The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

Elites do not see their fellow citizens in exceptional terms of the affinities of a common language, shared history, or sovereign geography. Instead, they envision themselves as Socratic citizens of the world. They are an international siblinghood with common blue-chip educations, wealth, and long service in the administrative state. The anointed alone “see” and “grasp” what is really going on with the world, and therefore what really needs to be done right now, at all costs, regardless of the opposition from what Hillary wrote off as “all that red in the middle.” Victor Davis Hanson

Quote II

It’s a tragedy in that Comey and his former inner circle – the now infamous troika of fired FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, fired FBI agent Peter Strzok and former FBI lawyer Lisa Page – have attempted to cloak themselves in the FBI’s rich tradition of fidelity, bravery, and integrity.

In reality, these four former FBI officials have done more to hinder the daily work of the 35,000 selfless and hardworking men and women of the FBI than anyone in the storied agency’s history. Former FBI Assistant Director Chris C. Swecker

Quote III

It is not inequality that enrages people, but indifference or disdain toward them as human beings. Theodore Dalrymple

What the government needs are more nerds and/or geeks.

No data encryption, no antivirus programs, no multifactor authentication mechanisms, and 28-year-old unpatched vulnerabilities are just some of the cyber-security failings described in a security audit of the US' ballistic missile system released on Friday by the US Department of Defense Inspector General (DOD IG).

The report [PDF] was put together earlier this year, in April, after DOD IG officials inspected five random locations where the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) had placed ballistic missiles part of the Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS) --a DOD program developed to protect US territories by launching ballistic missiles to intercept enemy nuclear rockets.

From the land of plenty to Christmas in monochrome.

December (and of course, Christmas itself) used to be are a cathartic time for Venezuelans, a time where you could finally wind down after a long year. Rejoice, celebrate, eat, drink, sing, love, give some caress to your household, and prepare yourself for the upcoming year. That doesn’t seem to be the case anymore—it’s not gonna be the case for a long time, I’m afraid.

While our Worker President, Driver of Victories, and Son of Chavez (again, I’m not making any of these titles up) has officially decreed the start of our Christmas festivities on November 23th (the day of his birthday) the spirit of this most sacred holiday is absent.

The Feds tell California. NO.

California telecom regulators have abandoned a plan to impose government fees on text-messaging services, saying that a recent Federal Communications Commission vote has limited its authority over text messaging.

The FCC last week voted to classify text-messaging as an information service, rather than a telecommunications service.

"Information service" is the same classification the FCC gave to broadband when it repealed net neutrality rules and claimed that states aren't allowed to impose their own net neutrality laws. California's legislature passed a net neutrality law anyway and is defending it in court. But the state's utility regulator chose not to challenge the FCC on regulation of text messaging.

Need a snack? Maybe it is because of a lack of sleep.

Having even one night without sleep leads people to view junk food more favourably, research suggests.

Scientists attribute the effect to the way food rewards are processed by the brain. Previous studies have found that a lack of shuteye is linked to expanding waistlines, with some suggesting disrupted sleep might affect hormone levels, resulting in changes in how hungry or full people feel.

But the latest study suggests that with hormones may have little to do with the phenomenon, and that the cause could be changes in the activity within and between regions of the brain involved in reward and regulation. .

“Our data brings us a little closer to understanding the mechanism behind how sleep deprivation changes food valuation,” said Prof Jan Peters, a co-author of the research from the University of Cologne.

Just what the hell is going on out there in California? Are they spraying shit on the crops?

The California farm at least partially responsible for the most recent romaine e.coli scare is now recalling its cauliflower, as well as its red- and green-leaf lettuce, USA Today reports. The Adam Bros. Farms of Santa Maria, CA, were identified publicly for the first time by the FDA last Thursday.

In a statement, the farm explained while none of the aforementioned produce has tested positive for e.coli yet, they were issuing the recall "out of an abundance of caution," as there is a possibility it's been contaminated with e.coli. They elaborate they "discovered that sediment from a reservoir near where the produce was grown tested positive for E. coli. Filtered and treated water from the reservoir may have come in contact with the produce after it was harvested.”

Santa Claus needs to be replaced according to the politically correct.

America is completely confused these days: a survey from a graphic design company came out with 10% of the people surveyed wanting Santa Claus to be a woman, and 17% wanting HIM to be gender neutral. Or…wanting him to ditch the fancy red suit for skinny jeans and an iPhone. Oh, and tattoos. And Amazon Prime instead of reindeer.

Probably it’s because kids have never seen a reindeer, nor have they ever seen a sleigh or even know what it’s like to ride in one. They have their heads firmly ensconced in the iPhone.

Adrenaline can lead to a Posthumous Genius Award Winner.

A teenage boy died after he jumped off a tower block while wearing a homemade parachute which failed.

Schoolboy Bogdan Firsov even had his mother by his side supporting him as he stood at the top of the high rise building in Ukraine for his daredevil stunt.

But the 15-year-old's parachute failed to open properly and the boy plummeted to the ground and suffered fatal injuries.

I asked Director Comey about who paid for the dossier. His response:

1) Republicans paid for it -- (Republicans did not pay for it)
2) "Who cares?"

Yes, this is an FBI Director apparently not caring to know who paid for information used to surveil Americans with a FISA warrant.

Bull. 35,000 FBI were the figurative hostages of FOUR bad apples?

That may fly with the civilian sector, but military folks know better - if you see someone doing something bad and you dont stop them, you are just as bad as they are. That's what the culture demands.

It's not the 10% bad apples that are the problem, it's the 90% that look the other way.

Getting really tired of the "everyone else af FBI is a boy scout". Bullshit. If they were then FBI wouldn't be ripe with systemic corruption.

65 The reason California abandoned the taxing of text messages is that even their crazy constituents would balk at it. It would hit everyone, and somehow that is disparate impact.

The odd part is, it would be a tax that would actually be fair- it would affect everyone and you would only be taxed as much as you used the service.

Still insane- especially considering how many revenue streams California has and yet finds wanting.

75 The reason California abandoned the taxing of text
messages is that even their crazy constituents would balk at it. It

The odd part is, it would be a tax that would actually be fair- it

the service.

I kind of like the 'inward vs outward' culture idea. The inward might be more stable, but they often fall into dissolution and stagnation.

Outward has it's own problems, but it has a tendency to focus the people on what is important.

I am not sure there is a good example of an outward facing country these days. With social programs and bureaucracy, everything seems to be more and more inward facing. Aside from Islam.

Let's not pretend it's unique to them. It's been the stratagem of lots of people. We were supposed to have slightly broken free of it - but the left realized that it's much easier to manipulate people when they cleave to primitive tribal distinctions. Hence their drive to set back race relations in this country a century or two.

The FBI has a lot more corruption, incompetence, and shitting on the Constitution than just these 4 clowns. The Crime Lab scandals should alone have mandated a housecleaning. This goes back a long time, but they've had great PR covering a lot of asses.

Small l libertarian for sure, but within conservatism. Rand Paul would be to my left I guess. The Western version of conservatism would be the best fit for me. This country needs less government, not more, and modern D's and to a much lesser extent R's are on the wrong side of the issue. Too much reliance on government.

114 The TV depiction of the FBI is exposed as a laughable myth now.

Which is why those programs are unwatchable.

There once was a program call Numb3rs where the typical Hollywood FBI is made up of highly attractive, young, brilliant, single, hyper-dedicated, honest warriors for justice who would never sleep, never take time off, and would work for days straight without interruption under any condition. They did enjoy running around whipping out, brandishing and racking unchambered guns pretty much every time they encountered someone questionable.

What made it more comical for this series is that every one of the villains were criminal and mathematical masterminds - all Fields Medal candidates knocking off 7/elevens with extreme mathematical precision and optimism.

If it wasn't for the driver of the get-away car using string theory to plan the escape route, the glorious and noble ubermen of the FBI would have been able to shut them down in a heartbeat.

G-d, how dumb.

In modern America, comms bandwidth is almost as universal and necessary as food (unless you work alone and don't need access to networks of any kind).

If you're poor, a per-unit tax will definitely hurt you more than its proceeds help you... even if you ascribe the best motives to government, and assume they run at maximum efficiency, this will result from administration overhead.

It's a regressive tax.

I wish we still taught kids math.

Around here, they usually land-spread the liquid manure in the Spring, before planting the crop, and it's not for row crops, but for grains, or field peas, or oil seeds, which get combined, and further processed before they hit your table.

Mrs. Jones flips shit, and asks "How could you do this?! What does Mrs. Smith have that I don't?!"

They exist in numbers greater than you might imagine. They're the backbone of America.

I would entreat you to take a moment to remember this plus the coming season and what we celebrate.

I've always loved that line of BS by the teaching cartel.

Basically the message is: If you want better teachers you need to pay us more.

So I then ask: Does that mean you are going to quit and have a more competent yet more expensive teacher take your place - or have you been holding back on us?

I didn't know that the secret to have good education was to pay the same worthless teachers more money and provide more benefits.

258 Mech Warriors of the Dark Crystal

In the waning days of the Star League, an experiment was conducted at a remote and secure military outpost to regain some of the lost military advantage. A new AI that was to be networked with just the neurohelms of the mechs of a reinforced Regimental Combat Team. Getting the human pilots out of the cockpits and thus raising the critical temperature the mechs could operate at. But something in the AI went wrong, rumors of sabotaged code, and the garrison found itself wiped out by the AI run mechs.

The Star League was too hard pressed to retake the outpost and instead destroyed any mention of the star system's location.

Now centuries later you are a rising mech warrior and the last map to the outpost has ended up in your hands. What shall you do? Who is out there who still wants that LosTech? Who wants to stop you?

Say that she got out of college in mid 20s and landed her union teaching gig with classroom sizes mandated to no more than 20 students. So we are talking thirty years, or less than three cycles of twenty students if assuming a K-12 (13 years government "education")

If she kept the same students from K through graduation, (assuming no drop-outs) we are talking maybe fifty kids educated in total. And for that she will receive how many millions in dollars of lifetime compensation from rookie to 90 y.o pensioner 65+ years of pay and benefits for fifty children? A bare minimum of three to five million in total tax payer compensation?

These kids would have to cough up at least $100,000 just in her labor costs alone - forget the cost of the administrative staff, the facilities, meal programs, trips, extracurriculars, the usual graft, corruption and theft added on...

Is a government "education" really worth over $250,000 per child - especially when an illegal alien punches out litters of offspring?

291 We need to start a charity to provide dildos for schoolteachers.

So the local school district, which serves a large Sanctuary City, put out a bond issue for the usual luxuries - plus they want to equip the students with laptop computers and home internet service. They want to finance this on a bond.

Forget how they will deal with the large continuous shrinkage in computer hardware assets for many of their illegal aliens - it means that the teachers are essentially running a kennel and the kids do computerized instruction in their own language at their own speed.

The drug addict bums who frequently congregate around the town homeless shelter (aka "Library") could easily be paid in Ripple and Mad Dog 20/20 to act as ersatz sentinels in the classroom while the precious darlings surf pr0n on their taxpayer provided computers all day.

Why do we need teachers?

I think I'm doing a good job, and I'm against merit-based pay for teachers. I been wrong before, though...

Do we hold doctors responsible for the health of their patients?
Do we hold police responsible for the law-abidingness of their constituents?
Is a cop in a low-crime small town a better policeman than one in a big city merely because the crime rate is lower in the small town?
Is the crime rate in Beverly Hills lower than Watts because the police are that much better???
Merit pay tries to reduce a multivariate product to a single cause.

And she probably does not think of herself as wealthy (even though a lifetime pension and retiring at 54 is pretty damn good.) Simply because she is a teacher.

I have run into this before. It is an odd attitude that strikes even the kids and spouses of teachers who are thoughtful, well reasoned, etc otherwise. You are talking to someone and all of a sudden they are looking at you with a blue eyed religious furor and it is always so jarring.

Well, you don't base merit-based pay upon the raw test scores of the students; you base it upon the amount of improvement in class's score after a year of the teacher working with them.

If you and Mrs. O'Grady both teach introductory auto mechanics to classes of 30 each at All-Ghetto Tech, and your class gets 4 A's, 10 B's, 10 C's, and 6 D's; and Mrs. O'Grady's class gets 0 A's, 2 B's, 15 C', and 13 D's; then you get the merit raise, and she doesn't.

They do. Most play geologists own shares in the company they work for, and performance bonuses are not unheard of, either. I am a day-rate contractor, and I will buy shares, too. I'm not talking about one-well companies drilling rank wildcats, where such a thing might be considered insider trading. No one is taking a shot at you personally. We are just reacting to the idea that we should try to fix the same problem (poor student performance) with the same solution (pay teachers more- irrespective of performance, better facilities, more materials, etc) when there seems to be no change in the problem when we do that- aside from teachers oftentimes (or at least the loudest of them) coming back and demanding more of the same without any changes otherwise.

That's a brilliant and accurate observation.

True story.

Fourth grade, I'm in the class and we're reading the print version of The Adventures of Mr. Toad.

My turn comes to read, and I'm doing all the voices, not stumbling over the words, reading it like an adult storyteller would read it to the class.

The teacher, spellbound.

My peers in the class, looking at me like I had grown third eye.

I was derided on the playground by my peers, and sent through batteries of "tests" by various upper echelon school admin and psych types.

The reaction and pressure from my peers made me really throttle things back there for the rest of the year.

I deliberately read in a monotone, just to get through the task, and that was that.

My teacher, crestfallen.

My peers, off to fresher sport.

This folks, is why a kid's parents divorcing SUCKS. My Dad was no longer around to back me up and teach me courage.

Come the fifth grade, and I had taught myself to fight on the schoolground. Never had a problem with "peers" after that.

Don't let your kids be a fourth-grade me.

Bit of an understatement.

My son has challenges. ADHD, attachment issues, etc. He also failed 4 out of six of his classes last quarter. He has a special "plan" to deal with his issues in school, but it doesn't do much except let the teacher tell him to get out of class when he is disruptive. You would think that failing that many classes would red-flag him for some serious special treatment, but no, they just keep on letting him take up space in the classroom and accomplish pretty much nothing.

All those lovely special education dollars? Heaven only knows where they end up, but it ain't in teaching kids with challenges.

I can ask, constantly, where is your homework, why aren't you doing your homework, what did you learn in school today, when are you going to start practicing for your math test. I can say no hockey until your work is done, no after school events until you pass your classes, on and on ad nauseum.

What I cannot do is follow him around in school and force him to pay attention, ask the questions, do the work.

Silly me, I was under the impression that we paid teachers to do that part. They don't. They don't even give him a stern look over the top of the glasses.

Public education is a sewer, and a racket to give outrageous benefits to the folks who graduated from teacher's college because they couldn't do math or physics or chemistry.

My son will not get an education until he joins the military.

361 I could imagine those in red areas of the country just not getting it. I could see them thinking things are not really so bad at schools etc. And they are likely right. Geography means these things are more theoretical than anything else. But for those "behind enemy lines", things like giving your kid's education over to the state are very serious concerns.

We have been talking about the leftist takeover of academia, media and the culture for so long, there is nothing new there. But I will admit even while I personally rang the bell on these things, it all seemed a bit academic back in the day. It seemed like we could change course with just a little effort.
That time has passed. Anti-American ideologies that seemed laughable just five or ten years ago are now de rigueur, they are mainstream thought, at least in blue areas. I don't even know what to tell a conservative parent in these regions. My one tip would be to screw the hands off approach. The hard left is not playing around here.

that is true, but the candy cane teacher got called on it. In blue areas they likely would have been promoted. I have seen changes in blue regions that would shock the libs of just a decade ago. Not denying the problem is everywhere, but the degree is not the same. At least in Middle America and outside the big cities, there is some resistance to those who want to upend it all.

Posted by: Quint at December 19, 2018 02:16 AM (n13/j)"...
This is huge misunderstanding and a large contributor to the mess we now find ourselves in.

We are more than 20 years past the point where any meaningful number of areas could sit back and say "oh we don't need to worry about that leftist BS in *our* schools, not around here".
The leftist takeover of the parts of higher ed that turned out teachers was virtually complete by that point; they simply hadn't started cranking up the crazy so much, and it was much easier for non-lefties to make it through the programs with their sanity and reputations intact. But they were still churning out little Pol Pot wannabes in vast numbers, who in turn populated public schools all over the nation.
I would go so far as to say the leftist takeover of public education has been the single greatest threat to our nation; and it largely happened while people were too busy with work, monday night football, and beer.

Common core seems almost like a joke. This is math. There is only one result, but some of the stuff I have seen for how they solve math problems seem back asswards. It is not wrong per se, but it seems simpler to learn the way we did (but this could also be because that is the way we think.)

One of the things about it is that it seems like a case of 'controlling how people think or approach problem solving.' Which then affects how they perceive the world around them. Kind of eerie, because it then starts making you wonder: do they want a world where people will add 2 and 2 and get 5.

Your point is well made. And I certainly was not trying to downplay the leftist take over of schools. When I see what they have done to the regions they turned deep blue, I would have hoped there was still a part of"Red America" that is not so badly affected. I agree that many who consider themselves to be "normals" have been just too distracted or disinterested to challenge the take over.

The other good point you make is that the left did this some time ago, but only in recent years have they felt it is safe to turn the fanaticism up to HI.

I think it makes rice in like four minutes. I only used mine once to make a pea soup. Which really pulverized the peas and ham.

It's purpose, to me anyway, is to expedite the cooking process.

I'm usually in no hurry so prefer a dutch oven and a really slow process.

The longer Trump allows this shit to go on the further away we get from be able to right the ship.

It's come out that one of the reasons that Comey blew up the other day was that he grew angry over being asked about the Steele Dossier and about his treatment of Clinton...

His response is who care's this is old news.

So the farther we go down the road the further we get away from the central questions that animated all of this.

Mueller's mandate such that it was, was to find if there was Russian Collusion between Trump and the Russians...

He can't because there wasn't so now he's spinning off in a myriad different directions, destroying people and perverting the rule of law and pushing this nation closer to banana republic status.

At this point there is only one man that can do anything about this and his name is Donald Trump and he's not doing anything about it.

I'm angry and frustrated and powerless.

Posted by: Blue Bird of F'ing Joy at December 18, 2018 10:40 PM (lD3vL)

What ultimately made Numb3rs unwatchable was that the FBI agent's math wizard brother was a math wizard in each and every field of mathematics and also was a wizard at applying said mathematics.

I've known math wizards. They are both highly specialized and non-adept at applying even basic living skills, much less their own fields' lessons.

Hey I'm getting it now I think

Here is the principle logical flaw in that whole reasoning: While in your argument you compare one region or one context to another, your criticism then quickly switches to one monolithic system with no contexts.

That is, when asking the question are Beverly Hills cops better than officers working in Watts you are taking the aggregate of all cops in BH to the aggregate of all cops in Watts. Then you criticize a system that dishes out pay per individual within each of those systems.

In the case of teachers, it has been understood that the market discovers the pay for a teacher for a particular school or school district. If the pay is too low then there would be few takers because those teachers would work a different school system or pursue a different career path, or just stay home watching TV waiting out the school system for a better offer.

Merit pay seeks to pay the individual within that school district more for work that can be compared to her peers within that same district, not to some Unicorn District far away.

Of course, I view the government school system as a welfare kennel operation, it should be treated as such and have the same expectations as such. If parents want to have their spawn succeed and get an education, it shouldn't be entrusted to apathetic, lazy and greedy union thugs whose primary focus is plundering a system - and have that system made up of a mostly apathetic and disengaged taxing structure.

I don't have a dog in the hunt outside the fact I'm being forced at gunpoint to underwrite a deliberately wasteful and corrupt system. When they talk about raising taxes to pay for a natatorium, all I see is taxes being raised for yet another luxury to be used by very few people.

The teachers know that regardless of class room performance, their pay is tired directly to their ability to intimidate politicians and manipulate the voter base.

Merit pay would be decided by corrupt and greedy administrative hacks who would use tax money to manipulate those who are dependent on winning their favor. So instead of teachers having sex with their students, they are performing some lewd act on their supervisors.

The whole system is evil and needs to be burned to the ground. Yet because of the lavish pension system, even if all schools were closed Right Now today, we would still need to tax the bejeebus out of everyone for the next forty years to pay off those pensioners.

It sounds very high church Lutheran. We sang one Christmas carol last week because I was "joyful "Sunday" and we sang "joy To the world" We will have another Christmas carol his week but I try to save them for Christmas Eve, because I like Advent to be Advent.

531 I wonder if the Carthaginians were grateful for what they had, right before the Romans took all their stuff.

Who knows - maybe they were thankful for the Romans.

I'm neither a Carthanganian nor a Roman and I can't be obsessively worried about who's gonna take my stuff every day. It's God's stuff anyway.
