I find it liberating. The truth sets us free. National Review was on shaky ground and we now know that they are identical to the mainstream press and have zero problem with destroying Catholic teenagers just because some idiot on twitter says so.
It is kind of strange to put this in perspective though. Only a few years ago, National Review would have been a voice of caution, demanding that we reserve judgement until all the facts were in.
In fact, if the mainstream press went all-in on something, National Review would become MORE resistant, just to set themselves apart.
But now they deeply want to be part of the Outrage Mob.
Oddly, that sector is overcrowded, and while they may have a foundation, I can't help but wonder how big it is given that they were begging for couch-cushion money almost non-stop back when I visited the site.

I find it liberating. The truth sets us free. National Review was on shaky ground and we now know that they are identical to the mainstream press and have zero problem with destroying Catholic teenagers just because some idiot on twitter says so.
It is kind of strange to put this in perspective though. Only a few years ago, National Review would have been a voice of caution, demanding that we reserve judgement until all the facts were in.
In fact, if the mainstream press went all-in on something, National Review would become MORE resistant, just to set themselves apart.

Real vets know their units. Asking for MOS or stuff like that is fine, but the fastest way is to just ask what unit they were in. If the answer isn't immediate and reflexive, they're lying.

Of course all over the country there were plenty of souvenirs of the longest war of the 20th century, their independence fight against Ethiopia. Somewhere I've got pics of a BRDM or BMP that is now partly covered in bougainvillea (red), alongside the road in Elabored. Slipped while climbing on a T-55 hulk and damaged my camera, as I recall.

I've got a book or two somewhere that covers it, but I dont' know where. In the 90s I was reading up a lot on the periphery of the Desert War. Maybe Barry Pitt? Or he may have been desert only. I was working with a friend on the naval side of a board wargame. Never got it finished, though.

Well, it was a stupid war, stupidly fought, and squandered young American lives. It's not unpatriotic to criticize that war.
I am getting increasingly angry about it. I grew up in a rah rah household but I was about 8 years too young to be in any danger from it.
Now when I watch Vietnam things, whether it's CSPAN or the History Channel, I get the WWI feeling. What a waste. What a stupid immoral waste.

I still don't understand how the country put up with a military plan that intentionally pushed a real victory off the table.
Not only did we not invade the north, we only tried real level bombing in spurts even though we had seen it cripple Germany and Japan in WWII.
But then again I lived through the Iraq war as well so....

I sense that you critique the prosecution of the War because you love America and want her to win (in the largest strategic sense... even up to saying the war was unnecessary because it was not in our greater interests, or whatever), and just generally to not make a pig's ear out of a situation.

I think I might recall that now that you mentioned it. It is funny when you see people in movies and don't put together who they are even when you know the actor. For example, I liked Gardens of Stone, and loved Lonesome Dove. But it took me forever to realize that D.B. Sweeney played major roles in both films.

Interesting comparison. McClellan was a railroad engineer, McNamara was head of Ford. Both were really good at the logistics stuff (with McNamara and his team having pretty much invented modern Systems Analysis), but neither had any real military skills.
Some like to say that "business is war", but in actuality combat and business/engineering/infrastructure are entirely different things. Entirely.
Yes, the troops need supplies, and a transpo engineer or CEO type can help make sure they get them, but that's not the same thing as leading warriors.

Thanks for the reference to Sandmann's statement. He sounds like a good kid. Being scared is a given considering the situation. How he reacted was what I was trying to understand.
The point I was trying to make at the end of my original post was despite whether it was a smile or a smirk, in my perception it was embryonically heroic.
I'm sure his peers are grateful for his actions. He deserves a lot of support. We need kids like this.

That is very true and a real problem. I promise I don't want it, I think the whole secession thing was settled the hard way 150 odd years ago. But something has to change. To pawn, if you are still reading: this expression was not invented recently. There's nothing new under the sun. I once used it on an ex bf (along with a catty remark) who was threatening to slit my throat with my own pocket knife, uncertain whether it would result in my own death or diffusing the tension. I'm still here, so I guess it worked.
To Warai-otoko: I noticed the same thing when viewing the longer video. Reading young Mr. Sandmann's account, he says he smiled to let the guy know he intended no ill will. While the young man's written account was doubtless coached by a lawyer, in the moment, he showed remarkable composure for a 15-yr old. He stood his ground while remaining completely non-confrontational in the face of torment. Not sure I could've pulled that off at the ripe old age of whatever.

Death threats on this young man and his family are rolling in from those who tout their "tolerance" when, if they actually believed what they claim to, ought to be celebrating his bravery and ACTUAL tolerance.

Thanks for the thoughtful comment. I guess I don't write very well. I thought I stated that based on my previous exposure to that expression that the look was rooted in fear due to inexperience.
It may have been his first encounter in a physical confrontation. He overcame his fear/flight instinct which is laudable, especially at his age. He has promise as a leader in my estimation.
The fact that I made a correlation with my son's behavior was it enabled me allowed me a level of analysis to extrapolate of what the back-story was that led to that particular expression on his face.
I obviously could be wrong. I didn't expect the reaction of the "Moron Horde" would be mostly ad homiem. I come to the comments for insight.
I was just trying to bring my perspective and experience to the table. I new as far as commenting, obviously. New folks had better toe the line.

Not sure what went wrong.But I will say that I was very clearly trying to say that the damned dumb-ass media could not be relied upon to accurately report a legitimate lawsuit!!!!!!!
That is to say, that a WHOLE LOT more would be necessary if you wanted helpful public action from "the" 'fuckin' "media"!!!
They are a joke, ace. SERIOUSLY.
Just simply discard them (the 'media') as a factor in our public lives.
