Macron Suspends Gas Tax Hikes for Six Months and Suspends Electricity and Oil Tax Hikes Through the Winter, but the YellowJackets are Not Appeased

They're just hoping this is enough to quiet people down, so they can hike the taxes without protest in the spring.

Fuel tax rises which have led to weeks of violent protests in France have now been postponed for six months.

The move was announced in a televised address by PM Edouard Philippe, who said anyone would have "to be deaf or blind" not to hear or see the anger.

From LeFigaro.fr:

"No tax is worth endangering the unity of the nation."

Almost three weeks after the first day of national mobilization of the "Yellow Jackets," and three days after the serious violence in Paris and the country, the Premier Minister announced the new measures Tuesday, via television, in an "attempt to mollify" and to return to "social peace." "If the events of the last days have shown us anything, it is that the French do not want increases in tariffs or new taxes," stated the head of government, hoping to "(hold to) the ambition" of the pivot to environmentalism...

To reduce the anger of the "Yellow Jackets," the Prime Minister had also issued a mea culpa in the name of the [ruling] majority. "The French who put on a yellow jacket lover their country. They want taxes lowered and their work to pay. This is also what we want. It is the heart of the mission of the president of the Republic. If I have not adequately expressed it, if the majority had had trouble convincing the French, then let me say, we must do change something," Edouard Phillpe said.

But many of the Yellow Jackets are unconvinced.

After the annoucement of Edouard Phillipe, the "spokesmen" of the movement didn't hide their dissatisfaction. "This [suspension of the tax] plays the French for fools and puts the tax in place in six months," said Benjamin Cauchy, member of the group "Free Yellow Jackets." This moratorium on the raising of the tax on gas, announced this morning, has already been criticized by several politicians, who judge it insufficient. "This is obviously does not meet our expectations or concerns," said Marine Le Pen.

Another protester was encouraged for the moment, but promised further demonstrations if the government attempts to re-levy the tax. Protesters lifted their blockage of the petroleum depot at Brest (they've been blocking such installations to starve the country of gas, judging the moratorium "satisfactory, but added, "We're going away" but said the government must "know well that if we don't get what we want, we're coming back. They know what we're capable of."

More: I missed this -- some protesters declare they're coming to Paris again this weekend, to continue to the protests.

There will be an Act IV. [The paper has taken to calling the last three weeks of protests Acts 1-3.] Already some "Yellow Jackets" announced that they will come to Paris. Some will even come to protest for the first time. The measures announced by Edouard Phillipe do not meet their demands.

...

At Lorient as well, Andre Bourlard, another figure in the movement, spoke of a "half-time" being called. "These [temporary suspensions in the taxes] are not enough," he said.

By the way, Macron visited Serbia for some reason. A member of the Serbian parliament also donned a yellow jacket himself to protest gas prices.

"We want normal prices for gas, or you will have Yellow Jackets in the streets of Belgrade and of Serbia," predicted Bosko Obradovic, head of the rightwing nationalist [party] Dveri.

He wanted to know why Macron had negotiated with the Yellow Jackets over the gas tax, even though they'd "set fire to half of Paris," but the Serbian president refused to negotiate with Serbs asking peaceably for a cancellation of the tax.

Note: It's really "Yellow Vest" but I can't seem to stop writing "Yellow Jacket."

168 To be fair, because of their North African adventures France considered Algerians and Tunisians, most of whom were very westernized and unradical, to be relocated Frenchies. That worked ok through the 90s but not so well in the new millennium.

218 I suppose I should put NYC on my bucket list, I've managed 55-plus years without it.

As for the frogs, when I heard they were protesting fuel taxes and the state's saturation-bombing of lower speed limits and photo radar, I was checking airfares to go join them. I recently got photo-radar-bombed twice in exurban Paris (no, not the banlieues, the nice parts) on roads that should have been 90kph, and the charges are just starting to show up on the rentacar credit card.

I'm ambivalent about bulldozing the Autoroute toll booths. It costs real money to drive a couple hundred miles, but it does fund some really nice roadside stops, and it keeps the traffic down.

As a Californian I'd rather bulldoze the Brown Streak.

241 France is so lucky to have Macron. Stupid Trump just doesn't understand trade.

America needs to move all its heartland industries to China so everything can be made by slave-like Chinese workers living in dorms and paid in ramen noodles and where no one worries about pollution.

Then Americans borrow money from China to buy the Chinese goods and with the money Americans save purchasing everything from China, they can pay all of the costs of housing, food stamps, healthcare, and so on for Americans until they die of opioids and are replaced by hundreds of millions of new, better, cheaper Third World Americans who are not Nazis.

And because Americans borrow the money in dollars, it's all a big joke on China! Get it?

Of course there will still be plenty for Americans to do in farming, because we can't move farmland to China, silly! And anyway burger-flipping robots are probably years away from widespread deployment.

Trump is as stupid as the Tsar and just as evil. And believe me, next time Anastasia Trump won't escape!

That was the typical Frog thing called "let's get someone ELSE to defend us while we sit back and avoid any responsibility". de Gaulle pulled that number with NATO from the very beginning, eventually withdrawing from the military side of NATO in '66 and kicking all NATO troops out of France.

Macron is talking about getting the rest of the Eurotrash to build an army to defend France. Oh, and maybe we'll let you defend yourselves while you're at it, monsieur.

What's weird is the pairing of expecting the media to enact change (not on yourself) and so implying that being a poll manager *will* enact change (again, not on yourself.)

I hope that someone asks the lady for specifics.

Your post suggested a cycle of doom. By "metacuck" and "you are your own," I'm suggesting that there probably aren't external drivers to your cycle, or that if there are, they are significantly secondary to the prime mover in your situation. In a metaphysical sense, *you are* the cycle.

You noted some time back that you didn't have faith, but then spoke about God as if he was responsible for X (I'm paraphrasing). I said you had more faith than you probably knew...and what I meant by that was that to perceive an act, you have to allow for the existence of an actor. I don't believe in a god or gods, so the idea that something I don't "believe in" (for lack of a better term) could be responsible for something I do perceive seems like a logical non-equation. This is a similar situation.

You're probably thinking about this too quickly, but if you slow down, mull it over, you'll see that (to use annoying but situationally useful psychobabble) youi're externalizing yourself. Look way way down inside. That's where the ruin is.

Unsolicited advice being worth what you paid for it, there's mine.

abject failure of their government and society or is it just being
pissed at things getting more expensive?

I believe the average French person knows the higher prices are the result of government ineptitude. But he does not know to blame globalism or immigration. So the protesters will demand and get more of the same socialist policies, and continue to attack rich people and Jews when they riot; and they will not elect Marine LePen and her party, who could actually solve France's problems.
I hope I'm wrong. Because if I'm right, this is not stopping until one of several kinds of disaster takes place. Remember the result of the same kind of delusional thinking 95 years ago in Munich. If I were anywhere in Europe I'd be leaving.

After the Bourbon Restoration, since the trial participant of Louis

and was instructed to leave his homeland to in Brussels where David also completed many works,
last but not least died in a very strange land. As modern humanity exposes their tanned skin during vacations they like to

398 Suspend for six months is boiling the frog slowly. The French government can just slowly increase all taxes by pennies until they have the amount they greed for. In six months the tax will be where it was supposed to be and then when implemented again will be suspended and on and on.If the yellow vest don't stop it dead now, it will never stop.
