The Morning Rant: J.V. Edition

Green New Deal? Damned straight! Sign this monkey up!

Phase 1. A comprehensive design effort (on the order of The Manhattan Project) to create easily manufactured modern nuclear power plants that can be built quickly and with existing manufacturing infrastructure.

Phase 2. Build 200 of them.

Phase 3. Decrease domestic fossil fuel use dramatically.

Phase 4. Become the only world fossil fuel superpower, simultaneously shrinking the ability of Russia to finance its expansionist policies, destroying the funding for many terrorist groups, and realigning geopolitics away from the Middle East and other oil producing nations.

This is what they mean....right?

Growing number of 2020 Democrats supporting 'Green New Deal'

Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., 37, who says he is looking at a 2020 presidential run, told Fox News he was “excited” to support the proposal and be a part of the process.

“When it comes to climate change, we need to advance policies that don’t ask Americans to choose between their jobs and clean air and water,” Swalwell told Fox News this week. “We can do that by greening the grid with investments in renewable energy and a wage and skills guarantee for any displaced worker.”

Because going nuclear would clean up this country in a big way. We could get rid of those horrid bird-killing machines (wind turbines) and free up all of that wasted land currently being used for solar. Maybe we could also begin to retire some hydro-electric systems and return those canyons and valleys to their former beauty (Hetch Hetchy comes to mind).

Folks, this woman could teach a Master-Class on how to neuter leftists.

China is the geopolitical problem. Not Russia, which is on a demographic slide that won't end well.
China Will Fail
China has built its rise on its heralded “managed economy.” Even the American left has become enamored of its decades-long success. Not a single mainstream U.S. media outlet has backed President Trump’s aggressive tariffs against the Chinese, even though Beijing have been ripping us off for years.

For all the criticism, however, Mr. Trump is correct, and the weakness of China’s system leaves it uniquely vulnerable to the U.S. pressure campaign.

China’s economy is starting to fail. While this won’t be surprising to anyone who has studied history and free markets, it is coming as a shock to the legions of Wall Street analysts and establishment media talking heads who have drunk the Kool-Aid of Chinese exceptionalism.

The Chinese aren’t exceptional — except maybe at cheating.

I would like to believe this, but it seems a bit...rosy...for my taste.

Well, this seems like a good idea!

27 China are world-class cheaters. But cheating can work for a while. China worries me, but I don't think they're unstoppably ascendant. They are vulnerable to trade pressure - especially if we start enforcing IP law against them through trade policy. They steal everything that isn't nailed down and a lot of stuff that is.

Their one child policy didn't do them any favors, and has set up a very interesting next 20-40 years for them. Regional war isn't out of the question (go take stuff from someone else, use up the surplus men) - though there will be internal opposition to that as people don't want their only kid (on whom they depend for old-age care) to go die in some stupid war.

41 Any energy source that has to be subsidized and/or doesn't stack to fossil fuels in output density can GTFO. That leaves fission and fusion. Thanks for playing, greentards.

An average 1.5-MW turbine (26.9% capacity factor) would produce the same amount of electric energy as that used by almost 332 households over a year. It must be remembered, though, that wind power is intermittent and variable, so a wind turbine produces power at or above its annual average rate only 40% of the time. A wind farm would need 235 square miles to produce the same amount of electricity as a 1,000-megawatt nuclear power plant.

79 No, cost and the normal considerations are the only ones to use. "Fossil fuels" are by far the best fuels, from all angles (sorry, science will be used here, so "environmental" BS is excluded).

Far far better to use the cost-superior energy-dense fuels. Duh. Any, *any* departure from that, just as with any other resource or economic activity, implies waste/opportunity cost/reduced economic return.

New-design, closed-circuit nukes might have niche applications. Such as "co-generation" sorts of concepts, like plants on the CA coast, to produce inexpensive power, and desalinate ocean water.

It is stunning to review the degree to which ignorance, laziness/submissiveness, romanticism, and authoritarian impulses limit and impoverish America today. Our energy situation should be, and easily could be, 75% better, in short order, with no important downside.

But the country is too dumbed down - to include many "conservatives" - to break out of its sad state.

89 I have been of the opinion for a long while that Russia, and Putin, are significantly more concerned about China than they are the US.

Russia has a huge land border with China, and they don't have a lot of people out there. China has a lot of people. And a lot more of those people are male than female. Russia has a lot more females than males, and are overall a declining population.

Think about when Russia invaded Georgia - what else was going on then? Olympics in Beijing.

Putin is not worried that the West will invade or destroy Russia.

We should have used Puerto Rico after the '17 hurricanes as a test lab for grid updates and hardening. We lose at least 30% of our current in transmission. Just think about what eliminating half of that loss does to both supply and costs. The lack of a hard grid is going to bite us in the ass with a large enough solar flare or an EMP attack.

Word.

As an example, Cisco has always had horrible problems with Chinese factories building counterfeit Cisco equipment. That includes their own Chinese factories. About 15-20 years ago, at least one of them was caught running extra shifts to build more gear than they reported to Cisco. All so they could sell on the black market.

It's depressingly common for telcos to buy Cisco enterprise gear from legit distributors and get stuck when they try to install the software from Cisco, because the serial numbers for the hardware have already been swiped and used for counterfeit gear.

Same thing goes on for virtually all of the telco/data gear manufacturers.

It does not make economic sense, because the plant costs of the production capacity you need for when the wind does NOT blow (or blows too hard) still has to be there.

169 wind generators are ugly bird choppers ... in Europe now, they require old ones be properly dismantled. A bunch of them on a (otherwise) beautiful site is just ugly. They kill birds and bats ... generally perform half as well as advertised.

Solar is a better option, especially for ranches out west. I may do about 10k of solar this year to capture the tax incentive, but the local coop makes their profit mostly by selling electricity, so are less than thrilled at the prospect of selling less, and put up some obstacles for the grid-tie system (like $2M liability insurance requirement, cutting the heat pump lower rate).

The coal generating power plant was shuttered here ... it was clean enough but "global warming" and the war on coal. And most canyons are more awesome as boat heaven reservoirs and power producing dams, imo. Slowing and storing water is generally very useful and enviro-friendly.

But overall, the left wants to cripple US till we submit to their globalist dominance, where we can be made slaves again, like the "good old days", and they won't have to go to China to run their slave labor camps. They don't care about clean energy ... it is just part of their fake "Green Party" propaganda. It is in fact, just the revised name for the communist party.

Posted by: Anna Puma (HQCaR) at January 10, 2019 11:45 AM (O636P)

257 US nukes are pretty irrelevant to Russia's exports. US power uses virtually no liquid fuels (which is truly internationally priced), and the fossil we use for power is nat gas and coal. Coal mining dramatically dropped off as coal plants shut with nat gas price declines, they did not (by and large) go into increased exports. US domestic nat gas prices are effectively irrelevant to international (LNG, Russian exports to Europe) nat gas pricing. We have a tiny bit of liquification and gasification capability, but it is small enough to be completely irrelevant.

Note: This does not mean small modular nukes are a bad idea. It just means this isn't a reason for them.

Not that when people talk about small modular nukes, they're generally talking about 'nukes aboard subs' scale, which is sub 100MW or smaller. If you build 200 of them....you might, just barely, offset some of the recent and coming nuclear retirements (often 1000 (one unit) to 4000 (4 unit) scale plants. You would have to build thousands of them, which is the point of modularization. 200 is noise in a system as large as the US power grid.

Not a dig at you personally, but I just can't see any point in doing any research into bombarding us with radiation. It's just not safe. We already have very efficient ways to generate energy, what we really need is to start getting rid of imbecile politicians who refuse to allow us to develop them for a growing world.

Okay - I won't be sarcastic. The last presentation by DTE Electric I was at on nuclear plants I was told the company had applied for a license to build "just in case". Further, work was progressing on selecting designs for future commercial reactors and that Westinghouse had two, Mitsubishi had one and a French company another. The idea was, in the event of construction, to use the same designs to speed construction and reduce the costs of running and training personnel. The current US nuclear fleet mostly consists of one-off designs making the training of personnel much more costly than otherwise.

The idea that we no longer have the know-how to build a nuclear plant is bonkers when you consider we built the first one with no know-how at all. I know the Horde tends towards the depressive in life, but really!

Don't repeat the mistake of the Gingrich Rebels "Pickett's Charge" of 1995.

Again, Trump should stay on focus. The blame for the plight of the federal workers is solely on Smarmy and Peelousy. That point must be hammered home.

Your delight at certain bureaucrats suffering is, as the character Hannibal Lecter put it, "In-cidental".

295 China will fail.

1. It created a huge manpower pool by aborting almost all female babies for 40 years, leading to 119 males for every 100 females. Moat of that manpower pool is already too old to be turned into an Empire-creating army. If it doesn't try to take over the world within about 10 years, it will not have the manpower to do so, ever.

2. It's propped up its economy for 20 years by building enormous empty cities that, because it killed so many of its female babies, will never have families living in them.

China is a house of cards, albeit a dangerous one. I can see its leadership deciding to go for it before it's too late. Watch out Taiwan, and perhaps even Russia.

Federal Government unions don't have automatic union dues deductions. It's an opt-in system and most employees in a bargaining unit chose not to "donate". The unions constantly bitch about it.

+++++++++++
And how much interaction with foreigners or out-of-towners has been curtailed? I imagine the cab business has little to do with the locals (they probably drive or commute on public transit like everyone else does everywhere else), so the government equivalent of "business travel" is probably much more important. How much of that is still going on? I honestly don't know.

Besides, I thought Uber and the Millenials were killing cab drivers.

300 "Maybe we could also begin to retire some hydro-electric systems and return those canyons and valleys to their former beauty (Hetch Hetchy comes to mind)."

They provide a lot more than electricity. Dams are also flood control and reservoirs for irrigation and drinking water. Hetch Hetchy particularly is a massive source of clean drinking water.

Not to mention you dont just blow up a dam, unless you want to destroy a massive amount of area downstream. Draining and removing a dam could easily cost into the billions.

And on top of all that, The federal government already owns a huge percentage of CA and every other western state. The last thing CA needs is more "preserved" land.

305 The left opposes nuclear power, because it will result in multiple Chernobyls and Fukushimas, and because there is nowhere to safely put the nuclear waste material - see the fight over Yucca Flats in Nevada.

Plus, Macron in France is closing nuclear plants.

Thus, the left says nuclear power is dirty power.

307 Item #1: It's in the works. The US Army wants micro-reactors - less than 25 MWe. They need portable power to run all their electronics. They have six companies interested in making this happen, including Westinghouse, who is designing a reactor with Los Alamos that fits on a truck. The DOE just got Centrus to reconfigure centrifuges to make High Assay Low Enriched Uranium (HALEU) up to 19.75% U-235. It's really happening. Thank you, DoD.

The article I read about the land-locked stripers brought tears to my eyes. Big stripers, some rivaling the size of the ocean dwellers.

I remember the time there was the annual striper migration out of a new jersey river and my dad and I were fishing with live eels and he hooked a monster. Had to be in the forty plus pound range. Boat rod bent in half.

The line snapped. Only time I ever saw my dad that close to crying.

No. Kill the seals. Save the stripers.

324 What needs research is making reliable smaller units.

Power companies made their nukes too big. Trying decrease the foot print actually increases the danger.

Smaller units are more easily controlled, do less damage if they go critical and they can contain that damage with less expense.

Note we have lots of experience from building Subs.

Using smaller units then linking them will also spread out the potential damage and foot print of the spent fuel rods and other waste.

It's not being done for two main reasons; the Gov isn't subsidizing it and the laws need to be changed as to the green interference with nuclear power.

Resolve those two (the 2nd will be the hardest and take the most time) and they then become viable for power companies to build. They could even be owned by local cities and counties just as they own the waste treatment plants and the clean water. Make the problems local and they then become more easily solvable.

325 Posted by: jakee308 at January 10, 2019 12:27 PM (u+4Rc)

Nuclear power enjoys economies of scale, that's why plants for electricity production are large. The cost per MW goes up for smaller reactors. Plenty of other costs scale up with smaller and more prevalent designs as well. Security costs will drastically increase having a dozen times as many sites to guard. And personnel costs as you will need engineers on site at each reactor.

Smaller plants make sense in naval uses, since it reduces the resupply logistical strain, not so much on land.
