Houston undercover P.D. officers raid a house. Two suspects DRT, five Officers wounded. One of those still in the hospital.
This was a couple weeks back, made big news, even the national networks.
And now?
There was NO "confidential informant", no black-tar heroin found, only a tiny bit of weed and trace amount some un-identified powder.
So, the undercover cop falsified an affidavit for a no-knock warrant.
Homeowner was 28 year resident, former Marine (IIRC), salt of the earth, according to his neighbors.
Went down fighting, against what surely looked like a home invasion mob. Guy's wife went down fighting for her man, too.
All five cops survived. NOT all five are going to survive the coming prosecutions.
The shit storm is coming there, and it's gonna rain HARD on at least one or two of those officers.

What we have learned is that the basic functions outlined in the US Constitution as to what the limited purpose of a federal government is to handle - have been ignored, if not rebelled against by that very government.
The US military does not serve America's interest. Our foreign policy is decidedly anti-American, in that it is overtly hostile to the interests of American citizens. The borders are deliberately set open, our culture is under attack, and the Republican form of government has been replaced by a kleptocratic kakistocracy.
Each state basically has its own identical functions of the FedGov: environmental protection, justice system, education, national guard, welfare, transportation, etc.
The currency isn't even US currency, it is private bank notes - Federal Reserve.
There honestly is no valid reason to have a Federal Government because whatever interests it serves, none of it is Constitutional nor compatible with American interests and founding principles.

I think of cops dealing with the bums who are camping next to the Angels' stadium. I see those encampments whenever I take the train past them, and I think, "The cops truly are society's garbagemen." As such, I'm willing to cut them quite a bit of slack. Not an infinite amount, but quite a bit.

Miley's back was to them, so couldn't see it, but Princess came
in, yakking on her smart phone. She sat down and continued to yak, then
stopped talking and starting thumbing and texting. She did put the phone
away when dinner was served.

A half life-time ago, I remember a bunch of long serving Dallas PD officers (now retired) who were lamenting how city politics ruined their jobs and their effectiveness.
Relative to this topic, one retold the story of how the duty sergeant while assigning the shift goals, BOLOs and other pep talk might utter "I need some of you to take care of an auto theft problem in the north-west". Which was code for: when you find these known transgressors, work them over so that they can think about how they are wasting their life while in traction at the local hospital.
So they would make this ball tazing thing look like playground grabass in comparison. When, after convalescing, the crims would likely relocate to a suburb and become someone else's problem.
But the Dallas PD would reduce the complaints for auto theft.
Sometimes delivering the occasional tuneup with the Old Hickory Wood Shampoo and a Capsaisan Facewash is the only thing that some folks respond to.

Just an example - my wife got a ticket for running a red light. It's a turn where there is a green arrow. The cop was on the other side of where she turned. He wrote her the ticket though he could not observe the signal from where he was. He said that the sequence of the lights went in a way that she had gone on red.
So we went up there and videod the light sequence and she took it to court. It was NOT what the cop said it was.
Judge dismissed the charge.
But in the cases prior to that, the judge took the cops word over ever other defendant.

There is a film festival related to the old time actors colony that was in Muskegon. Paper mill and the jobs that went with it are long gone. I lived there for 14 years. Just sold our house there recently.

That would be my prediction. You'd have a harder time finding candidates at all levels of capability and probity, bad to good.
You're talking about a job where you have twelve encounters per day that would make any ordinary person see red. On top of that, you're carrying a cam recording everything you do and say.
If you're young and smart, you KNOW there won't be any pension $ left in a decade or two.
You can have a pure, flawless, law enforcement apparatus if you can afford it. But it will be a tiny force, since pure candidates are rare. Maybe we can get them taser-drones to help.

I probably should too. I go see my grown kids who live outside Detroit, but i drive there (19 hours straight) and by the time I get there I just don't feel like doing another 8 hour round trip to Holton and back.
My mom is still on the family farm (400 acres outside town) and getting up there in years. Plus over the years I always felt like I was a pleasant distraction for Scotty from his work whenever I rolled into town. He would appreciate me making an appearance.

The other stuff is bad, but I have yet to see them pull random citizens off the street for no reason and start tazing their junk, etc. NOT SAYING they should do that, but I have memories of cops finally getting flat out tired of dealing with my drunken, belligerent father and start whoopin on his ass to get him in the squad car. Start off on fingers and toes and work their way in.
Lord knows what might have happened if they'd had tasers.
Again, not defending; see my comment upthread about how I am sympathetic to an extent to black folks being leery of cops overall.

the cops, seemed like some sort of tactical team of some sort, had surrounded some guys a car and tased him. traffic was slow enough that you could hear the cops yelling, "stay down, stay down" then some sort of yelling from the tased guy then the tell tale noise of the taser and more yelling from somewhere out of sight on the shoulder.

People who relocate to Bumfuck -- or anywhere -- want more than just a solitary job, especially if they're going to have money to spend on consumables and entertainment.
They want similar booming businesses around because they don't expect to hold their one job at Amazon for their entire career. So the environment has to be filled with industry and opportunity.
At the same time, Amazon wants a location where they can draw on the local talent pool. If they build in Bumfuck, they'll have to pay relocation costs for 95% of their employees, what few they could get from the bottom of the barrel or from overseas.
I believe single-employer towns are some kind of economic and political curiosity.

Understood. Also, Amazon sells things so it helps to be near buyers and sellers. It would not surprise me if Amazon branched out into FinTech and a NYC presence is mandatory. Also, there are plenty of companies that would like to leverage the AWS cloud services and it helps to have consultants "down the street".

I was just thinking the other day about the new tower they built and how the completion of that symbolic building was the most anti-climactic event in history.
It took over a decade to build it, because New York. That was Strike 1.
Each year that passed after 9/11, the Rest Of Us grew to hate NYC more and more. Ungrateful people who were determined to repeat the mistakes that precipitated 9/11. That was Strikes 2 and 3. By the time the new tower was open, nobody outside Manhattan gave a shit.

Industrial and manufacturing giants can lift a small, rural community from poverty to prosperity inside of a decade, simply by locating one single operating plant in that locale.
They'll certainly hire local highly qualified talent for creative or management positions, but initially, most of those are imported from out of town. Takes a while to sort the local wheat from the local chaff, you see.
For the most part though? That "single-employer" is the salvation of that otherwise forgotten town.
I come from an industry that leveraged such frequently, as a way to keep their manufactured products "Made in U.S.A.", vs. offshoring the production.
And it succeeded wildly, and still does. Those local folks KNOW that they got Christmas All Year when the mega corp opened the mega factory, out above the holler.
That's an "(almost) everyone wins" situation, right there.
To be sure, some folks catch hell in the doing. Trailer park slum lords, payday lenders...their business falls off precipitously when prosperity spreads throughout the town and region.

The county I grew up in has two towns of any note. One has the paper mill which is still going. The other had a big plant (now long gone) that made fan belts and radiator hoses and such for cars, and also a fairly large shoe manufacturer that made boots for the army (also long gone). It does have a smaller annex of the paper mill that makes paper for milk cartons.
Growing up it was most people worked at one of the three big plants.

I feel like there's something obvious I'm missing here. The vendors don't pay the state sales taxes, they charge them to the customer and pass them on to the state. And adding them to the transaction was a condition that states demanded if Amazon was going to open a warehouse or a hub or distribution center in that state.
Or am I mistaken?

Long ride, left San Antonio, made a wee detour through Orlando, FL to see the folks. Then, on up I-95.
Overnighted in the D.C. outskirts, and next day made a visit through D.C., but pressed on through Jersey and through the tunnel on into Manhattan.
This would've been, oh, '92 ish.
I did find a very good pizza in Greenwich Village, but thereafter, rolled-on the throttle and made my way into CT for the night, before visiting a Corporate Location the next morning.
Then onward to the Corporate H.Q. north of Boston, for a couple weeks of (mostly) B.S. meetings n' such.
Factoid.
Boston drivers are the worst I've encountered. Highly aggressive, low skilled and rude.
The NYC cabbies were horrible, and I had to keep my head on a swivel that'd put an owl to shame. But, lay on the horn, and press the bike over into the lane as needed, and they'd make room, even if only by a single inch.
Boston drivers wouldn't give that inch. They wanted to me dead, or somewhere behind them in traffic.
Prudently, I let 'em power on ahead. Cause it was vital that they made that exit five miles ahead, one car length further along the road.

I actually loved The Maritimes when I visited there. Stayed at a B and B in a small town 20 or so minutes away from Halifax, doing day trips to Halifax and points further north. Great weather, too. But then, I'm a sucker for pretty much any ocean coastline area.

I was and still am heavily recruited by Amazon for their Austin office at The Domain.
So I relented and decided to check the place out. Cameras everywhere. The two Mills sitting in the foyer snakepit checking in guests looked soulless, thousand mile stares.
The foyer furniture looked like a college campus frathouse. The office furniture was barely one step above folding tables, the chairs, bare minimum office, the computers, no name machines with crappy monitors. People sit shoulder to shoulder with all the fluorescent lights on and the blinds closed to the outside world.
Pay was ok - around $200k, but it wasn't worth exchanging my soul over. I know a number of people who have worked there, basically it is very competitive where people can abandon a team and join another which is very disruptive. Many people develop drug habits, amphetamines to make it through the day, barbs to sleep at night. Antianxiety medications throughout.
I think the work would be challenging and fulfilling (under NDA so shouldn't discuss). Given what I have seen, Amazon can and should change the world their advertisements about "not every idea ..." is accurate.

Long before I bought my first Gold Wing, I was a pretty good dirt-bike pusher. Grew up in Southern CA, in the "On Any Sunday" era. My first owned bike was a Hodaka Ace 100.
Learned to "not suck" on the track on a Yamaha RD-350, with one ride at Riverside back when the place existed.
Many, MANY streetbikes in the pre-'Wing logbook, 'tween '74 and '83.
Bought my first 'Wing, when I was but 22 years old. An '82 model, bought in '83. Rode it to a rally, and people were wondering what I was doing on my Dad's bike. lol
I already HAD all the "go fasties" out of my system by then. I had Touring and Horizons in mind, ever since I was fifteen years old.
Point is though, I did not come to "touring motorcycles" as an unskilled novice.
All that to say this.
Twice in Boston, I put the 'Wing up onto a downtown sidewalk, to avoid some kamikaze driver intent on sinking my battleship.
Never had to do that before, or since.

East Tennessee has some neat history. It was most likely going to secede from TN and remain Union but Nashville sent troops to occupy and hold it. Lincoln put priority on East TN because of the sympathies there and there was an active guerilla effort by the East against Confederate interests.

When I was 6 we lived in Dawsonville, and rented our house from George Elliot. His son lived next to us, and he is the only thing Dawsonville is known for, AFAIK.
My dad is a huge NASCAR fan, and he was stoked. I had a great uncle by marriage, and dad would drive us over there and buy shine from him. They had no electricity or indoor plumbing. Addie cooked on a wood stove and she ironed with real irons. That's amazing to me.

Just came across a UToob video of an event that just took place there - 75th anniversary of the lifting of the blockade. Military formation and parade in Palace Square, in front of the Hermitage (Winter Palace) - as imposing a setting as the victory parade every May in Red Square. But January, so the troops were all decked out in winter gear, which was nice to see.
On Nevskiy Prospyekt, the main drag in St Petersburg, buildings on one side of the street had painted on them "During bombardment this side of the street is safer" - they'd repaint/maintain those messages, decades later, as a memorial. Wonder if those are still there? Hope so.
Judging by the Victory Day events I watch on the computer every year, Russia (while a civic wasteland and tragic waste of human potential) is a place where real, important history is not forgotten, and younger generations are not impoverished by *not* being taught to know and respect it.

Well, I just this week updated my desktop here in Arizona to Linux Mint 19.1 Tessa. Bug number one was that I could not see the scanner built into my Canon printer. It saw the printer fine, but did not see the scanner. After much fucking around, downloaded a program called "scangear" which sees the scanner and enabled me to scan some docs.
And then I had problems trying to get Brave browser to work. The system said it could not see the listfile of software sources, and that the first entry in the file was corrupt. Finally had to log in as root, and delete all the listfiles, at which point the sytem searched for and found new ones online, and it all came together. Brave is now working OK. So I can see the HQ without ads (and it loads quickly!), and I can see both sides of kbdabear's compliance pics, and I can view ewetoobs, too.
Nice thing about Linux is that there is a metric fuckton of support to be found out there.

Now, that one wouldn't bother me so much. Commercial poppers aren't really that expensive (it's just a plexiglas box with an electric kettle in it) and the popcorn itself is dirt cheap, so I'd take that as an indication the company was providing cheap snacks.
More concerning would be if they were having a catering service bring in gourmet sushi or some crap.

I *always* make the point that I am inquiring as to why the product failed. I never demand compensation.
Most interesting case: I returned an English muffin to Pepperidge Farms, which had a glob of carbonized dough in the middle. I forgot about it, until, a few weeks later the doorbell rings, and standing there is a guy in a PF shirt with a large grocery bag packed with baked goods.
I could hardly pack it all into the freezer. I was eating PF stuf for the next 6 months.

One mistake we make is donating to politicians. We should direct our resources to the people who support us.
I realized this when I donated to Romney and suddenly me email was on every single republican list and I could not unsubscribe because it was a single firm doing all the mailers, and when you unsubscribe you only were removed from that particular politicans list. So, it was like playing whack a mole.
The kicker was when I started gettting mailers from Dems. How is that for a uniparty ?
My point here is that we need to circle the wagons and cooperate the way the left does. No enemies to the right.
I paid 15 a month to blizzard. That stops and it goes to Ace. I've been donating quartely to the Ewok since 2012 but that is going to monthly.

Speaking of wall, is there any reason we couldn't make a temporary wall out of inflatable Kevlar? I'm thinking of a Wedge shape that's 12-feet wide and 16-feet high.. with a slot down the center and cavity at the bottom that you can fill with rocks or water to weight it down. The south side would have a layer of smooth latex that is oiled down to prevent anyone from successfully ascending the insta-wall (refreshed each day by a drones?).
What do you guys think? Feasible?

Ok... but do you realize that this and all of the other provisions in this Approbation automatically expire on September 30th? This is not "legislation". Just funding for existing agencies and programs. And the rules/mandates only apply to the funds in this particular Bill... DHS can always use existing money left over rom previous years to deport the class of people described in "Section 224".
