

They also *Ahead Of Time* made the decision that if things got Really Bad, they could issue an Apology after the Fact to explain why they didn't do anything, and that would make it All Right.
I say this as literal Fact - Clinton and his team had already written the apology for doing nothing before the slaughter had even started.

The key was Cultural arrogance.
