After reading an article in National Geographic about crafting wooden nests for bluebirds to save them from declines, he got to work building nest boxes on his ranch in Idaho. Four decades later, at the age of 96, Larson is monitoring almost 350 nest boxes on six different bluebird trails across Southwest Idaho. "I got carried away," Larson told Audubon. "I settled on a simple design that [was] easy to build and easy to monitor. I kept adding more boxes on these trails, and these birds responded." This year he's banded over 900 birds.

It will probably cost more, but you can get high speed internet over the 'landline'. Legislation is being written or has been written to allow the 'phone company to abandon analog phone service.

There's a little off-shoot of the St Lawrence called the St Charles in Quebec City that they zamboni, illuminate, and put wooden stairs down to. You can skate about 1/2 a mile. Amazing.
Always used to laugh at the airport there - I'd be sad to be leaving, and the place was full of locals sad to be returning, from FL or Cuba or the DR.

Hey, let's not mock the one good thing about Obama. He was willing to use drone strikes to take out terrorist leaders, which is a good strategy, as it minimizes collateral damage. He also set the precedent for killing a scumball who was born here and hence was a "citizen". I think scum born in places like no-go zones should not be considered citizens since they were never assimilated or never brought up as if they were citizens.

I saw it at the theater as a child. It was such a spectacle. The chariot scene with the teams of horses was memorable, but also the sea battle, the crucifixion, the Valley of the Lepers.
And Charlton Heston was easy on the eyes. I'd love to see it again on the big screen.

My mom saw it in the theater. She always mentioned when the chariot race started the curtain beside the screen rolled back into super wide screen. Even the early VHS versions (IIRC) did that. That is good showmanship. Try that today.

As to the moral issue, it's all bullshit. Vegans have no problem with animals being killed by other animals. Therefore animals are not morally significant in the same way that humans are. They only seem to care about animal deaths when humans are responsible for them, as in livestock.
But this is obviously ridiculous. I offer the analogy, what if someone were concerned about murder when committed against red haired men, but didn't care about murder committed against brown haired men. You might conclude that such a person was faking it when they claimed to care about murder at all. You might think that they just hated brown haired men and had no serious ethical stance. That's how I feel about vegans. This is just a stupid, self contradictory expression of hatred against humans, not an expression of a love of animals.

They're advertising, but no one's quite sure which areas are getting coverage right now. Don't get me wrong. Verizon is expanding its 5G coverage as quickly as it can. But I did some checking back when the service was rolled out. But back in October (when it was rolled out) after entering a bunch of addresses into the website form that would tell you if you could use the service or not, no one could figure out where exactly in Los Angeles you could actually get the 5G service that Verizon was offering. In short, the fact that you live in one of the cities where Verizon is providing 5G network access doesn't actually mean that your residence can get 5G network right now. In fact, chances are that it can't even if you live in one of those cities.
Now it should again be noted that Verizon is expanding their coverage as quickly as possible. But AT and T is also planning on rolling out their coverage early next year. So I don't know how big of an advantage Verizon will have. That particularly applies since - with one exception - I believe the two companies are rolling out in different cities. So for the most part they won't be directly competing with each other at first.
The exception is that I believe both companies plan to provide coverage to Los Angeles before the end of 2019, though I think AT and T's coverage will be introduced a bit later in the year than their initial first wave of rollouts (as noted above, Verizon made LA part of their initial rollout).

He has had that same backing band for nearly 20-something years now. Although this time he had only one guitarist, who I assume is Charlie Sexton, although my eyesight is not good enough to say for sure.
Bass: Tony Guanier
Drums: George Receli
Various instruments: Donnie Herron
For several years he also had Stu Kimball on guitar, but he wasn't there on Monday.
This is the best live band he's ever had. They've also played on several of his recent albums including the ones featuring old standards instead of Dylan originals. Those guys can play anything.

They are insane to think that they can funnel all of 240 west down a single lane ramp, merge with the traffic coming off I-26, and bring them up a single lane ramp to a stoplight to turn right onto Patton. Going east it's even worse because you'll have 3 lanes of Patton all trying to get into 1 lane to turn left at a light to get onto I-240 Eastbound. Madness.

They are insane to think that they can funnel all of 240 west down a single lane ramp, merge with the traffic coming off I-26, and bring them up a single lane ramp to a stoplight to turn right onto Patton. Going east it's even worse because you'll have 3 lanes of Patton all trying to get into 1 lane to turn left at a light to get onto I-240 Eastbound. Madness.

I-45 widening, from South of Beltway 8 on the South side of Houston, on down through the various smaller 'burbs n' such.
What was three lanes on each side, is steadily growing to five lanes, WIDE shoulders and a center HOV lane.
Right of way is easily extending to 200 YARDS, side to side, when taking the access roads into account.

They've built over 40,000 homes South of Beltway 8, since the year 2000.
That widening is GOING to happen, damn near all the way to Galveston.
Pearland has installed a couple of Roundabouts.
They fucked 'em up, bigly.
They don't know which lane is supposed to proceed, and which is supposed to Yield.
And it changes on different sides of the circles.

I've got a friend who's a Japanese national living here in SoCal. A couple of years ago, I took her to the Reagan Presidential Library. The other day, she contacted me with some questions about getting tickets. Some friends of hers are visiting from Japan this weekend, and apparently out of all the things here in SoCal (and there are a lot), the Presidential Library is on the short list of things that they want to see during their trip.
Talk about making an impact...
Interestingly enough, a small art exhibit from the Vatican was also present at the Library when I went with my friend. One of the paintings in that exhibit was of Gracia, and my friend explained who she was.

They said they had just opened a new WWII museum in Noumea - which was a yuuuge administrative HQ and rest area for the US in WWII. One of the only true paradise South Pacific locations - few bugs, no malaria (I think).
Best friend's father flew one liaison pilot mission for the Army, at the Saipan invasion, got a concussion on the ground, after some time back at Pearl spent the rest of the war typing forms at Noumea. Pretty sweet duty.

First! i found the 80 Liter dehydrator herself said we should get on sale at Cabela's, but with a $75 extra charge tacked onto the "free shipping". but talked the "local" (~50 miles, one way) Bass Pro into honoring the deal, with free ship to store. even with #Failifornia gas prices, that's a savings, and i have a relative i actually like who lives there, so we can visit.
then, and even better, i was checking the web site of a local toy store, to get info for a family friend, when i saw they had a Springfield M-1A, barely used, on consignment, for <$1000.
we're doing the 4473 this weekend, so she'll be home by Christmas.

You might have relevant questions if 'ninjaed' was two words. But you'll note the lack of a space, indicating that it is only one. There is no Ninja Ed. There is no Ninja Erectile Disfunction (as if ninjas would ever have problems performing!). Carmel, Indiana.
The reason they have so many has to do with Republican Mayor Jim Brainard. "I was fortunate to spend a term in law school in England. I saw roundabouts being used there, and they seemed to handle so much traffic," he says. "So after I became mayor I started doing some research and convinced some of our consulting civil engineers to build a few roundabouts."
"They're so much safer," he says.
Carmel now has 102 roundabouts. That's more than any other city in the US. Full stop.

Surfperch, there are a handful of circles in San Diego. La Jolla Blvd., Bird Rock area, they added 3 of them, I think. Think it used to be stop signs all around. Not really bad - main drag is a busy commercial street and only coastal connection between La Jolla and Mission Bay area, side streets are all residential. It works.

Truthfully, I can't think of a single roundabout in the whole Bay Area (unless you count large, circular streets which don't function at all like traditional roundabouts). I seem to recall that there are a couple somewhere in the one of the bad parts of LA.

Slap, may I suggest the next time you go to the grocery store you buy a box of old-fashioned oatmeal (not quickie, instant or microwave crap) for such emergencies. It's easy to cook, fills you up and, if you find it boring, you can always add nuts or fruit or cinnamon or a splash of milk for flavor and to bulk it up even more. Most importantly, you also control the salt content. Properly packaged after opening, it has a long shelf life, too.

i got my 03... they send the first one to Bass Lake, up by Yosemite, because someone fat fingered the zip code.
and, on good authority from the local FFL holders at our favorite toy stores, i have good reason to expect a visit from either ATFE and/or DOJ, within a year, because they can. the local ATFE is in Glendale, which is "freeway close", as we say here.
hell, they could surface street it, for all of that. i figure i'll get ready, keep my shit straight, just in case, and because that's the smart thing to do, regardless.
holding a license brings obligations, just like my professional one from the state, and the one Herself has.
if they don't come, i'm out nothing. if i don't take measures, i'm fucked if they are unhappy with something.
the upside is they *do* apparently call to make arrangements, since i'm not a business with regular hours.

got my info from an impeccable source, who was talking about another customer of theirs who got an 03, and who was visited within a year. it may because the local LA office is so near, and they can hit their quotas easy that way.
the CA DOJ is a collection of fascists, who live to arrest gun owners, so i get their motivation.
whether or not i will get a visit is unknown, but i'd be a FOOL not to be ready in case they do. that's a whole lot less effort than trying to avoid a penalty or conviction. in fact, given that i had to send an info copy to the chief of the LAPD, i wouldn't be surprised to have them come sniffing around.
i *do* have a hole card, of sorts, if the state comes 'round W/O cause, but i'd rather not get into details on that, for OPSEC reasons.
bottom line, my take is that it's better to be ready for inspection, and never stand one. besides, i HATE surprises.

CA DOJ and LAPD are not players on an 03 license, notice to local police chief is just the b.s. sop to "due diligence" that makes the 03 license less alarming to dumb anti-gun observers
"Being ready" for an inspection is literally nothing more than having your records and goodies available. The "bound book", just a listing of basic info of an firearms acquired using the 03.
*Nothing acquired using the usual 4473 process, or before your 03 was issued, is subject to the inspection*
So if you have any firearms acquired using the 03, vs. the 4473/FFL-01 process, all you need is basic info on this item/transaction, and the item itself.

Remember what the ATF is looking for, when they very rarely do an 03 inspection - someone abusing the license to do business, not personal collecting. Which means they only inspect blazing dumpster fires of cheating license-holders - which is a high bar.
There are many, many, many high-volume 03 collectors with transactions dwarfing even your respectable gun-nuttery. They never get inspected. Because "improving your collection" is explicitly permitted.
And if LAPD or Sheriffs or CA DOJ are involved, we're talking a different subject entirely. No relevance to 03 licenses.

if we were still a nation of laws, i'd be a whole lot less cautious, but i have no faith in any of the institutions involved.
and, once a government entity starts rooting around on your property, especially W/O a warrant, there's no telling what they might decide they've found, or who they might decide to share with.
for instance: all non 03 items are supposed to be marked "not for sale", even though the license is not supposed to be used for regular business of buying and selling.
does that mean i have to take every single thing we own, old and new, or can i just slap a sign on the outside of the box stating that? sanity says a sign would be sufficient, but with the Feds, who knows?

Ya, comets really don't have 'atmosphere' like a planet. They collect the volatile gases that vaporize when closer to the sun. So how would one explain the presence of elemental halogens? Too reactive chemically to exist in the elemental state. Some kind of compound that breaks down when exposed to sunlight? Obviously the observers have captured spectral emissions, why can' they say what the outgassing is, instead of just saying 'green'?
How can one start the day not knowing these things?

The showers were separated by basically shower curtains. Kind of some privacy, but the curtains could move. Plus there was no where to put your clothes.
It looked like the shower area had been built high school locker room-style, then the curtains were added later as an after thought.

Yeah. Well, I'm obviously not your lawyer and can't give you legal advice, if you think you have a cause of action, I'd seek out a local employment lawyer.
That being said... of course they drug tested everyone. Think of the lawsuit involved if they singled people out based on racial stereotypes. Hypothetically, if I were the lawyer of a company that had an issue with drug usage on site, I advise drug testing everyone as well.
And again, if you are hourly and weren't paid for the 2.5 hours you had to sit around, you may possibly be due some kind of back wages... but beyond that, what damages do you have to show beyond being inconvenienced?
Legality aside, it was a dick move on your companies part to inconvenience everyone like that, and would make me, as an employee, pretty bitter at my company.

Yeah. Most employment contracts I've seen have provisions for drug and alcohol testing if the company suspects someone is under the influence at work. Many have "random" testing provisions as well.
But there is a weird legal issue here -- marijuana is one of the few drugs that can be detectable in a persons body for upwards of a month after last use. But many companies, at their own behest, and at the urging of federal government "drug free work places" have zero tolerance for drug use.
So if you smoke marijuana on a Saturday in a state where it is legal (or, even more interestingly from a legal analysis stand point, have a prescription for medical marijuana), you could fail a drug test during the work week. Even if you've never smoked marijuana before or during work.
...Then what? Do you fire the employee? Even if he didn't break any (state) laws?
Eventually this stuff will make its way through the court system, but for now it's kind of a big question mark.

I 'get' random drug testing of employees. No issue with that. But to detain all employees for drug testing purposes beyond their regular working hours? I don't think they have that right.

Right. And even tangentially related industries fall under DOT regulations. My buddies brother works at a company that makes some kind of aftermarket part for trucks (I forget the details, but they're unimportant), and even he needs to get drug tested by federal law.
Here's an interesting one, though: a family friend has a medical marijuana card and a CDL. He doesn't usually do OTR anymore, but he owns a company that has an OTR contract.
Switch up that fact pattern a bit -- say it's one of his OTR drivers who has the medical card. What happens if he fails a drug test for marijuana while back home in MA (a state that has legalized marijuana for even recreational use), with no accusation that he was driving high.

Depends on the job market and if the company is located in a jurisdiction that recognizes that a company has a right to let employees go for any reason.
The reason could be that workers compensation insurance contract requires drug-free, or even a Morals & Character Clause. I think there are a number of school systems who have dismissed teachers for their risque social media.
Employee smokes dope on the weekends and runs a forklift during the week and the employer has no way of knowing at what times the employee was intoxicated - yep, get another employee, the liability risks are far too high.

It depends what you mean by detain.
If they locked you in a room and physically barred you from leaving, then that's false imprisonment.
If it was more of a "you'll lose your job if you leave," then they're likely within their legal rights. Although, as I said, they may have to pay you for the time you sat around if you're hourly.
But I agree, I wouldn't want to work for a company that cared so little about my time that they'd make me sit around for hours after my shift ended because they suspected someone may have smoked marijuana.
But I could be wrong, employment law is nto something that I really care about typically. If you feel strongly about it, maybe consult with a local employment lawyer?
Different states also have differently protections and laws on these things, so you may have a case in your state. I don't know.

Imagine you work for a hotel. There are 100 employees and 100 guests. Some of whom may have visitors. There could also be outside contractors in the building. One of these couple hundred people fires up a joint -- perhaps. Maybe it was 'only' a cigarette in a smoking prohibited facility.
What gives the employer the right to detain their employees after working hours for the purposes of an immediate drug test? For a drug test which is just as valid a week later?

Flip it around: if they suspect drug use on the premises, what bars them from trying to discover who used drugs? Especially since they could be held civilly liable if they knew about drug use, nothing was done, and then it turns out that someone was injured because an employee was high at work?
Like I said, if you feel strongly about it, consult a lawyer in your area who specializes in these things. You may be right, it may have been against some kind of employment law in your state. I don't know.

Some states have statutes which make cohabitation a criminal offense under adultery laws. Under one state's law, cohabitation means "regularly residing with an adult of the same or opposite sex, if the parties hold themselves out as a couple, and regardless of whether the relationship confers a financial benefit on the party receiving alimony.

I think you may have missed my reference to insurance contracts being the impediment.
An Actuarial performs a Sacred and Holy Computer Simulation on the very same computer used to predict our Global Warming Crisis and discovers, like cigarette smoking, that abusing Schedule I narcotics has a measurable risk and associated cost to that risk.
That risk is then used to calculate the terms of an insurance contract with an employer that covers his employees. Lets say that the employer can only get the Super Saver rate if he only covers non smokers/junkies.
The Fe'ral Government requires certain employers to provide insurance, but smokers/junkies won't be covered by the new insurance, so the Employer must make a decision, and that decision will be easily held up in court, and that is to require, as terms of employment that the employee is neither a smoker or junkie.

For a decent number of medical conditions, it is the least dangerous drug to use, and has the least side effects.
Certain seizure-related conditions have other drugs you can use, but they have horrific side effects.
Auto immune issues, pain issues, etc. etc. can all be managed with a drug with almost no side effects (marijuana), or drugs with serious side effects.
Which would you choose? Say you have a chronic back issue, with slipped disks or something serious. Would you rather use a synthetic opiate every day like oxy contin, or smoke a vape pen occasionally when your pain flares up?

We have the same thing today on college campuses. People want to sleep ( or not sleep) together is great and wonderful. Until someone cries RAPE. Then all civil liberties get flushed down the toilet and the punishment is handed out, then the crime determined, and finally a moch hearing.

I'm not so sure. I know some companies charge premiums on their insurance if you use tobacco, but I don't know of any company that bars employment for people who smoke. I'm not sure if that would be held up in court. Maybe.
Put another way -- can a company say "we won't hire obese people because we have a super saver insurance program that doesn't cover people with a BMI above 30"?
Do you think that would hold up in court?
I don't know the answer, but I suspect it would be challenged.

...and I really can't judge -- I drink alcohol, which has as many if not more side effects as marijuana.
Plus I know too many people who swear by the medical effects of marijuana to think there's no truth to the claims.

I have heard of such companies. The law prohibits discrimination on a number of things, but not necessarily a certain BMI - unless the candidate can somehow demonstrate that the prohibited BMI is a result of a medical ailment, then the ADA laws kick in.
There are health sharing plans that require regular church attendance, no substance abuse, no to very little alcohol, a host of other behavioral criteria and either an acceptable BMI or on a measurable and achievable plan to reach a certain BMI.
Also, for the record, I am all for Employer Rights to where if an Employer wakes up one day and decides the office staff is to be nothing more than 18-24 single women with daddy issues, or for that matter nothing but H1-Bs. More power to them.

Tried marijuana, it's a nice buzz but would make me thirsty. So I would drink a beer. Decided it was easier to drink a beer...or two.
What I don't get is, the marijuana crowd seems like they want to be high all the time and it should be legal to be that way. I guess MADD has to rethink it's name.

Sure, people can be high on marijuana all the time, just like people can be drunk all the time if they so desire.
It's not a very functional way to go through life, and it'll be very difficult to get a job.
But on the flip side, god knows how many millions of people are walking around full of xanax and oxy contins all day.
...It's a complicated issue.

Current ATF Form 4473 11e prohibits the sale of firearms to anyone who uses marijuana. How many gun-grabbers in pro-marijuana states aregoing to exploit that?

Right, but if I were in-house counsel at a company, I'd be verrry wary of them trying to implement any kind of blatantly discriminatory employment policy, even if it was against a non-protected class (like obese people.)

In Texas there is the 30.06 law which permits businesses to deny concealed carry on their premises. Recently the 30.07 law was added to cover open carry.
Life Time Fitness prohibits both concealed and open carry so members are not permited by law to bring their firearms into the facility. While the company has the Right to deny a citizen their 2nd Amendment Right (go figure how private property "rights" in today's fascist world override actual constitutionally enumerated civil rights), there is the wonderful added benefit for the criminal class - go wander the parking lot looking for NRA, hunting or other 2A bumperstickers and break into those cars - most likely having firearms in them.
