The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“This stuff is really sad,” she wrote. “The GOP is so intellectually bankrupt that they no longer engage to debate issues in good faith, but instead seek to lie, distort, name-call, target, & destroy people/communities w any means possible.” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-Looney-TunesNY)

Quote II

Many of the seemingly compassionate policies promoted by the progressives in later years — whether in economics or in education — have had outcomes the opposite of what was expected. One of the tragedies of our times is that so many people judge by rhetoric, rather than by results. Thomas Sowell

"This is the fight of our lives. The fight to build an America where dreams are possible, an America that works for everyone. I am in that fight all the way," she said. "And that is why I stand here today, to declare that I am a candidate for president of the United States of America." Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Cherokee Nation MA

I guess PETA doesn't have any fur coats to vandalize or mink ranches to destroy.Toy Story 4 is evil in their eyes.

Pixar released a trailer for Toy Story 4 after the Super Bowl last weekend, and the film seems pretty innocent and family-friendly — unless, of course, you ask PETA. According to the animal-rights group, the trailer was actually “problematic” because the “Bo Peep” character was shown carrying a crook.

“Bo Peep’s look in Toy Story 4 is updated, but her shepherd’s crook still promotes exploiting gentle sheep for their wool,” the group stated in a post on Twitter. “This has no place in Bo Peep’s ‘modern’ look, Pixar!”

Living in the frozen tundra, I love wool.

Nightmares caused by true Nazis still continue to this day. Jewish family contends Houston Museum has their art.

A Houston museum said Friday it “stands by its ownership” of a painting on loan to an exhibition in Germany which is being claimed as Nazi-looted art.

Henri Edmond Cross’ “Regatta in Venice” was loaned by Houston’s Museum of Fine Arts for a show on the French artist at the Barberini Museum in Potsdam, just outside Berlin. Heirs of Jewish French collector Gaston Levy say it was stolen from their family by the Nazis and have filed a legal request for its return.

All good things must come to an end. At age 97 Prince Phillip surrenders his keys.

Prince Philip has ‘voluntarily’ surrendered his driving licence, Buckingham Palace says. The 97-year-old keen driver has decided to give up his right to get behind the wheel following a crash that injured two on 17 January. The Duke of Edinburgh was reportedly dazzled by the winter sun when he backed into a busy A road near the Queen’s Sandrinham estate in Norfolk and hit a Kia, carrying a baby, a mum and a grandmother.

Recently the State of New York considered legislation concerning gun purchases and social media use. Illinois has followed. Shocked, shocked I say, the ACLU opposes a specific piece of gun control legislation.

The American Civil Liberties Union firmly believes that legislatures can, consistent with the Constitution, impose reasonable limits on firearms sale, ownership, and use, without raising civil liberties concerns.

Which part of “shall not be infringed” does the ACLU not understand? Is it the “shall not” part or perhaps the “be infringed” part? Even most dim bulb people are bright enough to understand those mostly monosyllabic words.

But alas, the great defenders of civil liberties (the ones they agree with, anyway) apparently found a gun control bill they couldn’t find a way to support in Illinois’ new “social media” check bill.

The ONT has discussed this topic previously. Either marijuana is legal or illegal. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) has introduced a bill to remove pot from the list of controlled substances.

A new bill in the Senate Friday would mark a tectonic state in the United States’ drug law by legalizing marijuana nationwide.

“The federal prohibition of marijuana is wrong, plain and simple,” said Ron Wyden, an Oregon Senator who introduced the bill, in a statement. “Too many lives have been wasted, and too many economic opportunities have been missed.”

The new bill, called S.420 — get it? — would give the Drug Enforcement Administration 60 days to strike cannabis from its list of controlled substances. It would also institute a tax on the substance and set up a mechanism for retail permits and special labeling, like tobacco and alcohol, according to The Verge.

The ONT Musical Interlude

February 10, 1942, 'Chattanooga Choo Choo' by Glenn Miller and his Orchestra became the first recording to be awarded a Gold record. It was actually just a master copy of the disc sprayed with gold lacquer by RCA as a publicity stunt. The actual award recognized today as a Gold Record would not be initiated for another sixteen years when the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) borrowed the idea and trademarked the Gold Record. The first Gold single was awarded to Perry Como in 1958 for 'Catch A Falling Star' and the first Gold album was given to Gordon McRae for the soundtrack to 'Oklahoma'. via thisdayinmusic.com

The Special Snowflake, Social Justice Warrior division has a beef with real women. Transgendered broads all hacked off.

USA Powerlifting has issued a ruling prohibiting male to female transgender athletes from competing against women to ensure fairness in the competition of “strength sports such as powerlifting".

The organization stated that athletes who transitioned from men to women have an unfair advantage over their female counterparts due to natural anatomic privileges, including more developed muscle structure which cannot be eliminated by hormone therapy and medical reduction of testosterone.

Surplus cheese Surplus pot!

In 2018, Oregon’s legal marijuana producers grew more than twice as much as was legally consumed, leading to an oversupply that has 6.5 years’ worth of cannabis, measured by the psychoactive compound THC, on the shelves at dispensaries and wholesale distributors.

The latest data from Oregon, which adopted its legal regime in 2014, was released this week (pdf) by researchers working for Oregon’s Liquor Control Commission, which closely regulates cannabis from production to distribution.

Researchers see the marked oversupply as a win, because it suggests that legally grown cannabis is not leaking out into the black market. In 2018, legal producers in the state grew 2,000 tons of “wet” marijuana—product that is trimmed and dried before being sold or used to produce THC- or CBD-infused products.

School lunches may never be the same.

Man's best friend had one job to do. Man's best friend failed.

A burglar stole about $14,000 of jewelry and belongings from a home in Queens while a dog watched, police said.

The robber forced his way through the front door of the home on 31st Drive and Union Street in Linden Hill on Thursday afternoon, the NYPD said.

Missing Rescue Dog Who Traveled Through Lincoln Tunnel Dies
He took jewelry and personal items worth about $14,000 and then fled, police said.

Surveillance video shows a dog in the home watching the burglar. The NYPD blurred the dog from the video, but left its image visible in still photos.

Don't stick your dick in crazy and don't stick needles into your dick. Genius Award Winner.

Michael Forkner, 51, walked into the exam room at the Alabama Men’s Clinic in Birmingham and sat down in front of an employee named Tony. It was 2016, and Forkner had heard the clinic’s advertisements on his favorite sports radio station, ads that promised an easy, discreet solution to his problem. Sometimes he had trouble maintaining an erection during intercourse.

He assumed there would be options, pills or something, but he said that’s not what Tony offered.

“At first,” said Forkner, “I said ‘No way am I going to do this. I’m not sticking a needle into my deal.’”

Ellen and Robert Hughes expected the worst when they took their son, Walker, who had been on a violent rampage, to Loyola University Medical Center in Illinois.

39 I don't have anything about Prince Philip except I'm glad he finally saw reason and gave up the car keys.

The best story lately about Meghan Sparkle Farkle:

She and Harry visited a charity that helps ex-prostitutes build a new life. They had bags set up with some snack items to give out to the ladies. Sparkle gets a Great Idea, asks for a Sharpie, and writes a message of affirmation on each banana.

You are strong!
You are special!
You are brave!

The look on Harry's face was priceless. It looks like he's starting to wake up from the fog of infatuation he's been in since he met her. He's got himself a California version of AOC. Spoilt, headstrong, vacuous, clueless.

The charity later announced they did not give out the bananas to the sex workers. They tactfully used them to make banana bread instead.

Since he and Sparkle Farkle are both huge fans of Obama and they both dislike Trump, I sincerely wish them a long, long, long marriage.

81 I loved the sped up part of the one that caught on fire. Speaking of which; it sure seems to have taken a lot of time for the firemen to even hook up to a water line.

I've long suspected that the rule of thumb is to keep the fire from spreading and not actually stop the fire if you don't have to.

BTW they should sue the RR and make them jack up that crossing line.

And since it's a known problem why don't they hang a piece of pvc further down the road and a safe height to go under the bridge so that drivers get a warning? Like at parking garages.

Bear with me on this: Juggy McPower-bottom was supposed to be The One. But the powers that be bet on a dude who was lazy, dim, and just wanted to play video games. In short: Obama was, and is, an idiot. He could not even make himself look good in a 3000 dollar suit.

Sandy Donkey-Chompers is, to put it bluntly, far more charming, even though she is just as dumb.

There are powerful forces pushing this charming idiot into the forefront. Answer me this: Why did Fox News keep turning their cameras on her, as she fidgeted and squirmed, as if to receive her orders whether to sit, stand, clap or bolt?

101 So I saw Lego Movie 2. There's good and bad. There's a kind of obvious anti male/ anti toughness theme that is slightly annoying. It's not overdone, but it feels like SJW-light. The plot is hopelessly convoluted and it lacks a villain. It felt exactly like Pixar's Brave. Also: too many shots of the human children. Turns out it's a mixed race family which is totally a retcon of the first film.

The good: the music and the visuals are fantastic. Really top notch. Great songs, many of which touch upon the superficiality of Everything is Awesome and make fun of it in a fun positive way.

Verdict: A definite rental. My younger kids didn't love it. Not the home run that Lego 1 was.

161 I learned about "I Sleep in Hitler's Bed" when I was living in Germany, and I found a German-language version of it there. I didn't get too far into it, though I still try to read it from time to time. (Helps that it's all written in the present tense--those *^$*& German tenses). I read an article he wrote, too, about how the German publishing companies censored some of what he wrote, so my copy doesn't include everything that's in the English version. He's an engaging and funny writer, but he has a particular point of view--he's the son of Holocaust survivors who traveled around Germany looking for things to write about. That wasn't my experience. I was living there (in just one region of Germany, Franconia) and trying to integrate into the culture, getting to know the people in long-term relationships. I did not see the anti-Semitism he saw (or was maybe looking out for). I didn't hear people talk that much about Jews at all. What I did see was a tremendous amount of guilt over the Holocaust. The Third Reich was a regular societal topic of conversation, it appeared on documentaries multiple times a week, the history is drilled into the school-aged children... It's like they never got past that time in their history. This book was written before Germany opened their borders to all the migrants/refugees, and I suspect Germans feel way more antagonistic now toward those immigrants than they do Jews. But I also left right before the flood of migrants came in, so I didn't witness any of it firsthand.

Fact tidbit. All of those commercial jetliners MUST be able to effect a full takeoff, with one engine OFF. And this, at Maximum Gross Weight.

Not sure if that test applies to High & Hot conditions, or what the Density Altitude parameters are for that one....but your friendly Southwest 737 has enough oomph to launch on one, pretty much every time.

When empty, and a light fuel load, they're rockets on takeoff, if the pilot is so inclined.

That's not a climb rate I'm familiar with, but both it and the U-2 had ferocious initial climb rates, which were actually necessary to turn thrust into altitude, rather than airspeed.

Too much airspeed at lower altitudes would present too much air resistance, friction and heat. All of those were present in abundance at operational altitudes, but would quickly damage the airframe in the lower, thicker air.

Reading the literature, landing the U-2 has got to be one of the most challenging aviation tasks going. A bumblebee fart in the glidepath might result in a sudden gain of 20 ft. altitude.

Which is an exaggeration, but only slightly.

The problem goes back to the wedding. Her "people" thought she would be getting the Chuck/Di or William/Kate wedding, a wedding for the future King. What they didn't understand is that Harry is now 6th in line for the throne, and if Kate pops out another, even further down.

In the terms of the Royal family, they are just like all the cousins of William now. Good to have around in case of a dire emergency, but not going to ever be anything more than a Duchess/Lady/Baroness, basically a minor royal.

Even in GB, the wedding was not a big deal, and would not have been a big deal in the US if she wasn't a US citizen.

In the terms of the Royal family, they are just like all the cousins of William now. Good to have around in case of a dire emergency, but not going to ever be anything more than a Duchess/Lady/Baroness, basically a minor royal.

Some blame Manetho. His history of Egypt (mostly an accurate one, since people could still read hieroglyphs) talked a lot of sh!t about Moses and the Exodus.

I don't know if modern historians have figured out if they were based on true Egyptian legend or if Manetho was just running a colossal troll against the (Septuagint translation of) Exodus. But a lot of people believed it at the time, so Josephus had to address it.

Those J-58s couldn't be making anywhere near max power down low. They bypass doors (which basically coverts the engine airflow to where it's about 90% ramjet and only 10% turbine).... those bypass doors don't open till the aircraft is up around 2.2 Mach.

It's the high altitude, thin air, high speed effect of the ramjet which brings the speed, and the system is capable of generating fast enough airspeed to harm and destroy the airframe.

In the book Sled Driver, I believe the pilot drove his up to about 3.51 Mach, in order to avoid a Libyan AA missile, when flying recon in the El Dorado Canyon mission.

Every Commonwealth nation would have to approve of the change. Much like our Constitution, the succession is something that can't be changed "just because".

The last few years, Charles has taken over managing the Royal family's finances and has pretty much told all the hangerons that when he takes the throne, they better get used to not getting what they used to get. That is the other reason that Harry's bint won't get the title "Princess".

I've been trying to read Mein Kampf. Hitler says he barely even
heard of Jews before his down and out in Vienna years, but that's where
he became aware.

I've read Stirer's version of how he became radicalized but I'm
having trouble getting to Hilter's own version. He is, believe it or

306 How did the Jew hate originate?

***
My own analysis:

In Imperial Germany Jews were considered subjects like anyone else - years of war had forced some amount of religious tolerance on the Germans.

And German Jews fought like all other Germans in WWI.

When the Germans lost they floundered in reasoning why. The notion that their leaders had failed them, mostly on the diplomatic front, was too hard of a pill to swallow.

So after the war many Germans went looking for a scapegoat. A group with connections across Europe - into the countries on the other side of the conflict and a cultural identity that wasn't just German....and that group was Germany's Jews.

As an interesting addendum, Hitler supposedly had a bitter feud with a Jewish superior officer in WWI, and that he had gone from not particularly anti-Semitic to virulently so after the war due in some measure to this feud...

309 I wouldn't swear by it, but I think the evolution to monotheism is the origin of anti-Semitism. The Romans had some respect for the Jews based on the ancientness of their culture and religion, but their denial of the gods was a constant source of irritation and source of friction between the two.

The rise of Christianity also was a source of continuing discord. It originally began as a dispute between the Jews and nothing is more bitter than a family argument. Once the split was solidified, Matthew's language about "His blood be upon us and out children" did the Jews no favors.

I think there was talk of it back in the 70's because of the Queen's kids kind of being "playboys", and there was some talk of really cutting it because of some of the Queen's grandkids, but William and Harry's service and popularity has caused that to die down. Plus, they don't try to be seen doing anything lavish any longer. Thus the reason Markle didn't get a "Royal Wedding".

It has to be more than that, though, right? IMO, One can't sincerely read and believe the New Testament and still be comfortable being an anti-semite. (Although we do have blind spots.)

A whole chapter of Romans tells the gentiles not to get too big for their britches because they owe the Jews. I think people wanted to hate Jews and uses the Bible as an excuse. Just like they used it to justify anti-black racism even though the Scriptural version of utopia (for lack of a better word) is people of all nations worshipping God together.

339 I blame the Prussian Oriental.School, they reinvented jihad and when they needed a scapegoat for the end of the week ,- the Jews were convenient.

There are no Prussians in Fiddler on the Roof. Jews being an ethnic and religious diaspora have always been suspected of being more loyal to the tribe than to the nation.

Various kings (*cough* England, *cough* Spain) have found themselves indebted to Jewish bankers and found it convenient to find them all inconvient and kick them out.

Relentless persecution and accusations of "otherness" made the Jews band more together as a tribe.

The saddest irony of the whole sordid history, as I understand it, is that the German Jews of the 1920s were the most assimilated. They thought of themselves as Germans first and Jews second. Many had fought admirably in WWI.

They had no idea that the rest of the country would think nothing of turning on them.

From what I understand, the title of Prince/Princess also carries with it an annual stipend, and Charles and the Queen have been pushing for a shrinking of the number of Princes/Princesses because they feel the day is coming when the House of Commons will need to cut off how much the Royal family gets, and the best way to push that day way into the future is to start some austerity measures now.

371 Does anyone really think Michelle is gorgeous? She has looked nice sometimes, but really, I think people just feel obligated to say so or have convinced themselves that she is in the face of contrary evidence to avoid committing thoughtcrime.

My black African mother is very blunt about her um, lack of attractiveness. When she first came on the scene, my brother said his friend (and him? don't remember) thought she was the least beautiful woman he had seen.

I have a strong feeling some white liberal types have no idea what to do do about black women's appearance and just call everyone beautiful to gloss over the awkwardness.

For example, Lupita is cute, but growing up there were so many girls prettier than her. Yet, she's supposedly the greatest beauty. I love her skin, but I don't find the hype about her believable.

True.

The Parliament only appropriates funds to cover security, costs of discharge of official duties, and maintenance of residences used for official duties, or which also are open to the public.

By some measures JK Rowling is believed to be richer, though.

Meghan or Kate could use "Princess" if they wanted to, but they'd have use their husband's name. Kate would be Princess William, Meghan would be Princess Henry. They will never be Princesses in their own right, just like Diana never was, even though people called her Princess Diana, which was incorrect. She was Diana, Princess of Wales only because she was married to the Prince of Wales.

I don't think Michelle is gorgeous, but I think she could be a perfectly good looking woman if it weren't for her personality. There's a bitterness that shows through her features that makes her unattractive.

And the fawning of the press doesn't help. She's got a nice enough face (except for the bitterness) and upper body and we're supposed to overlook the fact that she becomes awkward looking below the waist.

In an objective world she'd be OK but we don't live in an objective world.

For me, it's the reverse. I don't think she's pretty in the face on account of the jaw area, but as a fellow black woman, I appreciated her lower half while she was in the white house. She had good hips.

Overall, She looked good for a woman her age. The media just couldn't let it go at that. They just had to go overboard.

And their ambivalence or hostility about Melania (an actual model) only underlines this.

FYI, those at the hospital were not amused by that sort of thinking, although I found out they cannot sell spare body parts. However, they make you sign a lot of stuff, so I might have willed them to trannies overseas. I'm just not sure.

William and Harry's dukedom's are higher in the pecking order than the courtesy titles of Prince that they go by. They technically didn't even have titles til the Queen gave them their dukedoms, though you could certainly count the HRHs, I suppose. Posted by: AmericanKestrel at February 11, 2019 12:47 AM (IDhUW)

Short version-

Douglas was effectively incompetent (strokes, dementia). Would not resign.

The other 8 justices voted for him, if they unanimously agreed how he would vote. If no agreement, the abstained him.

Utterly illegal, but they did it for a few months, until they realized the jig was up. Seven justices voted to suspend issuance of decisions until he retired. So he was forced to.

Then, Douglas returned, claiming that he could still hear cases and vote as a Justice on "Senior Status".

At the end, they basically had to haul him out on a hand truck.

Posted by: Miklos, as good a future Ginsburg historian as you're likely to get at this hour on a Sunday at February 11, 2019 12:56 AM (zCyNd)

504 > Can you give me the Cliff Notes?

Douglas stroked out and was in really bad mental shape.

His colleagues finally convinced him to resign by saying they wouldn't rule on any case where his opinion might change the outcome until he was gone.

He then tried to claim "senior status" and continue filing opinions. They took away his clerks and office, and finally ordered all personnel to have nothing to do with him.

Finally, all nine sitting justices wrote a letter telling him, basically, "Get the fuck out." and he left for good.

One thing that took me aback was the beginning of the show. Alicia Keys was the MC, and the theme was "strong women". 4 women stepped out with her. No problem there. But one of them was Michelle.

What took me aback was how the entire audience revered her. The close ups of the audience were like looking at drugged lemmings worshiping their god. It was more than respect, it was more like worship.

The only time I have seen the level of focus and intensity for someone political was in the 2016 campaign, and a certain Presidential Candidate that filled every stadium.

I then reflected on the current crop of Dem candidates, and realized that the Mooch can stomp them in 2020, just like Mr Two Scoops did to the Repubs in 2016.

Compare to the 93% negative coverage of a man who has defied the odds again and again. Constant battle is a strong teacher. PDT has been an amazing student. Look at the SOTU, how he controlled the toughest possible crowd. PDT succeeds.

Michelle will be dazed at the first tough question she faces. The press will scream racism.

I get asked many different ways, from people from all perspectives, why do I stay in western Wash, even though the politics here are so repulsive to me?

My answer is simple, I was born here, and the geography is amazing. There are still a lot of good people here. Rain? I have never owned an umbrella, it slows me down. A coat and a hat. Simple.

And there are a lot of people who love the geography so much that even though they disagree vehemently with me politically, we bond with the appreciation and enjoyment of the geography. A weekend around the campfire somewhere in the Cascades does wonders. Copalis Beach ocean fires at night are nearly a religious experience. Is Costco Kirkland red wine in the 1.5L bottle considered cheap wine? So be it.

I don't push it, but I have brought up the question why some of the most liberal don't own a gun. Their answer is generally something like, "you are solid and I will just get one from you if it ever gets that bad".

My answer is that they can stand behind me, but they better be cooking and cleaning, because nobody rides for free. But, no borrowing. Maybe a box or two of ammo, or some Hoppe's #9, but if you don't have your own firearm and know how to use it, dude you are effed.

I have got some of them thinking about reality and two have bought a handgun and been to the range in the last year. Little victories.

I will admit it is getting more difficult though, and some have chosen that the hatred of Trump is more important than my presence or friendship. So be it.

But bald eagles? In western Wash, they are plentiful. On some rivers, they are almost pests. And there are so many laws when you get close to them it gets ridiculous. But they are also never tiresome. And shutting off the motor and drifting down the river, while the bald eagles are flying everywhere, is simply amazing. And why I stay.

606 It is actually supposed to be a normal kentucky winter this week. Widely veering temps. Rain. Not much snow.

Now watch us get an ice storm and knock out all the power. That would be awesome.
