(This is what I was going to say before you butted in, Kris).

When it's embiggened you really see how the paint is troweled on in clumps and I think it would be fun to explore that.

My pleasure!

I have moderated my impressionist mania over the years because too much of it masquerades as impressionism but in reality seems more primitivist.

But Monet at his best has that lovely simplicity that hides complexity, and damn! His colors are so wonderful and pleasing.

28 There's an old mansion here on Lake Geneva, the family of which were great friends of Monet. He often visited them here for the summer. Upon his death, Monet left this local family with a number of his paintings, which they donated to the Art Institute of Chicago. I forget the family name. I think there is a wing at the Art Institute named for them, but I can't recall their name. They also were friends of the Henry Ford family and the Rockefellers, who they also entertained here in Lake Geneva back in the Golden Age.

30 Monet's waterlilies series was made in the later part of his life. He had retired to Giverny and had designed the entire gardens and landscape just so he could paint it. His whole purpose was to capture light, color and textures. So here you see the smoothness of the water's surface contrasted by the rougher forms of the lily pads. then you have the horizontals of the pond contrasted with the verticals of the willow branches. An finally, the dramatic arc of the bridge (shape that appears nowhere else in the painting) cutting through the center of the composition. And it's all done in a monochromatic blue/green tone.

Beautiful.

Posted by: J.J.Sefton at December 10, 2018 09:08 AM (/9p9e)

No. And not a slam at you, JJ, who know how I feel, but I came to the realization a long time ago that going the "cringe" route plays right into the left's hands and sets a precedent that we, at this time, are the arbiters of what ought and ought not to be seen.

Which, of course, leads very quickly into, "Well, what about Birth of A Nation orJud Suss? Should they be allowed to be shown?"

The past is a foreign country, as has been said. I don't believe that a movie, song or painting should be wiped out because it - at this particular moment in time - triggers all sorts of modern bugaboos. It should be left intact as an example of what was considered common then and people should be allowed to decide for themselves whether they wish to continue watching it or not. Burning books and people, and all that.

And for grammie - I may be wrong. I was always under the impression that Vera-Ellen was anorexic, and you'll find that repeated in a number of stories and biographies. I do believe she had some sort of eating disorder, which is why her neck is always covered up in most any photo or movie still, but. . .

A friend who knew her for the last 20 years of her life is quoted as saying, "All of her life she wore something around her neck, a necklace, a choker, a scarf, a collar, etc., etc. It was her "trademark" like Van Johnson wore red socks. I saw her neck many times. It was lovely. . .like Audrey Hepburn's."

So I don't really know.

I imagine that there is a lot of rough texture in a painting like this. Wouldn't dust collect easily on the painting? How do they keep it clean?
Posted by: grammie winger, church pirate at December 10, 2018 09:48 AM (lwiT4)

Good galleries should have good ventilation and climate control. Also, paintings usually aren't out in public all the time. They rotate them, for variety and protection. Light, even the special gallery light, can cause damage over time. Patrons also cause damage. And when a painting or sculpture is set to be displayed or put away, they are usually sent to the conservator's dept. for a check-up, cleaning and repairs -- if needed.

I agree - although every now and then even I see something that really shouldn't have been done, even at the time. A couple weeks ago TCM had the silent version of Wizard of Oz, (not very good) and I watched it just because. There is one black character in it, who plays that movies version of the lion and who is mainly comic relief, and in the credits his name was given as "G. Howe Black". 119 MP4 - I saw Jud Suss in college in a film class once. Context is important--it was a class specifically about Nazi era cinema, how the works were structured for propaganda purposes. Nobody in that class had any illusions about the nature of what the piece was selling--the point was to study how it was done.

That class, and one or two others like it I took, are largely why I can't not notice the techniques in widespread use in modern American media to sell their own narratives.

From the inside. I have never been blessed enough to test this though.

If you go from the bright, Turkish day into the dark, candle-lit interior, the arcade of windows that rings the base of the dome is supposed to be blinding. And then you're supposed to notice the enormous dome that just hangs there over head. I'm sure it was even more spectacular with the light then reflecting of the mosaics. THEN you also have the smell of incense and the sounds of worship. Wow.

That was the black actor Spencer Bell, who specialized (or, more precisely, was forced into) stereotypical "darkie" parts as a lazy, cowardly, shiftless, superstitious bumpkin.

It was Larry Semon, who directed Oz and played the Scarecrow, who insisted Bell be credited as "G. Howe Black." He did it again in 1925s The Perfect Clown.

If it helps at all, Semon was known in his day as being an arrogant dickwag, so him insisting Bell take that nasty name is right in character for him.

A good introduction would have mentioned this. I would have.

White South Africans could be forced to give up their own homes from next year as the nation's government steamrolls through plans for land expropriation over claims 'Africa's original sin' must be reversed.

The National Assembly agreed to the establishment of a committee that will draft an amendment to section 25 of the Constitution - a law which will allow the government to take homes from the people - and refuse to pay them compensation.

As many in the nation see the move as retribution for the 'original sin' when decades ago black people were driven off their land, it is believed white farmers will be driven from their homes immediately.

When he finally got back, I asked him if he ever had any dream interaction with the family. He said no. I told him about mom's dream. He just laughed and said the Lord works in mysterious ways.

207 Wasn't Monet on the Nazi list of decadent artists during their great art heist?

Piqued my interest, so I did a little research.

Neither Monet nor Impressionists were displayed in the Entartete Kunst (degenerate art) exhibition.

There was an art dealer during the Nazi era who got permission to sell degenerate art abroad to raise funds for good pure art.

In 2010 his son, 77, was discovered to have 150 works including a Monet (Waterloo Bridge), Picassos, and other notables worth supposedly euro 1 billion.

That's the closest nexus I can find between Monet and the bad list.

I don't recall why exactly, though she did say something about the rental property (currently being confiscated) being their retirement plan. As of now, I suspect that finding a buyer for property that will be confiscated in a few months might be rather difficult - you'd have to sell to a black person, and even then blacks might worry about losing it to a rapacious state - and without liquid assets getting out might be rather difficult, particularly since most countries like immigrants to bring something more than the clothes on their back and some general skills.

We are talking about some fairly elderly people here, mind. Not easy to uproot yourself at that age. Besides, how quickly would you abandon your home? We can't even get folks to switch states here...

Any excuse will do at this point. It's been insanely high for a very long time. I don't try to predict the stock market, but I would not be surprised if we just get effectively sideways movement with small overall losses for the next 5-10 years. Equities have been overbought for way too long - something is going to give. And keep in mind how the major indices are dominated by mega-cap stocks, so movements in those specific firms translate to large movements in the index. Rising interest rates will also force some (desperately needed) capital reallocation, and equities are going to get hurt in that process.

It's not a lefty agenda, Wall Street has no ideology.

Oh, but Wall Streeters vote liberal and contribute to Democrats! Yes they do. But on the trading floor all that counts is money. No one loses money intentionally to support an ideology.

The markets run on greed and are powered by greed computers designed to maximize greed. That's neither good nor bad, it's a state of nature.

Explanations as to why the market is down may have some ideological spin, but the underlying facts do not.

I found that out in 2008 when mccain and Palin were running. Saw a picture of Palin on a magazine cover at the grocery store and told my wife about the fake story running around where Palin said she could she Russia from her house.

A "lady" in line overheard me and called me a liar. I told her to look it up on google for the truth, she responded by saying "I already know the truth".

315 There are a number of African countries that see white Boer farmers as a vehicle to increase their foreign exchange. Subsistence farming doesn't make African leaders rich.

I don't know a whole hell of a lot about Africa... I understand that Botswana is a pretty reasonable place, by African standards, anyway.

Would SA farmers be welcome there, I wonder?
---------------------
Kenya is the most likely landing spot for white farmers. Botswana isn't that easy to farm. The problem for the Boers is not being able to take any capital out of SA. Without capital farmers don't do very well. Land, machinery and labor costs bucks. So this is just stealing from whitey on many levels.

But what amount of damage could a restaurant owner (front or not) actually do, that they couldn't glean remotely?

Hum-Int (human intelligence or "boots on the ground") is always the best form of intelligence. To be able to blend in with your enemy and study them from within is a powerful asset, in addition to being a psychological boost.

They really don't see it that way. They say WE'RE the embarrassment to America by electing a dolt like Trump. They despise us more than we despise them. Civil interaction with them is impossible.

We've embarrassed them in front of their European friends.

Isn't that the truth. They consider it cultural tourism. Cut one off from the safety of the smirking little herd, though, and you've got one scared, speechless soy.
