Glenn Reynolds: I Deleted My Twitter Account Because It Was Making My Life Worse

And exposing me to the worse that other people had to offer, I think he means.

I deactivated my Twitter account about a week ago. I was partly acting on impulse, because the social media site had just, for no obvious reason, "permanently banned" someone I follow, something that seems to be happening more and more. But I was also acting on my growing belief that Twitter is, well, horrible.

All social media have their issues. The "walled garden" character they create is the antithesis of the traditional Internet philosophy of openness. They are actually consciously designed to be addictive to their users — one company that consults on such issues is actually called Dopamine Labs -- and they tend to soak up a huge amount of time in largely profitless strivings for likes and shares. They promote bad feelings and bad behavior: I saw a cartoon listing social media by deadly sins, with Facebook promoting envy, Instagram promoting pride, Twitter promoting wrath, Tinder promoting lust and so on. It seemed about right.

[I]f you set out to design a platform that would poison America’s discourse and its politics, you'd be hard pressed to come up with something more destructive than Twitter. Twitter has the flaws of the old Usenet newsgroups, but on a much bigger scale.

Even the "blogosphere" of the early 21st century, in which independently run blogsites posted items on news, and responded both to Big Media stories and to each other, was more like traditional media in some respects than like Usenet or social media....

A story that spread like wildfire through the blogosphere still did so over the better part of a day, not over minutes, and it was typically pretty easy to find the original item and get context, something the culture of blogging encouraged.

...

Twitter is more like Usenet than blogs, but in many ways it's worse... The "retweet," "comment" and "like" buttons are immediate. A retweet sends a posting, no matter how angry or misinformed, to all the retweeter’s followers, who can then do the same to their followers, and so on, in a runaway chain reaction.

Unlike blogs, little to no thought is required (the character limit discourages it), and in practice very few people even follow the link (if there is one) to "read the whole thing."

Reynolds notes that "journalists" and "pundits" are among the heaviest users (and therefore abusers) of Twitter, probably enjoying how very little work they have to do to "keep their visibility up."

But laziness teaches further laziness, and people get addicted to the fire-and-forget style of twitter, where you don't have to actually read an article and certainly not the original documents it may have been based on.

Just add your own one-second-of-thought tag to the tweet and launch it out into the world and sit back and wait for your like-minded partisans to cheer you for your Outstanding Twittering.

And of course none of those people will bother to read past the twitter headline either. But at least they'll have an excuse -- Jonah Goldberg tweeted this out!!!

He must have read this before retweeting it, right?

Or... wrong.

Twitter is like a game of Information Dominoes, where the dominoes have already been laid out for you on the gym floor, and all you have to do is tap one on the top to send dozens of lines of dominoes tipping over.

And yet no one along this path of viral transmission of information seems to give any thought to the consideration, "Maybe I ought to ascertain this viral claim is true before coughing it out all over the world's face."

The only way to stop this pandemic of falsehood is to correct and retract, and the only way to find out if you need to correct and retract (assuming you don't do the work yourself, which, let's face it, our lazy "Information Elites" never do), is to actually read the evidence presented by someone who did do the work.

But a lot of these people, like Jonah Goldberg, don't have the time to just read the digest of someone else's work either, and are quite happy to leave a completely-false tweet out there, infecting more people with a lie.

Tim Pool makes a good point about the media's -- and media allies like Jonah Goldberg's -- practice of SCREAMING OUT fake news and then whispering the correction.

He makes a very insightful point: This creates two different realities, one believed by those who saw the Fake News, and who think that's real, and another reality by those who saw the Fake News and also the retraction or debunking, and who thus know the original claim was false.

The media creates divisions and hatreds in our societies -- almost deliberately, though I think a lot of it is just due to partisan pique and a complete unwillingness to admit error -- by not giving their corrections and retractions the same SCREAMING promotion they gave to the Fake News.

Now, when people talk about the NPR story, there'll be people who only read the headline -- the headline Jonah Goldberg retweeted out to his 100,000+ "followers" -- and they will think those saying that news item is false are crazy or lying.

It's not good for society when two camps have contradictory beliefs about the basic facts they build their worldviews on -- and those who do this deliberately, or who are churlish and grudging about correcting LIES they pumped out to the world (albeit unwillingly) are adding to the strife and division they write one column every two weeks decrying.

It would be good if we could all agree on the facts, wouldn't it?

But for that to happen, those who promote fake news have to be a lot more honorable and candid about also promoting the correction.

And it would also be nice if those who swear to be Congnitive Light-Workers would actually prove this by reading articles and original documents from time to time, instead of just hitting the "Retweet" button with the mechanical fury of a misfiring industrial robot.

Oh well, I'm sure Jonah Goldberg has learned his lesson and apologized for the dismissive sneer he gave to someone trying, correctly, to correct the falsehoods he was spreading.

I'm just sure.

You're very, very, wrong here. Most of the modern social platforms have entire teams of people deliberately structuring every last detail of their platform to alter users' behavior in ways that benefit the platform to the detrement of the user and public stated social purpose of the platform.
We're talking really cynical, evil shit that would get your psych license yanked if you pulled it in a squishy social sciences stufy.

24 The conundrum is, conservatives leaving Twitter and Social Media is exactly the outcome the Left wants.

I don't really know how to both punish these companies yet not also unilaterally disarm.

It would be like Republicans boycotting networks and never running campaign ads. You'd get destroyed in the election and yet the network would be fine.

Posted by: Blago at December 03, 2018 06:49 PM (UfkIY)

25 You could definitely make a "both sides do it" argument in terms of political "facts," except:

1) Fox News has Cavuto, Shep, and Williams faithfully parroting the liberal line. By contrast, any other channel exclusively features NeverTrump as the true face of conservatism.

2) Facebook specifically and Big Tech in general happily ignore antifa and Islamic threats, while suppressing even milquetoast conservatives. It's buying up the "public" space then pushing half the American public out.

Which works as a colonialist strategy, until the natives realize what's happening and eliminate the invaders.

28 Whats wrong with gab?

The bigger Internet fish (Facebook, Google, Apple, et. al.) will shut down Gab, or any other alternative platform if they become too much of a threat.

They have a simple approach - all small social media outlets have to follow the same censorship policies as big social media outlets.

For example, if the Proud Boys are banned by Twitter, and Gab fails to do so, then Gab is deemed guilty of "hate speech". Gab does this enough, and they get blocked from any access or mention from the big social media and Internet platforms.

This is not only incredibly unhealthy for any political discourse, but it has to have neurological effects on people. I think there's a real danger that people are getting too comfortable thinking in 140-character "pithy" comebacks instead of thinking through issues.

The sneering, the preening, the whole "I don't have to own up to anything" attitude - it's the opposite of what was going on back then.

Conservatism used to be about TRUTH. The Truth was on their side - "the facts of life are conservative," as Thatcher said.

Now look at them. They spread lies for NPR - the thing that they want abolished! - and then shrug when called on it.

Ace, do us all a favor and just ignore these punks. Even insulting traffic strokes their ego. Spend a week without a single twitter reference.

I disagree for one big reason.

There is a large part of the Human Populace, who will follow the herd. They will speak about what is popular, and NOT speak about things which are not.

There is a silent majority out there, and Twitter is part of the mechanism now being used to decide what is popular, and OK to speak about, and what is not.

And they are doing it by promoting some messages, while not showing others. By giving some a megaphone, and by not allowing others to speak.

same with Facebook. Same with search engines.

83 The problem is most national media is from similar economic/social backgrounds, and attended a small subset of universities. That was not the case before the 1950s when most national media came from a more diverse background educationally, economically and socially.

Of course there are more women and ethnic/racial groups, but that is a superficial diversity. They are much less diverse once you get past the cleavage and skin color.

Just ignore it. Deny its inmates the dopamine rush of a negative comments, because even hate can be a source of energy and pride.

Let them howl to an empty room. Imagine the day when Max Boot, Jonah Goldberg and company do a vicious tweet and no one comments.

These people are beyond convincing and revel in the hate people send at them, so deny them this. An insult is actually a compliment, because what they really want is attention.

Nothing that poses any grave danger to society. No.

It's more about the content than how long the article/quip is. In fact, one is given much more ammunition and leeway to deceive with long articles, it can easily be argued.

The fact is that every single thing can be used for good or evil, productivity or destruction. It is not the thing, itself, that is good or bad.

Nonetheless, increasing suppression of conservative thought would have worked in 2016, if it could work at all. Under a successful President and an increasingly lawless judiciary, suppression will only inflame the people.

Their livelihood is dependent on doing what they are told, which is spreading anti-Trump propaganda.

He is making the argument that his tweets don't matter much, and getting one wrong is like, no biggie, and won't effect his status as important thought leader person.

Only...getting it right is a reason you are such a person, and getting it wrong affects that status. hell, tweeting your thoughts makes you look less thoughtful and trivial, re-tweeting makes you look even less thoughtful and important, and retweeting wrong shit makes you look like a pompous asshole and fool.

So which is it champ? If being wrong doesn't matter, then by extension, your opinion doesn't matter. Ergo, you have no standing to recover.

238 I think Ace fixates on Goldberg because he's a Gen Xer and brought an edgier tone of conservatism, plus Star Wars and Simpsons references.

And that was cool.

But it's now clear that he was either pretending or simply sold out. Either way, the result is the same: Jonah Goldberg doesn't care if you hate him, he just wants your eyeballs for his traffic stats.

This is why Ace also hammers Allahpundit. He's convinced despite all evidence to the contrary that these mercenaries have a sense of shame.

243 >>>there'll be people who only read the headline -- the headline Jonah Goldberg retweeted out to his 100,000+ "followers"

How many people actually still pay attention to these assholes? Numbers like this may be misleading. I think the only explanation for the cuck phenomenon is that 1) they get MSM gigs on tv, 2) they get writing gigs, 3) they are funded by lefties.

They might appeal to 0% of conservatives, but they comfort leftist by making them think "even conservatives realize they are evil! If they are honest with themselves" like the earlier post today about Hayes.

251 I found the 1946? comedy with "Baby its cold outside" and they have both the man telling his date she should stay because its cold and a gal telling guy to stay its cold outside. So flipping the roles is not a new thing. And the original song is just a bit of fun. I think the feminazi neo-puritans hate it because they know they match the "my maiden aunt's mind is just vicious" line. Its a winter, not Christmas, song but if the triggly puff harpies hate it, it makes me like it more.

I think you're way out of your lane here. I'm not saying they're some sort of omnipotent manipulators; the comparison to prohibited actions in psych studies was to highlight the severity of their unethical conduct.
This has very little to do with the actual content itself (and it's persuasiveness or lack thereof), and more to do with manipulation of who sees what content/users.

There are also serious problems with privacy controls, with third parties that are allowed unlimited and unsupervised access to user data, and with abuse of app permissions on mobile devices resulting intrusions into non-platform related violations of user privacy.
That last part is particularly important - Obama era .gov agencies used some of that data to target people for harassment.
