"Big Apple" is a nickname for New York City. It was first popularized in the 1920s by John J. Fitz Gerald, a sports writer for the New York Morning Telegraph. Its popularity since the 1970s is due in part to a promotional campaign by the New York tourist authorities.

Welcome to the American judicial system.

Really, though, it's at least partially a good thing.

2 years after the fact, and tempers have largely cooled. The jury can approach the situation more rationally than closer to the moment.

Still, makes me think about the movie We Need to Talk about Kevin (never read the book). That's some good stuff right there.

With Surrealism, especially Realistic Surrealism, be careful in finding symbolism in the work. Much of the work is based on dream imagery, word/image association, or good-old-fashioned screwing with the viewer.

I have an AMBIENT WS-1171 weather monitor that gives temps, barometric readings, and humidity. The barometric reading follows along with the local airport readings pretty close. And BION it allows you to "calibrate" the humidity readings. Something every other weather monitor I have add was sorely lacking in. You can adjust the indicated humidity up or down. So I "calibrated" mine using a wet bulb-dry bulb thermometer with a "wind source" on it.

We could get ridiculous replays of Revenue Agents chasing moonshiners through the hills again, while they wonder why all of the locals hate them. (you're just a grubby tax collector, you're not an Officer of the Law)

People have forgotten why Prohibition fell apart so quickly in the early 30's; it wasn't just that people were sick of it. The depression had begun, and every state was running out of money - legalization and harvesting the revenue stream was one of the only realistic ways to get the states out of the financial hole they were in.

Expect every blue state that has jacked up tax rates, and that is seeing falling revenues because of this, push for full legalization soon for this reason.

And of course, once half the country has full legalization, it will be pointless for the other half to try to restrict it.

275 The lesson for governments that want to make a good profit from recently legalized contraband; tax the goods, but not so high that you incentivize entrepreneurs to keep the black market going. (because if they were going to go black market with heavy criminal penalties, they're going to do it in the face of much lighter financial penalties)

But as with alcohol, when taxes are present but not high enough to make everyone who wants it search for alternate avenues, then the State can make some easy money.

278 People really dont understand the cult that is the Democratic Party. I had a discussion with a guy I work with. Fairly reasonable guy who is now getting killed by the politics he voted for in NJ. He was actively complaining about taxes and all the ills democrats have foisted on him. Bottom line, he is moving to another state. I asked him if he regretted his voting decisions and his irrational answer was no. He blamed it on general politics and not an particular party. I pointed out only one party is making the decisions that hurt him and provided material arguments to back it up. We moved to national politics and I made the same arguments for the president. His only retort was that he will continue to vote for Democrats and anybody but Trump. I said, even Bernie? He said, yes. Now this guy is a well educated, regular guy. But when it comes to rationality and politics, he's the village idiot. Oh, and good luck to the state who gets people like this. This is what we are up against, a bunch of people who just can't seem to grasp substance and facts over emotion.

You're an imposter! That's what an engineer would answer.

A physicist would drop the aneroid barometer from the top of the building, measure the time it took to land on the ground, and calculate the height.

A meteorologist would take reading on the ground and at the top, and calculate the height, based on the pressure difference.

A Mexican weather girl would jiggle her assets at the building owner, and ask for the height.

388 someone already said ... Banana

but CNN goes further ... it identifies as a banana, call it a banana or be fired, or scolded. AND it is trapped in this room because ... TRUMP. And there are white supremacists involved.

The worst part of CNNs lies .. is when they say 'this is America, this is the world we live in'

even if true, it is only only guy getting a scratch. But what IS true is America has a lot of fake news and big money trying to stir up riots, and they have caused a lot of racism against whites, but also bigotry against good ol' patriotism and love of God and country.

But even that is not "America" ... they are trying to end "America". Like Francis Scott Key saw ... the star spangled banner still waves. The people against the DC/NY power brokers and globalists ... is the battle.

439 There's a pull quote from that piece on the High Speed Rail thing, they're calling it "nuclear option" but that's just an attempt to make it sound outrageous.

The practice of recovering money after a breach of contract, while common in the private sector, was virtually unheard of in government, he explained.

"There is a reluctance to penalize misspending by local government agencies ... Almost never do those violations result in terminations, in part because federal agencies are set up to distribute money, not take it back, and they also lack funding for strict grant enforcement,"

I mean, that's just a recipe for fraud and waste, and if Trump can turn that around and set a precedent for money to be recovered, that's a huge thing. The fact that its a thumb in the eye of California for their idiotic train fantasy is just a bonus.

453 Just got a movie in the mail, and the box is pretty much destroyed...

Discs are fine, but the box is falling apart in four different places, sending little blue plastic bits everywhere.

Is it worth it to complain to Amazon?

If you're fine with 50% refund, that's great! Me? I return everything to Amazon if it's damaged in any way for an exchange or full refund. I sent a freaking mattress back because I had ordered the bed frame so long before I thought it was a different size! They've got the best return policy there is, unless it's your goof, and then you only have to pay shipping.

I need to break myself of the Amazon habit though. Just so hard with 2 day shipping. Even when their prices are higher, with CA sales tax at nearly 10% buying same item at Costco is still expensive. Unless it's really long term, and then Costco will take anything back a year later.

If it's camera gear though - that goes elsewhere. Because Amazon has the happy parts-bin, and gray market or counterfeit items from other sellers get mixed in there.

I really feel like Dune is one of those stories that is much better suited to a longer format. Real difficult to cram into 3 hours the amount of stuff you'd need to do the story justice.

Well, the movie is going to be the first half or so of the first book with hopes that it does well enough financially to fund a second film to cover the rest.

So, we're potentially looking at upwards of a 6 hour telling of the story with a mega-Hollywood budget.

456 That was one bit of casting I didn't like.

Duncan isn't really that important to the first book, but he's super important in the rest. In the rest, I see him as more of an spy or assassin type than an outright warrior.

475 I liked the book but I think translating it to a movie will be extremely challenging and I do not trust modern directors and writers to do it right. I mean, they'll probably finally get the weirding way right, because its basically Sherlock Holmes martial arts and they can do that well now. I expect a lot of slow motion then suddenly sped up moves and CGI reactions.

But the more subtle spy movie stuff? I doubt they'll get any of that right. And the women in the movie are pretty limited in their roles and you know damn well they will want to expand on that enormously.

Yeah, that is probably going to be hyped up by cast and crew in interviews.

I kind of doubt it actually appears in the movie itself.

The point of the book isn't to keep Arrakkis the same, but to induce climate change and change the face of the planet. That doesn't square well with the modern views on climate change of keeping everything the same and actually reverting to a natural state.

"Kraft Heinz results confirmed all our worst fears - plus more," Guggenheim Partners' analyst Laurent Grandet said in a note.

The $15.4 billion write-down indicates declining fortunes of the iconic brands and other losses in asset value, meaning the company views those assets as less valuable than before the merger.

"We expect to take a step backwards in 2019," Chief Financial Officer David Knopf told analysts on a post earnings conference call, promising "consistent profit growth" starting in 2020.

559 Magritte is a good example of what I don't like about surrealism.

There is surrealism I like. Dali, for instance, has beautiful works, just loaded with meaning.

Most surrealists made works whose meaning doesn't extend beyond the frame - the work is a thing unto itself.

It exists solely to reject meaning. It's basically a form of nihilism.

Magritte, in particular, is troubling to me. He was so skilled... look at his use of trompe l'oeil. He could have used his powers for good, but made this fluff instead. He's to art what John Mayer is to the guitar.

Since books and movies are different mediums, they have different aspects that make them great, and that doesn't always translate across.

Think of Dickens (I'm in the middle of writing a review of an adaptation of Great Expectations, going up soon). His books aren't only great because they have wonderful characters and well executed plots and themes. They're also great because Dickens wrote really well.

How do you translate that to screen? His descriptions of people and places?

In my mind, there's little point in comparing a book to its movie, because they're inherently different beasts.

585 The film opens with a flying saucer hovering over a waterfall. A hooded figure, an engineer (waxy skin and all) with resting bitch face gazes moodily at the cascading water then at the flying saucer. He lays down a hemisphere containing some black goo. One of a series of black goos in this movie which does various things without consistency or explanation. He then gets naked, all but a loincloth, and drinks the cup of goo. The flying saucer leaves and our buff wax figurine doubles over in convulsive pain as the goo begins to disassemble him down to a genetic level. In fact, his DNA is shown to literally turn to ash. He topples into the water and dissolves as his DNA and blood cells start reassembling and the opening credits play.

Swelling is caused by an inrush of blood to the injured area.

Relocating the inrush of blood may prevent swelling in the unwanted swell area.

Blue Coal was a trademarked brand of Glen Alden Coal Company in Pennsylvania. It was sprayed with a blue dye at the mine before shipping to distinguish it from competitors.

I think the scope and scale of Dune is impossible to capture in a single movie. One of the dumbest things I ever did in High School was to write a book report on Dune - because I loved the book so much. Longest book report in the history of the world. Dumb. Dumb. Dumb.

616 This net picking, here and to follow, is important. This is the opening of our film, our promise to the audience. And what we have is a waxy buff guy who drinks some good and dissolves. He's LEFT on Earth and he drinks the goo apparently voluntarily but we don't know who he is or why he's doing this. It almost seems like he's been sentenced to die this way rather than choosing it, but we see no choice. We see no decision, apart from the drinking. No thought, no contemplation, no regret or anger or much emotion at all. Why?

Why is an endless speculation here. This is an intriguing beginning but not a hooky one. And it is not an opening that blends well with the true beginning of the film.

Posted by: Cannibal Bob at February 22, 2019 11:21 AM (9oE3U)

630 So what is our promise here? Well, there will be aliens and spaceships and there is an implicit promise that we will discover who this alien is and why he killed himself by drinking black goo. It is worth mentioning that only the aliens and spaceships promise will be kept. And there is that word: alien. The movie Alien is what started all this, and we even get a little cameo from the namesake xenomorph near the end of Prometheus but the first alien we see sorta looks like us. Us humans. Not really alien at all, apart from a bad waxy buildup on the skin and a hatred of body and facial hair. He looks nothing like the vast Navigator we see on the crashed alien ship on the surface of LV426 in Alien, despite a laughable bit of elephant spacesuit cosplay later in the movie. No, this engineer is not alien. It may well be that this movie should never have been connected to the Alien franchise at all. It probably would have improved things.

But that is our beginning and my introduction. I offer The James Madison an opportunity to comment on the beginning and then I shall reply and move on to the worst thing in Prometheus: the human cast.
