10 The Dems are not the party of antisemitism. They're the party of hate, period. The focus of their hateful ire changes from time to time, but everything they do is predicated on hate. 108 That last part is the distinction. There are plenty of conservative losers, but they tend not gravitate toward the "burn it all down" side of things.
Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at March 11, 2019 11:22 AM (I2dne)

The liberal loser has decided that his failings are all somebody else's fault, and that they know everything worth knowing. They think that if we all would believe in unicorn government and cargo cult economics, there wouldn't even be losers. "It's all your fault!"

The conservative loser blames simple bad luck, or admits he made poor choices at critical times. The failure isn't due to some grand conspiracy of the world being rigged against them. "Meh. Shit happens."

I have been thinking long about this, 2 or 3 weeks ago I was convinced it was about to happen. Now... first, there's a natural reluctance to take any risk when one can get by without it, ESPECIALLY in Hispanic cultures. They are experts at finding reasons as to why nothing should be done today, if done at all, it should be done manana.

But also, I suspect among the serious thinkers there is a growing realization that no matter what course of action is followed, hundreds of thousands of ordinary people are about to die. It's too late for any other outcome. Anyone who steps in now is going to get blamed for that, so its better politically to stand back, do nothing and wait for the dying to start. And only *then* will it look good for outsiders to swoop in as rescuers.

I now think no one outside will lift a finger until the death toll crosses 100,000. But that will probably happen a lot sooner than you think.

186 135- Yeah, Bogey was too sympathetic at that point for audiences to accept him as the villain (despite the fact that he was always the villain in his early films). However, it's the uncertainty that sells the movie. Grahame grows more and more uneasy about Bogart while he starts revealing his odd and violent behavior. Even at the end, when the truth comes out, he realizes that he could potentially have been a murderer (killing Grahame out of jealousy) and their relationship ends. Great movie.

I think it's written in a lot of his contracts that he gets to keep certain watches used as props. He also auctions many of the high-dollar ones for charity. A $50k watch owned by RDJ and worn in a movie becomes a $100k watch.

He's still done well but all those missing years. Kinda sad. Oh - and when will the defense budget be cut 70% to match the hilarious "non-intervention" "principle"? We have a USMC why (apart from one or two MEUs to evacuate embassies, and those guys will stay busy!)? What's the purpose of the Army? No continental threats to the US, and the borders can be secured easily without all the irrelevant training and expensive hardware. Even the Navy will need to be looked at. Can't avoid "intervention" all that easily if you keep the freedom of navigation and sea LOCs as national interests, those can easily evolve to include non-maritime actions.

You would ask a South African to do something and they would say "Just now" and you would wait, expecting them to do it right then. But they would be gone. It was, easily, one of the most annoying things in the world. And after you realized what they actually meant it was even more annoying.

I almost think that South Africa got what it deserved with black rule just to punish them for that awful, nasty, annoying habit of abusing the meaning of the phrase "Just now".

346 305 Are we really going to pretend that the Industrial Revolution would have happened without the Enlightenment? "

I've read a very good book which has as it's thesis the idea that the incredible expansion of England to the status of World Power, as well as the simultaneous Industrial Revolution, were both direct consequences of the Glorious Revolution of 1688, which isn't generally paid much attention to these days. (That's the one that placed William of Orange on the throne)

What it really did was cut off the Monarchy's ability to fiddle with and control commerce, which could now expand unchecked, as the new growing business interests were in full control of Parliament. The Monarchy and the old nobility were neutralized, as was the Church. The old constraints on business - Royal Charters and the like - were mostly swept away.

The industrial revolution first exploded throughout England, powered by James Watt's Steam Engine, and as it became obvious how much wealth it was generating, it quickly spread throughout Europe.

Just stop all the trains at 2am when the change occurred - wherever they were!! - and sit there. That's some top-notch government thinking, there. You can't find any better example anywhere.

The entire thing was conceived before the electric light, and needs not continue any longer. Yes, it sucks to get up in the darkness, work all day, and come home in darkness. Get out of the office for lunch and take a walk or something.

CS Lewis was writing about this stuff back in the 1950s. He spent his entire adult life in academia, so naturally he saw it close-up as it was being born. He didn't call it post-modernism, but it's obvious that's what it was. He referred to its promulgators as 'debunkers' which sounds a bit odd until you realize he's talking about deconstructionists and deconstructionism. He mapped out pretty much exactly where it would lead. See his book 'The Abolition of Man'. It's quite prophetic.

As for fake Rolexes, I don't see the point at all. I had one as a yute and when someone asked about it, being honest, I told them it was fake. Most have the wrong type of dial action and weigh way too little to be real. It would suck to get mugged for a $50 watch. Then again, I bet most crooks can tell them right away.

I like watches and own a lot of them. Upthread, I said that for my money, there's no real quality reason to spend more than few hundred dollars on a watch. A cheap Timex will run forever and keep time.

But watches are a very personal accessory and if you have the money, go nuts. After a fairly low starting point for quality, it becomes entirely about preference.

When I was stationed in Turkey, I bought a Turkish "Train" pocker watch. It was modeled after the watch that the Turk government bought back at the turn of the century to give to the people who ran the trains. Back then Turk watches sucked, but Russian pocket watches were excellent. Once everyone had reliable timepieces, the trains began to run on time.

Its a cool pocket watch...still keeps good time.

when gibson spouted off that junk to that cop, it was during the israel/hezbollah war in lebanon. israel was taking a lot of criticism for fighting back. i recall huffington was up at that time and the comments on articles were just downright viciously anti-semitic (also on yahoo news articles). i think gibson would drink, sit at his computer and read that crap and out it poured.

509 In point of fact, Columbia and Brazil could very easily take control of their respective border crossings/towns. There's no significant Venezuelan military presence there, just the hired thugs with a few rifles. The same people live on both sides, often parts of the same families.

There's only one highway that controls access to the entire southern half of Venezuela, for example, and it has very little military presence. Brazil could take it in 2 or 3 days without firing a shot, if it wanted to. But then they'd be responsible for feeding the people there, and I think that's the real problem.

Gibson seems to recognize his demons more than most in Hollywood, and he has apparently quietly reached out to others when they spiral out of control. For example, he tried to assist Britney Spears when she had her ugly breakdown. It's interesting that Hollywood only forgives people who don't really want to get better, just are willing to play the apology game, such as James Gunn.

Which was one of the most disgusting acts in his long and disgusting life. Clinton KNEW - as everyone in this country who watched reports knew - what was about to happen in Rwanda. There were appeals for aid, calls - just a tiny bit of resolve and they wouldn't have gone on with it. But the anti-Tutsi leaders saw that there was no pushback from anyone, and so they felt free to launch a campaign of slaughter.

Clinton consciously made the decision that there was no political advantage to be gained from interfering, and he (and his administration) made the decision to make it appear that they didn't know what was happening. They also *Ahead Of Time* made the decision that if things got Really Bad, they could issue an Apology after the Fact to explain why they didn't do anything, and that would make it All Right.

I say this as literal Fact - Clinton and his team had already written the apology for doing nothing before the slaughter had even started.

618 608 All those millenials that say yes to socialism in polls are thinking social as in social media and how if we all get on the same page and in power, we can wipe out those yucky haters.

They're thinking Sweden. Pro Tip: Sweden isn't socialist, it's a high-tax welfare state that allows private ownership of the means of production. Tell your average miseducated American 20-something what REAL socialism means and they just gawk at you.

Daniel Ortega ran to the left, but rules from the right. Not very far right, but right enough that the old-line Sandinistas call him "Somoza Lite".

627 Whose memoir was it that discussed the Balkan intervention in the Clinton days where the French would immediately flee the conferences, fire up their cellphones and let the Serbs know where the bombs were going to fall that night?
Posted by: JEM at March 11, 2019 01:02 PM (8erNz)

In fairness, when I saw how slanted USA policy of the time was against the Serbs and toward the Croats and Albanians, I was tempted to go out to my nearest freeway sound walls and spray-paint "US HANDS OFF KOSOVO" and "SERBIA IS NOT MY ENEMY", just to see if any of the leftist dupes around my parts would notice the wording.

Back in the day, the Commiecrat dupes around here used to do that, just replacing "EL SALVADOR" for "KOSOVO" and "NICARAGUA" for "SERBIA".

629 Look, I frankly believe that the only functioning third world states were the beneficiaries of colonialism, and that France was one of the less productive of those colonial powers, but in the end France mostly shot THEMSELVES in the foot.
Posted by: JEM at March 11, 2019 01:00 PM (8erNz)

The key was Cultural arrogance.

The English believed their culture was superior, and that the Wogs should become English, or as close as possible.

French believed that their culture was SO superior, that no one could ever become French, so they did not try to change the native populace.

Spain's issue was that Colonial rule was tied to closely to the crown, which kept breaking their own deals with those they sent to be Governors and Landowners. So those in power in the Colonies would exploit the populace and get rich while they had a chance.

Tom Servo , do you have a link?

among other things, he's saying that what he's seeing is that all of the field electrical workers, who should be working frantically to restore the system, have been sent home "until further notice" because no on in the country anymore understands what's wrong or knows how to fix it.

the entire country of Venezuela gets between 50% - 70% of its power from one single hydroelectric source, the Guri Electric complex. If the generators there have gone down - perhaps blown out by severe electric feedback as the grid collapsed - then Caracas is doomed.

You know, that's A LOT like Bill Clinton, especially after the Great Congress GOP Victory of 1994. Clinton canned his leftist advisors like Cisneros, Shalala, Elders, put Hillary back in the kitchen making Cookies, and put in advisors like Robert Rubin. In the end, Billy Jeff signed off on welfare reform and capital gains tax cuts, fueling the dot com boom of the 1990s.

But Bill Clinton wasn't really all about the Marxism. Bill Clinton as all about - Bill Clinton.
