Obviously, there are people who die of a heart attack and have no end of life care.
But the amount of money spent on an 80 year old with a ton of medical conditions in the last year of her life can be astronomical.
The fans of socialized healthcare know this.
They know how big of a cost to the system an 80 year old with cancer is.
To make the math work on socialized medicine, they're going to have to do something about that.
I suppose they could go the typical socialized medicine route, and just make sure there are long lines to get in to certain treatments and hope the old geezers die before they get to the front of the line. That way, they don't have to openly admit that they're cutting old people off from medical care to save money.

Note also the not all treatments have to be covered. I seem to recall that for decades now people have been losing their minds that various insurance plans do not cover every single possible treatment for a $1.95 co pay.

Recall NHS's Liverpool Care Pathway where they set up cash incentives for hospitals that met or exceeded participation in the program. The program was: doctors killing (withholding all care, food and water) from seniors instead of providing costly treatment.
Cash incentives. Doctors finally revolted because hospitals were pressuring them to kill more for that $$$$. You know, policy and finance guys, who didn't want to know the details, just, you know, we need more seniors dispatched.
Worst part was that the LCP was used to deal with troublesome patients, the cranks, the younger but mentally disabled. It was the state offing the PITA patients --- for cash!

Now. This is true in the very technical sense. Her medical care did nothing to cure her or prolong her life. Not a single thing about that wonderful medical care that she didn't have to pay for (except it turns out there were several things she did) did one blessed thing to help her.
But that's because she had a rare type of cancer that's one of those by the time you are symptomatic it's too late. She could have been standing in the lobby of Sloan Kettering holding fistfuls of Amazon stock and carrying a back pack full of gold bars when she said "Huh, I've got this flu I can't shake" and it wouldn't have helped.
There's this utterly insane notion underlying the push for single payer that if we just go to that, everyone will get the most cutting edge treatment from the Mayo Clinic or pick your research hospital and no one will die.
Dude. No. That's not how this works, that's not how any of this works.

Unless your parents friends are both fairly wealthy and horrible at estate planning, they probably didn't pay any estate tax. (In 2006, the exemption to the estate tax was $2 million, now I think it's $5 million. Of course, if you're a multi millionaire, you should be putting your assets in trusts to avoid the estate tax alltogether.)
That being said -- I think it really is driven by healthcare costs. It's incredibly expensive to give full chemo and cancer treatment to a, say, 80 year old, when you know that even if you can fully cure them of the cancer, they'll probably be dead within a few years of natural causes anyways.

I'd say it's a lot more than just a theory. When you have to deal with an elderly relative it seems as if the medical community is ready to treat old age as pathology, jumping at the chance to prescribe drugs which will hasten their inability to care for themselves . If you have a parent that it in good health, it's like going to war every day to make sure that the drs keep their hands OFF of them! Do not even get me started on the bit where they give people morphine to hasten their demise. It is sickening. It's also a valid reason for having lots of kids and raising them to stay in close rapport with their family. A close-knit family can take care of their elders and keep them well and comfortable to the end.

Single payer is attractive to people who go to a doctor or take their kid to a doctor every time they get a sniffle, a rash, or a muscle ache. They like the idea that they can visit a doctor six times a month for free or a $5 copay, and just flash a card saying, I'm covered. What they don't realize nor have experience with until it's too late is the flip side. When you have a serious illness, or accident, you are left begging the system to allow you to have what is considered standard of care here in the USA. Go to the emergency room with chest pain, you immediately get not only appropriate diagnostics, but can then get emergency stents, or bypass surgery. Try that in rationed, socialized countries.
Also, I believe that in Canada, once you retire, you are on your own as far as medical insurance goes. And it doesn't pay for nursing homes, home health care, etc. you or your family have to pony up for it if it is available.

A small private jet burns several hundred gallons of jet fuel an HOUR while in flight.
I burn fewer than 500 gallons of diesel fuel a YEAR to heat my house and water.

Also, I believe that in Canada, once you retire, you are on your own as far as medical insurance goes. And it doesn't pay for nursing homes, home health care, etc. you or your family have to pony up for it if it is available.

That's very true. I've noticed that people who way over utilize the medical system (and drive up costs for all of us) are the ones who want socialized medicine the most and bitch about the cost of their insurance the most.
I knew a guy in his late 50's, in like... average health who went to urgent care or the ER probably 5-6 times a year.
He'd get a cold and show up at the ER demanding anti biotics.
And the sick thing is? They'd give it to him, just to make him go away.
they should say "you have a god damn cold, dude, get some robotussin and gatorade and go lay in bed for a few days. Antibiotics wont do shit for you."

Some people use propane to heat though. Propane can direct vent out of the house with PVC. Or natural gas (which can also direct vent) if you live in a city that has natural gas.
Oil furnaces require a flue, and usually are next to the chimney, which they vent through.

I don't think so, really. Single payer is very attractive to people with pre-existing conditions, chronic illnesses that need alot of treatment or who suddenly become very sick, IE with cancer etc.
The current system works well in some ways but it really needs to be overhauled in respect to the above. The average middle class person with the above conditions can lose everything to medical bills because of them. Sometimes they can't be insured, or have to pay very high rates.
Alot of us are one terrible diagnosis away from financial disaster.
There does need to be some kind of safety net, and a better one than there is now. I don't konw what the answer is, although I've heard some creative ideas tossed around.
I do NOT think single payer is that answer.

When I was young we lived in a converted log cabin. Literally, it was a log cabin people had added extensions on, hard to even guess how old it was. It wasn't insulated but that log section held heat really well from the wood stove.
We guessed that it was the oldest farm in the area and probably the family the nearby road and area was named after, but could not find anything about it. By this point the logs were getting pretty chewed up by carpenter ants and termites, sadly.

I agree. It shouldn't be. But the high medical costs of some illnesses make it so. And understandably.I've heard there's some fairly simple ideas to combat that, I just don't understand why they are not implemented. One, let health insurers cover nationally, not by state. Can not understand why they can't now. That would make their risk pool so large, medical insurance would cost as much as car insurance, presumably.
I'm also (very cautiously) ok with a very limited form of single payer type federal plan for the very ill. Like a high risk pool, as I've heard it called. Which would be highly subsidized insurance for the very sick folks who need alot of expensive care.
And yes, this is alot like obamacare but in theory it would only be for the sickest people to qualify for.And no, before you ask, I don't expect the government not to F that up and the Dems to not try to expand it to everybody. I know better,But it's a nice idea, anyway.

After Obamacare they started seeing friends with treatable illnesses be put on palliative care, or having to wait months for things like an MRI. They could see the change in approach, and they started losing friends to treatable illnesses. Their suspicion was that this wasn't just to save healthcare costs, but to get their hands on their estates (estate taxes faster if they die earlier), and to make their housing available. My parents aren't paranoid, nor are their friends, but this became a common theory among seniors they knew.
We met someone who is maried to a nurse in an ICU, ad who sometimes assists in organ "harvesting". He noted that she will NOT go anywhere near organ donor status, as she swears that people get treated differently (worse).

I don't know how to fix either one.
But like I mentioned upthread, a friends dad drives me absolutely nuts with this shit. He's at the ER or urgent care clinic every time he feels even slightly unwell, not to mention his regular doctor visits.
In the last few months, he's gone to a hospital or urgent care clinic for a minor cold, feeling constipated, slamming his finger in a car door, and cutting himself in the leg with a utility knife (it was fairly minor. I would have slapped a bandaid on it and made a mental note not to use my leg as a saw horse when trying to cut a small notch in a piece of trip next time.)
None of which required medical care.

I believe that there are stories that she did NOT pass the same evals, told by either her classmates or instructors. You can take that FWIW, right?
One of my best friends from HS was an IP at Del Rio. He did check rides (not a euphemism!) with the first female pilot through that school. She cried during all of her check rides. As an IP, he said she should not have passed those rides (not just because crying is unmanly but because they were not successfully completed).
But she did. AF did not have carriers so she survived.
Now, I am a rando with a pseudonym on the Internet. That may or may not bolster the story for you, but the Navy stories sound a lot like what my friend told me.

Yeah. But there are other factors too. Like how insurance makes it easy for people to pay nothing, forcing the costs on everyone else (why do you figure it costs 500 for a vitamin? Because 500 other people paid nothing for it).
And then there's trade deals. Part of trade deals to places with socialized medicine is caps on prices for pharmaceuticals sold there. If you can't charge the full price or even close to it for your new drug Damitol, then someone has to pay the difference, or the company goes out of business. And of course there's just flat greed and the fact that hospitals insist on paying for top of the line equipment and facilities, so they charge to make up for it.

This is not un-true. Do we have any actual evidence on the "pushed through" part? If so, it's criminal, really. But guys have crashed and died landing on carriers, so just the fact that she did doesn't prove she wasn't passing the same evaluations as male pilots.

She was allowed to continue training after failing parts that would have washed a man out of the program. And they insisted on her being assigned to the fleet.
She killed herself, probably injured the GIB (ejecting out often causes injuries) and very nearly killed over a dozen deck personnel who were in a shelter just off of the flight deck.

- It said Levoff engaged in insider trading on three occasions in 2011 and 2012 that resulted in him making about $245,000 in profit.
