As always, the chess/dress pr0n thread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment.

Easier Problem - White To Play (212)

Goal: White can force a mate in two
Hint: Make sure the black king stays in the corner

This is Cute

I feel sorry for the little boy. Evidently, his all-out attack with the king didn't work out as he had hoped.

More Challenging Problem - Black To Play (850)

Goal: Win decisive material
Hint: Force White to give up his rook

Easier Problem - White To Play

20181215 - Problem 1.jpg
k2q4/nb1N4/8/8/8/6Q1/8/6K1 w - - 0 1

1.Qb8+! Qxb8
2.Nb6#

Smothered mate, anyone?

More Challenging Problem - Black To Play

20181215 - Problem 2.jpg
8/4kp2/2Qp1p2/5P2/4P3/Pp1q4/1P1r4/KR6 b - - 0 1

1...Rd1
2.Rc1

Pointless is 2.Qc7+ Kf8 3.Qc8+ Kg7 4.Rc1 and White has run out of checks

2...Qc2!
3.Qxc2 bxc2

At this point, White is in a state of zugzwang. 4.Rxd1? is bad because 4...cxd1Q+ and 4.Rb1?? cxb1Q# is even worse. The best White can do is

4.Ka2 Rxc1 and wins the rook outright.

Hope to see you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

Consider 2...Qc2. Now what?

Posted by: OregonMuse. AoSHQ Thought Leader & Pants Monitor at December 15, 2018 06:10 PM (H+6se)

130 Easier puzzle:
1. Qb8+ Qxb8
2. Nb6#

More challenging puzzle:

1... Rd1!

Just taking the rook is no good: 1... Qxb1+ leads to 2. Kxb1, and even though Black can now check with 2... Rd1+, White's queen being on the c-file means 3. Qc1 neutralizes the threat.

Putting the rook on d1 first doesn't really advance anything, but it's not harmful either, because White can only check twice before Black can hide behind his pawn wall on the f-file. White can't take the rook because it's doom: 2. Rxd1? Qxd1+ 3. Qc1 Qxc1#

White's best play is 2. Rc1, moving the rook out where the queen can protect it. But even then, Black can play this killer move (which I didn't see, but Stockfish did):

2... Qc2!

Now White is totally screwed. His least terrible option is a queen exchange: 3. Qxc2 bxc2, leaving his rook pinned and indefensible. Even though he can squirrel out of mate with 4. Ka2, the damage will be done. Black can scoop the rook with 4... Rxc1 and in two moves he will still have his queen and rook while White will have neither.

If you really stick to your physical therapy and do it three times a day every day, you will heal and get back more than you think you will.

I had my rotator cuff reattached (it was completely detached) in April along with 29 screws to repair the damage from a fall my dog caused.

Six months later and I am still on the mend doing the natulis machines three times a week and my surgeon is cautiously optimistic that I will regain 75% mobility by next April.

One of the finest two weeks of my life was two weeks in Ireland. Some family members, but knew nobody else. I would walk into a pub, say something like "how are you doing today, can I have a Guinness, please?", and immediately at the bar, someone would say, "you're American!"

At least half the time, my first Guinness was free. I paid for their next one, as the fantastic conversations began. I will never forget the warmth and honesty of the Irish beer drinkers I had the chance to partake with.

4. The queen cannot leave the first row, except for occasional checks, until the white king is away from that corner; otherwise always mate within 2. And the king cannot get out of there while the black queen is on that diagonal.

The WQ can attack b3 via d1, but BQ can then interpose at c2, and WQ has to retreat but stay on row 1. Because qxq, pxq, king can't move to b1, pawn c1 and haz shiny new queen.

So now black can push along his d pawn, and white is screwed. His A pawn is always a day late. Black's only concern is keeping WQ from being able to take the d pawn and get a check at the same time.

271 LMAO on a Prime playlist I caught again for the first time in years "Ready to Go" by Republica. Unlike in the '90s I listened to the lyrics and it (finally) hit on me that it's probably a break-up song. If so, it's quite possibly the perkiest break-up song ever.
