EMT 02/23/19

EMT nerd talk.

Hoping some of the horde will have some good tips for me here.

I'm looking to run a linux virtual machine to use for secure comms between the home office and business. Email, messaging, video streaming and large file transfer are the main needs.

The one distro I was really interested in was SubgraphOS, but it doesn't run in a virtual environment.

Whonix looks to be a good option, but it runs on Virtual Box vm enviro, and I'm currently working with a VMware ESXi setup that I can't get away from for the time being. I could probably nest VB into a Windows or Linux VM off of VMware if I had to, but it's added complexity that I'd just as soon avoid for now.

Security & privacy are key. I expect to be using NordVPN as well.

I can pay for good advice with a free Nigerian beatdown.

1 Good Morning Morons; today is Saturday, February 23, 2019. On this day in 532 Byzantine emperor Justinian I ordered the building of the Hagia Sophia. Which was eventually taken over by the muzzie death cult and desecrated. It is a museum today.

They absolutely know who the Berkeley official was who praised the thug. The official will probably get a letter in his file and nothing more. The thug will not be identified despite having a video of the event. It may come to surface years after after the event and nothing will be done.

A North Carolina judge on Friday ruled that two amendments, one requiring identification to vote and another capping the state income tax, were unconstitutional because racial gerrymandering meant that the state's legislature was "illegally constituted."

I ask two things, how can a statewide vote on amendments to the State Constitution be affected by gerrymandered districts. It's a statewide vote by individuals, not districts. This shithead should be removed from the bench. It is far past the time when voters should have to put up with lawless judges.

31 Take a look at QubesOS. It compartmentalizes your machine into domains that are in themselves virtual machines. Thus, you can have a "personal" domain that does email, etc., and an "untrusted" domain for surfing the web (and it comes with a built-in whonix domain for Tor use), etc. so that if you download malware while surfing, it can't get to your email or work stuff because they are in different environments that don't talk to each other.

It's not for naive users, and you have to take a couple of extra steps to copy data and such from one domain to another, but it seems to be pretty secure when it comes to this kind of thing. It comes with built-in fedora, debian, and whonix domains (called "templates"), from which you can build your personal domains (called "qubes"). The default installation builds personal, work, and untrusted domains, but you can do others. It also comes with so-called "disposable" VMs that are created for just one window and that destroys itself when the window is closed -- anything that happens there is opaque to the rest of the machine (and vice versa).
It takes some getting used to, but I like it.

Chambers (I) made the comments Tuesday as he spoke out against a state bill that would update civics requirements for students.

126 And the reason you don't just convert the machine image from VirtualBox to VMWare is? From the inside, it just looks like a virtual machine. The only thing you really have to do is convert the disk image from one format to another.

Personally, I use VirtualBox for everything, but at work we use VMWare for everything, even stuff that doesn't make any sense to virtualize, because we had a site license which wasn't per-instance. VMWare recently came to their senses, though, so we're probably going to switch a lot of it to KVM because the IT guys apparently enjoy pain.

128 "Holy cow. Who got what riled up? Or is this just a few bodies above normal so therefore Newz Worthy?"

It's about 4 times the average rate of shootings and deaths here.

So the concern, with a brand new Commissioner not even fully in the saddle yet, is if this is an anomaly, or a sustained trend upward.

This also ties in with John's Hopkins trying to get legislation passed to allow them to form a self financed armed On-Campus police force for protection of students and faculty.

This would free up a city which is currently about 500 Officer understaffed from the need to involve roughly 100 officers in Hopkins Campus issues.

Politicians are opposed to it.

Just like the School Board opposing allowing the Baltimore School Police from carrying weapons inside city schools during school hours.

The city is killing itself.
And they are arguing that more Police will not reduce crime.

Yes...the victim.

And I tend to post a lot about our little town, to hold it up as an example of what happens when uninterrupted Democratic rule, an anti-gun agenda and a failed justice system collides with a generational trend towards qualifications for entitlement programs.

Perhaps others can learn from our mistakes.

144 My wife tried to get me to watch "Ozark" on Netflix or Amazon, one of them. It has the bleakest view of middle America I'e ever seen on TV. Basically the plot is some urban sophisticates are driven out of Chicago to Missouri, because of a business dispute with a Mexican cartel drug gang leader. There, they find a small town with a giant anti-abortion billboard on Main Street and entire county of criminals doing various criminal things. Happily, they seem to fit right in, since they too are criminals (though less spiritually corrupt and just plain sicko as their new neighbors).

IIRC, the Obama DOJ declined to prosecute him on these crimes. Of course, they probably thought they'd have to drag down his step-by-step partner in all this, the Podesta brothers, but they just weren't thinking creatively enough. Mueller has simply ignored the Podestas, solving that problem.

261 Here's another vote for Docker. As a former VM disciple I was slow to accept Docker, it just seemed like it was too easy to be "the right way to do things". I've done a complete 180 in the past few years though. I almost never mess with VMs unless there is a super compelling reason to. There usually isn't. Docker is the 1st stop, and usually the only stop. Docker Compose makes creating complex stacks with multiple networks (e.g. internal for inter-container communication and external for web-facing interfaces) dead-simple.

262 Dang...these comments are a bit noisy. Secure file xfer is challenging, mostly because any device connected to the inet is almost by def unsecure. Sounds like you're just looking for an OS to use as a VPN or secure transfer app endpoint? Is that correct? Which would mean you're defining "secure" as "encrypted in transit"? It would help to know what your objectives/constraints are. Just wanting use out-of-the-box freeware? Enjoy the work of hardening the freeware OS by applying some config guidance? Or not? Any particular cyber threats in mind? There's not really a one-size-fits-all solution.

263 Linux distro recommendations:
Fedora, Ubuntu, Mint: Pick one, all three work quite well.

265 Seems overly complex.
Just run a tunnel from your windows box to your office's router. Most decent routers - especially ones running either commercial or fully Open Source firmware support an abundance of tunneling methods.

I use Tinc to create a virtual LAN between 5 different locations. (All devices connected see all the others.)
It runs on Linux, Windows, Android, and with too much effort OS X. There might be better options, but it was easier than OpenVPN, and it works - so I don't care to look at other things. (I've been using it for 5-6 years.)

266 You could run the Tinc server as a VM. It's a standard package, so most normal distro's support it just fine.
KISS - because your time has value.

267 RZ suggestion sounds easy enough, though hopefully you have a FW and know how to configure it. If this is what you mean by security, why not just use FileZilla or some other ftps freeware?

268 I gave up on vm and just throw raspberry pi devices at tasks. So use raspian and pivpn. So easy even a moron can do it!!!

269 Use Streisand. https://github.com/StreisandEffect/streisand . You can set up a VPN with wireguard pretty easily. Or OpenVPN. Very simple config.

270 hi:
Since I do not know what your actual needs are in enough detail to provide actual help, let me make an out of the box suggestion for your consideration: don't use a VM at all, use a secured (sort of anyway) content management system instead.
Many drupal distributions (base + modules) let you use courier for private communications within a public site, upload/download files, generate groupings with differing access, and link to email. Opensocial is one I particularly like and will do what you say you want as well as a few hundred other things too.
Run opensocial on apache2 with ssl enabled and you have a secure, public, communications system accessible from anywhere with little risk of third party access.
Note that no intel based system is ever going to be genuinely secure, and anything that uses downloaded code embodies risks - but there's a balance and, unless you need real security (in which case use a courier) apache2/drupal on Lintel works pretty well.

271 Why not run Linux native and Windows in the VM?

272 Data Security: Don't rely on the network or OS for security. Encrypt/Decrypt all your files with PGPTool and distribute them between your fileservers automatically with a free file-sync system like Onedrive.

Don't put any Unencrypted files on your fileservers.
