Quote of The Day

Luke Chapter 2, King James Version

And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed.

2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)

3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David

5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.

16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.

18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

19 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.

20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

Charles Dickens and the white Christmases of London.

It was 25 December, and little George Adamson ran to the window, hoping to find a white world on the other side. But once he drew the curtains, disappointment set in. It was another year without snow on Christmas Day.

Now, as a geography lecturer at King’s College London, he knows who to blame for his misplaced expectations: Charles Dickens, who populated his stories with snowy depictions of the holiday period.

That people like him imagine a snow-covered Christmas has always intrigued Adamson. In the UK, where he grew up, December is not a particularly snowy month – yet shops sell cards with white Christmas illustrations and restaurants decorate with fake snow. Where are people taking on these expectations if they haven’t lived them?

It's never too late to fall in love, Especially for Santa Claus.

We all know Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus have been married for years, possibly centuries.

But a St. George man finally popped the question to the woman he loves, 40 years after they met at a St. George middle school.

The two 53-year-olds were hired by photographer Alyssa Ence for a family party in St. George.

Shane McDaniel and his 20-year-old twin sons, Henry and Harrison, spent eight months slinging axes to transform their East Lakeshore Drive home into a fortress of firewood.

Instead of selling the wood, which McDaniel values at $10,000, he’s giving it away to people in need. Free, with delivery.

22 Hello, Horde.

CW Jr is at a workplace Christmas party, and I've been alone pretty much all day. I can't say I've enjoyed it; some co-workers decided to be asses (again) and I've been stewing about it since I left work.

It's just me and the boy tomorrow. We're cooking a turkey roast, throwing in some low-carb veggies, and watching a lot of movies. Neither one of us had the money to get a gift for the other, but that's OK.

I'll force myself to look for the positives in the next 36 hours. Or I'll just sleep a lot. I'm trying to keep my options open.

74 I really like this port.

.....

NYC nephew procured me a bottle of 10 year old tawny port on his trip to Portugal 6 months ago and gave it to me for Christmas.

Love that kid. Such a thoughtful young man to think of his uncultured, hillbilly Uncle in Tennessee like that.

I think I'll save it to drink with him before he gets married some day.

75 58 The Dickens story is Exhibit One of the total lack of self-awareness on the part of the Gerbil Wormists. In Dickens' time, the world was just coming out of the Maunder Minimum, a long period of exceedingly cold weather brought on by a quiet Sun.

The climate change, then as now, was entirely natural, and not influenced by Man's activities.

147 One Christmas disaster averted already. The XO and I had finished supper and the dishes were all washed and drying in the dish drainer. I'd just wiped the counter when the Himalayan wandered by. I grabbed a wash cloth, wet it down with warm water, grabbed her eye comb and was just plopping her down on the counter for a thorough face washing when the XO asked when I was planning to make the salad for tomorrow. You know -- the salad that has a chopped up head of lettuce, green peas, Swiss cheese, bacon, a couple other things, and needs to sit over night? The salad I do not need to show up for dinner without? I'd totally spaced it off. The little fuzzy cat escaped with a half-assed face washing so I could make the salad. I would have looked pretty dumb in the morning when we were packing everything up for family dinner -- then remembered the salad. But all is good right now except the fuzzy cat won't come near me in case I have her eye comb in my hands. (Be careful what you wish for; you just might get it. I'd always wanted a Himalayan. A few years back, I inherited one from a friend. I never dreamed one cat would need so much grooming. Never again.)

151 If that eggnog recipe included the regular rye whiskey they still make today at Mount Vernon, oh boy.

The regular stuff, which is pretty much moonshine, is potent. I'll admit I didn't like it. I haven't tasted the better variety (same ingredients but more work put into it). That's $225 for a 375 ml bottle (the regular is $98 for a 375).

60% rye, 35% corn, 5% malted barley.

Back home and then I laid down for a second before going to church service and to grocery shop for my dish tomorrow at family gathering.....

...I woke up 3 hours later to a text from the Pastor telling me how he was sorry he didn't see me at service tonight! Grocery store now closed. Sense of impending dread.

So here is the list of ingredients in what will now be called "I Hope This Shit Works" Christmas dessert:

3 clemintine oranges stolen from daughter's stocking
1 Harry and David pear given to me by a student
1 pack black mission figs I couldn't figure out what to do with
2 small red delicious apples leftover from daughters lunchbox
Juice of one Meyer lemon leftover from school lesson on making Sweet n Sour bar mix
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 pack leftover pecan chips bought to make chocolate chip cookies with

It actually broke down into a nice cobbler like concoction and I made an oatmeal crumble from cinnamon and apple instant oatmeal that my daughter eats.

Leftover cobbler!

Jonathan Jarvis was head of the Parks Service during the Obama years. There is a tradition that the head of the Parks Service resigns when a new President is inaugurated, so Jarvis left, while blasting Trump for "censorship" (Trump had put a moratorium on Park Service external communications as he came into office, because the Park Service's messaging was relentlessly left-wing.)

Not to worry, before Jarvis left, he was named executive director of the UC Berkeley's Institute for Parks, People, and Diversity.

Since "expert economists" were full of shit about what Trump's policies would do, they're jacking the interest rates to bring on a recession, aided by the "misery indexes" trotted out by the MSM..

Then, once Trump goes down in 2020, the Fed has lots of room to drop the rates and bring about "the miraculous recovery brought on by Democrat policies"

It was inevitable that interest rates were going to have to go up after Barky was finally gone. THe Fed spent so much "money" keeping them ridiculously low for Barky that there was never any way they could sustain that. The Fed blew trillions just to try and make Barky look as good as they could.

Trump has done everything he could to get the economy going, again, and he's accomplished as much as was humanly possible in this area but the piper for the Barky years has to be paid, eventually, and that will be a painful and dangerous cost. But this was all well known for all those years that we just shitted away trillions and trillions and trillions to prop Barky up.

His Wikipedia entry indicates that he was Superintendent of the Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve in Idaho.

I was there a decade ago, and the signage was really off-putting - basically, the Parks Service denounced you for visiting the park, since visitors damaged the park, and openly speculated that the day would come when the park would be closed to visitors. The Parks Service also denounced industrial society for creating air pollution that was also damaging the park (the park is in a very rural part of eastern Idaho - unless there is a local pollution source I'm not aware of, it has to have among the cleanest air in the United States).

I don't know if Jarvis was responsible for the signage, but I wouldn't be surprised.

284 239,
"The stock market is tanking because of two things:

The fed fucking with interest rates.

The Democrats nonstop attempt to overthrow an elected President"

There was an economic theory that came out of MIT in the 70s-80s which, for one thing, held that by keeping the stock market up people would have good expectations for the future and then plan and invest in a way that would make that future happen.

This is where policies of the Obama era came from, low interest rates and quantitative easing to prop up the market so people would believe that all was rosy and that perception would become reality. It didn't work.

This is just them doing the flip side thinking, stock market goes down, things must be bad and a great malaise sets in. It won't work either.

Its all in the nature of what your intention is.

I give gifts to those I care about, not expecting any recompense.

Its not a business deal. Its not an obligation.

Its a gift because I want to.

But the other side is, if I DON'T want to give a gift, even if you give me one, I don't feel obligated.

I give gifts to those I care about, not expecting any recompense.

Well, it's an odd thing, but at this stage of life where no one I know actually needs anything, I enjoy giving small gifts to people who don't expect it.

For some years now we have been making a small plate of cookies, and attaching a card with a tenner it for the mailman.

At this time of the year, I keep a few candy canes in the pocket of my jacket. Any time I go through the grocery checkout, or stop by for a big Mac, etc., I give the cashier a candy cane and wish them a Merry Christmas. They don't expect it, and always smile.

I also keep some Kennedy $1 coins in my pocket and leave them for modest tips where appropriate.

It doesn't take much to provide a small and pleasant surprise for people.

Let's not forget another Battle of the Bulge, Christmas 1944 veteran - Mel Brooks.

Was looking for the movie "Midnight Clear" online, guess I must have seen it via Amazon Prime or something a few years ago. I should really get the book(s) on the incident. I think the basic outlines as presented in the movie are true, though it was probably jazzed up a bit.

Thought I read that the son of the woman involved was still alive, and had provided (of course) some pretty solid direct commentary on the events.

Not as long as we're here, with you.

Applies here in Galveston, for sure.

Garrett, I love merino wool socks as well. Smartwool was my introduction to the world of non-cotton socks, and I still love them.

BUT, I have found merino socks I like almost as well at Costco, even available to nonmembers like myself. A pack of six pairs costs the same as one pair of Smartwools. They are not always in stock, but in the past I have found them in two different color family assortments.

404 Merry Christmas, Horde !

Posted by: JT at December 25, 2018 04:31 AM (g+YrV)

405 402 It is.

I would return that call. I'd have to wait a few days to make sure i could be calm, but i'd definitely let my concerns be known.

Those days with my dad, the last 2 months, actually i'm so grateful for.

407 Infidel, i'm so sorry for your loss.

This is the 3rd Christmas, and it's just still so different.

408 Mass was lovely this fine evening. Walked out of church and the icefog had lifted to a lovely clear night, moon bright, 12 degrees or so, and crisp as heck.

He is born, the Prince of Peace. Gaudete!

I came close to not getting there. I pulled up to the stoplight at the edge of our neighborhood, whereupon ChrissyMoose was apparently late for an appointment and blasted across the front of the car and cruised on down the bike trail at top speed. Not sure what she was missing, but damn, that girl can run. I about jumped out of my skin.

She DID cross with the light, but still.

409 *hugs* to you, insanity.

Posted by: Infidel at December 25, 2018 04:39 AM (PF4TZ)

410 Infidel... yeah, return the call.

and drop me *another* e-mail, so i can find your others, get off my sorry ass, and get back to you.

losing things i'm supposed to follow up on is, apparently, my #1 talent these days, and i'm the guy with the 49,999 unread e-mails in his in box, according tot he tab at the bottom of the page.

412 Infidel, I sympathize.

My husband's grandma's last Christmas was in hospice, and I cooked prime rib with all trimmings for about 40 relatives who gathered with her, joking and singing and all those crazy things family does. She died on January 6. I truly believe she held on just for Christmas with everyone there.

It still leaves a bit of a pall, and it's been more than 12 years.

I lit a candle for her at Church this evening. I guess you do what you need to in order to cope. Coming here is not the worst idea in that line.

:::hug:::
