74 German Expressionists practiced during the Interwar period, reaching its height in the 1920s. Many of these artists were Veterans, but all were trying to find meaning in the social chaos that hit Germany after WWI. Their biggest influences were Van Gogh and Munch, especially Munch.

German Expressionism has two major schools: Der Blau Reiter and Die Bruke. This is Die Bruke. Typical of their art is bright, clashing color and bold, dark lines. They had very negative attitudes about modern society and urbanity (cuz War) and were centered in Berlin and Munich for a while.

German Expressionism is probably my favorite modern art style.

87 > You know what I don't get? How do sailboats work when the wind is going the opposite direction of the direction you want to go?

Most sails don't work by being blown from behind (exception: spinnakers). They work by the wind blowing across the sail, in a manner exactly analogous to how an airplane creates lift.

That means that the boat can use wind anywhere from directly behind to well in front of perpendicular to the boat. The keel helps with this.

For the same reasons airplanes fly, lift.

When a sailboat is going upwind it is not being pushed by the wind. It is being pulled.

Tacking. You can't go straight into the wind but you can get enough energy to move towards it, so you go at an angle. Then when you've gone the wrong way enough you turn and catch the wind from the other side and angle into it again.

It's a whole series of zig zags.

98 In other SCOTUS news:

Alito excoriates the 9th Circuit today on Football Coach prayer case.

"...What is perhaps most troubling about the Ninth Circuit's opinion is language that can be understood to mean that a coach's duty to serve as a good role model requires the coach to refrain from any manifestation of religious faith--even when the coach is plainly not on duty. I hope that this is not the message that the Ninth Circuit meant to convey, but its opinion can certainly be read that way. After emphasizing that petitioner was hired to communicate a positive message through the example set by his own conduct," the court criticized him for "his media appearances and prayer in the BHS bleachers (while wearing BHS apparel and surrounded by others)." This conduct, in the opinion of the Ninth Circuit, "signal[ed] his intent to send a message to students and parents about appropriate behavior and what he values as a coach." Ibid. But when petitioner prayed in the bleachers, he had been suspended. He was attending a game like any other fan. The suggestion that even while off duty, a teacher or coach cannot engage in any outward manifestation of religious faith is remarkable."

Never sailed, but I read a bunch when researching my book about the Battle of Lake Erie.

It's called tacking. You essentially sail back and forth at about 45 degree angles around the direction you want to go, alternating back and forth to maintain an average straight line.

116 >>It's called tacking. You essentially sail back and forth at about 45 degree angles around the direction you want to go, alternating back and forth to maintain an average straight line.

That is how you get to a specific point but the science behind why a sailboat can go upwind is really pretty simple. Look at the shape of a mainsail. It is never truly flat, it is curved and that curve can be controlled on virtually all sailboats to some degree and some more than others.

Same same with an airplane wing with flaps.

Modernity and volksgemeinschaft were at variance. German civilization and culture were not synonymous--the former celebrated urbanity (as you note), 'Western' decadences, political factionalism (the notion of a Weimar government was always anathema to German political Kutur, which celebrated the constancy of a shared identity as opposed to the socially fragmenting effect of political discord); the latter celebrated regional heterogeneity united under what they considered a uniquely German identity.

Definitely true. Society has been conditioned that profit is bad.
making money is still important, but it's almost as if it's a byproduct of making the world a better place.

This is why I do not believe or subscribe to the noisy , corporate " give back to the community" bullshit.
Wanna give? Fine. Don't tell me about it, don't put social pressure on people who don't want to do it and don't make it an integral part of a nominal money-making enterprise.
It's a big lie. On one end you have a giant virtue-signal beaconing fake, forced "generosity" and "goodwill" and on the other end, those who do not wish to participate are considered sub-human and must be shamed and purged.

Corporate activism is a hair's breadth from open fascism.

Ever met a "for real" transgender? I've met a few, and believe me there was a real good reason why Johns Hopkins University Hospital stopped doing "sex reassignment surgery" back in the early 1980s. Fact is, I have yet to meet a tranny, either pre- or post-surgery, who was mentally or emotionally stable (and it seems Johns Hopkins was unable to find one either). We have enough trouble with the military establishment being used by the socialists (for the purpose of destroying it, IMNSHO) as some kind of half assed social experiment without adding these sexually dysphoric nutbars to the mix.

201 Willowing myself from the last thread, re: corps

The sense I get (generally speaking and not 100% obviously) is that making money, is not boastful anymore. In the late 90s, being a 25 year old millionaire was the goal. And when you became a 25 year old millionaire, you'd shout it from the rooftops. Now, it's like whoa, whoa, whoa man. Yeah I may have a couple of bucks, but I'm just like you. Look I even dress like you in jeans and stuff.

Read a LinkedIn feed regularly and you'll see a pattern. The vast majority of discussions aren't "hey look how successful my company is", it's all about "look how much change I am bringing to the world".

The corporate mentality has drastically shifted over the past 10-15 years. And the Gillette ad is a byproduct of that mentality. And it's not going to get any better any time soon. It's also why 95% of luxury car drivers in commercials are non-white males. And why every other commercial has a gay couple. And why Target did the bathroom thing. And why Dick's stopped selling guns. And on and on. The people running day to day operations of your typical Fortune 1000 company are SJWs or if not outright SJWs, don't want to run afoul of SJWs who they know can destroy a career.

The SJW mob isn't forcing companies to do what they do. The SJW mob is RUNNING the companies.

I have seen brilliant sunrises like that, with super saturated pinks and oranges. And water so still it reflects the sky like a mirror. Despite the bold colors, it evokes a peaceful, calm day on the water. Lovely.

236 Certainly not the worst art to appear on the AoS art thread, not by a long shot. I like the composition of it, and the shapes are generally ok. Nevertheless, this is not good art. The yellow/orange is loud and garish and clashes in an ugly way with the blue of the boats (similar to the painting of the "flapper"/dancer with her blue stockings and orange dress).

Then there are the boats themselves. The blue is a silly color for boats. It is also applied too uniformly. There is no shading. Lastly, you can see the black lines that were used to draw the shape of the boat - very sketchy and amateurish.

I've no idea if this painter can do better and is deliberately being ugly and primitive, but I would rate this 3 or 4 out of 10.

238 As others have pointed out, in sailing (unless you are going almost dead down wind) the drive is akin to the lift of an airplane's wings. And the driving force is the forward (to the wind) edge of the sail, on the side away from the wind. The wind there is moving faster than across the face of the sail which is toward the wind.

So the vector is really at an angle from the direction the boat is headed. The hull, and especially the keel or centerboard, redirects that forward, although some sliding does occur.

You don't really get to 45 degrees, though modern sailboats get pretty close. In earlier times there were occasions where ships just couldn't go upwind at all, if conditions were wrong. So they had to wait.

It's funny but I was looking at some photos and articles about WWI the other day and the work of the German artist Kathe Kollwitz was mentioned. Posted by: Tuna at January 22, 2019 10:10 AM (jm1YL)

Kathe Kollwitz's work is amazing and so passionate. I've mostly ever seen her prints and illustrations. I'm unsure if she did any other media. Her personal story is so sad and it shows in her art. She would lose a son in WWI, a grandson and her husband in WWII. The latter, if I remember right, was killed by Nazis. For me, her most jarring work is "Woman with Dead Child". Just heartbreaking.

Let's be honest, the more numbers there are the more "radical" you can be. Most justices aren't Thomas who is more than happy to completely scrap something. And Thomas may not be on the Court long if Trump wins reelection.

Agree - I don't think media advertising sells shit anymore, Corp's do it because they're desperate to keep up an "image", and all their pals in the media world who kick back parts of the ad fees to the ad buyers need the money. But that's the big fatal flaw in the entire Media's - all types - Business Plan - the central idea, that advertising brings customers brings profits, is failing, but no one will admit it because it would mean admitting they are throwing away huge chunks of their shareholders money.

324 While I don't trust Roberts either, I think many overlook two things about his ACA ruling.

1. He upheld O'care on statutory, not constitutional grounds. Yes, this was BS, but it didn't rewrite the Constitution.

2. On the Constitution he actually got something right, in that his ruling did say that the Commerce Clause did not authorize what the government was doing. (Which is why he went with the "tax" argument.) And he actually got the libs to sign on to that.

So, in a limited sense, there was a small nugget of gold in the pile of shit. I'm not denying the shit he served us, but it's worth recalling the nugget.

386 364 I like blended scotch. It's generic, but also a good introduction to the idea.

It's good in its own right. Takes a lot of skill and knowledge to make a consistent blend.

Single malts are good for the character you mention, as well as some distilling/aging techniques that aren't fully practical on a large scale (The Macallan, for instance).

That's the other aspect. The skill to create a consistent taste across dozens of scotchs that change from year to year is a highly admirable skill.

I'd go so far as to say (I'll probably get pushback here) that there should be some sort of federal oversight, and certainly federal law requiring this. You shouldn't need to file suit against a state to make sure it isn't actively enabling voter fraud, especially given that votes relating to federal elections affect us all, duh. We all have standing to demand this.

Won't hold up. All it shows is his pessimism.

If Will were an "establishment tool", how do you explain his contempt for both Bushes, which he repeatedly expressed? His opposition to "nation building" in Iraq? His hostility, from day one, to neoconservatives?

The truth about Will is that he was always idiosyncratic, and often off the reservation. That is clear. My own interpretation is that he, in his dotage, has become a caricature of himself in this regard. But his current posture no more invalidates what he wrote back when he was interesting than does P J O'Roarke's apostasy make his old writings any the worse.

Um, I disagree. Virtually all corporate plans were forced to increase premiums shared by the employee, reduce choices of plans and institute huge deductibles with offerings of employees able to put money into HSA's to have non taxed money available to pay said deductible.

Most corporate plans, including the one I have, have minimum deductibles of at least $2500 per person. Our per month premium rose to almost double what it was four years ago.

So most assuredly, people with plans at work know what Obamacare did to insurance plans.

Most hated Laphroaig, but a few loved it. But it never failed that one of them hit home. (Again, I don't recall it ever working with girls. Certainly not with my wife.)

You use a triangular sail to catch the wind on part of it and let it slip around the other, and zig zag back and forth very slowly. As long as you can catch just a little bit of the wind going past you on the back of part of the sail as you turn to the side of it, you can move forward. Its a laborious process, but easier than rowing.

But I suppose when you've dumbed people down nearly to the level of drooling imbeciles who, when asked "Where does electricity come from?" and they answer "A wall outlet, DUH." you can sell them anything. It doesn't even have to work properly or be an improvement over existing technology.
