In a fit of road rage, a drunken man chased a car while brandishing a sword and snow shovel before spitting at police when they took him into custody Saturday, according to jail records. Early Saturday morning, the man became embroiled in "a road rage incident" on Pioneer Road in Draper, according to jail records. He then followed the other car involved in the incident to the driver’s workplace on Fort Street and confronted the person inside the car, attempting to punch them through the window.
A Southwest Airlines pilot pulled a U-turn to make an unplanned medical delivery to Seattle. A human heart, which was supposed to be delivered to Seattle, wasn’t unloaded from the plane, The Seattle Times reports. The heart was loaded onto the plane by a courier service for the plane’s Sacramento-to-Seattle leg. The crew realized the heart was still in the cargo hold Sunday in the middle of the Southwest Airlines flight’s Seattle-to-Dallas leg. The pilot made a U-turn and returned to Seattle, the paper reports. The heart was bound for a tissue processor to harvest a valve. “Nothing is more important to us than the safety of our customers and the safe delivery of the precious cargo we transport every day,” a Southwest spokesman told the Seattle Times.
One passenger told the newspaper that when the captain explained the situation to the people aboard the flight, they reacted with kindness. Once they made it back to Seattle, passengers had to transfer to a different aircraft for an unrelated mechanical issue, causing a total of about a 5-hour delay, the paper reported. Commercial airlines are known to work with companies that ship organs intended for transplant. That is a small amount of their business, however, with the Dallas Business Journal reporting that it accounts for less than 1% of Southwest’s revenue.

I'm no Catholic, but I believe it is standard Catholic theology to say that no one can be said (apart from those sainted) to definitely go to heaven. That's the "sin of presumption". No one knows if their works outweighed their sins. So what this cleric said seems uncontroversial according to their theology.

I can remember remote terminals via dial-up modem back when I was in school. Simple text mode terminal, and it could be slow.
Now, with this, I'm running the full GUI at max resolution, and it's fast as hell. Both ends here are 200Mbps down and 20Mbps up. So I've got a 20Mbps connection. This is just amazing to me.

In Lafayette Indiana, I had a number that was one digit removed from the number for the Sportsman Bar & Grill. I would get calls at 1:00 a.m. asking, "Is Harry (Bill, Jim, etc.) there?", usually from from a female, who I assumed was Harry's wife.
I'd just tell them "Wrong number", and hang up.
The second experience was much more annoying. Pro Percussion (percussion instruments) in Smyrna Georgia had a bold marquis with their telephone number prominently displayed as "436-DRUM".
Clever, right? Except...it turns out that drummers are not such swell spellers, and if you dialed 436-DROM, then you got my number.
This did not happen so often that it was anything but amusing, but often enough that I eventually wearied of it. Finally, when someone would call and ask "Do you have Ludwig such and such, I would say "Sure, come down today, everything is half price."
I'm sure it made for some pissed off people, but there was no way they had any idea who was responsible.

This week, our movie group watched Christmas in Connecticut (1946) with Barbara Stanwyck, Dennis Morgan, and Sydney Greenstreet. Splendidly funny movie with Stanwyck as a Martha Stewart-type happy homemaker for a major women's magazine, who in real life can't even boil water. Her publisher, Greenstreet, knows her only through her articles, and wants her to entertain a coming-home soldier (Morgan) at her "farm" for Christmas (she actually lives in an urban apartment). Needless to say, hilarity ensues, and we all had a good time.
But it brought up an interesting question: Besides Christmas in Connecticut, Barbara Stanwyck appeared in two other Christmas-themed movies, Remember the Night (1940) and Meet John Doe (1941). Has any other star appeared in as many Christmas movies? Someone else remembered that, besides It's a Wonderful Life, Jimmy Stewart had appeared in another Christmas movie, The Shop Around the Corner (1940). But that's only two.
We couldn't think of anybody else who starred in as many Christmas movies as Barbara Stanwyck, so she must hold the record for the present. Can any of my fellow Morons think of any other actor who can tie or surpass her?

"Zesting" is what I'd call scraping the skin, or grating the skin. She's got this special tool, which is basically like a file, but it's a tiny little grater. You scrape off the yellow of the skin and make a little pile, which you then put in whatever the hell you're making.

I've told this story before, but awhile back an apartment building had my number on a billboard for people to call looking to rent an apartment. Had to track down the company that owned the building to get them to change it.

I went wild with that last night. I got a heat sink/cooler for this thing beyond the stock Intel thingy. It was Titan something or other, and I had no idea how big the thing was.
It's a big ol' heat sink with heat pipes and fins, and looks like a little 2-cycle chain saw engine mounted on the motherboard. Anyone who dumps that much heat into a little chip is a lunatic.
But the damn thing is keeping the CPU at about 100F. It will rise to about 115F max wide ass open looks like. My other machine will hit 145F wide open, but I need to go in there and blow out the dust, I think.

I thought one of the take-aways from Dante's Inferno (admittedly, I have never actually read it) was the idea that nobody is beyond redemption, even in hell. True repentence is true repentence, and the window never closes. Of course, repentence under duress is not true repentence, so don't put it off that long unless you expect a long period of trial to demonstrate repentence.
The Catholic burial policy always bothered me. God is all forgiving, so he will find a way. God is all powerful, so if he chooses to keep them out, somebody who dies with mortal sin and does not repent will not make it into a consecrated graveyard - there is no need for people to forbid it. People always seem to think that God is just like them, only more petty and less powerful.

I try to wrap presents that look nice, but I'm horrible at it. On the plus side, my niece sent me a pic of my great nephew on Santa's lap wearing an outfit I bought (and wrapped) for him for his first birthday back in October. She said right when she opened it she knew that was his Santa Clause outfit. That made me pretty happy.

Nice weather, although a bit cold, did some hiking, sat in the Awanni hotel (I'll never call it the Majectic) for a couple of Irish Coffees.
Was kind of sad though. A fire swept through part of the Valley floor last Summer, so lots of damage that will take DECADES to recover from...

Our family always stayed at the "Lower River" National Park-run campground, which I've read and heard was flooded out quite some time ago, so no more camping there.

Our research group at Betkeley used to rent a place to stay there one weekend each winter and go skiing, either downhill or cross country, in the snowfields up top.

Yeah.... its interesting living here... not a damn thing here... but its 2 hours from the Coast, 2 Hours from the City (San Fran), 2 hours from Yosemite... 2 hours from reasonable skiing... 3 1/2 hours from Great Skiing (Tahoe).
So it takes a bit of planning to do things...

Mammoth is a GREAT Mountain. Definitely a destination resort, but REALLY good skiing.
And the town is a hoot. Good places to stay, good bars and places to eat. Lots to do... and not anywhere near as expensive as Vail or other top notch resorts.

UC Merced is still pretty small...
And its the weirdest college I've ever seen. Not a single College Bar ANYWHERE in town.
And even though there are a couple of bars here that have live Music, you never see the College age kids there.
Not sure what the heck they are doing for fun.
But there are also a LOT of Foreign students on campus....

I'd estimate there were 35 to 40 boats in the parade itself this year, but a lot of other boats are decorated too. There's a lot of activity in the marina. There must be 50 people on a 45-ft boat right across from me, partying and watching the parade. It's a great time. I try to make it every year if I can.

Theres also a thing they call the Chinq a pin run.
Its a kind of cross country, but you can do it on downhill skis. It starts at Badger and ends up a few miles later at a Gas Station called Chinq a pin.
Definitely an end of day run where you have someone meet you at the gas station... LOL.

It still amazes me after the double eye rebuild how clearly I see, and how much easier it is to hit what I shoot at. Especially since I was convinced that my vision was pretty darn good prior.
If any of you are contemplating eye surgery DON'T put it off. Your life will improve exponentially afterward.

Congrats on your successful grouse outing. I second your remarks about the eye surgery. Had the refractive lens replacement done for cataracts this summer. My vision is much better, and I need to use reading glasses only for very close work and/or fine print.
BTW, worked on the Ford rear brakes yesterday. Rear caliper slides were good, on the left side at least, but the parking brakes shoes, adjuster, and hold-downs were all trashed. Got parts on order.

Don't be skeptical. Zest (orange, lemon or lime) is tons of flavor with no fat; great for dieters/people with health issues. But don't use a box grater, get a Microplane Zester. One of the best kitchen 'gadgets' I've ever had.

Friend of mine's husband makes lemon cookies. I gave them a Microplane zester last year for Christmas. He loves that zester when he makes those cookies. I'm still waiting for some to be mailed to me. But apparently the cookies never last long in their house so I might be waiting a loooong time.

And yet it was the drum-type parking brake, enclosed in the center "hat" of the brake rotor that was trashed. Rotor surfaces and brake pads were good. I used an abrasive wheel to clean some black oxide off the rear rotor, and when I was done, it was smooth and true, and nearly unworn.
I think when dirt and road salt find their way into the drums, they cannot get out again. On the rotor faces, they get thrown off, or wiped off.

One you get a zester, you realize how you've wasted the zest one's whole life. Now when I buy a lemon, e.g., I zest first to use in a sauce/dish, then I have the lemon for slices to go with tea or fish or steak. I was skeptical at first about the cleanup as I hate cleaning zest from box graters because it's such a pain. But, boy, is that zester a snap to clean. They really don't take up much space in a kitchen, ether, especially a small kitchen like mine where counter/drawer space is at a premium. I only have a few dedicated/one use gadgets, the zester being one, a garlic press and an olive pitter being the others (that I can think of off the top of my head).
Definitely worth the $15-20 for a Microplane zester. They pretty much last forever, too, as long as one keeps the plastic sleeve to store the thing in.

To be honest, a ginger mincer is something I've never heard of. If I need ginger minced, I let my knife do the talking. But I will use the zester to grate ginger when I need it, like for my carrot-ginger soup. Takes a bit of time, though, to grate the ginger.
