A typical Saturday morning, drink your drink of choice. Don't run with sharp objects, play well with others and be nice to the 'ettes.

It's Jonathan Haidt, talking about what's wrong with college campuses today and how to fix it.

That's a good video. A lot of our societal problems are caused by outside agents intent upon turning us into sniveling whiners instead of confident, intelligent adults.

That's also a condemnation of our current feminized society where the first thing a child is taught to do is run to Mommy (or the State) at the slightest provocation. Which they've also been taught to be overly sensitive to.

Sisters Beb and Ieneke Lambermont, aged 76 and 67 respectively, were among them.

"Our children are hard-working people but they have to pay taxes everywhere. You can't get housing anymore. It is not going well in Dutch society," Ieneke said. "The social welfare net we grew up with is gone," she said.

319 My French sucks but I was watching some of the reports from Paris. I would say the people largely view Macron and his party as a tyranny of a majority. There is a desire, and indeed a will, as shown by the tax, to steamroll people who don't agree with them. This is where that behavior ends- in mass protest. The Blue States here should pay attention. So should places like the UK if they go against the people on Brexit.

By the way, it also seems a lot of North Africans are corrupting the real meaning of the protests and simply rioting. I can't tell how widespread that is. But this entire thing is creeping into anarchy.

There's a lovely story, which was related during Ken Burns' Civil War documentary, probably by Shelby Foote, about the ladies and dandies from northern Virginia coming out to see the first battle at Mananas. With their blankets and pickanick baskets, wine and cheeses, they watched from a hill...

Until the battle took a turn, and started coming their way.

Scattered baskets and wine and ladies in corsets... I think if I had to choose one single moment to go back in time to, once I get the keys to Ace's time machine, that's where and when I would go.

Sideline non-answer - the hiviz reflective vest is part of the required kit for a registered car in France, probably along with jumper cables and road flares and stuff like that. So wearing one just means "I have a car; I am a driver". It's not strictly a truck driver thing.

People milling about, like nothing ever happened there.

In the interwar period, DeGaulle was one of the pioneering theorists on armored doctrine, on par with JFC Fuller, and Guderian.

Of course, virtually none of his innovative thought on the armored spearhead in war was used by the Frogs at the beginning of WWII. I have a sneaking suspicion that a big part of that was that the Frog high command was annoyed by his arrogance and ignored his theories. Oops.

Funnelator is good for tossing tear gas cannisters and bricks back. Also good for soda cans filled with sand.

511 On a related note, I've always thought it would be kind of neat if there was some sort of fantasy movie in which they call up from the past the greatest warrior to have ever lived, and instead of Ghengis Khan or Alexander the Great the result is some guy wielding a flint-tipped spear and a club whom no one has ever heard of - it turns out he did more with less resources than anyone else, but since he lived in the neolithic era his name was forgotten thousands of years before writing was invented.

512 Given the endless capacity of the human race for solving problems through violence, I dare say that most places that have been inhabited for millennia have been the site of some battle or another. It just that we don't remember it anymore....

Likewise, there are memorials to be found, for war heroes who were given medals for their actions.

It must be noted, for nearly every person rightfully honored, up to and including Medal of Honor winners, there are probably several, perhaps dozens, whose honorable actions are not remembered, because there was no one around to witness it, to write it up afterwards.

And those men lay buried where they died, unremembered.

Which is another reason why it rankles me so, that Memorial Day and Veterans Day get jumbled up, and the distinction is lost.

Those who came home have their day. Those who did not, have theirs, and it is MUCH more sacred, because we don't know. We'll never know, and they deserve that we stop and honor them. Just them.

Good point. OTOH, there was so much armor theory floating around at that time, it was hard to tell who was right or wrong. Liddell-Hart, for example, proposed divisions entirely composed os tankettes and light tanks.

522 "vive le lafayette. that shit is over."

It never really began. The French only aided our revolution to bring America under their sphere of influence. They wanted to be our new Master, not our friend.

I'm sure you already knew that. I'm just venting for those who somehow were never exposed to the idea.

As a child I was Baron von Steuben in a school play. I remember the Prussian was first introduced to Ben Franklin by the French. I was young and patriotic and grateful to France. Ah to be so idealistic again.

Now, as a former Marine, when I think of France it's all about their cowardice and betrayals. To hell with them.

524 Hey, you want to hate the frogs and forget about Lafayette? Your choice of course. I won't, and I know the French have been fighting side by side with us to this day, some dying with us.

And I'm talking about the French people. Not the government.

And yeah, I have three family members planted in Europe from WW II. So screw de Gaulle. But he's not the French people.

526 "The cucks have been running their mouths about small government since the 50s and achieved zilch. It's almost as if they never really believed any of that."

Fen's Law. The Left doesn't really believe in the things they lecture the rest of us about. Sadly, when I first coined it back during the Clinton impeachment, I was naive enough to believe Conservatives were more principled.

Professor Jacobson over at Legal Insurrection is just the latest example. He gets deplatformed by Amazon without even the courtesy of an explanation. His follow up queries to face his accusers are rudely ignored. And what does he do? He turns around and bans criticism without explanation or due process. While pretending to take the principled high road that refuses to stray outside the Rule of Law. Hypocrite. Really no different than the nazi censors at Twitter. Be warned.

These days I'm trying to convince myself that passivity and cowardice is a bug of Conservative philosophy and not a feature. Our mistakes tend to err on the side of caution. I cant remember the last time we overplayed played our hand. We get dealt a full house on the flop and we check. We turn a rout into an orderly retreat and consider it a victory. We crack open champagne to celebrate the rescue of Kavanaugh who never should have been captured and burned at the stake to begin with.

I'm losing faith. The passivity and hypocrisy of the Republican party and conservatives is radicalizing me. I think I'm beginning to understand how extremists rise - they get results, not 500 word essays expressing outrage that yet another Jewish family was taken by the Gestapo in the middle of the night.

In Desert Storm we placed French allies on the far left flank of our maneuver element, far away from the FEBA where any sudden and inevitable betrayal would have the least impact.

I love Layfayette, but I think France's manhood died in the trenches of WW1.

Reminds me of a movie I want to write. Grumpy old man starts underground militia cell consisting of 5 other recruits. Each of the 5 is an undercover gov agent, all unaware of each other, all tripping over each other and setting each other up. Kind of a spy vs spy vs spy. Grumpy old guy is the sole survivor.
