The Morning Rant

talking ape.jpg
"I've just thought of what would be the best Christmas gift ever. I would like to see Sarah Sanders punch Jim Acosta in the face. And I'd like it to be just like the scene at the end of Die Hard where that weaselly, repellent TV reporter walks up to John McClane and starts to pester him, and then Holly steps up and pops him a good one right in his smug puss. And as they're driving off, Acosta looks at the camera and asks 'Did you get that?' Ha, yeah, that sounds exactly like something that the self-fixated pr*ck would say. Plus, I think this would greatly improve the WH press briefings. If the pool reporters knew that seriously dumb questions or pompous grandstanding might earn them a good hard one across the snout, they would straighten up and act like adults. Or they'd get together and throw out bad actors like Acosta and April Reid who, obviously, aren't serious journalists, but are only there to aggrandize themselves."

4 I got willowed, but it's still Pearl Harbor Day, and a little tale for the Horde:

My uncle was there and would have been on one of the ships except that he'd just had his appendix out and was in the hospital recovering. He heard the bombings begin and ran for the harbor. And helped those who were brought into the hospital with far worse than an appendectomy scar.

When he shipped soon after, he and the nurse who'd tended him had fallen in love. He told her to wait for him, he was coming back for her. He served on a supply ship in the Pacific, where it was so hot that he rubbed a hole in his lucky silver dollar that he carried in his pocket.

She waited, and he did return, and they married after the war. That warn-through silver dollar was modified a bit and became his wedding ring.

Which is why I have a branch of my family in Hawaii.

87 Only new-to-me tidbit on Pearl Harbor in a long time was the fact that Gen. Marshall refused to use the "secure" telephone system in place at the time (forget the reason he gave), even when it was accepted that the 14th cable to the Japanese embassy was a lock-cinch indication of imminent hostilities. Think it was about 90 minutes before the first wave hit Pearl.

Of course it would have still been a general warning, and all the fundamentals that led people not to expect Hawaii being the target still applied. One irony is that Pearl had been conducting fairly robust war drills for a while before Dec. 7, but Adm. Kimmel had chosen that day as a rest day.

It's Dogma for the new secular religion which is establishing itself. As in any society, those who speak out against accepted Dogma are ostracized and shunned by the vast majority of ordinary people, who will always follow the accepted Dogma of the day without question.

We are falling back into being a more fundamentalist, faith based society than we have been in centuries. And yet it's a faith with no god and no true morals, just situational preferences and the will to power. It's not hard to see where that will lead.

There's quite a trick to the "Icecaps are Shrinking!!!" game. The Icecaps shrink every spring and summer - they grow back every late fall and winter. So the warmistas make their measurements every spring and summer, and say "look how much they have shrink! We are all going to perish!!!" Then, as they grow back again, they say nothing and instead go "oh let's talk about Russian Collusion or something." And then, 6 months, later, they go right back to "The Icecaps are Shrinking!!!" game.

They've been doing this for at least 20 years now.

There's a book called "You'll Never Eat Lunch in this Town Again." It's about Hollywood during that era. The writer was familiar with the house and location. She said there is no way that the neighbors did not hear the screams of the victims. Sounds carry in that canyon.

I recently read a short horror story about those canyons. A writer trying to make it in the biz loses his dog and goes off to look for him. He gets killed by a mountain lion, and the last thing he hears is the applause of the Hollywood people in the hills looking down at him.

I think McCarthy is totally blind to the corruption of his former workmates. I honestly don't think he's crooked himself, just that he "projects" his own relative virtue onto people who have none.

I expect the best we can hope for is that Barr is like that... and that's not a good thing. Even if he isn't a coup participant, if he can't face up to what's happening, he'll end up no better than Sessions.

Unless this guy is quietly carrying a chip on his shoulder against the DoJ, this won't end well, and his pedigree doesn't suggest that.

Melcher knew Manson. Melcher was a record producer, and he'd taken some meetings with Manson, who desperately wanted to be a recording star. Point of order - William Garretson was the caretaker. Parent was an 18-year old kid who casually knew Garretson and had driven over to the Cielo Drive house to sell him a radio.

Police always suspected that Garretson heard the shot that killed Parent as well as the screams from the main house and hid in the caretaker's house because he was too frightened to do anything.

Cary Grant was the best there was at what he did. Late in his career, too, he could have shifted to being a character actor; look at his wonderful performance in Father Goose. But he (maybe wisely?) decided to retire from films before he appeared in something that would have tarnished his name.

Years later, the story goes, he was in line at a celebrity event. The girl at the check-in table says, "Name?"

"Cary Grant."

Girl looks up. "You don't look like Cary Grant."

Grant, with a sigh: "No one does."

Posted by: josephistan at December 07, 2018 11:58 AM (7HtZB)

Yeah, Berkowitz. . .

The late writer Maury Terry penned The Ultimate Evil, which relied heavily on Berkie and his claim about a Satanic cult being responsible for most of the Son of Sam murders, while he was the designated fall guy.

One claim made by Berkowitz was that a Stanford co-ed, Arlis Perry, had been "hunted, stalked and slain" by a member of a Satanic cult who had connections to Manson.

However, the Perry case was recently in the news because an arrest was made, and the killer turns out to have been a Stanford security guard (IIRC, the one who discovered Perry's body) and who had no connection to Manson or Berkowtiz whatever.

So it is a puzzlement what's true and what isn't.

212 I know a guy who spent a lot of money putting a big-ass solar array in
his backyard back when Obama was paying people to do that. Proud of it,
too. Saving the world and all that. And then when we got a big snowstorm
and the power went out he discovered that it wasn't connected to his
house and that he would have to spend thousands more to use "his" solar
panels to power his house when a tree knocks a power line down.

I jokingly offered to sell him our $400 generator.

218 So in a country of 330 million, Trump couldn't find anyone besides a former AG to be his AG? I wonder if, at least, there was a very clear conversation about DOJ and the entire "justice" and judicial system, and constitution, being on fire, and the need for urgent, unprecedented action to try and rescue it. For some reason I'm not optimistic about this.

Barr's nomination is actually quite clever. Not only is he a solid conservative (read his response to Joe Biden about Roe v. Wade back during his first confirmation, and his more recent comments about Uranium One and you will have a pretty clear idea of where he stands), but he was also easily confirmed the first time he was nominated, so the ridiculous sh*t storm that the Dems will raise this time ought to give Trump some very powerful talking points about how that party has descended into madness.

I think it's some kind of attempt by leftists to unite all the various victim groups under one umbrella, so that a woman is a gay is a minority is a tranny is a homeless vet is a football player with a concussion, etc etc. And maybe they're trying to unite all the various causes too, like global warming = immigration = opioid addiction = income inequality = gun violence = plastic straws, etc etc.

And the bad guy is the American constitution and free market.

Something like that. A 21st Century twist on "workers of the world unite".

230 Loosely translated from the original professional-gibberisch, "intersectionality" refers to the idea that all forms of social oppression are ultimately the same thing. The same process. There are "The Privileged" and "The Oppressed". Whether by class, race, sex, or any other form of dichotomy, every aspect of social life can (must?) be viewed as a form of Rebellion against an Oppressor. Intersectionality refers then to the multifaceted nature of such Oppression, the nature of which implies that the more "boxes" you can tick off, the more oppressed you are and, consequently, the more valid your opinion is.

In other words, warmed over 19th century twaddle wrapped up in the pseudoscientific jargon of 21st century adolescents.

233 Somewhere on the Bonneville Power Administration site, there is a graph that shows the amount of power generated by the dams and other renewables like solar and wind. The renewables generate a tiny amount of power compared to what the dams create. There are some European countries that went with renewables and found that it just didn't work. If we start now, we might be able to come up with something that explains why it doesn't work, in terms the average voter can understand.

He said in an interview that he'd heard "strange" things happening that night, but he wasn't sure what was going on. He'd looked out the window and seen people running across the lawn, and he'd heard screams and he heard Folger said "you can stop [stabbing me] now, you've killed me," but he didn't think it was real. He said he was confused by her words. How could Folger be talking if she was dead? He also described when the killers came to the guest house and tried to get in, rattling the door handle and looking in the windows.

I give this guy a pass, regardless. He was still a kid (19 or 20 at the time), basically, and there was nothing he could have done to stop the murders. Tex Watson would have shot him dead, just like Steve Parent, if he'd tried to intervene, or the others would have stabbed him to death like they did to Tate and Folger. He was lucky to survive the night.

246 Regarding Barr's appointment,

I have no idea whether or not it will prove to be a wise choice.

However, one of the issues is running a massive government department, especially one that is as political as the AG slot, in a time of investigations is not the skill set of a legislator. In department after department, someone who was a legislator, even one with a bit of experience in that agency, often flame out. Legislators, more or less, can do all sorts of things that an executive branch person is constrained from doing.

Some have proposed a state AG for the position but remember Sessions was a state AG and then a legislator. The DOJ has systematically been the enforcement arm of the deep state since the Hoover era.

Combined with the FBI, they do all sorts of things that undermine the rule of law and have been doing these sorts of things for years under the aegis of a war on drugs, national security, etc. There are some honorable people in the institution but like the Mafia, the higher reaches are open only to those in the club who are willing to play ball.

Note how Scott Pruitt was undermined at the EPA and you get some sense of how a new federal cabinet member can be gotten rid of by the commissars of that department. Others are coopted and get to stay if they go "native".

There are also problems with appointing some young gun as the AG post is more or less temporary and the temptation to maintain a future career path by compromising with the swampy legal community is pretty overwhelming. These people will ruin you in a heartbeat (see Ray Donovan for example) over your politics and reform efforts.

Trump is rolling the dice with someone old enough probably not to care about future career plans or a political career but someone who does know something about the culture and leadership of the DOJ. He also has prior experience with Mueller, for good or ill, and probably knows the measure of the guy. Unlike a new outside hire, Barr is less likely to be jammed up by those "innocent" suggestions by permanent staff to do something stupid (curtains, security plans, etc.) that cause a lack of clout. A former AG also will not be as pliable when the old "national security" rationale is used for idiocies like the Russia Russia Russia coup plot.
