Francis: Gay Priests Should Leave the Clergy Rather Than Live a Double Life Within the Church

This statement says less than it may first appear to.

He's saying gay priests who are practicing homosexuality should depart the Church. But... that's hardly a new doctrine; the Catholic Church demands that priests be celibate, whether gay or straight.

He doesn't say celibate gay priests should depart; just the ones who are already breaking church law.

He does, however, acknowledge that the secular world's view of homosexuality as "fashionable" influences how it is viewed within the Church, which I think gets a little bit at the problem.

The problem is not that there are actively sexual gay priests in the Church but that there are a lot of actively sexual gay priests in the Church. One corrupt cop in your precinct is no big deal; he'll be found out and turned out.

But if a lot of cops in your precinct are corrupt, they're going to create a Secret System for concealing corruption and protecting their corrupt members.

And that's the problem facing the Church: there's a system in place to protect abusive priests.

Media agitation for gay rights, including inside the supposedly-celibate priesthood, complicates any efforts at reform.

But the real problem is that gay priests in the Church are not demanded to be celibate, only advised to be, and unless their sex life becomes notorious, they'll be shuffled around and protected.

Men with deep-rooted homosexual tendencies should not be admitted to the Catholic clergy, and priests who are gay should be celibate or leave rather than lead a double life, Pope Francis said in a new book.

Francis made the comments in a book-length interview with Spanish priest Fernando Prado called "The Strength of Vocation," in which he discusses the challenges of being a priest or nun today.

The pope said in the book that homosexuality in the Church "is something that worries me."

...

"In our societies, it even seems homosexuality is fashionable. And this mentality, in some way, also influences the life of the church," Francis was quoted as telling his interviewer.

Francis is quoted in the book as commenting on a clergyman who had told him that having gays in Catholic religious housing "isn't so grave" because it's "only an expression of affection."

That reasoning "is in error," Francis said. "In consecrated life and priestly life, there is no room for this kind of affection."

“For this reason, the Church urges that persons with this rooted tendency not be accepted into (priestly) ministry or consecrated life,” he said.

He urged homosexuals who are already priests or nuns to be celibate and responsible to avoid creating scandal. "It is better that they leave the priesthood or the consecrated life rather than live a double life," he said. The pope has warned Italian bishops in the past to vet seminarians closely and reject those they suspect might be gay.

That, and married priests may be faced with divided loyalties between their families and their duty to the larger community and the church.

I suspect that there was also a practical matter, as a married priest has a family to support, as well as ties to the community and the local political leadership, which may divide loyalties. Much of church history has involved conflict between the Church and secular authorities regarding their respective spheres of influence.

87 Lost in all the sturm und drang over the poseur pope are stories such as the one related to me by a *relative* stranger. An AA woman who hails from my hometown, a Baptist by birth, felt the call to conversion, so she became RCC.
Her parish was predominantly minority populated. Their pastor, Father O'Callahan, advocated for the community so effectively that the mayor of the small city pulled strings at the Archdiocese to have him transferred. The people of the parish then advocated for their beloved pastor at HQ, and were unexpectedly joined by busloads of other congregants from protestant denominations with their ministers.
Of course, the protest was to no avail, Fr. O'Callahan got transferred to another parish. He resigned his place in his current order to join the Josephites, who minister to Black and indigenous American children. However, he died within a year of the transfer, some say of a broken heart.
This is why the antics of the Vatican hierarchy disgust me. The RCC I know is more comprised of Fr. O'Callahan stories than the third rate media-driven soap opera that is occurring now.

***

In the middle ages Catholic bishops wielded significant temporal authority in Europe.

To stop bishops from having children and then treating the church lands as dynastic property the Catholic church got somewhat serious about enforcing celibacy - if you don't have legals kids you can't leave them your lands!

But we don't need this solution any more...obviously. All celibacy is doing is keeping more quality men out of the priesthood.

One should note the Orthodox churches allow married priests and always have and have fewer "issues" then the Catholics do....

As a lapsed Catholic, I couldn't agree more.

A few hundred years ago, an intellectual gay man's best path in life was to become a priest. They were expected to be celibate (but we're all sinners, right?), but I think the Church always kind of accepted a large percentage of their priests were closested / mostly celibate gay men.

...because it's a hard sell for a straight, smart teenage boy thinking about his career options: You can go in to business, or law, or some kind trade, orrr... you can give a vow of celibacy and poverty and become a priest.

Like, ehh... I think I'll do something that allows me to bang chicks, thanks.

But when being gay was a huge societal issue (illegal in many places), well... being a priest made more sense.

Anecdotally (this is third hand, so I can't vouch for it), but one of my dads friends sons, was considering becoming a priest at one point. I guess they do some kind of "come hang out at the seminary and see if this is your thing" kind of thing, he went, and was shocked at what he saw there. Namely, a culture of what he saw as drinking and homosexuality.

So he decided to not become a priest.

Again, not how true it is, but his dad told a mutual friend about it, who told my dad, who told me, so I tend to believe it.

The family was super catholic, and I have to imagine they wouldn't want to make the Church look bad so no one made a big deal about it.

I have the suspicion that all manner of sexual sins were significantly less prominent historically than they are now. In modern times, we have the confluence of a culture that promotes sexual promiscuity as a good thing, free and easy access to pornography, and a population with significantly more free time than than they ever had in the past.

I'm sure that a peasant boy working the fields in Medieval Europe had the same urges that I did growing up, but he was working 12 hours of manual labor each day, whereas I had Pornhub.

I have nephews who were molested by an older boy. The molester's parent's friend network closed ranks around him and lied for him in court proceedings. They also attacked the victim's father and said HE must have been the one molesting my nephews, and the boys were making it up to protect the father.

The molester got off with nothing but a restraining order.

Since then, the molester went on to molest someone else. The prosecuting attorney was VERY interested to talk to my in-laws about their experience, especially the part about the parents friend network helping cover up the previous crimes.

What the laity should expect from the Church:

1) Priests who keep their hands to themselves.

2) A hierarchy made up of the best people for the job. That is, not some bishop's hatchet man, fixer or catamite. It's said that you don't rise in the hierarchy, you're pulled.

3) Donations of the faithful used judiciously and wisely.

4) Clear doctrine clearly put.

Speaking as an observant Catholic, I'd say we're lacking in all of these right now. It's not Catholic bashing to say so. This is an administrative problem, not a doctrinal one, so we ordinary pew-sitters should get a say.

Moira's message is clear: they can hurt you, they can harm you, and they can leave you with scars that last a lifetime, but they cannot touch your soul.
Their sins are not your sins and their shame is not your shame. And
there is a light that is always waiting to heal those who summon the

Obviously that wouldn't work. Getting homos wives won't make them normal.

The problem with homo priests is that they're in a position of social and moral authority, and have access to young boys. Allowing priests to marry would at least dilute out the homo contingent in the priesthood, and make it more difficult to bury instances of pederasty.

Just as having more conservatives in, e.g., Hollywood and the media would make it more difficult for the Reds to bury instances of their malfeasance.

3. Ultimately this is all handled locally. I imagine there are typical inefficiencies of scale as it heads up the chain but I'm not aware of this being a major problem.
4. Catechism is clear, whether or not Catholic teachings are relayed correctly is an entirely different matter. Priests do their own thing and the American priesthood is pretty leftist.

You're kind of missing the main point that those that become priests are less likely to be hetero because of men's natural inclination to get married and have kids.

It's not so much that the homosexual priests need to get married, it's that the church needs more hetero men.

That could make recruitment easier but that doesn't explain the homosexual infiltration or address how to discover and oust the lavender mafia.

A filter may be a better approach if awkward. See if a woman can get them aroused. I see the celibacy discussion as more of a red herring, especially considering how much effort and time would be required to make such a change. We might well spend a decade doing that and then find the problem just as bad if not worse.

By the way, it's funny how this place screams for due process all the time, yet when the church is involved every second hand, or particularly incredulous accusation is all of a sudden "factual".

339 Paul in the Bible also says it is better not to marry. There are reasons mundane and theological. It doesn't cause people to turn gay though so the greater concern should probably be how the mass infiltration occurred. The Jesuits are another example of an originally meritorious organization becoming thoroughly corrupted.
Posted by: Someguy at December 04, 2018 02:31 PM (t849v)

"It is better" does not amount to a prohibition. Also Paul indicates in the pastorals that the usual case will be for ministers to be married. If you assume something to be the case that's an implicit assertion that it is permitted. Of course Catholics aren't bound by sola scriptura, so they wouldn't regard nullifying an implicit rule is a theological error. Pragmatically though, it seems reasonable married seminarians or priests could help change the culture. Gay priests might start to behave themselves more in the presence of straight families.

It's gay priests, pure and simple.
Also, the vast majority of the prey are NOT "little boys", but post-pubescent young men--many ( not all) with gay tendencies themselves. They are often confused young men who are taken advantage of by a gay scumbag with a collar--but many of them are gay.

Its really more of a policy decision. The Sola Scriptura thing has more to do with Apostolic teaching(the Protestant tradition is that extrabiblical traditions and teachings were not taught by the Apostles) and some things the Catholic Church asserts the Apostles taught but were not assembled as part of Scripture(rites, rituals, and about Mary being the big examples).

Posted by: Someguy at December 04, 2018 03:26 PM (t849v)

345 @30 He's really, really trying to wiggle his way out of this. ANY sexual activity has to be punished, severely, or else go the Orthodox way and allow marriage. There's really no in between.
-----------------

Maybe. But the real problem area is actively homosexual priests. We're not hearing all that many stories about priests having sex with women or teenage girls. The stories that we keep hearing are about priests having sex with males. And I don't think allowing married priests will provide a fix for that specific problem.

Or if it does resolve the problem, it won't be for at least a couple of decades as the current bunch of priests gets rotated through and retires.

Obviously I am biased here, but I think it is having a church that increasingly stands for nothing but progressive dogma is the problem along with the Holy Spirit. If you don't have anything that doesn't lift up Jesus and doesn't go against the culture of materialism and progressivism, what do you have? A society that increasingly embraces secularism and a political solution to everything. The woman minister in the UCof Canada doesn't believe in God nor anything in the bible She may have a full church (I don't know) and people may join for the fellowship and community, but it's not going to be on fire for Christ, if Jesus is some watered down figure. If everyone in the RCC clergy practiced celibacy would the RCC be growing by leaps and bounds in the US? I don't think so. The people need something to believe IN.

353 To build on the analogy of corrupt police, one corrupt policeman is indeed not especially a problem. But as you look the other way, the message gets out that corruption is tolerated. You get more corrupt cops. Those corrupt cops get promoted. You let this go on for 50 years, and then decide you want to do something about it. Good luck.

That's the problem that has been allowed to fester since Vatican II, but on an international scale. Increasing "liberal" attitudes towards homosexuality (and everything else for that matter.) I was speaking to a priest I know recently and told him the leaders of the Church have become the liberal "I'm OK, you're OK" liberal Protestant ministers we used to ridicule.

Even if we had a Pope 100% committed to fixing the problem (which we don't), it would still be an intractable problem.

He states what he thinks you want to hear but he acts markedly differently. Frank doesn't cotton to the homos. I like the cut of that man's jib. Maybe I misjudged him. Every action regarding priests and the homosexual agenda has been the exact opposite. We see James Martin spewing his bullshit. He encouraged the ascendancy of the Wuerls and the McCarricks. FFS he put a monseignor in charge of cleaning up the Vatican bank who was known to have coke and homo bashes ( not that it's a bad thing) and actually got stuck in an elevator with a callboy. Who is the indoor outdoor champ of sexual blackmail? Sure, Russia. But the mob is a close second. She had literally scrubbed floors for him to attend, as they had very little money. Towards the end of his life, he told me, and hinted at it to his sisters and brother. When he suffered a heart attack and stroke, we thought he'd had brain damage as he raved about torture chambers and other odd things. Turns out, the monks took the boys to the basement, and it is there where they suffered molestation and worse. No, Francis, it didn't hurt my husband. We were unable to have a normal sex life for years and it tormented him until he lay on his death bed.Monsters.

361 Dear Pope Francis:

Here's what you need to do to solve this issue.
1) Come to America.
2) Rent out a hotel in some central city - Chicago would be good (despite the weather) as there are plenty of angry Catholics who will support a solution to this issue.
3) Call every bishop to fly into Chicago and get a room. They are to bring with them any records they have about priestly behavior of this nature.
4) Interview them. Give all the records to law enforcement.
5) Defrock every one of them who knew about even one abusive priest and did not report him to law enforcement. It may be easier to just defrock them all, I don't know.
6) Release copies of the records to the public.
7) Tell the gay priests that if they are found to be non-celibate they will be defrocked. Public testimony will be invited.
Find a straight priest in each diocese and make them a bishop. Tell them to refuse to ordain homosexuals regardless of whether they are celibate or not.
9) Sell off properties to settle the lawsuits (in Boston, the successor to Cardinal Law, a monk who was also a priest, sold off the multi-acre Archbishop's residence to a college and got an apartment for that purpose).
10) Fly to Argentina/Spain/wherever else and go to 1.
