They play real notes in official atonal music. I have never been asked to play any, but I learned a partly atonal piece once in a choir class. On the poem, "Ozymandias", we really went atonal on "despair". We weren't too picky about the actual notes. Makes me shudder for atonal music with autotuned. I went to a few symphony concerts at a child or teen where the audience suffered through an atonal piece to get to the Mozart or Brahms. Sometimes you run across an interesting atonal piece. Der Trumpenfuhrer had the caffeinated Coke this afternoon, his twatters were ablaze, and as usual amusing. I know some of the tweets directed at foreign targets have been gamed out in consultation with relevant agencies, and I wonder about the stuff on Kim. Trump seems to be trying to pressure Kim to abandon North Korea's idiotic and dead-end ways in order to reap economic benefits. Just wonder if those sorts of buttons and levers are connected to anything in Kim's mind, or his advisors' minds.
In any case, Trump's approach is entertaining and interesting, especially compared to the (usually) oppressively dull and insipid crap generated by serious career types, on such questions. Posted by: rhomboid at February 09, 2019 10:32 PM (QDnY+) 94

Atonal music! I'm a musician and oh Lord, that brings back horrible memories. I was forced to study the 12-tone system by Arnold Schoenberg when I was in college. Even had to sing an original composition for someone's senior recital. Had to find one single pitch suspended over dissonant chords, and then rest for five measures and find a different one. Graham/GND
Graham: Meh. I suppose he's in "oh, I'm elected from SC, and I'm up this cycle" mode (though his anger about judicial nominations becoming mob lynching events is genuine, and of long-standing). Votes/hearings: sure, why not. I suppose there's some tiny, barely measurable practical value to highlighting what illiterate idiocy is on display. Though the fact that the country might benefit from this process, or need it, sort of says it all about the general degradation. As for votes, gee, how about some Senate votes on real, central, urgent matters? Lots of them. With lots of amendments styled to make Dems (and some GOP) walk the plank on specific questions? Ya know, the way the Senate *used* to be, all the time. Called "politics". And "differentiation". Mitch has successfully banished politics and choices from the Senate, with Trump's indulgence. If that doesn't change, the 10% chance of important things getting done drops to Zero. Posted by: rhomboid at February 09, 2019 10:38 PM (QDnY+) 119

"White Album" should have never been a double. I think the drugs were taking their toll by then, I think probably recreational pharmaceuticals might help with creativity but this effect is short lived and quickly becomes a liability. I actually like atonal music, as well as a lot of its cousin, 12-tone music. It speaks to me at a very profound level.
I understand why a lot of folks don't like either of those, and I agree--it's composers talking to other composers, the public is not invited. It's pretty much the beginning of the end for "serious" music. Still, it resonates with me and I enjoy it. It's dark and threatening and that kind of art and I get along very well. Yeah, no wonder no one wants to be around me much. Posted by: BeckoningChasm at February 09, 2019 11:00 PM (l9m7l) 196

I've always thought The White Album was way over-rated. Maybe 6 or 7 songs spread out over two discs are keepers. That said, the so-called Esher Demos where the band pretty much runs through most of the album in a stripped-down fashion is very good. It's included on the new 50th Anniversary Edition.

On a related note, some federal lands are designated "Wilderness" areas. The feds make some nods in that direction, for example, no motorized vehicles allowed. Not even chainsaws, for trail clearing. Only horse travel, or hiking on foot, is allowed. Bicycles, I suppose. The same nutbars bitching about oil drive to the Trailhead, wear nylon, burn gasoline stoves, and on and on and in. Stupid fuckers. Their entire existence practically is predicated on reasonably priced energy, and that means fossil fuels for many years to come.
But I suggest, maybe probibit cell phones. Flash lights, cameras, GPS, Nylon, plastic, electricity in any form pretty much. You want wilderness? You got it. Here's her pointy stick, and loincloth, have at it. If you get in trouble, get yourself out of it on your own. After all, that's what wilderness means. Well, I like Revolution #9. It fits into what is a very weird and brilliant LP from start to finish. As far as All Things Must Pass goes, it isn't as strong as the 4 Harrison tunes that were finished for the LP. Harrison got 4 tracks over 4 sides, which was on par for the catalogue (except Yellow Submarine, on which he got a greater share)... More Harrison would have been great, but how to fit in the song?

I actually like atonal music, as well as a lot of its cousin, 12-tone music. It speaks to me at a very profound level. I understand why a lot of folks don't like either of those, and I agree--it's composers talking to other composers, the public is not invited. It's pretty much the beginning of the end for "serious" music. Still, it resonates with me and I enjoy it. It's dark and threatening and that kind of art and I get along very well. Yeah, no wonder no one wants to be around me much. Gee - I'd really like to watch some movies with you guys. Lately I've really been getting into scores, which is much less than soundtracks, but still incredibly important. And I hear interesting things, but I have no idea how to describe them in musical terms. For example: we were talking about The Untouchables below. The train station sequence. Musically, there's the lullaby. Almost sounds like a musicbox. But then they bring in these strings - playing a single chord? And it's a weird chord. It's incredibly effective, but I can't describe it better than that. Posted by: Vertov at February 09, 2019 11:07 PM (98pFy) 223
And from dissonance, move on to the masterful use of minor chords with some Shepard scale type action to boot. Bach's Fantasia and Fugue in C minor, BWV 542, Ton Koopman's rendition:

As for Charles Ives, he's not in the "atonal" camp, not by a long shot. His thing was Transcendentalism. It had a spiritual basis. The "atonalists"--not so much. By the way, I have a bench in my front foyer made from the organ Ives played in Danbury at the Congregational Church--which I also played after it changed into a Lutheran church and the Congregationalists moved down the street. I also remember being in grade school and seeing Charles Ives' house being moved down Main Street to Roger's Park, cut in half. Something weirdly appropriate about that. I listen to things from all across the musical spectrum, and I can enjoy and appreciate all of it.
I don't say that so I can stick my thumbs in my suspenders and grin condescendingly. It's just what it is. Noise has been a part of my life since forever. Instruments create sounds, voices create sounds, natural forces create sounds. I've made a lot of (for me) interesting stuff just from recording frogs, or rainstorms, or a dryer on its last legs. It's all noise, and it all depends on how that noise is organized. The organization is what makes "music." Posted by: BeckoningChasm at February 09, 2019 11:27 PM (l9m7l) 288
I'd have to say, looking back, having immersed myself in a lot of 60s thru 80s pop music, many of the really famous bands - technically speaking - were a bunch of hacks, esp. in the 60s. Maybe especially in the 60s. Most of their studio cuts were done by session musicians.
The Beatles didn't do that. And it shows, in later years I think. They did play their own instruments, but never live after '66. I would agree there's more than just technical proficiency, but by the same token cranking an amplifier up to 11 and running it through a bunch of effects is kind of BS too, and smashing instruments. I mean the Who were cool and all, but... Posted by: Common Tater at February 09, 2019 11:27 PM (H4xk5) 289
davidt, that's how the Beatles were marketed at the beginning in 1962, no question.
I think part of the reason we still have so many annoying "boy bands" today is because of that. These band members' POV is, they see that the Beatles started that way, so... maybe they could grow into that kind of stature? Posted by: qdpsteve at February 09, 2019 11:27 PM (miE9U) 290

Frankly, Lennon's output was depressing. I liked a lot of the R&R stuff up until Rain a little bit, but Strawberry Fields for ex. is just dreck. McCartney was a musical genius in many ways, and I think Lennon was too in early years, but a big part of the skepticism I have was the hype that they were good, and that was all there was to it. Being For the Benefit of Mr Kite, the guy was off his noodle. Sad really.

Now on teh OT - a very lovely day in Michigan with clear skies and calm winds. It felt a lot warmer than it was. Made a little road trip to Ypsilanti to check out a hobby store, the Model Cave. A small shop with stacks of kits, tools, paints, and so on. Picked up some paint for an F4F Wildcat and then saw a kit for an F9C Sparrowhawk.
The Sparrowhawk was a little fighter, a biplane, of which less than a dozen were built. They operated from the airships USS Akron and USS Macon. They had the hook on the upper wing and connected with a trapeze thing on the bottom of the dirigible and were swung up and in. Totally wild and of course I got it. And one for a Curtiss P-6E Hawk in the colors of the 17th Pursuit Squadron from Selfridge Field here in Michigan. I think McCartney had the broadest general talent, that when Lennon was good he was very, very good and the most musically sophisticated for lack of a better way to put it, and that George and Ringo were probably replaceable overall, but perhaps added that grounding that steve mentions, as well as buffering the egos of LM.
It's easy to look back and wonder what the big deal was, but you kind of forget what an impact they made with some of their music. I actually prefer the "She Loves You yea, yea, yea" era pop stuff, but the Sgt Pepper and all the weirder crap was game-changing at the time. There's a YouTube guitar instructor, Andy, at ShutUpAndPlay, he's excellent and have learned a few tunes.
Zeppelin tunes are fun, and I didn't realize how mellow they were. I wouldn't say easy listening, but their blues stuff never interested me much. Brits trying to copy old black delta guys always rubbed me the wrong way. But Pages acoustic stuff is sometimes amazing. I leaned Bron y Aur, a real pretty acoustic tune in C6 tuning. It's actually fairly easy to play. This is what's surprising. Sometimes songs that I assumed were very difficult, aren't always that tough! On the other hand, some very basic songs in first position are very difficult to emulate. Lots of bluegrass tunes, like Doc Watson and those guys. But I have to admit that the irony of Keith Richards calling Sgt Pepper rubbish is hysterical to me, given Satanic Majesty's Request.... Posted by: Tammy al-Thor at February 10, 2019 12:02 AM TSMR is under rated. It has some clunky tracks, but it has some absolute gems as well. The problem with getting into TSMR is that it is approached like a pop album... like Sgt Pepper. It's not. It's... out there. Think Pink Floyd in 67 and the album really comes into focus... even the weird fucked up bits! Posted by: otho at February 10, 2019 12:07 AM (LkFnL) 363

I wish McCartney would have kept going in the classical direction; I thought his symphony or whatever it was, was quite good. That's where his talent lies... instrumentality as well as the ability to envision/imagine more complex arrangements, which he learned at George Martin's knee, no doubt.

348 Tammy, yup. 1962-1966 is a red double album, 1967-1970 is a blue double album (and features the photo of the Beatles that *would* have been the cover of their final album, Get Back, if things hadn't gone so sideways).
Abbey Road was a classy way to go out, agreed. Posted by: qdpsteve at February 09, 2019 11:59 PM (miE9U) I had both of those on vinyl, and they were my introduction to the Beatles. So you say. ------ Well I wasn't there, but by most accounts the "scene" was decidedly much less groovy after 1966, the Monterey Pop Festival might have been a high point. 1967 was pretty much a crisis for San Francisco. 1968 overall was a disaster, again by most accounts, and 1969 wasn't much better. Altamont was kind of a bookend, culturally. There were still some huge music festivals after that. Interestingly if you look at high school yearbook pictures in the midwest, long hair and drugs didn't take off in a big way until the 1970s! The good times were in '65 and '66 ... the "Summer of Love" was a media creation, or worse. By then the drugs and speed and really bad scenes started in earnest. The whole "counterculture" was anything but. The media was heavily involved, record contracts, magazines, movies, everything. It was a co-option of the Youth Movement. What I have found interesting about musical artists, is that they have about a 7-8 year window when they put out their best stuff, and then poof, it's gone.
And it doesn't matter how many albums that they put out or how few, it just kind of goes away. If you think about it, The Who, Queen, Beatles, Stones, and others had about 7 years of great to very good albums/music, and then the shit starting flowing. In ten years, if the Democrats have outlawed internal combustion, fossil fueled engines, I am guessing the farms of this country will be producing a fraction of the food they produce today. I would guess about 1/5th at the maximum. And without those same IC engines to transport it, I am guessing not much of that food will be getting to the large cities that are the main support for the Democratic Party. So, if the Democrats actually succeed legislatively, I am guessing they would be killing off about 80% of the people that support them, by starvation. I don't think that even qualifies as a Pyric victory.

Posted by: qdpsteve at February 09, 2019 11:50 PM (miE9U) I remember that Sunday night when the Beatles played on Ed Sullivan. Damn, when people talk about being 29-years-old here, I didn't know I was supposed to take that for realz. My lawn, with alacrity you will vacate. As for The Beatles, looking back, I think they peaked with their 45 'Paperback Writer', a wonderful, 'punchy' song. I also love the song 'I Feel Fine'; those opening chords are unmistakable. The Beatles had that 3-minute radio pop tune format down pat which affected radio music for years, and I think for the worse. Songs approaching 4 minutes might never get airplay or, like Yes' Roundabout, chopped to unlistenable trash. Posted by: RickZ at February 10, 2019 12:38 AM (Y8PSl) 397

Posted by: JB1000 at February 10, 2019 12:34 AM (aZ9CV) Pre-industrial farming would be LUCKY to produce as much as ONE to TWO percent of the yield of modern, mechanized farming. Not only for the tractors for tilling, planting and harvest. But the mechanization goes to irrigation, and the chemicals go to fertilization, weed, insect and varmint control, too. Cotton harvesting machines do the Ginning operation while in motion in the field, and spit out compressed and bound bales, ready for shipment. That's only one example. The starvation would be Kulakian in scope, but it'll likely never happen. Shootin' will start long before the de-internal-combustioning could ever fully be effected. So here in western Washington it has been snowing for three days and will snow all next week. And tonight, the furnace crapped out.
Can't figure out why. So I dragged our box spring and mattress into a far corner of the family room and have built a pretty decent little blaze in the fireplace in the opposite corner. Pioneer living at its finest. Nice and cozy. And now there is Early Times bourbon involved. Night-night everyone. Posted by: Skookumchuk@ymail.com at February 10, 2019 12:52 AM (k3g2v) Also in Western Washington, along Hood Canal. Early Times used to be one of my favorite bourbons, but I decided it was a little bland and have shifted to Old Overholt and Old Grandad (not technically bourbons, but in the same general class of spirits). Your camping experience sounds like fun. The power went out last night, but the house is well-insulated enough that we were able to ride it out until morning, and it came back on around 6 am. In the event of a more extended outage, or an outright furnace failure, we have a fireplace at one end of the house and a wood stove at the other end, so we would do something similar. And how do you find a suitable vendor who won't rip you off? Are you better off going to a local medical supply vendor and jumping through the insurance hoops, or just buying online and paying out of pocket?
I recently got diagnosed with mild sleep apnea and the doc recommended I get a CPAP. The first vendor he contacted wouldn't accept my insurance. The second vendor had someone call me and try to talk me into spending $200 up front BEFORE I even had a chance to choose a device. Posted by: Skip at February 10, 2019 04:27 AM (/rm4P) I am full of coffee and we finished testing the hydraulic bolt tensioning equipment so now I am at loose ends. Would you like to hear about medieval surgery? I downloaded a .MOBI copy of the Surgery of Theodoric, who was a doctor for some Crusaders for a time. It's very interesting; his techniques for treating injuries are very sensible and effective-- Clean it, dry it, cover it and leave it the hell alone. He discusses suturing in some detail. He's a bit more off the rails when it comes to internal medicine, as you might imagine. He says that things in the body have to be balanced, and the way to correct a problem in one part is to cause it to happen in another part. He also has his cart and horse backwards about pain-- he thinks it causes infection, instead of being a sign of the underlying infection itself. So far, very interesting. I learned a few things from that I didn't know: - Obama stopped construction of wall once in office - That the reason existing are so short is so that climbers would not get hurt. Secret Square, if you are still checking this:
Look at Philips Respironics products for CPAP. Both my Mom a nd my sister have used them. Mom for COPD and sister for apnea. You'll get them through medical equipment suppliers. They work through insurance. Some insurance companies require you to rent the machine, and some will allow you to buy outright. They try to force you into renting, because so many people get the machine, use it a few times and then stop, because they can be hard to get used to. Uncomfortable, etc. Your mileage may vary.
