George Washington University is the latest college where individuals are considering changing their school mascot. Campus Reform Correspondents Victoria Snitsar and Abigail Marone visited the school to ask students what they thought. One student called the mascot "a little white supremacisty [sic]."

Ask 100 people to define socialism, you would likely get 100 different answers. It reminds me of the story about blind people in a zoo touching an elephant for the first time. Each person has a different perception, depending on where they touch. On one end you receive free food, healthcare, and daily treats. Who wouldn’t want free stuff? Those on the “bouquet” end, dealing with the mess, would have a different opinion. If socialism is so good, one would think people would be migrating to the states offering the most free stuff. The major moving companies issue annual reports regarding migration.

How to spot a hoax.
Well, one kind of hoax, anyway. I'm not a general hoax expert. When the story is just too perfect, when it fits the stereotype that the perpetrator wants to believe, that's a big clue. But it would just be so cool if they were like that. I'll be they would be like that if they only had the chance. It's not too far-fetched that they could conceivably do that...

Welp, I got myself a Roku Premiere. Hooked it up today and signed up for a number of services, including Sling TV.
Good news: I personally like it. Live TV channels are available via the services from CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox. Lots of other live-steaming channels available via Sling.
Bad news: numerous other channels, such as PBS and CW, *only* offer shows in individual episodes, with no live streaming available. Also, you can't channel-surf on a Roku *except* within Sling and another (weird) service called Pluto TV, which contains very few mainstream channels. (Pluto TV *does* have NewsmaxTV, interestingly enough.)
Sling offers my local NBC and Fox channels in live streaming, but not CBS, ABC, CW or PBS.
Anyway. I crunched the numbers and if we stick with the Roku, at least my family can save about $85 a month on cable. (CBS All Access is $5.99 a month and the Sling package I chose, with extras, is $40 a month.)
Thinking it would be worth it to just spend another $60, get a digital antenna and bribe one of my BILs to instal it on the roof. At least then me and my mom could channel-surf through the old fashioned live network channels, as well as Sling.

Today, I found out that Spectrum (Comcast) disappeared the EPIX channels from our service. I called them and, after waiting 25 minutes on hold, I was told that Spectrum made those channels ala carte. I asked the guy why should I pay the same amount for fewer channels. He was speechless. I then began ranting about how wonderful it is dealing with a frigging monopoly, wished him well and hung up. We are paying way too much for the privilege of being screwed to death. Roku, Chromecast or Firestick here we come even after subscribing to multiple services we'll save a ton. Enough is enough.

It is to MY mom. When we moved to this house in August I told her we were getting rid of cable, and she said she would pay for it to keep it. $185 a month, the DVR is 90% full, AND she has Roku and Britbox subscriptions.

They've put down a rather large marker by stating that she will be in Court Tuesday in open session - if she fails to show up, I'm going to call shenanigans. I think that she is so nonfunctional that calls would start for her resignation if the truth were known - we'll see Tuesday if that assumption is right or not.

Looking at just a hi-speed internet connection, and then YouTube offers 60+ channels for $40 a month. Local stuff live, Foxnews, ESPN and ESPN2, and FS1 sports channels, TNT/TBS, and other stuff. 20 Mb download cable for $45 a month, no contract. Add the various taxes, and that is 50% savings off of Comcast.
Going to confirm this week.

If that occuts, then we'll see the abolition of money and other unicorn fart utopian disasters.
Payne's book covers this in much more detail and is not as left leaning as the series.

119 Evening all. Got my daughter married off last night. The entire event went great, from Friday night rehearsal through the wedding. Not a hitch. I now am proudly a father in law.

I cut the cord because I kept cable mainly for guests. I've never been a big TV watcher. So I got Direct TVNow, and have Amazon Prime, Netflix, HBO and a ton of other things.

we just replaced a five-year old cable modem with our own, and, because we live in an apartment complex with at least 20 wifi users in my building alone I shelled out for the best multi-channel router we could afford. Worth every penny.
Both are made by Netgear in their Nighthawk series.
The cable modem will pay for itself in a year in monthly savings on renting.

One other thing - some ISPs rent you a modem/router combo (one unit does both). If you use your own router, but still want to rent the modem, you may need to have the ISP put the modem in bridge mode (I think that's what it's called). This basically turns off the router piece.
I'd recommend getting your own modem, though.

I used to buy modem/router combos, a very good one from Belkin was $100-150 bucks, with a lifetime warranty. I found it to be better than renting, but I was a techie type.

This is a critical flaw a lot of designers have, any type of designer. Clothes happen to be a really bad example, so let's run with that.
Your job, designing things, is to make things that appeal to people.
If your market is only very slim people, and the people who are only attracted to very slim people, then of course you should design for them. But you have to understand that's a very limited market.
Most people are of average height, weight, and build , by the very definition of "average."
There's a certain amount to be said about the aspirational nature of marketing. Everyone wants more than they have, or to be more than they are, and a good advertising campaign will take advantage of that.
But, at the end of the day, you have to go after your buyer, and I think women will eventually tire of the pressure to look like little gay boys.

Your job, designing things, is to make things that appeal to people.
If your market is only very slim people, and the people who are only attracted to very slim people, then of course you should design for them. But you have to understand that's a very limited market.
Most people are of average height, weight, and build , by the very definition of "average."
There's a certain amount to be said about the aspirational nature of marketing. Everyone wants more than they have, or to be more than they are, and a good advertising campaign will take advantage of that.
But, at the end of the day, you have to go after your buyer, and I think women will eventually tire of the pressure to look like little gay boys.

Looked like a high school project that was not well scripted or filmed. They (as usual ) kept getting stuck or stopped by the ice and hoping that they didn't get stuck for the winter.
If the purpose was to show the artic was ice free they failed miserably.

This is nothing new.
Runway clothes are hideous now compared to the classic days of the 40s and 50s (when designers were no less gay, I'm sure), but thin has always been a thing in contemporary times.
Now, the freak nowadays can't be compared to the likes of Dior, Givenchy, Valentino, etc in their heyday, that's for sure, and the 60s saw it get exaggerated.
Ballet is another industry where women are skinny as fuck. Ice skaters, gymnasts, most are probably anorexic.

My sister and I went to see The Nutcracker ballet this past Christmas. It was at Warner Theater in DC and the DC Ballet troupe were the cast. I didn't see any anorexic types dancing around on stage. Every one of them looked athletic and very fit.

It is far better to own your own cable modem and router. I upgraded my modem to a DOCSIS 3.0 one a few months ago, so I could do IP6 and take advantage of the 200Mbps download speeds and 20Mbps upload.
My old DOCSIS 2.0 modem was grandfathered in, but was only capable of 30Mbps download, and couldn't do IP6 -- well, the system wouldn't provision it for IPv6.
When you own your own router,you can run custom firmware and all that and get a lot of complex functionality. I've got a Linkys WRT 3200ACM running the OpenWRT 18.06 firmware, and with that, it's as functional as a real router as opposed to the consumer grade stuff.
Now one caveat with the modems is if you get voice, phone over Internet, many ISPs make you rent their modem. That's the way Charter/Spectrum is here.

Turns out that there are bad apps you can install. In this case, it was the Kayak travel app, the only new app I had on it. I had just installed it Friday to track incoming wedding guests flights.
Since it would not do cell data, I had to boot it into safe mode and connect to wireless service to get to the play store to uninstall it. It is fine now, but what a freaking ordeal.

I did it a few years ago. I traveled from Lhasa to Kathmandu, and I spent a day at the Everest base camp on the Tibet side (now closed, apparently). 17,300 ft ASL. Stayed overnight in a yurt.
It was awesome. A peak travel experience.

I think that was the point he was trying to make, we all just assume it was our accent that changed the most but if we could travel back in time to say the founding of our country, the English spoken then, even by the English, would sound much more like we sound now than what's heard in modern England.

Yeah, I had never been anywhere close to that altitude outside of an airplane. I spent four days above 16,000 ft. I was really worried about AMS because there's no way to predict whether you'll get it. I did fine, except for some headaches, but a few people on my 23-person group were really struck down by it.

Brit actors can do Southern accents very well. Many Hollywood attempts at it are a joke, but I've heard Brits who could do them flawlessly.
One such actress was a guest on Jay Leno many moons ago and demonstrated. She could do a Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, etc, getting the differences just right.
An example of "Old Southern" or something that derives from it is the Charleston (S.C) and Savannah accents. They used to have a very different accent that didn't sound Southern at all.
The reason was back in Colonial days these were the port towns which maintained much closer ties with the British tongue.
The Charleston accent is dying out and is blending in with the surroundings now. To get a classic, non-corrupted example, you need very old speakers.
The non-rhotic Southern accents are also disappearing. R dropping will be gone after a few generations.

Actually it's the English accents that have changed. The various dialects present in 19th century America reflected the regions of England where most English speaking residents originated from. Even today, if you travel in Yorkshire, you notice that the Yorkshire accent sounds almost American, and is very different than the London accent, which is what is on the BBC. (A whole lot of Yorkies moved here)

I'm going to take Miley downstate and let her hear the low county accent here in SC. We're sort of in a different enclave here in the Upstate. We just need to go about 50 miles south and the difference will be noticeable.

I used to be able to do almost all of them, can still get pretty close. North Carolina is the most grating - "ye heah me???"
Georgia's easy to remember by pronouncing the state Jaw-ja". North Louisiana and Mississippi are similar to each other, actually much milder than the Carolinas and Georgia, and Southern Louisiana is all Thibodeaux and Boudreaux country. Texas is it's own thing.

I call it a bad idea. It conveys a sense that the car is warmed up, it isn't.
Transmission, shocks, differential, suspension components are all still cold.
Moreover, those corrosive exhaust gases are busily condensing in the exhaust system, rather than been exhausted.
Just drive below 30 mph for 1/2 hour or so.

It warms faster if you drive it. The manual says to start driving. Everybody says it's fine.
Putting it in gear or releasing the parking brake with the idle still above 1,000 just feels wrong and gives me an OCD twinge. So I don't do it.
I think it's different with a diesel though, I used to have a diesel Jetta that wouldn't warm up no matter how long you let it run, you just had to start driving it.

It's not just that it's still a gravel road, or that it's one lane most of the way (if you meet someone coming the other way, somebody has got to back up a long ways) No, the worst part is that for most of the way, the only thing between the your car door and a 200 foot steep vertical drop is a little 18" gravel berm. And the roads narrow enough that the person sitting in the passenger seat, if you 're going downstream, can see straight down that 200 foot drop the whole time.

they mostly think it is bad for the environment. they mostly make the argument that fuel injected engines do not benefit from having time to warm as much as engines with carburetors do so start the car and drive. even the libs articles concede that driving the car too hard for 10 or more minutes after starting cold would be very bad for the car.

Pretty sure the highest I've ever been is the top of Regulator Jackson or whatever the summit there is called now. Think it was pushing 12,000 ft. In whiteout conditions! Snowbird is my favorite skiing place even better than Mammoth.

I always drive gently in cold weather until the temp gauge starts to move. Then I slowly pick up to normal driving.
I've noticed some of these loathsome little bug cars, green vehicles or what-not, that will actually turn the engine off when the car is stopped, and recrank when you depress the accelerator to start off.
Fuck that shit. That's a demonstartion of the green > engine life philosophy. A lot of choices they make are governed by that and federal regulations mandating it. Like 5W-20 motor oil.

Anyway, stoked. Was not a huge concert-goer in my youth so this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see one of my favorite musicians. Judging from recent vids, Knopfler's still got it.

There's a Tascam Broadcast Deck FS over in Eastern WA that I want to buy...one of my dream decks.
Those last 2 years of production, when HX-Pro and DBS were available in a 3-Head unit are the ones to own. Sony, Technics, Phillips, Aiwa and Nak all made decks with those features. Right before they didn't make any decks ever again.

The high end AKAI cassette decks were the bomb, too. I had a bench-matched pair of single cassette drive decks, as "dual-drive" systems were pretty much "pro-sumer" grade, at best.
That said?
The high end of the Technics line was some of the best of the era, too.
Technics was the high end of the Panasonic factory. Sadly, the Panasonic ethic eventually pulled Technics down into the morass, and smothered 'em to death.
And if I'm not mistaken, the JC Penny's "MCS" line, was a store-labeled run of lower-end Technics systems, hybrid-ized for the Penny's consumer.
Late '80s, through mid '90s "Pro-Sumer" audio gear, was some of the most bang for the buck in the stereo arena, ever.
Not the "best". True audiophile gear is the stuff of blondes with store bought tits, and bankruptcy.
But that era's higher end "Pro-Consumer" lines.... absolutely slaughter most of what's on today's market, which masquerades as "audio" equipment.
It's a research and self-education driven market, to buy wisely. But it's possible, available and affordable.
Frustrating, fun and fulfilling, too.

That unit just had a new Reel Motor installed and he's been going over it for the last 2 weeks to make sure it is running perfectly.

Bested ONLY by the Sansui G series of Silver Face systems of the '70s and very early '80s.
Few years back, I reluctantly sold a G-5500 with dual digital and analog displays. The cost to re-cap and update the thing exceeded the actual sale value, by a LOT.
Damn shame.
Needed the funds, more than I needed to hang on to the powerhouse receiver.
Fully reconditioned, that's a VERY pricey unit, indeed.

Of course it's a good thing. Gets the oil moving in the engine, and also warms up the transmission, which is important. And gets some heat to the interior and the defrosters, too. Five to ten minutes, if you can spare the time.

As indeed they are if you simply start the engine and drive off. But if you let the engine warm up, at least the transmission will be warmed a little, because the transmission oil cooler is in the radiator (in most rigs), and churning the oil in the torque converter warms it a little, too.
And by letting the engine run until the windows are at least partly clear, you have the advantage of setting out on your journey in a warm car, with enough visibility to prevent destroying the car, and yourself, in a wreck.

I have all the broadcast channels via good old fashioned rabbit ears antenna; Sling TV with ESPN 1,2,3 and 27 other a la carte cable channels (you choose); and Netflix streaming and DVD. Sling is just $30/month and works great, even for the national college football championship and super heavy viewer traffic. I love it.
Also with the Roku you can watch Youtube and a bunch of other internet "content channels," too many to name.
My only frustration is that Netflix has drastically reduced the number of classic movies that you can see. Some are only on DVDs, but there are a lot of great ones, even Academy Award winners, that they don't carry at all. A classic movie service would fill that gap.
Total is about $47/month, which includes the Netflix.

That's the beauty of it! At zero dollars a month, it could be Zimbabwe bucks, and I still save money. And since I have a house in Alberta, and one in Arizona, that means there are two TV's that I don't have to save money on.

I've watched a couple of the new Alliance league games, and it's interesting how many American flags and on-field group prayers after injuries I've seen. There is some comical stuff like having an attractive, slender young woman in tight pants as one of the refs, but overall I'm liking it so far.
Regarding the woman ref, I'm not sure if she's there as a nod to Equality or as something for us guys to look at when she's walking away. Ref-wise, she stands WAY out of the way of the action and not right behind the defensive line, which is maybe something the Equality folks could ponder on if they think about it but they probably won't.
And anyway, tight pants.

I'm thinking between the Covington smear and the Jussie hoax falling apart the left will toke short break from hate crime this and review procedures. Two valuable lessons for their SJW base:
1. Make sure you have control of ALL video before making your smear.
2. No police reports. Report to the media or possibly campus police but stay away from real police that can investigate.

Pretty sure Trump finally got the goods on rosenstein and volunteering to wear the wire which I think is true.
