Captain Marvel Is Obviously Already a Disaster. Can the YouTube Shillers and NPC Media Bully America Into Seeing This Piece of Shit?

Via JohnEkdahl, who tipped me about these Nerd Crew channels trying to spin Captain Marvel as not-terrible:

chakabracaptainmarvel
Nerd Crew type dudes pretending they're totally stoked by Captain Marvel.

This. Is. Sad.

This is not the nation that destroyed the Nazi regime.

If you're not into comic books, you probably don't know who the real, popular heroes are and who the perennially-cancelled-for-low-sales losers are.

Which is fine.

But if you're that kind of person, you're exactly the person that Marvel has been trying to convince for ten years that Captain Marvel is a Real superhero.

She's not. She's not even the original Captain Marvel. In fact, the name "Captain Marvel" was ripped off from the Captain Marvel/Shazam comic books, after those books went out of print.

Second-tier Spider-Man villains like The Shocker are more important and more interesting than Captain Marvel.

Fucking Stilt-Man has more legacy and more impact on the Marvel timeline than Captain Marvel.

Marvel keeps pushing her only because they're being criticized for not being diverse enough. And actually, they are pretty diverse -- it's just that most of their best female heroes are X-Men, and Fox owns the movie rights to the X-Men, so Marvel movies don't have access to them. (Until recently.)

So Marvel has been trying to make Fetch happen for like 8 years, pushing this character which is an absolute zero. Every eighteen or twenty issues, they cancel her series for low sales, then blast out an EXCITING NUMBER ONE ISSUE!!! (Number One issues always sell artificially high, because collectors are dummies who think that the fifth Captain Marvel #1 will one day have a fraction of the value of Action Comics #1 or The Amazing Spider-Man #1.)

It's a boring character, a terrible character, a character with the blandest, most generic power set imaginable, and a character with no personality at all, except "scowls" and "is a bad-ass, no-nonsense female."

Anyway, if you're a non-comic-fan and are wondering "Should I have heard of Captain Marvel before...?" the answer is "No, you shouldn't have."

She's a D-lister. A D-Lister that Marvel has for eight years tried to make an A-lister, and merely succeeded in making either a C-lister or, well, just a D-lister again.

But in case you haven't seen this Ghostbuster-esque trailer -- it even includes her slapping a physically frail woman; I can hear "The Power of Patty compels you!" in the back of my mind -- here it is.

This movie will suck. Count on it.

And count on sixty billion articles from The Mary Sue, Jezebel, and other people who don't actually like comics or action movies telling you why she's actually the best hero in the universe, even though her books sell like shit.

Ethan Van Sciver had a funny line about Brie Larson's scowling Block of Wood face: "When she looks at me with contempt, I feel like I owe her alimony payments."

People Want to Take Disney Down: One point working against this movie, among all the others.

People are sick of Disney. They're sick of Disney's success, sure, but they also suspect that critics are giving Disney free passes for mediocre or bad movies. Whether because of a fear of a backlash from Disney fans, or because they've been buttered up with access, or whatever -- Disney movies get reviewed better than they should.

People had an itch to see Star Wars fall. The moment it showed weakness in The Last Jedi, they pounced, and turned Solo into a box office disaster.

I think everyone except the people who are still totally on the Marvel train want to see Marvel bloodied. And we know we can't hurt Avengers 4 (even though Avengers 3 was overrated, and Avengers 4 is already predictable), but we sure can hurt this piece of crap.

It's the weak member of the herd.

The only thing Captain Marvel was known for was giving Rogue (the X-men character) her powers. That's it. Other than that, no one cares.

40 Marvel Comics has to keep using the Captain Marvel name in order to maintain shared use of the copyright with DC, they worked out the deal in the 70s I think it was.

When they killed off Mar-Vell, the original Captain Marvel in Marvel comics, he's only distinctive for being dead still. Seriously, he is literally the only character I can think of that died and has not come back. They even brought back freaking Bucky Barnes for crying out loud.

There was one interesting Captain Marvel, this Cajun chick with light powers in the 80s that was really cool. The latest incarnation is a super butch dyke fascist.

The movie looks... meh. It might not suck but nobody is getting a good vibe off it. That stinger in Avengers 3 really didn't fill anyone with interest because the symbol is so obscure even my brother didn't know what it was and he had crates and crates of comic books.

She had these blackout episodes and her powers would kick in then, going to fight crime, then would go back and wake up again as just a girl. It was an interesting twist. Basically the same power set. At least it would be different.

91 Rogue is a bad ass and if when Marvel get her movie rights back they should do some Rogue movies.

But not cute lil' ingenue Kitty Pryde substitute Rogue, the real one.

Last I heard, Captain Marvel was a Muslim woman in the comics continuity.

Nah, that's Ms Marvel, its a bit confusing. Especially since the original Ms Marvel morphed into Captain Marvel.

95 Lets see. For a while the comic book super hero movies were popular. Because they were not infested with SJW crapola so they were still an escape after regular movies had become yuck to normals who don't enjoy being always cast as stupid, greedy, etc.

But of course the SJ madness has now infested comic super hero movies too. The film noir buffs are no doubt all gleeful but technology will probably soon allow the studios to modify those classics so you better get copies of what you really love now and buy an extra player for whatever media it is on.

122 I was just flipping through the channels, and they had a documentary on some English battle involving Vikings. The truly amazing thing was that the hostess was.....Megan Fox. There was a woman pulling bones and skulls out of a box, where they'd been placed after excavation, and gassing on about the battle, and how fascinating the whole thing was. Fox just stood there looking alternately bored and confused, then, for variety, simultaneously bored and confused. IOW, pretty much every role she's ever played. It was quite amusing.
For some reason, that came to mind after watching the trailer.

Captain Muvla has no natural market. Girls only go to these movies with their bfs. The Bfs aren't going to want to see it. It appeals to no one at all except completionists.

173 Hey Marvel! Why not make a movie about an Original Character I came up with? 197 Gal Gadot is truly stunning and seems like a good person, but she doesn't really stand out as an actress yet. I mean she's just getting started in the work so who knows what she can become

But.. and this might get bottles and rocks thrown at me... there aren't very many really great actresses in history in my opinion. Many pretty good actresses, and some super hyped ones that aren't that great, but few truly great ones. But you can list many great male actors.

Now part of that might be roles, that women are given few chances to really get a good part but... give Anthony Hopkins a small or dull part and he still shines, he's still brilliant.

199 They've been trying to make this character successful since the 70's. She sucked then and will always suck. Captain Marvel, the Kree Warrior, was great, but his sales were never as good as the core titles - The Amazing Spider-Man et al. I know, because I collected the books as child - I stopped when prices went up from .35 cents a book. When I started you could by a book for .12 cents, like the first issue of Captain Marvel. Mar-Vell went from the first Space Born Superhero to the Most Cosmic Hero of Them All, @ .20 cents an issue.

I did, however, pick up an original printing of the first graphic novel, The Death of Captain Marvel by Jim Starlin while in college. I still have it. Mar-Vell was one of my favorite heroes and he died.

Carol Danvers was an early attempt at Social Justice - Marvel wanted more women heroes. The problem then was the primary consumer - boys - had no use for women heroes. I cannot speak today with all the adult aged collectors. Of note, all the social justice characters were derivative.

Uhh.. I get the impression Ace still follows comics.. but I may be wrong..

Don't get me wrong, enjoying comics is OK as a remembrance of youth for a few minutes, but today's marketing for them is trying to drag everyone into the theaters to see hollow characters who are SJWs as if they're the greatest thing since sliced bread.
Ace doesn't come across like Comic Book Guy to me.
And *full disclosure* I saw the original Superman movies with the late Christopher Reeve. They were pretty good precisely because they were pretty true to the comic books I read as a real live Boy. And no SJW-ismness.

265 Carol Danvers had some pretty good phases in her history at Marvel.
Nearly all of them were written by Chris Claremont, the guy who also gave us most of the interesting X-Men women. He turned Jean Grey into Phoenix, created Kitty Pryde, Rogue, Psylocke, Danielle Moonstar, Rahne Sinclair, Siryn, Xi'an Coy Manh, Mystique, Destiny, Emma Frost, Rachel Summers. He didn't create Storm, but he defined her.

Carol Danvers was a nobody character who got crapped on big-time until Claremont took her, un-fucked her, and made her into a major badass. And then Marvel took her back and lost all the good stuff Claremont did.

It looks like Marvel took just a little of Claremont's stuff and a whole lot of the crap for the movie.

Which is irrelevant.

But they are huge. Even by superhero standards.

Parenthetically, I think average comic book boob size maxed out in maybe the mid nineties. I should do a study....

363 I have not seen many comic book art lately, but I read from the late 80's to early 90's.

What struck me is that when I started reading (ironically Iron Man- my Dad recommended the title as one he read in high school) the art was very hyperidealized. It always reminded me of greek statuary. All the dudes (even Tony Stark) were ripped with a lot of definition and devolpment, all the women had huge racks. Oddly enough, this was very appealing to 15 year old me.

Toward the maybe early to mid 90's, when I stopped reading them, one of the reasons I stopped (the other was college) was that the art was no longer attractive. They seemed to be going more and more for abstract looks to the drawing. The story lines also started to get a bit more muddled, but the art was one thing that really turned me off.

Fun Fact: writing the words "Come and Take it" on a steaknife is crime in the UK as it would make it fall under the highly illegal "Zombie Knife" category. When not just this but all of your natural rights are corroded to that point, your country's as good as dead.

382 I've got to stand up for Carole.

Yeah, her background screams '70s, but a female powerhouse was a welcome addition to the Marvel Universe.

I never read any of the initial Ms. Marvel series. I understand it was lousy until Claremont came aboard. However, her induction into the Avengers offered a lot of promise -- which the creative team squandered with the pregnancy, leading to the infuriating Avengers #200.

When she was brought back on the team in the '90s, I was ecstatic. And her new moniker, Warbird, fit her history and powers perfectly. But subsequent Avengers writers didn't want her. In Carole, I see a lot of lost potential.

I gave her a chance as the latest Captain Marvel, but the stories were full, and I dropped the book. Then came SJW Marvel, driving me out of the MU.

I don't have high hopes for her movie, but I may see it.

Now for those of you ex-Marvelites who can't think of any Marvel superheroines outside the X-Men: Seriously?

Invisible Woman
Wasp
Spider-Woman
Hellcat
Firestar
Moondragon
She-Hulk
Valkyrie
Dazzler
Crystal
Medusa
Sersei
Clea
Katie Power and her sister (never read that title)

Some may argue that some of these don't qualify as heroes because of their circumstances, and I'll admit that.

Still, my point remains: There are superheroines in the MU. You just have to look around.

397 "But if you're that kind of person, you're exactly the person that Marvel has been trying to convince for ten years that Captain Marvel is a Real superhero." "Marvel keeps pushing her only because they're being criticized for not being diverse enough." Wong, mostly. Can't end Infinity Gauntlet without Silver Surfer, and Marvel Studios can't use him because lawyers. The most similar superhero they can use is Marvel, so that's it. I don't expect it to be great, but I don't expect it to be SJW super pandering like Female Ghostbusters, either. Ace is mad nobody wants to make a movie about Grafamaximo, his journal of his cognitive and spiritual journey to find the truth of art.

Posted by: hurricane567 at December 05, 2018 01:38 AM (/6I3E)

398 My bet is that the movie will be Iron Man 1 quality without RDJ's charisma. So a serviceable movie better than anything put out by DC except possibly WW(although really that movie wasn't great except for the fact that they nailed the portrayal of WW herself) but still subpar compared to many of Marvel's other offerings. Had she been powered down a bit and integrated from the start it could have led to some interesting interactions in Civil War and added another angle to the thing.

Also, the old woman is a skrull shapeshifter and thus could bench press that train car with everyone in it(assuming comics continuity). Given the purpose of skrull infiltrators a frail old lady is exactly the type of form they would take when roaming the city because nobody considers them a threat.

You act like Guardians of the Galaxy and Doc Strange were A listers. Or that Iron Man was as popular then as he is now.

The only reason the MCU is the way it is is because Marvel lost the rights to their REAL A listers - Xmen, Spidey.

403 If they're looking for a good female super hero that's not in the X-Men and has a least some general populace name recognition they shoulda gone with She Hulk. Yeah, I know in the comics she's typically been a bit more of a humor mag, but that's actually a plus in my opnion.
