The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

I've observed over the years that researchers tend to explain any gender difference in a way that makes whatever is true of women good. This is an interesting example of that. You can see that they're presenting the independence and courage of men as "risk taking," "deviance," and insensitivity to "morality." I'm intrigued by the presentation of women as pushed by the Democratic elite. Is being a follower regarded as a positive quality (when you follow the Democratic elite)? Ann Althouse

Quote II

"When you're working in an organization where we all have the same belief system … we all fight for the same thing, so when we have a disagreement we forget that it's the same as any other workplace. Yes, I'm part of a movement and a bigger thing, but I'm also an individual with rights, and if I feel they're being violated then I'm going to fight to see them respected." Veteran teacher and union field representative John Kugler

From double secret probation to keep your ass off of our property.

Four cafe workers have been banned from 50 branches of Costa Coffee after a staff bust-up.

They face police action if they set foot inside the shops “for any purpose”.

The four had quit as a show of support for a manager who lost her job in Selsey, West Sussex.

Now, six months on, they have been told they are on a “company banned list”.

Just how did those Christmas trees end up at the local grocery store, gas station or youth group sale? The harvesting of Christmas trees.

The odds are stacked against them. Yet Chick-fil-A continues to grow.

Privately held Chick-fil-A is not just growing fast, it’s becoming a growing threat to a number of large publicly held chains, including the biggest of them all, McDonald’s Corp.

According to Kalinowski Equity Research, Chick-fil-A could move into the number three spot on the list of largest U.S. restaurant concepts in 2018, which was held by Subway, the privately held sandwich chain, in 2017. That would be ahead of the 2020 projection made by others.

I guess I'm showing my age. In our day 'smart toys' were ones that used batteries. They didn't track you.

Parents are realizing that it's not just Santa who's keeping tabs on their kids. Many popular high-tech gadgets that may end up being given as holiday presents can actually track, monitor and record children.

Because of that, there are some gifts Felicity and Alden Eute won't have under their Christmas tree. Their mother, Emily, has banned all tech gifts this season.

"My husband and I both agree kids don't really need to be on technology or on social media," Emily said. "None of these extra gadgets that just expose you to things kids shouldn't be exposed to at their age.

Bill Kristol, Marco Rubio, Nicole Wallace and Brian Kilmeade Quite the warmongering club.

Unless Donald Trump decides to reverse his decision to begin withdrawals from Syria and Afghanistan, cable news for the next few weeks is going to be one long Scanners marathon of exploding heads.

“Today’s decision would cheer Moscow, ISIS, and Iran!” yelped Nicole Wallace, former George W. Bush communications director.

“Maybe Trump will bring Republicans and Democrats together,” said Bill Kristol, on MSNBC, that “liberal” channel that somehow seems to be populated round the clock by ex-neocons and Pentagon dropouts.

Kristol, who has rarely ever been in the ballpark of right about anything — he once told us Iraq was going to be a “two month war” — might actually be correct.

Trump’s decisions on Syria and Afghanistan will lay bare the real distinctions in American politics. Political power in this country is not divided between right and left, and not even between rich and poor.

The real line is between a war party, and everyone else.

Risk vs. Reward. Genius Award Winner!

24-year-old Varcy Locklear was known to police in the US for jumping on trains without a ticket and has been charged numerous times with trespassing.

Authorities believe his dangerous habits led him to be decapitated as he journeyed on the top of an Amtrack train in Lumberton, North Carolina on October 30.

Locklear’s headless body was found shortly after his death, while his skull was discovered on December 11 and formerly identified on Thursday (December 20).

Elderly and dying. Yet the Christmas spirit remains strong. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

Ken Watson may have passed away in October, but a simple act of kindness that he performed before he died has already resulted in a lasting legacy.

Ken Watson was the 86-year-old neighbor of the Williams family. Owen Williams and his wife first moved into their home in Barry, Wales three years ago, and Owen says that he first caught a glimpse of Watson while the octogenarian was nudging a 20-foot ladder across the front of his house, all while he was balanced at the top.

17 I saw "Mary, Queen of Scots" today. Good performances by Soirse Ronan and Margot Robbie as Mary and Elizabeth, but it was made weird by color-blind casting in a historical drama, so you have black, Asian, and Polynesian courtiers in an Elizabethan period piece. That works on the stage, but movies are so literal and I found it jarring.

75 I don't eat much fast food anymore, because it doesn't taste very good anymore. No, my taste buds haven't changed. They've changed the recipes or ingredients. For example, Mickey D's french fries. Epic blunder on their part. I used to love their Quarter Pounders, but they just don't taste the same. They are dry and flavorless.

Convenience is or the "fast" part of fast food is one reason to like the chain restaurants. Except I've found for whatever reason, it sometimes takes quite a while. And now, it's kind of expensive, too. Then, there's the surly attitude of the employees.

Chick-Fil-A reminds me very much of the way the big chains used to operate. It takes dedication to make a restaurant work, it ain't easy. I downloaded their App, and decided to try them a while back. They were busy, but the line went fast.

Now, a crispy chicken sandwich - it sort of stands to reason that it should be crispy. This is easier said than done. And obviously Chick-Fil-A knew this. Great sandwich. The Lemonade tasted like maybe it had seen lemons at some point, instead of like a chemistry set. The waffle fries were pretty good. Not "awesome" in the way a good diner would make them, but they were high quality. I remember thinking at the time these guys are going to give McD's a run for their money, so it doesn't surprise me to read things like that.

For whatever reason firms over time lose their focus, their "core competencies" and that's the way it goes. I suppose it's a matter of leadership.

125 you know I really do not think that surprise anal, as twistedly funny as it is, is a thing.

sure when you have a planet of 7 or 8 billion people there is going to be accidental anal every so often, however, no surprise anal.

surprise anal is really better described as undiscussed anal. similar to flying a 747 into an airport unannounced.

you may be flying that heavy in and you may be ignoring all the calls from the tower asking what the hell you think you are doing, but the guys in the tower have the wherewithal to know exactly what is going on.

you are on approach, on the glide slope, and you are going to drive the big sum bitch onto the runway and all the way to the gate then unload.

130 Watched the Christmas tree video. I don't know why they think they need helicopters to haul the trees out to the loading site. Also using chainsaws as they are is back-breaking work: fire up the saw, bend over, hold the bar close to and parallel to the ground, cut a tree, stand up, walk to the next tree, repeat (the alternative being to walk to the next tree while stooped down), ad infinitum.

Real logging companies don't use chainsaw much for felling anymore. They have track-mounted machines called feller-bunchers, and their throughput is much, much faster than a guy with a chainsaw.

Rig a similar cutter on the front of a quad, or a small skidsteer. Set it up to cut a tree, and then throw it right over the cab of the unit, onto a slide that runs down into a trailer. When the trailer becomes full, another quad comes along and exchanges it for an empty trailer.

A Jet Ranger chopper like that costs over a thousand dollars an hour to operate. And the terrain on the farm in the video is nearly flat, no impediment at all to a quad or light tracked vehicle.

Thomas Malthus' An Essay on the Principle of Population. It is essentially the argument of The Wealth of Nations in a much shorter essay.

Chapter 5 talks about how poor relief hurts the poor
Chapter 10 talks about market forces and the failure of subsidies to bring any relief to the poor because it increases demand without increasing supplies.
Chapter 16 discusses enclosure, and criticizes Adam Smith's point of the cause of the wealth of nations

Dr T, some random suggestions.

For Marx, instead of the Manifesto or excerpts from dreary (and delusional) "economic" tracts, maybe some social/political analysis, which was much better, not entirely wrong, and often readable. The 18th Brumaire of Louis Napoleon, or The Civil War in France.

And there's of course so much on WWII to consider. Maybe just one of Churchill's memoir volumes, Gathering Storm maybe? And one out of nowhere, but a very well done book on the ground-level average citizen's view of the war from the German side, The German War by Nicholas Stargardt.

Fourier is always good for a laugh, at least as long as he and his adherents don't control your life.

251 Nice holiday season experience today. Went to a local coffee roaster place - the boss loves one of their roasts, I like it too, was sold out at the coffee place we often go to. Turns out (logically enough) they didn't have any, as their focus is on their holiday blend at this time.

So I mention to the nice young guy behind the counter that their website actually didn't have any info, including whether it even existed, about their shop - just general/background info and a store to buy beans and swag. Found their physical address through Yelp. He was as astounded as I had been. And we did minor geek-out on coffee bean types and how they choose their beans.

When we went to leave, he said hold on a second - he went back and found the last of the blend we were looking for. And gives it to us, gratis.

289 A Jet Ranger chopper like that costs over a thousand
dollars an hour to operate. And the terrain on the farm in the video is
nearly flat, no impediment at all to a quad or light tracked vehicle.
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at December 23, 2018 10:29 PM (fDU8w)

Once the trees are piled and slung, the chopper gets them out of the fields faster than trucks, with less mud, which has to be cleaned off to make the trees marketable. Usually a crew goes through to cut and stack them and putting on the slings, and the chopper comes in to sling them out so the time spent with the helicopter is fairly short.

Remember also, the Willamette valley is not that lovely rolling loess plain you have in Alberta, it is hillsides of sticky, greasy grey clay, prone to compaction, rutting, and sinking trucks to the axle or sliding them down into draws.
And then the rains turn your rutted hillside into gulleys you can't plant on.

Trees are grown where grass seed won't grow profitably, the soil tends to be poor, and tends to either be over heavy clay or shale, or both.
Some growers do pull their trees out by truck, but those tend to be the smaller growers that couldn't take advantage of the relative savings from the speed the helicopters offer.

Also the erosion and compaction are serious concerns to the growers since they affect how the next harvest grows.

These are pretty savvy farmers and they have balanced the cost of the helicopters versus trucks and they find they make more profit out of slinging the trees out of the fields.

However, if the chief executive wants to REMOVE troops from some shithole, well that's just not gonna fly. Congress needs to act. WTF? LOL

He just makes these goofs in and out of the government look more insane by the hour. Has anybody articulated a compelling argument about why "we" are deployed in these places? That's a figure I haven't seen before. How was that derived?

Because Herod ordered all the babies two and under murdered, I suppose.

Not being a Biblical literalist, I freely interpolate that perhaps the wise guys didn't go back to Herod because an angel warned them - maybe for certain values of "angel," I suppose - I figure they sized Herod up for the sleezeball he was on first meeting, and took his gold with no intention to return.

They weren't called the three foolish guys after all.

Thanks for your insight. The terrain at the Noble Mountain Tree farm, as depicted in the video, seems to be pretty gentle. And Alberta is mud central in wet seasons.

And I wasn't thinking about bringing trucks, big or small, right into the tree plantings. Mount your cutters on tracked skidsteers, or on 4X4 quads, either one pulling a basket trailer on flotation tires to receive the cut trees.

Cutting trees low to the ground like that is hard, hard work. I have done it; cutting geophysical lines through second-growth or old planted areas. You have to cut them low, and square, so the resulting stumps don't make deadly pitfalls for the crew stringing out the wires. That means working bent over.

Psychology and ethology (the way SJWs use it) are bullshit subjects. Anything these people do is not "research", it's just navel gazing. We don't even know how cells work FFS. We need to distinguish real science from navel gazing bullshit like psychology.

392 AOP, I've been on some of Noble Mountain's land, and some of them are pretty steep.

I bet some equipment could be built to act as a faller for the trees, but a guy with a short chainsaw is pretty flexible to all terrain.

Most of the crews are Mexican or central Americans. Noble Mountain (when I was in around that business) hired their own seasonal crews, but a lot of the smaller growers used Farm/Forest Labor contractors and the contractors worked Christmas trees between row crops in the summer and fall, and planting trees starting in February.
I suspect the Christmas tree growers will mechanize when labor costs start making hiring crews too expensive, like it did for hops and is doing for blueberries.

Also, there is a real concern about compaction and rutting leading to erosion around here. The growers are more akin to forestry than row crops, so they get the whole "compaction is bad" and wind up keeping an eye on erosion like the foresters do.

410 But here's my question: If a child is unable to give sexual consent to have sex with an adult because they are too immature, how are they deemed able to make decisions over their sexual orientation to receive gender reassignment?

Same way that teens can't consent to sex (in many places or under many circumstances), but are competent to get an abortion. Or that paying others to have sex is illegal, unless you invite a film crew along. As near as I can tell, a lot about sex and the law doesn't make any sense. It's like a bad conversion of a garage into an extra bedroom: ramshackle.

416 bet some equipment could be built to act as a faller for the trees, but a guy with a short chainsaw is pretty flexible to all terrain.

There are some horse loggers I have seen working, and that is an interesting thing to watch.

A couple years ago I was watching helicopter logging at one of the migratory bird sanctuaries, Baskett Slough, as they were pulling trees out with a privately owned Chinook. I think that one really was because of concerns of erosion and compaction, and it was Federal land so it was federal money paying for it.

Bohemia logging, before they went under, was experimenting with using aerostats (tethered blimps) for bring trees out of the steep slopes instead of using normal skidding. The first attempt had the loggers roll out the gas envelope like a carpet, prior to inflating it. They realized when they tried to inflate it that they should have had the loggers take off their cork boots before walking on it.

My balsamic vinegar needs are not immense, but seem to be easily met by stuff from Trader Joe's, and it's not that expensive. From Modena, I think, real thing, not a substitute.

While the duck usually avoids the rice, when eaten it creates a scientific term, commonly knows as "DuckStomach".

After consumption of said grain, the male of the species often walks in circles and repeats the phrase, "Fuck You" for hours.

While disconcerting and inappropriate for children, it does no harm to the duck.

487 I think it's white vinegar with flavorings. You know how real brewed soy sauce is different from take-out packets? Same kind of thing. I don't think there's any law that says they can't just call it "balsamic vinegar" though.

Posted by: hogmartin at December 24, 2018 12:38 AM

.....

Yes. Usually brown sugar and caramel coloring.

Even the majority of the "expensive" ones in a grocery store are made with vinegar, grape juice and enzymes added.

And steer clear of the AoS Barrel-aged balsamics, they aren't what you think they are.

488 Calm Mentor, here too - don't use a lot of it when I use it. There are a few recipes that use it. Killer roasted chicken wing recipe with balsamic, soy, chile paste comes to mind (hmm, shouldn't be hungry now, but .....).

IMO only, follow through and make her pay, and let her know exactly why. If she has any money that grandparents have given her, or Aunt's, Uncles, whatever, tell her you will use that money of hers to buy a new one.

Bottom line is that if you let her know she can do stuff like that and not be really be punished, you are setting an exponentially bad path going forward.

521 Rinse out that flooded keyboard with 90% Isopropyl Alkeehaul.

Displaces the water, absorbs the scant remnant left behind, and evaporates quickly.

Will it solve your problem? Likely not, given the fact that you've already tried evaporative drying and have "powered up" the thing several times.

But it can't hurt to try.

Jim
Sunk New Dawn

p.s. try re-flooding with pure 100% distilled water, then do the Isopropyl thing again.

It's not the WATER in water that destroys your electronics. It's the solids suspended IN the water, that remain after drying, which promote corrosion, or cause short circuits by coating things with a conductive film after the "water" is dried.

Still....slim odds, after those power-ups. But, whatcha got to lose?

555 @451 Need some IT help. Pookette took a flying leap into Pooky's chair (which I've told her not to do) and spilled water all over his G19 Logitech keyboard. I did what I could to mop up the mess, but now the keyboard has power and can see computer details but the computer won't register keystrokes. The computer won't recognize the device when it's plugged into the USB port. I've re-downloaded and installed the Logitech software but the computer says that the drivers are up-to-date and sees no problems it can troubleshoot. We cannot afford another G19 and Pooky is....... irritated at Pookette, obviously. Any help?
-----------------

If you're still around...

Water is always "fun". Your best solution in a case like this probably involves *carefully* removing the screws in the keyboard, and opening it up. Figure out where the water went, carefully - and gently - clean up what you can with a towel, and then leave the whole thing to air dry for a few hours. Once it's finished drying, then go ahead and put the keyboard back together.

Of course, that's what I'd do with a regular run of the mill inexpensive keyboard. Since the G19 is a more complicated example, there might be complications to what I've described.

570 Board games had a fairly big resurgence in the last 5 - 15 years. Lots of newly developed stuff as well as foreign games that had flown under the radar. Settlers of Catan in particular had a massive resurgence that was a gateway for a lot of people.

I think the market has cooled down a bit since then after getting oversaturated, but I don't know if the numbers actually support that. Just a feeling after seeing local game stores close.

578 Okay, so I just got here, but that story about the elderly neighbor that passed away? Could pretty much be the same guy who lived behind us in Waunakee.

A year after we moved in, Albert's wife passed away, so we went to the funeral, since it is in our neighborhood. We knew him as a neighbor, not much more than saying hi and bitching about the rabbits in the garden.

Once our son came home, however, he became surrogate Grandpa extraordinaire. He cheered him hitting a wiffle ball in the yard, he took him for rides on his lawnmower, he gave him tips about getting rid of the training wheels. My son would climb in his lap and watch Brewers games all the way through, which is some feat for a 4 year old.

Anyway, Albert passed away last year, and I have never seen my son cry like that. Now the repose of Albert's soul is the main topic of every rosary and my son lights candles for him as well, although I suspect that by now, my son's prayers have sprung the old guy from purgatory and he is in the bosom of Abraham.

ALWAYS say hi to your neighbors, even the ones who are grouchy at first. Take 'em a pie once in a while, will ya?

Need some IT help. Pookette took a flying leap into Pooky's chair (which
I've told her not to do) and spilled water all over his G19 Logitech
keyboard. I did what I could to mop up the mess, but now the keyboard
has power and can see computer details but the computer won't register
keystrokes. The computer won't recognize the device when it's plugged
into the USB port. I've re-downloaded and installed the Logitech
software but the computer says that the drivers are up-to-date and sees
no problems it can troubleshoot. We cannot afford another G19 and Pooky
is....... irritated at Pookette, obviously. Any help?

Posted by: pookysgirl at December 24, 2018 12:26 AM (XKZwp)

That keyboard is probably trash now. After wiping the internals down as described in a post above you may try storing it in a plastic bag for a week with rice to absorb humidity.

However, personally I don't understand why anyone would need a keyboard that is expensive as those Logitech G series. You can get a generic Amazon keyboard for as low as $12 and it will do everything that a keyboard needs to do.

And with one of those you don't have to be near as concerned with liquid accidents. If you have a spill and the keyboard quits working you throw it in the trash and get another.

I think you're right. If they had a dehumidifier they could get it in front of it would probably hasten the process. My microwave has a 100 degree 'bake' feature which would be fairly safe. An oven would be really chancy, unless it was really monitored. A fan in front of it.

625 A Saudi Arabian student in Oregon was arrested last year for manslaughter, after he ran over and killed a teenage girl after illegally swerving around traffic that had stopped for her, and while driving on a suspended license.

The government of Saudi Arabia gave the kid $100,000 to pay his $1 million bail (they had him pay it directly, so that S.A. wouldn't be on the hook for the balance when he skipped), and then they gave him a phony passport and flew him out of the U.S. on a private jet.

https://preview.tinyurl.com/y9hsna64

Kid's parents don't appear to be anybody important (mom's a kindergarten teacher, dad sells trailers), but apparently they have some pull with somebody in the Saudi government. Whatever the reason, the U.S. government should be raising holy hell over this deliberate obstruction of justice.

Sort of enjoying crackling yule log now. Lame, someone just haphazardly tossed in a log, started the gas, and then quickly made a short video.

At least they could have artfully placed a few different sizes of logs in there and get it to the point where it could burn on its own without the gas.

Even the bing engineers/marketing people are just mailing it in with no thought or concern for quality.

669 Well, I work for a gov contractor - typically the staff here works on the days outside of Christmas and New Years as a way to catch up on project requirements. The shutdown resulted in a fair number of stop work orders on the non-DoD work, so it is very quiet right now. Lovely.

670 My youngest was born in December and for several years he would end up crying at everyone else's birthday celebration because it just wasn't fair that his birthday was always last. Try explaining how this works to a blubbering 5 or 6 year old. LOL

I'll admit to giving Christmas/birthday combo gifts. Heck, I'm doing it this year to someone whose birthday was in July. 739 Salty Dawg, want to expand your knowledge more. The WWII talk last night made me go pull out another volume of the Time-Life World War II set I was given to read. It was titled War in the Outposts.

One of the more fascinating sections was about the operations of the Australian Army 2/2nd Independent Company, part of Sparrow Force, sent to deny the Japanese the island of Timor. From the Japanese invasion at the end of February until evacuated in December, this unit and the 2/4th Independent Company which arrived later caused the Japanese to commit almost 15,000 men to their defeat. But before that could happen an Australian destroyer and the US submarine Gudgeon evacuated them to safety.
