Watergate by Any Other Name: A Blistering Take on Obama's Minions -- Clapper, Brennan, Comey, Lynch, Yates, McCabe, Etc. -- Breaking the Law to Target a Rival Presidential Candidate With an FBI Criminal Investigation That They Pretended Was Not a Criminal

They pretended it wasn't a criminal investigation because the law forbade them from conducting a criminal investigation, given that they had no actual crime to investigate.

So they falsely -- illegally -- framed it as a "counterintelligence" investigation, but this was always a sham; the entire project was to find a crime that they could then launch a criminal investigation over.

The liberal media is portraying this admission that the FBI broke the law as some kind of vindication that their conspiracy theories must be true, because, hey, why would people break so many laws to investigate someone for a crime unless they were rilly rilly sure they'd find a crime eventually?

The Times breathlessly frames its story as the revelation that Trump might have been "secretly working on behalf of Russia." Right on cue, the anti-Trump fraternity went into full-swivet mode. Probably the most comical contribution to this almanack of rhetorical incontinence was written by Max Boot, who offered "18 Reasons Why Trump Could Be a Russian Asset." Reason number one: that Trump, the head of a multi-billion dollar real-estate development company with interests all over the world, had business dealings with Russia. Excellent, Max!

In fact, though, what the Times story revealed was simply that, pace repeated assurances by James Comey, Trump was the target of the investigation from the beginning. As McCarthy notes, "the only thing the story shows is that the FBI, after over a year of investigation, simply went overt about something that had been true from the first. The investigation commenced during the 2016 campaign by the Obama administration--the Justice Department and the FBI--was always about Donald Trump." Moreover,

The FBI and DOJ knew this would be controversial--the incumbent administration spying on the opposition campaign in the absence of corroborated evidence of a crime.

Let's pause to ponder that last bit: "spying on the opposition campaign in the absence of corroborated evidence of a crime." "Controversial? You think? How about nefarious and probably criminal? Richard Nixon is unavailable for comment.

In a way, you have to admire the cunning of the Obama minions. Faced with exposure of their "controversial" tactic, they went to work. "[T]hey designed the investigation," McCarthy explains,

in a way that allowed them to focus on Trump without saying they were doing so. Before Trump was elected, they papered the files to indicate that they were focusing on the Trump campaign or people connected to it, like Page and Papadopoulos. This way, they could try to collect evidence about Trump without formally documenting that Trump was the target.

In other words, we are staring into the bowels of the biggest political scandal in the history of the United States. Americans pride themselves on living in a republic in which the peaceful transfer of power is a hallmark of our political life. But what we have here is an effort by one administration to thwart that process. Remember: there was no crime. There was always only the Steele Dossier, that rancid pile of slander that was paid for by Trump’s political opponents. That was the stated basis for the FISA warrants: uncorroborated rumor instigated and circulated by the Clinton campaign.

In other words, they broke the law, and they deliberately broke the law, and they concealed the truth of what they were doing (pro-tip: righteous men do not have to scheme to "frame" their actions in a light that appears to be legal; they can simply state what they are doing without pretense) and now the left, and David French obviously, are praising them for having been cunning criminals and coupists.

Update: Oh, here's a surprise. The FBI continues refusing to release coupist James A Baker's Congressional testimony while, get this, leaking helpful-sounding parts of it to their media friends who they know will give it the right spin.

84 First thing Barr needs to do after sworn-in as Attorney General is fire the chief of the FBI (cannot recall his name at this micro-second).

Second is recommend a new FBI chief to PDT, someone who has never worked with or for those straight-shooters Mueller and Comey, and who will promise to re-tool the FBI.

Posted by: Gref at January 16, 2019 07:03 PM (AMIL/)

85 I see last Friday's NYT Article as a trial balloon for this:

(1) Mueller found nothing criminal about Trump and Russia (there is and never has been a crime by the name of "Collusion").

(2) So, Mueller is going to issue his report that will say, yada yada yada, Trump did not engage in treason or work with or on behalf of Russia to influence the 2016 election.

(3) But, the ALLEGATIONS that he did were SO serious, Obama's administration just had to conduct electronic and human surveillance of the Trump campaign.

(4) So, nothing to see here, and the system worked! It was totally ok that the US government under Obama spied on the Trump campaign.

That's what the NYT article is really saying here. Put another way, the real story is and always has been that Obama used the vast resources of the FBI and CIA to spy on the Trump campaign during the election. The question has been whether that spying was justified.

Dems have always answered "Yes," because Trump treasonously conspired with Russia to effect the election.

Now, we are going to learn that "No," Trump didn't do any of that. So Obama's justification is complete crap, the surveillance was illegal, and this is the biggest scandal in US political history.

But no, no, no the Dems will howl. Even though there is absolutely no truth to any of it, the spying was STILL justified, because the allegations if true, were so serious. THIS is the best they have after Mueller finishes his anal exam of everything Trump and despite all expectations to the contrary, comes up with absolutely NOTHING that will retroactively justify the actions taken by the Obama administration.

BTW - I only partially blame Obama. The prime mover behind all of this wasn't a "rogue" DOJ, CIA and FBI. This entire charade was a Hillary Clinton op to gain real-time surveillance of the Trump campaign, and the Dossier and everything else was supposed to get buried when she won.

But she didn't, and Trump and the world was going to find out about it, so they delayed the inevitable as long as they could via the Mueller investigation, hoping in vane to find SOMETHING to justify it all, but they rolled snake eyes. Now the NYT is taking the lead on putting lipstick on the pig.

134 BTW - I only partially blame Obama.

Posted by: RichardWindsor

The only thing about your excellent summary is that I DO blame Obama, and he was President and responsible for the vast, VAST malfeasance and criminality of the FBI, the State Dept (that hid their complicity in sending classified information to Hillary's private server), the CIA and the rest of the intelligence apparatchniks. Obama knew of and APPROVED Hilary's illegal private server.

147 This is magnitudes worse than Watergate, to put it mildly. This is a Republic-ender and this nuclear-armed strip mall/Zombie Nation isn't our country or even a legitimate nation. The coup happened long, long ago. It's not an insurrection at this point. The overthrow is a fait accompli and absolutely no one is under any obligation to lift a finger to assist or finance this junta, although it will use violence and criminality to bring to heel anyone who dares not.

I always thought it would take an economic collapse to bring about mass civil strife but that was wrong. To paraphrase someone (likely a liar but it's still a good line), "they were at war with us but we weren't with them." What it would take to restore some semblance of a republic--mass arrests and military tribunals, for starters--simply won't happen and possibly could not happen.

It's not going to get bad. It already is bad and only will get worse, and anyone who doesn't realize they live in an outright tyranny either is nostalgic, stupid or delusional. It was a nice ride but it's over. The cucks realized this long ago and this explains their supine behavior.

150 85 I see last Friday's NYT Article as a trial balloon for this: ....
=========

On my point that the Dossier was never supposed to see the light of day, nor any of the FISA warrants or other surveillance tactics used, remember the critical data point that Buzzfeed first published the Dossier on January 10, 2017, four days after Comey briefed Trump about the investigation at Trump Tower on "Russian Interference." Trump will be sworn into office 10 laters, on January 20, and will then be able to learn EVERYTHING that happened.

Think from FBI point of view. Trump is days away from learning about the scandal that was never to see the light of day. They're completely f--ked. Unless..... Unless they can delay him finding out about it... or even better, what if there is SOME kernel of truth about something in that Dossier? What we need is a special counsel investigation. Once that is in place, all of this can stay behind the "paywall" of confidentiality and "ongoing investigation" and hey! Maybe we'll even be able to establish something that's actually true that will retroactively prove that everything we did was right!

Abhorent. Criminal. People need to go to jail.

152 Once again, this is NOT a scandal at all, much less the biggest ever. For something to be a scandal, it must be widely broadcast and denounced. What Rep. King (supposedly) said is a scandal. Roseanne Barr's joke about Jarrett was a scandal.

Watergate was Nixon trying to stop leaks from the deep state to the dems. Watergate was nothing that the previous adminstrations had not done, and was not considered SOP in DC.

Watergate was revealed by a disgruntled FBI ass who was bitter that Nixon was trying to clean up their bullshit -- the exact kind of bullshit we are seeing today.

The real watergate scandal is that the post and the nyt did not disclose that feldt was a disgruntled fbi ass who was bitter about Nixon cleaning up their little racket. Had that been publicly known, Nixon would have gotten a fucking third term.

If Sessions had nipped this in the bud at the very beginning, wouldn't it be an unpleasant memory by now, instead of this ongoing albatross? That's my feeling.

If there is an upside to this incident, it's to shine a light on who the deep staters are and how many by enticing them to reveal themselves. If the Augean stables of federal agencies are ever cleaned out, this might be useful information.

Posted by: Gref at January 16, 2019 07:10 PM (AMIL/)

And if Mueller came back and said "Trump is exonerated, the real criminals are" and lists everyone from Hillary on down the Left will say that Putin and Trump are blackmailing Mueller. No matter how much proof you have it will not satisfy a fanatic, and the Left are in a religious fervor.

181 "hey, why would people break so many laws to investigate someone for a crime unless they were rilly rilly sure they'd find a crime eventually?"

The recent uptick in Muh Russia!-stories is an attempt to provide political and legal cover for the criminals involved now that Mueller is sputtering and Barr is coming in. There might--might--be some accountability at last, and they are trying to provide a plausible rationale for their coup attempt.

Posted by: The Gipper Lives at January 16, 2019 07:24 PM (Ndje9)

182 I believe Mueller's report will not say Trump did not engage in treason and collusion...I think it will say they found no conclusive evidence one way or the other.
=======

Agree with this. They will say this, and that Trump didn't file a building permit in 1981 and once tore the warning label off one of his mattresses. But the conclusion will nonetheless be that they couldn't prove anything criminal.

The next logical question, then, is was the government justified to conduct this investigation at all in 2016? Dems will say "yes" - because of "credible" evidence that was so serious it justified spying on Trump and sharing that information with a yet-to-named third party (want to bet that third party was associated with Hillary Clinton and that all of the information the government collected was shared more or less in real time with the Hillary campaign?)

But this is the crucial question. Was it justified, even if proved wrong in the end? And, we circle back to the Christopher Steele Dossier, produced and paid for by Hillary Clinton and the DNC. It's laughable, as it always has been.

205 I know many of you are only 29 and may not remember Watergate. The "smoking gun" that forced Nixon to resign was a tape recording in which Nixon discussed telling the FBI that the Watergate burglary concerned a CIA operation and so therefore the FBI, which generally had jurisdiction on domestic matters, would not have jurisdiction to investigate. Although that idea was not implemented, merely discussing it was enough to force Trick E. Dick to resign.

Posted by: Anonosaurus Wrecks at January 16, 2019 07:33 PM (f9AnO)

206 All those years of FBI propaganda movies for nothing.

As you all surely know, for many decades -- up until fairly recently -- Hollywood has happily cooperated in occasionally releasing pro-FBI propaganda, generally as part of a "mystery" or "thriller" film, with heroic or sexy FBI agents tracking down hoodlums/gangsters/criminals/serial killers/drug dealers/terrorists/bad guys of every sort.

If you read behind-the-scenes books about the history of Hollywood, you learn that many of these films were made at the behest of the FBI, either during Hoover's reign (for the anti-gangster flicks) or after his reign (the drug-dealer/terrorist/serial killer genres).

All to propagandize America to be ultra-in-favor-of -- even in awe of -- the FBI.

70 years of propaganda down the tubes with these revelations, that the FBI is simply a cog in the liberal Deep State tyranny. And probably always has been.

Contrast those milkers with these of my young female assistant, here. Nicely proportional. Entirely natural. Her breasts practically shout 'high character.'

By his handling of the matter of the large breasts, Donald Trump revealed himself as a man of low character and a fortiori forfeited any standing he might otherwise have had to object to being investigated by the FBI as a threat to national security. The FBI could do no other. Quod erat demonstrandum. Res ipsa loquitur. Corpus juris secundum.

The Watergate break in was masterminded by John Dean, to get the "date book" that had the identity of a high paid Call-girl that eventually became Dean's wife.

The people that did it "thought" that they WERE plugging some leak or something.
Nixon didn't even know about it, and if he hadn't been so paranoid with the Media, should have said so right from the beginning, because Dean was all ready to throw Nixon under the bus to save his own scrawny neck.

I know almost nobody is going to be happy with the outcome including me. Sentences will be too short, it will take too long, yada, yada.

But it is just false to say things aren't happening. The Mueller investigation is a really just the investigation started by Comey and company in mid-2016. He just picked up what they started. That is over a year before the counter investigation started and really nothing but some ancillary indictments have come from that. They only seem big because the entire worldwide media is broadcasting them constantly.

And if we are comparing sentences Papadopoulus served 14 days for lying to the FBI. And his story is far from over, see today's leaked testimony.

I wish it would go faster as much as anyone but things are happening. I just showed you a case of the media just discovering yesterday that an investigation that started in July of 2017 is actually happening. How many more of those might cases might be happening?

In the last few days, partial transcripts of the Congressional testimony of Lisa Page, Andy McCabe, Bruce Ohr and George Papadopoulus have been released. They provide a significantly different picture than what has been reported. Anyone read them?

It's the single biggest political scandal in the history of this country. It includes numerous foreign allies. I wish it would go faster. It isn't. I also want a pony.

But, due to the volume, breadth, and gravity of the scandals under "that alien in the White House", Obama, it's sadly necessary to set out a sort of taxonomy of mega-scandals.

They sometimes overlap. Some are significant, if not yuuuge. A few *all* qualify as greatest scandals in our history, sort of a 3-way tie for first.

271 While we are in the Spirit of things, some wisdom from the 109th: I like the subtlety of #9

8 Let his days be few; [And] let another take his office.

9 Let his children be fatherless, And his wife a widow.

10 Let his children be vagabonds, and beg; And let them seek [their bread] out of their desolate places.

11 Let the extortioner catch all that he hath; And let strangers make spoil of his labor.

12 Let there be none to extend kindness unto him; Neither let there be any to have pity on his fatherless children.

13 Let his posterity be cut off; In the generation following let their name be blotted out.

273 The solution to all this really isn't all that complicated, but would be very difficult to produce.

Simply identify two or three from the cabal who are "players" but whose testimony we can do without, and gain the same from others.

For example, a Lisa Page vs. Hillary Herself.

Assassinate the three "candidates", while directly messaging (from burner emails & proxy everythings), ALL of the Primary Players, that they're getting closer to finding themselves on the "active" list with every underling felled.

Keep up a "once a week" pace on the corpses.

I'd venture it wouldn't go past four weeks before one of more of the "Players" proffered to "Make a Deal to Tell All", in order to save their hide.

That happens, it'll be like the fall of the Jegna blocks, only much more fun to watch.

Mass psychosis is ripping our country apart. Two dudes buttfucking or two girls licking each other is relabeled "marriage". Male children are encouraged to 'identify' as girls and vice versa and are given drugs by freakish sick doctors to warp their body chemistry into something horrible.

California is the epicenter of lawlessness and is busy robbing America to pay for criminal's health care and guaranteeing the human right to live outside and shit on the street.

Morality is illegal. Heterosexuality is shameful. Christianity principles are shunned as "repressive".

Contrary to Watergate, in the face of these massive, pervasive, unprecedented scandals ..... literally not a peep of outrage, or interest, by the party on whose side it occurred.

Obviously understating it. Active, vigorous, CONTINUING, efforts to suppress any investigation of these mega-scandals. By the Dems.

AND - lackadaisical verging on complicit "pursuit" by the target of the violations, the GOP.

All of this has nothing close to any precedent in our history. It illustrates a total and specific failure of one of the unspoken yet critical design features of our system - that division of power will result in the policing of power by different factions/institutions/branches.

The jealousy of power the founders relied upon to help glue the system together and prevent imbalances has largely failed. Not just, spectacularly, in the case of all the Obama scandals, but also in the judicial coup that started when Obama was still a mediocre school kid.

Really, there are a lot of positive things happening out in the world. I know this gets us all DOWN, and it certainly gets me down, but the world will go on. Retribution, in some form or another, will occur. We may not recognize it at first, but it may be that Hillary, Bill, Obama and Michele and the rest will live a long, miserable life, and see all their stupid ideas come to be rejected, and realize at the end that it was all a big waste.

390 All of this has nothing close to any precedent in our history.

It's probably amazing the system worked, kind of, for as long as it did. No matter how flawless the blueprint, it's garbage in, garbage out. And anyone involved in government is garbage and they will fuck it up.

407 Some major differences between Watergate and Obamagate:

*The Watergate break-in was completely unnecessary as far as winning the 72 election. Nixon was going to cruise to re-election, whereas Hillary couldn't even win with the Coup behind her.

*The Watergate plan was very limited within the administration. Most of the conspiracy came later in the coverup. Whereas, this coup was government-wide from the start: The Oval Office to the CIA, FBI, DOJ, State--even foreign spy agencies, making it a world-wide effort.

*Nixon was opposed by an adversarial press. But Obama is being shielded by a poodle press--some of whom were actual paid agents of the DNC's Fusion GPS. Imagine if Woodward and Bernstein had secretly been on Nixon's payroll. Imagine if NBC had hired fired the FBI Director to do commentary.

*Mueller has been able to guard the Obamagate conspirators by running a rear-guard action and by having first claim on witnesses, and the ability to fend off questions with his Fake Investigation. Can you imagine if Nixon had been able to twist Watergate into a Special Counsel investigation of Democrats?

Ironically, the one common denominator is Hillary. She used the Watergate Committee to hide documents and to further her presidential ambitions for Ted Kennedy. She was fired for her misdemeanor which is why she never speaks of it.

And nobody will care. And nothing will happen. All the while - you will tell everyone why they need to care. While nothing happens. And nobody cares. While you tell us all why we should care while nothing happens.

Chief - you've become the cat that knows the price of everything and the value of nothing. But let's understand each other - you absolutely have all the prices down cold. Right down to the penny. Your mastery of price is beyond question.

All of this has nothing close to any precedent in our history. It illustrates a total and specific failure of one of the unspoken yet critical design features of our system - that division of power will result in the policing of power by different factions/institutions/branches.
Posted by: rhomboid at January 16, 2019 08:07 PM (QDnY+)

I wouldn't call it a failure of the Founders. The division of power has been systematically undermined over the last 100+ years, starting with the 17th Amendment. Today the left is calling for the elimination of the Electoral College, which would usher in pure democracy.

413 CM, agreed, you shouldn't post his email in case you want to pursue legal action. You DEFINITELY shouldn't give the email to someone else here so they can post it. That would be just awful.

I'll also up my pledge to 5 bucks a post. So pustule, if you want to keep posting, maybe CM can drive a Bentley next time he takes an Uber job.

Yes. It makes the tut tut finger pointing 'conservative' fucking stupid. And a circular firing squad trigger-puller fragging his squadmates.

416 Forget minions, here is real intersting stuff:

"US submarine commander sacked after hiring TEN hookers for hotel orgy.....A US Navy submarine commander has been fired after he hired ten prostitutes to party in his hotel room."

Posted by: runner

Did any you ex-swabbies read about the Navy Times report on the Fitz? Man, what a disaster. I can't even imagining any of that happening when I served. They would have had to falsified Oprep, sitreps, and casrep reports out the wazoo to get away with that kind of readiness degradation.

No way should they put a non-SWO qualified OOD on the bridge during outbound transit in Yokosuka...

418 Gipper Lives, outstanding.

Steve and Cold Bear, this collapse of the internal balancing dynamic has been striking for years. Having been on the Hill for years, and I think I commented along these lines here before, the sort of behavior one was seeing from the Obama admin. towards Congress was unimaginable. Because Congress was taking it, and not responding.

And of course it was nearly as bad even with GOP "control", so far, under Trump. Which is one reason (among many) that experienced observers have long presumed the scandal, dirt, and crimes within the intel community and FBI/DOJ are spectacular.

It really is Trump and a handful of GOP incumbents vs. "the system".

That's the reality we live in though. The dems stick together, the RINOS wet their pants and stab each other in the back at the first sign of trouble.

420 rickl I didn't say the founders failed, I said the system has finally collapsed (more/less), which is obviously the fault of the living who were in positions of responsibility today/recently. The design was amazing, best ever. It just appears that it has, largely, finally, stopped working.

421 The depressing thing is realizing no one is going to be held account for any of this and knowing what awaits Trump once he no longer has the protection of the Presidency.

Thanks Fen. Yes, I have heard of him. I believe he even has his own show on the weekends. I also think that was the type of surgery that Pres. Carter had for his brain cancer.

They are not talking surgery for him yet, as far as I know, but I will mention this to him as well.

Thanks for putting him on the prayer list.

424 thanks rhomboid.

Barr was supportive of Mueller and Rosebnstein generally. But he committed to look into the FISA fraud and took a dim view of wiretapping presidential campaigns. He can only say so much without stirring the hornets.

425 At this point I'm not expecting to live long enough to see a single coup conspirator go to prison. But David French unemployed and begging to be the new cabin boy on Kristol's new dingy cruises would be something. Make it so.
