Meet The PetMorons

We have two beautiful English Mastiffs, Elsa and Stella. They are 17 months old. Having two has been quite challenging at times, but, it is nice they have each other to play with. We sure do love these girls!
Our 150# lap dog Stella
If we’re not available, Stella lays on her sister Elsa! Love those squishy faces!-Erin

You have kindly posted a few of my fosters. I have yet another one. This is Jackie-O-Lantern. She was rescued Oct 31, hence the name. She was just a few weeks old and had several deep puncture wounds on her back, vertebrae fractures, Toxoplasmosis in her lungs and a huge hernia. She’s finally stable enough for surgery for the hernia and should be ready for adoption soon. If you are so inclined, support your local rescue, financially or by volunteering or fostering. It’s literally saved this sweet kittens life.
This is my foster fail (foster we adopted) Sammy. We just had his DNA done.

What an angel you are Lurker Leicester. My guess is that Sammy didn't think you failed at all. Hope the little kitten, Jackie gets a forever home soon. Thank you for all your work and your submission this weekend.

This is an albino enigma gecko named Dilly . Can't be sold because he is a rare species. Our correspondent, the wife of a veterinarian, notes that Dilly was looking pale and was not eating his worms. She was worried. Then it became clear that Dilly was shedding. Took the skin off his hands like gloves.
Ate his skin. Looks like a new lizard. - KT

I think many of us learned a new thing today, albino geckos. Who knew? Quite an interesting pet. Thanks for the submission KT.

I've been a lurker on the site for years and love the AoS Pet Thread. We retired, lost our minds, and got a puppy last summer after a 6 year hiatus from having a dog. (We actually chose a breed this time b/c we have 3 young grandsons and wanted a dog that is friendly to kids, other pets, and people in general.) Henry LOVES kids, especially boys. He is a rowdy, sturdy guy in frou-frou fur (excuse me, 'hair"). Don't be fooled - he is down with mud, wrasslin', playing chase, keep away, etc. He has been great therapy for us, and our neighbors all know Henry. They don't know our names and often did not stop to speak in the past, but now they do! Can't recommend enough how having this pup has enlarged our circle of friends Here is Henry channeling his inner Churchill and enjoying a "cigar": Cheers! - Kay

I'm not sure who is spoiled more, the grandkids or Henry. Love the expression in his eyes, looks like he knows mischief. Thanks Kay!

This is Molly Golightly. She is a six-year-old standard poodle. She wants me to hurry up and get home so she can race down to the lake and bark at the geese.
They will in turn form up and hiss at her.

Molly looks quite at home in the front seat headed home. Sounds like she plays nice and honorably with the geese. We appreciate you sharing this with us.

I'm a long time lurker.
I wanted to share the story of this beautiful cat, named Ghost
Ghost was part of a litter of three that were being raised under my son's house. Mom and two of the siblings were successfully caught and adopted, but Ghost was always able to avoid being trapped, and would never allow anyone to approach her. My son continued to provide food and water for her, even after the rest of her family had been removed.
When she was a year old, she was hit by a car. We assumed that she had been killed, there was so much blood on the street. Two days later, however, she reappeared, horribly injured. It took a week after her accident, but we were finally able to lure her into a trap and whisked her off to the vet. Her injuries were substantial: dehydrated, starved, concussion, broken jaw, split pallet, terrible sinus infection, injured eye, cracked cheekbone, and she had lost perhaps 1/3 of her blood. She was in the hospital for a full week, and was housed in my library, isolated from my four other cats, for six more weeks of care while she healed. It has been over three months since her accident, and as you can see she has made an amazing recovery. In spite of her initial skittishness, she was very quick to adapt to her people and all the other cats, and is now a valued member of the family.
I don't know how many of her nine lives she used up, but apparently she has a few left over! - Tony

Hi, Mis.Hum.,

I've been sitting on this for a long time, but I am procrastinating on a work project, so, why not now?

This is my absolute favorite picture of El Toro, my 14-year-old Pomeranian/American Eskimo/??? mix. He's wearing the cone of shame because he can't tolerate flea bites; he'll chew off all his fur and several layers of skin (mostly covered by the sweater). His fur grows like crazy, so I have to be diligent to shave him and stymie the fleas.

We wanted a ridiculously tough name for a little dog, so we named him "The Bull" in Spanish. In hindsight this was a dumb thing to do, because he's about the most stubborn thing ever. (I've already decided my next dog will be named "Obedient.") But he's also really darn cute, so he always finds his way back into our good graces. It's a good thing, too, because in addition to being hard-headed, he ranks pretty low on measures of doggy intelligence. Don't think he'd last a day in the wild.

Toro is super-lovable when he's not barking his head off at people, dogs, leaves, earthworms, and butterflies. He wants nothing more than to be by my side every breathing second of the day. We tried to crate him at nights when he was a puppy, and he'd cry all night (and/or pee all over our kitchen). I'd just gotten my second baby to sleep through the night, and it was maddening. Finally one night we were getting ready for bed, and I didn't feel like going through the work of setting up his pen. "Are you going to let us be if we let you stay in here?" I asked him. He just climbed under our bed--and slept through the night. He's been there ever since and thinks he owns the place.

I always want to name my next dog Dammit, Mrs. MH always says no, so maybe the idea of naming the critter Obedient as you are going to do will work. Are you sure that cute looking dog is that stubborn? We appreciate the story and photo. Thanks.

13 I am doing some year end stuff for my business, and trying to get ready for my winter camping trip into the Boundary Waters. Gear is all over the living room much to my wife's dismay. Dog is having a grand time sniffing each piece of gear and then laying all over my stuff. Dogs just don't care where they plop down.

I saw a show yesterday about herbivore dinosaur defense mechanisms. They opined that parasaurolophus, the large duck-billed dinosaurs resembling a kangaroo but having several feet of tubing extending across the top of the head and to the rear, used that hollow tubing to create a foghorn like bellow which, when combined with those of the rest of the herd, could create a sonic blast that could temporarily disable attacking predators.

18 My 2 girls (inseparable litter mates) used to love grooming. I swear they had to be reincarnated Hollywood divas. They'd turn inside out as I got closer to the groomers, and pulled at the leads to get inside. The groomer noted that they had to bathe them together, or they'd completely freak.
They could run for half a day on the beach and not be as tuckered out as they were after a trip to the groomer, and they'd crash for the rest of the day. Basking in their glowing beauty I suppose. They knew they looked good.

Not a day goes by I don't miss the heck out of them. Someday I'll be able to get a dog again.

Well, the NatGeo link didn't open for me, but I would rate it more believable than Global Warming. Much more so. The Global Warming alarmists want us to modify our behavior to our detriment and their benefit, and to pick our pockets clean. The dinosaur paleontologists simply want to understand dinosaurs better to satisfy their natural curiosity, and, incidentally, to entertain us. They don't have an anti-human agenda.

53 As to demeanor changes with injury and with names:

I was "gifted" with a cat as no one else in the building would/could take it. So I took care of him and fed him and made sure he could get out and roam a bit and had a warm and dry place to stay but he wasn't very affectionate. You could pick him up and carrying him around (I used to drape him around my neck and he would stay quite comfortably) and pet him but he was not into curling up in the lap or dancing around your legs when you'd see him. Then he got hit. Not too bad. Concussion bruising and a cut on his head. He must've ducked just in time. But after a few days in hospital and brought home he started cuddling up on me when I was sitting down or lying down. I think he knew HE OWED ME. Bigtime.

As to names: we got a nice tabby similar color as her mother who was named Smoky. So we named her Sparky. The cat was a hellion for about a month until we couldn't take it anymore so we decided to do a name change and started to call her Baby. It worked! She calmed right down and became a lap cat except when the dog and her would chase each other up and down our linoleum floor in the hall. They would get up speed and then slide into/under the bed in the room at the end. What fun.

I remember reading a bit of advice on a pet thread here a few years back: Never give a pet a name you would be embarrassed to use in public if you had to call or chase the critter: like "Dumbass" or "Katshit" or "Old Tuna Breath" or worse. Been thinking this week that a couple more potential kitty names can be crossed off my list: "Fairfax," "Alexandria," "Justin," and "Ralph."

63 Loved the photo of Molly Golightly. She reminded me of the Missus' and my first dog, Larry. He was about 95lbs. and of indeterminate breed (he was black with tan eyebrows and undercarriage, kind of a mix between a Golden Retriever and a German Shephard).

That dog was crazy about anything wet. We'd be driving past a river, stream, lake or mud puddle and he'd jump up and bark insanely in an effort to alert us to a potential water-fetch scenario. Often we couldn't stop, but the times we did only reinforced his obsession.

He was a great dog. Loved that fella.

87 Poor sweet little El Toro. What a funny yet poignant photo! I have a friend who also is going through the hellish "chew-and-lick-till-it's raw" thing with her dog who can't stop self mutilating. They've done the cone, creams, and injection route as well as changing the food, and she created a specially made "costume" to make the hot spots difficult to reach, but it's an ongoing battle.

My cat is also named Ghost. He's a neutered male, pure white, domestic longhair. Was semi-feral when I got him. He loves being petted, and will sleep on the bed, but most definitely does not want to be held -- much to my disappointment.

He is an excellent screen blocker, and expert at getting in front of the monitor when I'm trying to read something especially interesting, or if I'm in a particularly challenging game battle ...

The Indiana State Department of Health issued an advisory Saturday after a bat interrupted the Indiana Pacers vs. Los Angeles Clippers basketball game on Thursday, Feb. 7.

Since the bat is no longer in Bankers Life Fieldhouse, the rabies status of this bat is unknown, according to ISDH. They advise that a person is considered potentially exposed to rabies only if direct contact occurs between a bat and the person's bare skin.

Right now, the Health Department has no reports of anyone having direct contact with the bat.

Actually, there is a possibility that the bat might be rabid and people should be cautious. According to the CDC, most cases of rabies in humans in the United States in the last 20 years or so were from bat bites, raccoon bites being second.

Rinkart was performing dozens of funerals a day. It's used a Thanksgiving Day hymn now hymn but it really was in thanksgiving to the meager food they had and that they were still alive:

We had a cold snap and he is off pain meds and only on thyroid, low starch feed and taping pads to his feet. You are right that he is mischievous - makes us laugh every day (and we need that at this time in our lives and in history). His fur feels like long staple cotton when brushed

We got El Toro from a customer of my husband. She had a dog that was part Pomeranian (the ??? is whatever else she was--I never found out, and maybe the customer didn't know). Some white dog jumped their fence and impregnated her dog. We took El Toro to a bark-at-the-park event once and found some American Eskimos that looked just like him, except they didn't have brown ears. So I've always assumed that that's what Toro's father was, especially given that his temperament matches the breed, in particular the incessant barking.

Re: Prussian names, I suppose we could have named him Der Stiere.
