Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. More Challenging Problem.
1. Rd6 is obvious. It's the only move that stops Rc1+ by allowing the king to take the pawn on d2. Black will have to play (not necessarily on first move): ... Rxd6 after which white will eventually get g8=Q+ For example. 1. Rd6 Rc1+ 2. Kxd2 Rxd6+ 3. Kxc1 Rd8 (prevents g8=Q) 4. f7 is now winning. Somewhere within this thread, I'm sensing a deadly derringer.
He heard of a machine called the "Automaton Chess Player," which was beating every one who played against it. So he went to try his skill with the machine. He lost the first game, so with the second, and the third. Then, rising in astonishment from his seat, he walked around the machine and looked at it a few minutes. Then, stopping and pointing at it, he exclaimed, 'There is a man in there.' "Tell my friends," said Mr. Lincoln, "there is a man in here!" Posted by: Fritz at February 09, 2019 05:32 PM (wxZSX) 53

Did you happen to see the Coen Brothers film Hail Caesar!? I ask because their view of commies in the film industry is pretty benign. I always opted for the "play badly then have temper tantrum and swipe the pieces off the board just before check" gambit."
I'm good with that. Or the pigeon strategery - strut around, knock over the opposing king and queen, and poop on the board. Posted by: Anon a mouse at February 09, 2019 05:48 PM (6qErC) 107
First problem:
Too easy: Won't spoil it for everyone. Second problem: Looks like Rd6! is the only move. If the pawn takes the rook, then the d [awn is undefended. I the rook takes the rook, then the g-pawn can queen with check. After that it gets complicated, but I think the fact the the bishop covers the queening square of the f pawn, and the fact that the pawn on f5 prevents a rook from going behind it, means that eventually white will win both rooks for both pawns, leaving him a bishop up. No, I haven't seen "Hail Caesar!" Truth is, many of the Communists in Hollywood were quite accomplished film scenarists and wrote some robust patriotic films (such as Sahara). What I did note in Sahara was its internationalist sympathy, i.e., compassion for the lowly Italian soldier and the doughty French one. I think black as the dress has black buttons. BTW. Plaid was quite the thing in the 50's. Plaid thermos bottles, plaid lunch boxes(I had one), plaid dresses, plaid everything. My mom had a pair of plaid sunglasses that I loved. The only time I got to wear them is when I had the measles. I remember laying in bed in my darkened room wearing those sunglasses to protect my eyes. I loved them. Measles.Meh. I got to wear mommy's sunglasses. Yikes on the Payless shoes situation. I better get to the one near here and see if I can get more sneakers before they are gone. I hate dept. store shoe sections where they only display the tiny sizes and then try to steer me away from the men's shoes (hello - its just sneakers or hiking boots) when I tell them that works better for my wide feet.

The MoMee started 3 hours ago. It's probably getting sporty about now.

EASIER PUZZLE:
1.Bh5+! This is the killer move. The knight can't budge, because 1... Ng6 leads to 2. Qf7#, and 1... Nf7 leads to the same, or, more humiliatingly, 2. exf7#. That leaves Black with one move: 1... g6 2. Bxg6+ Bxg6 3. Qf7# I suppose Black could go 2... Nf7, but that still leads to the ultimate insult of 3. exf7#. So, who cast her vote in the Louisiana case? It was decided 5-4, which means one vote for each of the nine Supremes.

The D field is too crowded, so a few will get taken out. But by who?
Beto needs to take out Bernie early, to have a chance, but can't be seen to be doing it. So a Social Media war. Kamala needs to get Booker out of the way, and early. Klobucher just blew up over the revelation, never reported by Media, especially by MN Media, that she has worse anger issues than Alec Baldwin and has been viciously attacking her staff for years. No VP for you! Cui bono? Pocohantas has no shame. She made false statements to advance her career. In the legal profession, intentionally misleading authorities is a hanging offense. Expect more examples soon, and pressure that she get out. Pocohantas dropped out in 2012. I wonder what Hillary had on her. Posted by: Ignoramus at February 09, 2019 07:11 PM (1UZdv) 331

I want to know which of the VaMoMe attendees summoned the sheer ballsery to attend, costumed as a Virginia Democrat.
You know, blackface, plaid pants, all rapey and such. Doesn't matter which Virginia Democrat they'd choose to portray, they're all painted with the same brush. Mostly with black tempura paint. On their faces. But boy howdy, they sure all got a case of the red-ass now, don't they? Oh, and don't forget to wear a full Bozo the Clown outfit, but with a Klan chapeau atop the red curly mop. Ku Klutz Klown, the ultimate Democrat Icon! It's not too late, VaMoMe! Someone get to Hobby Lobby before they close, and buy All Teh Things! I've always enjoyed Bill Murry's work but one of his best, if not the best in my opinion, was as the shady funeral home director in "Get Low". Duvall is good in it as well. Well worth watching.

It's too bad Capablanca isn't playing chess in Casablanca. Wikipedia says he died in 1942 of a stroke.

Let me second--or third, or fourth--those complimentary comments on Melania. There are a lot of pretty women in those pictures. Melania blows them away like a Bugatti Veyron would fly past a Mini-Cooper and a Saab Sonnett.
She just looks regal. That word doesn't really convey what I mean but it is as close as I can come at the moment. The task makes me feel like Sam Gamgee trying to explain Galadriel. I remember Ayn Rand writing about a woman who's beauty was so stunning it was something to be worshipped, and I think she's something close to that. Anyway, it would take a guy with Trump's confidence to approach her because most men would see her and think, "That woman is not only way, way, way out of my league, I'm surprised we're on the same continent."
