House Democrats caved to their progressive wing Tuesday and decided to scrap a rule that would have required a three-fifths supermajority vote to pass any new tax hikes.

Democratic New York Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez celebrated the move.

"When I first won, folks said we were too naive, inexperienced, and uninformed to be effective," Ocasio-Cortez wrote on Twitter Tuesday. "Yet in our first weeks, we elevated Green New Deal to national urgency, secured 30 cosponsors on a Select Committee, and helped stop a bad tax rule. I'd say we're off to a good start."

I give them credit for consistency. If you really, truly believe in your heart of hearts that global warming or climate change or whatever they're calling it now is a super-duper-eleventy!!!!11!!! level crisis, a straight carbon tax is the most transparent and least intrusive way to deal with the problem.

Which is one reason I'm skeptical about climate change: The fact that the socialists want to use the LEAST-INTRUSIVE solution, instead of their usual solution of just handing everything over to well-connected bureaucrats infused with a level of regal authority that would make a Chinese emperor blush, makes me think it's really just about the taxes for them. Funny that so many libertarians can't perceive that.

My limited experience is that when an alternator dies, the car just fades until it stops, after the battery drains off and dies.

If the lights and electricity were flickering on and off, it could be something as simple as a corroded ground wire connection. On the frame, not the battery.

This has happened to me twice, two different cars. The second time it cost a lot less as I knew what to check before spending money.

I'm probably completely wrong with your problem, however.

D'oh Boy is house sitting for a vet friend and his active duty wife who is on leave.

Yeah, that's why I'm ambivalent about it. Because I kind of have a good thing going here.

But the cat stuff is super bizarre.

Well, in that case, carry on.
I dated a girl pre-B'Gal who had 3 cats and two dogs, which was wayyy too many IMO. One of the cats I never saw unless it was running away from me. Another cat would take a running jump through the sliding door screen whenever it was open and bust it up. Last cat was pretty kewl: I got up off the couch one night when we were watching TV and when I came back, he raised his paw up in the air so I could sit back down next to him.
One dog would cry all night because he was in his crate. The last dog was a very sweet black lab about 12 years old who insisted on me playing fetch with her despite her age.
The chick's mom was why I broke up with her: she was a psycho who stared a hole through me one time at a party. Strange lady, seriously strange. The chick would also buy a bunch of stuff from a store then return almost all of it a couple of days later.
Adios.

Some of the hybrid McLarens look pretty snappy. Funny thing: McLaren P1 hybrid- 19MPG when gas motor is running. Electric range- 6.8 miles. For some reason that makes me smile.

The thing about it is it is never about the performance (with the above exceptions), it is always about the virtue signalling. That shows in marketing and the sad part is in how we view the car.

If these had come up organically due to trying to push the limits of performance (and electric motors are a good way to do that) it would have been accepted by everyone- with some good on the side (I look at lower gas consumption as a net positive, no matter if it is gas, hybrid or electrical.)

However, they never talk about the downsides of an electric vehicle- range, weight, etc.

Because the government is pushing, for no good reason, and because of the rest of the anti-American political baggage that comes with them.

I like the idea of electric cars and their ranges have come well within my daily driving habits, but buying an electric car, these days, is tantamount to supporting the commie dipshits in their pursuit to end America.

We had the same thing happen with light bulbs. The government had to stick their fat fingers in and threaten/ban/entice everyone to leave incandescents. But the government picked compact fluorescents, which were the shittiest lights ever made and they set about banning 100 watt incandescents for no Earthly reason. Meanwhile, everyone started moving to LEDs when the technology started to make sense in terms of the light they provided and the cost.

People would have moved to these LEDs on their own, anyway, because they are generally better (and people with generators - needed because our electric grids have gotten so weak and brittle - understood that they needed to reduce light wattage to have their generators work much at actually running things) and are more useful in being able to work for a decade and are much more flexible in use. But the government had to jump in and start pushing people around to get them to buy all those crappy CFL pieces of shit.

$70k? The one I rode in 2 years ago was $102k. That's a lot for a car that's only good around town. Even then, you have to find places to park where you can charge it.
And what if it's charging but not enough to run and some one in your fambly has to go to the ER suddenly? That's another bill from the EMTs. But I suppose if you can afford one of those things, you can afford the extra expense that comes with it.

The various forms of clinical depression are no joke. People who have never had anyone around them touched by that have no idea how bad it can be. It drives people to suicide, because in their darkness they can see no hope.

Best of luck to you and your son, may God watch over you both.

IMO, the sound of the engines is half of the appeal of motorsports. But not so much on my 57 mile daily commute. I'm just trying to get there, and the engine noise doesn't add anything good to the experience. I'd love a Tesla, but I can't afford that.

My Suburban has a range of over 600 miles on a tank of gas. I will need a pit stop before the truck does.

And I can fill the tank, take a leak, grab a coffee, and be rolling down the highway again inside of ten minutes. Your Tesla is going to be hunkered down on its charging cable for the greater part of an hour.

You may not believe this, but there's a way to actually know how much fuel is in that gas tank thingy in your car. Amazingly enough, it's called a "gas gauge." It's right in front of your field of view if you look out the front. There's usually a needle inside a graph that says "E" on one end and "F" on the other end.
The "E" doesn't mean it has "Enough" gas in it and the "F" doesn't mean the car is "Finished" with the gas in the tank.

When they bricked you couldn't even tow them. You had to get them hoisted onto a flatbed because you couldn't make them move, at all.

Now, they put an extra 5KwH spare battery power in to stop that. You could still run that down to 0 and be bricked but you'd have to really try.

One of the biggest differences between electric cars and regular cars is that you can't just leave an electric car for any serious amount of time (like at at airport parking) without having it plugged in for some time.

You can call an engine a 'motor', but never call a motor an engine, unless it really is an engine.

I've been looking up discussions on the semantic distinctions, and I don't really like them. It would take me awhile to define them properly.

An electric motor is a motor, not an engine. An air motor is a motor, not an engine. Same with a hydraulic motor. They are all motors, never engines.

But an internal combustion engine is an engine, and you can call it a motor. But it's an engine.

Another consideration: the range of an electric car depends on what accessories are on. You're driving through North Dakota in the winter, with the heater blasting, you're not going to get the range they claim. You're driving through Louisiana in August, with the AC roaring away, same thing.

How much less mileage do you get? That's for you to figure out.

ROFL. I laugh at the Millennial idiots who wouldn't understand the irony of that.

We could just eliminate the AC middle man, nothing but additional waste anyway, and have the generator be DC and directly drive the motor.

Same principle as diesel-electic trains.

I wonder if anyone seriously looked at diesel-electric for vehicles, cars or trucks. I wonder what that would look like, tradeoffs, performance, etc wise.

You could do 4-wheel drive easy. Have a motor on each wheel, and eliminate the drive train.

And series field DC motors can put out some serious torque.
